@SuspendedUser Yes, that's why I suspect he'll need a CX frame. First he needs to find out if the longer cranks help him in any way. I have Ahe hem My Theory, so I'm interested in the outcome.

A CX frame might bring another centimetre of ground clearance.
It's surprising how much is written about 60 mm vs 65 mm BB drop. Center of mass in corners and such. While that isn't mentioned at all when going to wider and thus higher tires. Or different tire pressure, as it were.

Last night I've re-centred my wheel again. Since I've only about 2 mm of clearance on either side of the 35 mm tire I scavanged. Only to find out that I don't get the tire seated so well in the centre that it doesn't rub. It's an old 70s cheap frame. Certainly wouldn't have expected it would limit tire width. The thing even got a cheap lock brazed on.

yep - its astonishing how much a frame flexes and a wheel can move
"not rubbing when standing still" means little when riding

It is quite good fun though. Especially after years and years of theoretical physics without as much as touching a wrench.

yep - which is the underlying reason for trying things rather than just talking them over.

Well got to mount the tire front then, more critical anyways.

Yes - they're vaguely important

I'm surprised though that there were BSOs that accept only narrow tires.

Today I've weighed my wheel, built for low costs rather than performance, FW at 1.1 kg. What surprised me was that they were still 50 g lighter than the kit wheel of an expensive hybrid bike from roughly the same time (ca 2000).
Those rims seemed to be built like tanks, several spokes lose, some overly tight and they were only a few millimetres out of true.
For all the benefits of weight saving, those rims are quite convenient.

nice work Wheel building is kinda fun if you have the time

Cheers Criggie. How are your long-dog and long-crank plans progressing?

Still an idea in the back of my head at the moment. Working this weekend :-\
