@nhinkle Thanks, makes sense
@freiheit How to approach that practically? Just from far enough, not pressurized etc? Or does angle of attack make a difference?

@Bernhard yes you want to avoid using a high-pressure approach, so a garden hose in "sprinkle" mode would be fine.
Also, +1 for cleaning your bike

I wasn't going to mention that :) I clean bikes when they're MTBs cobered in mud, and before they go to the bike shop. That's about it.

I cleaned my fixie last week, the rims actually look white again

I have a barbie-pink semi-V rim on the front of my lazy bike, and it was only after I changed the tyre recently that I realised just how bright it was (it had been in the LBS for long enough to have a decent coat of dust and grime on it).
OTOH, I used to regularly hose off my MTB when I was riding that offroad. Admittedly because otherwise the wheels wouldn't rotate after it dried.

@Mσᶎ bright pink? Sounds like the latest in anti-theft technology to me

When I rang the LBS they were like "yes, we have one. It's bright pink though". I suspect other people had chosen to wait for a different one to be ordered in...

7:10 AM
@Mσᶎ you should get another to stick on the rear

if I need a new rear wheel I will try to get a matching one

I got a hub & rim last week, just dull and boring though. Wanted to use them to practise some building

7:40 AM
@PeteH Thanks, well, I was cleaned the frame and rear gear wheels a bit, but never really properly. I already have 2Mm this year, so it look pretty dirty. I keep the chain in nice condition always :)

8:07 AM
@Bernhard if it helps, I use a product called "Muck Off" when I clean my bike. For the frame, I just spray it on, possibly give things a brush with one of those plastic brushes you'd use in the kitchen, then rinse it off.
I mostly do this in winter. But yes, the chain is different, I probably clean (with dry kitchen towel) and lube every week or two.

@PeteH Thanks, kitchen brush is a good idea, there is always an old one around probably, good to reach the nasty places. I indeed lube every two weeks, or even every week if I drove more than 200km.

@Bernhard Use a gentle sprinkle and avoid pointing the hose directly at parts that move.

@freiheit when this came up in my sidebar there was no context...it was much funnier that way :-)

6:16 PM
@freiheit ok, that should work :)
In this movie, how do you call this thing he puts in at t=0:25? youtube.com/watch?v=Sf80DnCgHRQ

@Bernhard I don't know. He's got a lot of special bike-cleaning stuff that ordinary people (and even most bike shops) don't tend to have...
@Bernhard Also, I wouldn't use a brush on the chain that way, since it could easily force dirt inside the chain and I care much more about the inside bits of the chain than the cosmetics of the outer plates.

6:47 PM
This guy needs to clean 9 bikes every day I suppose, so you want to do it quick ;)
But I don't want to spend more money on cleaning stuff than the bike itself ;)
