1:43 AM
Good morning!
omg, scary stuff.

8 hours later…
9:16 AM
morning @Rilakkuma, how are you?

Hi @PeteH!
just got back to Tokyo yesterday from my Islands trip
will write a ride story :) there were few
how about you?

10:11 AM
@Rilakkuma I am fine I guess.....I have toothache at the moment so have not been out on my bike. Also I have an outhouse which is falling down, so have had to contact a builder....
So could be better!
My dentist has just come back from holiday and I cannot get an appointment until a week's time. Fortunately I have been taking antibiotics so the pain has greatly subsided.
From March thru June, I rode a steady 300km/month
For July and August, in theory the best time for riding in terms of the weather, I managed just 100km/month

10:29 AM
not sure what's better - a falling house or toothache
in any case get better soon and stay safe!
by the way, putting a garlic on the painful teeth sometimes helps

alas, there is no tooth! It is a long and complicated story.....started off as a heavily-filled tooth a few years back, on which I had a root canal filling.

let's hope for best then. It could be just an acute infection which will go away as soon as it came. I am not a doctor though.

When I went and had a check up a few months back, part of the filling had come away, also an x-ray showed there was an infection in between the root canal and the bone
We agreed on a plan of work to do a small operation to clean the infection up, and to replace the dodgy filling with a crown
are you bored yet?
anyway...it's complicated. But I will see him next Monday and all will be well. And I'll have a lighter wallet.
The UK's wonderful health service does not include dentistry (well, it is possible but is poor quality), so most adults end up going to private dentists.

not bored at all, medical stuff is my favourite one (unless it is about me) :)
same in Japan - government pays 70% for the health service which does not include dentistry
so I am afraid even to think about visiting this sort of doctor
what's wrong with your house by the way?

10:51 AM
'Morning @PeteH, evening @Rilakkuma.

God morning @andy256!

A friend once told me that he was filling his broken tooth with whiskey.
If it doesn't deaden the pain, just drink it.

hey @andy256, how's it going?

Eventually, it will have an effect :-)
Well thanks.

I decided a long time ago that I was not prepared to suffer with toothache.

10:54 AM
Yeah. We all feel your pain.Looking at your riding stats - I was rather pleased with myself -

I would always go to the dentist. Any pain from the injection is less than the pain from the toothache

Drat with those line feeds ...

The problem this time iss that the guy had the cheek to go on holiday!

Yeah, they're like that. Drive a Porsche or Audi?

Not sure......but I used to drive a 911!!!! Before I became eco friendly ;)
Everything I see him for.....the cost always goes into the hundreds quite quickly

10:57 AM
Fun? I had an MGB when I was 20.
And that's pounds!

nice cars. Did you restore it?

Resprayed. BRG of course.
Eventually bent it.
Being a DH

I test drove an MGF once, but didn't like the ride. Bought an MX-5 instead which was a great little car.....in japanese racing green!!
I didn't pass my test until I was 25, I'd grown out of the boy racer stuff by then (mostly!)

How did you like the 911?

It was beautiful. A 993, the last of the air-cooled engines

11:02 AM
Milage?

But by the time I got rid of it, it was 20 years old and was very expensive to maintain
About 30000 miles when I got it, 100000 when I let it go. Had it 15 years or so.
I mean, how many cars do you have that you keep for 15 years? Says it all really

Yep.
My current project (given that I have no money) is to convert my Subaru to electric.

That sounds like a challenge. I like the idea of hybrids but they are expensive here. Electric would be impractical for me, being in the country, but you see a few in London

Yes, hybrids are more practical at present.

Do you have Smart cars over there? the really tiny 2-seaters?

11:06 AM
The problem with electric is the range.
Smart - yes.
Shorter than wide.

When I was looking to get rid of the Porker a smart car would have been ideal, except that every now and again I need to carry 3 people

Roof rack!

free hairdo!

But it reminds me of when I lived in Sydney.
had 5 people plus an english sheep dog in the 'B
with the top on.

:)

11:10 AM
The gut in the middle had the gearstick and the clutch
I had the brake and acccelerater

The things we used to do.....

:-) If the disadvantage of electric is the range, the advantage
is the simplicity ...
But getting back to cycling, how come you were riding so little?

Caught a cold in early July, then went off on a bike mechanics' course for 2 weeks
August.....dunno really, just didn't feel like it

You're still sick. Get well soon :-)
Didn't stop you posting :-)
How was the course?

I'm not working at the moment (by choice fortunately) but I felt a lot more motivated to get on my bike when I was working.
The course was hard. I was surrounded by 20-somethings who found it easier to take things in than I did

11:16 AM
Ah. I'm working, but not earning.
Yep. Happens. No, I can edit this one too :-)

Yeah, something wrong there. What do you do?

Ah. Just found that I can edit previous lines! Like this.

Yeah but only the most recent I think
oh wow...a delivery van just rocked up at the door! Happy days

Ok. catch you later ...

this video shows me struggling on a very steep mountain called Hachijo Fuji
in the clouds and in the thin air :)
I found a strategy to drive zigzags so climb was less steep... but it is hard to do when a car follows you :)

11:22 AM
@Rilakkuma what was the gradient?

did not measure it but it was harder than Hakone mountain which is 7-8, so I guess some 10%

I'm guessing 8%
Ah

@andy256 a wireless access point I picked up off eBay.

I need another of those. I'm really going now ...

probably this is biased, because I climb Hakone on a carbon bike with clip less pedals, and this time I was on a steelie with tanks
which makes things harder

11:25 AM
@andy256 catch you later

see you later!
It is easier to see the gradient on this pic - websta.me/p/798287129627506936_41928501

ouch!

...and since I started posting the pictures (I promise this is the last) this is the bike which we talked about last week - changed the whole thing to Campa from Shimano - websta.me/p/798285521111922923_41928501
only wheels are shimano now. And no cork on the left side :)
by the way cannot figure out the maker of the frame.
Bought it on the auction half-dead, have been used for triathlon long years ago. No signs of maker, only TAK letters on the bottom.

11:49 AM
That video footage.....do you know what camera was used to get that? It's just that I'm thinking of getting one. Garmin and Shimano cameras look interesting. All subject to dentist's and builder's fees

12:24 PM
PeteH, GoPro has the longest pedigree in this area.
Were I to buy one tomorrow, it'd be the GoPro Black
They're not perfect, but they're pretty nice.

12:39 PM
@alex gopro doesn't support ant+, makes it a non-starter :(
Looking for something that will suck in my speed, cadence etc. into the vid
A shame, since the vid quality of the gopro is very good, better than Garmin I think

Do that in post?
Or if you must, wait a generation or two. They're worth keeping an eye on, but let someone else find all the problems
Nobody makes a perfect camera first time

True, that's what makes me reluctant about the Shim, only just released.
Going on DCRainmaker reviews at the moment

looks interesting
first link on a quick google
or a freeer (not as pretty) one sites.google.com/site/verymadmart/cyclecam

1:01 PM
dashware looks interesting.........but not as interesting as having it all done for you!
But you may be right about waiting. As I say I have already discounter Go Pro, but nothind else sticks out as "the one to get".
I kind of think that if Shimano have entered the marker, they will ultimately come up with something good. But maybe not yet?
But also I have substantial investments in Garmin already (computer, power meter etc)

1:48 PM
@PeterH the footage was taken by iPhone held by wife in the car behind :)
I think it is worth to wait a little till go pro pushes new camera.

2:42 PM
yeah, Photokina's soon, might see something there.

2 hours later…
4:32 PM
@andy256 spent the last 2 hours trying (unsuccessfully) to configure it as a bridge with my existing access point. Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

7 hours later…
rk.
11:17 PM
Hello, I have a newbie question/request. I recently moved and had my bike (Jamis Coda Comp) shipped across country - disassembled and box packed by a bike store.

Now I am in a pickle and might need to assemble the bike myself. Is there any appropriate instructional guide/video which I can follow to make sure I do not end up making a costly mistake or something?
Also, what kind of tools will I need to have handy for the same.
