I kinda want to buy a set of rollers

@Batman aren't you supposed to be poor? Although rollers are probably cheaper than fixing a bike after you've been riding in the snow and salt.

@Batman I have no idea what that means in terms of finances though.

At university I was likely in the .1% of student because I owned a company that paid me unreasonably well for most of that time. I earned 1/5th as much after graduating and getting a "proper" job.

But I studied with people who at times ate purely because I was sharing a house with them. I subscribe to the theory that it's easier to live cheaply if you live with people who live cheaply.

@PeteH it was anchored right at the pier where huge oceanic liners come, so we could see it in all details. I've seen destroyers before, but that one is behemoth. I am sure airplanes can land on it without any trouble: there's all equipment for it, including raised nose with runway. Actually seeing such huge military equipment makes me feel uneasy. War is scary!

Isn't that because after WWII Japan was only allowed destroyers, nothing bigger, so they've just been building bigger and bigger destroyers?

I'm amused by how to-the-point "destroyer" is as a ship type. Likewise for "aircraft carrier".

I'm sure I read (quite recently) that the Japanese parliament finally approved for its armed forces to operate outside of Japan once again. But I can't think why that was

This question exposed my lack of knowledge as to the compatibility between sram and shimano. I know sram always used to be nicely compatible with shimano, but is that still the case with 11sp? And he's asking regarding mtbs, but what about road?

It kinda mafes you realise how, when you have kit of your own, your knowledge becomes obsolete. All of my "real world" problems are way back in the world of 6700 (or older).

meanwhile, replaced the old, bent wheels on the new bike with 3t accelero 40 pro wheelset today. The internet does not have enough clear reviews or opinions about it, but I'd say the value for 200 euros (on the auction) is more than enough.

they spin up way better than Campa Khamsins, look better and are somewhat wide, so ride comfort is affected positively as well.

I'd have thought these days the world would just shrug its shoulders if Japan built, say, a bunch of battleships. Well, we'd probably all bid to build them

@PeteH can't tell for sure, but seems like that. I have heard about many modern japanese warships but incidentally all of them were some sort of "destroyer"

and most japanese warships i see are coast guard ships. Not sure about their classification, but they look like middle-sized destroyers too.

@Rilakkuma possibly they're taking advantage of nobody knowing what all these different ships are for? Well, submarine and aircraft carrier excepted ;-)

One would hope that it is purpose driven, but who knows. As technology improves/changes, there should be fewer useful ship types.

I know there was a stink here because one government ordered a couple of aircraft carriers, but that the airplaves to go on the ships would not be ready until a couple of years later. Oops

That sounds like standard government contacting. The ship will need to be updated or retrofitted as soon as the planes are ready. The additional wait time will ensure the jets sit for a bit unused after they are ready. Hopefully when all is said and done, the 20 year life span of ship and planes will contain 5 years of useable overlap.

Considering how easy espionage and hacking are, I don't think drones will fully be the answer anytime soon.

@ChrisinAK could be one way to equalise military forces though, the US fields fleets of drones and suddenly Estonia controls the biggest military :)

@ChrisinAK Isn't the US doing that with their "one fighter plane to rule them all" botch? Australia has signed up for a bunch of them even though they're basically useless, to show what a great ally we are.

Last night I sat down to rebuild my wheel and reminded myself of just how little fun de-lacing a wheel is. Some of the spokes were corroded in place, all were tight and everything was dirty. So it took about an hour to get the old spokes out and the hub cleaned up. Today hopefully the build.

Any wheel I have ever "unbuilt" has involved bolt cutters.

The corrosion was at the nipples I assume? If it was at the hub, I imagine you'd not be reusing it.

@ChrisinAK yep, nipples cemented into the rim. Deep V rim too, so it was a bit of a pig to get at the back side of them. I use the old spokes (short lengths of stainless steel wire are surprisingly useful) so I try not to chop them short... especially from a 406 wheel.

And it's a Rohloff hub, so any corrosion and I'd be posting it back to Germany with a terse note.
