right - better braking I assume ? because otherwise there's no point

They're a poor solution. And if you have the style where the yoke is from arm to arm dangerous

main cable to one arm and yoke to main cable is better

v brakes are better still and use the same mounts

but, if you change, you may need to change levers too

some have a movable pivot to support either

and if your tires aren't too big, there are mini-vs that use cantilever cable pull

I've never even thought about trying a swap

its always been tweak the cables, align the pads, replace the pads with kool stop, and go from there

I have a bag of V brake arms and bits, will look at the installed levers and see what I have. All I know for sure is they're 2 finger ones.
