@JimmyHoffa I wonder sometimes if managers just work more because they are "expected" to but no one actually expects it
I read that article several years ago and found it fascinating

user55340
@enderland brave ne wife? Oh, there's an 'l' in there.

@enderland makes people feel more important. Honestly I really don't think managers actually "work" more, I think they just spend more time in the office often, and usually it's due to being booked into too many meetings, which is definitely not work..
I'm not going to be one who stands up and says meetings are complete wastes of time, they are and can be very important, but the number of meetings lots of managers participate in, I'm certain multiple hours of that time is absolutely wasted.

user55340
You forgot writing reports.

Not all meetings are created equal.

user55340
Which is one of those "hmm" things and you should read Slack.

3:03 PM
@JimmyHoffa heh. I told a previous manager, when our team was on paid OT, that I was more than willing to work the hours (because $) but that after a certain while he shouldn't expect to really get more productivity out of me
he... didn't like that

user55340
Microsoft Office was the worst thing ever for manager productivity.

I'm pretty sure a chunk of my team lead's time is also wasted in meetings, no idea which ones though
there's just so many of them there's no way they're all useful
oh boy, a chat flag in Russian
I am totally qualified to validate that

Q: How do I respond to chatroom flags for Stack Overflow на русском?

AlmoI was faced today with a bunch of flags from Stack Overflow на русском. I don't speak or read Russian. So... am I supposed to dig up Google Translate to evaluate the flag? Or wait for some users who understand the langauge to deal with the flags?

I thought that everyone just randomly clicked buttons for chat flags... is that not what we're supposed to do? :( — enderland 5 secs ago

@MichaelT SO has an official russian variant?
news to me
I saw the flag but as per usual, validated it with but a slight glance (saw russian, presumed spam)

3:15 PM
it has Japanese, Portuguese and Russian last I checked

The Help Center states that "software tools commonly used by programmers" are on topic and this question surely is "a practical, answerable problem that is unique to software development". That said I don't see how this is off-topic. — Hubert Grzeskowiak 35 secs ago

user55340
I wonder how long you get Stack Overflow στα ελληνικά and we can get @Yannis as a mod there.

I wonder how long until SE has no idea what's going on on half their network because it's all non-English SO clones
(yes I know they're looking for more multilingual CMs)

user55340
@Ixrec each lang.so site has a full time community manager for that language who speaks it (apparently) fluently.

I want SO-enUK.

user55340
3:19 PM
@ThomasOwens en-CA.SO 'eh?

@MichaelT Yes. That, too.

user55340
@ThomasOwens you spelled that wrong. Its "yea, that too 'eh."

Sorry aboot that. I was eating my maple syrup covered poutine.

Indian BBQ chicken!

Happy My-Balls-Are-Frozen-To-My-Legs Day everyone!
@JimmyHoffa You're thinking of Vodka.StackExchange. Common misconception, really.

I just want to scream at these people. They are trying to centralize processes. At the same time, they are trying to be lean. Those two things are exactly the opposite of each other - in a lean process, you want to push as many decisions to the lowest possible level as possible. Some things may need to be fixed at a higher level because of business rules.

@Ampt pants optional doesn't mean pantless is reasonable..

@JimmyHoffa Is there any option on there where you get the page you're actually looking for?
@JimmyHoffa -8 before windchill waiting for the train this morning, and apparently wearing coveralls to the workplace is frowned upon, so here I am with a blowdryer in the bathroom.

@ThomasOwens follow the effects back to causes back to motives. Nine times out of ten: Credit/Control are what people are looking for in all this stuff. "Lean" is just a tool they're trying to use towards their ends. Often times they just want to make a change because they think they'll end up higher in the deck if they can cause a shuffle and vye for better roles. Sometimes they think the process they're aiming at genuinely puts them in a better org position.
Often times the motive will just be they think they'll have less required of them so it'll be easier on them and they'll get to push more of their work off on others
Think it through objectively if you want to have any chance of playing the game with / against them. Otherwise you're not playing with all the cards.

3:30 PM
Well, my boss and my boss's boss have already decided that we're not playing their game.

TL;DR: #MAKEITRAIN #MONEY

@ThomasOwens lean from which perspective, though? it might be slightly worse for your team but better for the org overall (without knowing the context it's impossible to know which, though)

@enderland If we were to implement this, our schedule would increase by about...20%, I'd say. Of any given project.

@ThomasOwens see; this is subjective- it's perspective. What they do or don't want isn't the point. If you want to play, you'll have zero chance without really assessing the situation and coming up with a plan of attack (not saying your assessment will give indications of any chance at changing things, but without it you have no chance)

A: Structured Tag Cleanup Initiative Phase II

Snowmancontests - as of now only one question left in the tag. It is a collaborative-effort locked question that needs moderator to edit. It probably can be retagged to learning: Where can I find programming puzzles and challenges? Note that other two tags in above question are troublesome. puzzl...

^^^ Looking for help. I'd want to retag the question referred in there, but can't figure anything better than 'learning', which seems to be part of STCI (granted, all three of current tags look even worse)

3:33 PM
Can I just delete it?
I know it's high view...but it's not that useful.

And subjective analysis won't lead you to any real understanding of what they're actually trying at, it'll just bolster your beliefs of what is happening and cement your perspective.

speaking of high view, I got my first gold badge today!

@Ampt wait you've never had a gold badge before?

just validated another russian flag... this one said "Bald and hero had disappeared." according to google translate.

@enderland not on progs

@JimmyHoffa Please don't validate flags that shouldn't be validated.

@enderland Have enough votes for that..

@enderland @Ampt has been harribly remiss in actual effective SE participation. His rep is still quite sad.

@enderland that link had me really confused for a minute, it looked like you were the only one to ever earn that badge and I was pretty sure I had it too (and it looks like I do)

@JimmyHoffa Truth

3:37 PM
@JimmyHoffa yeah no kidding I have over 5k rep here and I don't even know what is getting me that rep
> 43 answers
I guess you get sympathy upvotes every once in a while and/or write good answers

rep is just the mans way of making you work, man.

and/or learn

need to go vote on a bunch of questions I guess

@ThomasOwens it seems to be actively maintained. Last edited half year ago, 34 revisions total. Combined with over 100K views, that makes me feel uncomfortable about deletion

@ThomasOwens to be sure I didn't know what the translation said beforehand but alright; I'll stop validating flags then. Honestly one of the reasons I always validate them is they lack any amount of context which makes most of them totally unknowable and by the time I go join the room to look and see what's going on, the flag is gone as it has enough respondents.

3:38 PM
for some reason I have >2k rep on SFF.SE and I barely do anything over there

(that and as I mentioned before, I err on the belief that people need to keep their rooms flag-free or suffer)

I would agree that with the flag system the way it is, it almost doesn't matter what you click on unless it's a flag for the chatroom you're currently in and thus you actually know whether it's valid or not

but I'll stop

but I always default to "not sure" if I don't know

I never get a chance to actually evaluate most flags before they are validated :P

user55340
3:40 PM
@gnat that question is one of the few that we've seemed to be able to maintain and use as a wiki-lock.

@enderland exactly- the timout effect makes participating in the validation really a snap judgement to begin with

oh it's 600 votes on questions

user55340
The other thing is "look at all the linked questions"

Questions -> Sort Oldest to Newest -> Downvote (repeat x600)

3:42 PM
@MichaelT yeah. We only fail to find a... less inappropriate tag for it. Any ideas? I thought about 'skills' but it hardly feels right. Learning probably fits, but it's STCI. I feel stuck

user55340
@gnat its one of those awful questions for tagging. Whatever we have it will be either not quite right or subject to trying to clean up.

user55340
@Ixrec I would loath to have that be a valid tag for the main site.

user55340
We'd either end up pulling a SF or having half the new users posting to that tag.

3:45 PM
what's the daily limit on votes?

user55340
(IIRC, the SF incident involved creating an off topic tag and then merging all of the off topic tags into it and then closing / deleting everything that was tagged thus)

@Ampt 40 if you vote only questions. 30 if you vote only answers

user55340
@Ampt up down? - its fuzzy.

does it even need the tag? why not just get rid of that

@enderland it doesn't need contests. And resources is wrong per tag wiki. And puzzles are close to be burninated

user55340
3:46 PM
@gnat 80 if you vote only on questions that will get deleted by the roomba before the vote reset on the first 40.

@gnat Interesting - thanks!

user55340
> Josh Crozier's technique for earning Vote Early, Vote Often was especially noteworthy, so here is a note. Most users didn't earn that hat until the seventh day of the event at the earliest, because it required casting 250 votes, and there's a 40-vote-per-day limit. He got it on Dec. 17—the fourth day after the hats were unveiled—by casting several votes on posts that were later deleted and still counted towards the hat but not the daily limit.

in fact it's the last remaining question in contests

I would be surprised if we could come up with a tag for that question that does not encourage off-topic questions without being blatantly inaccurate

@MichaelT yeah riding over roomba, how could I forget

3:48 PM
because that question is 100% off-topic

I just got done with the first "how we're going to do Agile" meeting.

And? How are you going to do agile?

Poorly.

user55340
@ThomasOwens well first you write a requirements document, then you get stakeholder sign off on it... then you design how you... wait a moment... this is fragile!

I'm stinging because I was left with the impression that I contribute very little to the team so there's no need to really define what my responsibilities are with regard to the process.
I feel pretty upset right now.

4:19 PM
@KitZ.Fox I'm not sure I understand. How was this impression created?

@MetaFight All of the process was dev-centric. I asked if devs were going to write user stories then. "Yes, I expect so." OK, so are the devs communicating directly with business? "Yes, I expect so." I see.

and what is your role/job in the team?

Apparently zero.

@KitZ.Fox That's...not a good idea. You can't let all of the devs just talk to the customer. Need a single point of communication between the customer/user teams and the development team.

I've seen "let's take up agile" meetings really demoralize project managers and business analysts before. It doesn't need to.

4:21 PM
You can see why I'm feeling upset.

@KitZ.Fox but what is the role you were hired to perform?
BA? PM?

The devs I work with don't want to talk to business.

Tester?

@MetaFight BA.

@KitZ.Fox then who was saying "Yes I expect so" to that question?

4:22 PM
BAs still have a place in the agile world.
Just because devs are also allowed to talk to the users doesn't mean BAs don't do anything.

@Ixrec The project lead.
I shouldn't talk about it. I'm just pissed off. Let's talk about something nicer, help me get my mind off it.

there's this other chatroom I'm in where "tacos" is the official safe word whenever the conversation starts getting uncomfortable

Did I mention poutots in here?

Poutots? Please explain.

Poutine + tater tots.

That could be amazing.

4:24 PM
It is amazing.
AMAZING.

A lot of restaurants here don't serve real poutine. They use something other than cheese curds. Why is that?

I could make them right now except I don't have cheese curds. :/

I feel like poutine is only a real food when you're < 30. At >= 30 poutines are a challenge you will never win.

@ThomasOwens Most places have shredded cheese on hand for other dishes. Cheese curds aren't particularly useful.

Want to know what is a challenge that you'll never win? Garbage Plates.

4:26 PM
@ThomasOwens Getting a hold of cheese curds isn't always easy I guess. I know I can't find them here. When I last tried to make a poutine we drained cottage cheese for an hour.

@ThomasOwens Mmm, hot dogs. Never tried the garbage plate.

@ThomasOwens macaroni salad? bleh. Everything else: aye.
tacos.
I'm trying to control my eating habits. stop tempting me!

@MetaFight This is a bland macaroni salad. Not many seasonings other than mayo, the vegetables, and a bit of garlic.

@Snowman only allowed in certain states.

@KitZ.Fox it was combined with an infection in my middle ear as well. It was a really great month for me.

@Ixrec I guess it's valid that I want to kick shit over right now. I'd go hit the heavybag if I hadn't sprained my hand yesterday.

4:42 PM
I was putting liquid lotramin in my ear for 6 weeks.

@JimmyHoffa False. Yuengling EVERYWHERE!

@Ampt I don't think I've ever heard of anything that awful.
And I used to work in a clinic.
That sounds nasty.

@ThomasOwens if only.. Yuengling is possibly the only thing worth a damn in Pittsburgh (other than @maple_shaft)

@KitZ.Fox Surprisingly, It just sounded like ringing most of the time.

Speaking of the Steelers...

4:43 PM
@JimmyHoffa When I was in school, it was cheaper to buy Yuengling than like...PBR or Coors or Keystone.

I don't want to talk about football right now
Maybe next season when the pain isn't so great...

@Ampt Well, that's lucky. I get inner ear infections occasionally. Awful stuff.

Pulls Packer's hat further over head

@Ampt Aww. Sorry. They had a pretty good year.

@KitZ.Fox Which team were you watching... they were awful for 9/10 of the season hahaha
but I still love them. They gotta get their playcalling shit figured out though

4:45 PM
@ThomasOwens I remember when I was out there older folk saying that decades ago it was seen as utter garbage beer that people would hardly pay anything for. Got a revival with the craft beer revival I suspect because it actually has flavor which is not what people wanted in the 80s I guess, but people realized flavor in beer is a good thing later on.

@Ampt I watched them play the Pats and the Vikings this year, I think. Maybe one other game.
I remember enjoying watching them play.

user55340
@Ampt you could have switched to being a Bears fan after moving across that border...

@KitZ.Fox Miss the one where we lost to the Bears, at home, on thanksgiving?

user55340
Then the disappointment would have been expected.

@Ampt Oh ouch. Yeah, I did miss that one.

4:46 PM
Or it just had really terrible brand management decades ago. Meh. It's good beer so I don't care.

I remember being really surprised the first time I drank Yuengling.

@KitZ.Fox I was there in Lambeau for that game. It was still awesome. Just not so great to lose haha

I like some of the ultra local ones. Trillium, Night Shift, Lord Hobo.

user55340
The 2015 Chicago Bears season was the franchise's 96th season in the National Football League, and the first season under head coach John Fox, the Bears' third head coach in four seasons. The Bears entered the 2015 season with hopes of improving their 5–11 record in 2014. The team started the regular season on a poor note, losing their first three games. In the following six games, the team went 5–3, including a Thanksgiving win over the rivals Green Bay Packers. However, the Bears then lost the first three games in December, and were officially eliminated from playoff contention in week fourteen...

@Ampt don't you just love da bears? My wife just got back from Chicago with some real Pizza in her luggage. Dinner last night (and again tonight) are the awesome. How about Da Bears amirite??

4:47 PM
@Ampt It's never fun to lose, but a good game makes up for a lot. That's what we keep telling the boys anyway.

user55340
> However, the Bears then lost the first three games in December, and were officially eliminated from playoff contention in week fourteen by the Minnesota Vikings.

Next week is going to be hard, because the littlest has decided he likes the Broncos and we're trying to be cool about it.

@JimmyHoffa I hope you fall in a hole and get eaten by angry beavers

@Ampt not angry bears?

@JimmyHoffa Too poetic for my tastes.

user55340
4:48 PM
@Ampt you could have tried to be a Vikings fan instead...

user55340
> As a result, they hosted the Seattle Seahawks in the wild card round of the 2015–16 NFL playoffs, but lost 10–9 after kicker Blair Walsh missed a potential game-winning, 27-yard field goal in the final seconds.

user55340
Ouch... that's gotta hurt.

@KitZ.Fox he's got taste is what you're saying? Boy them Broncos sure is great. Piggers are going all the way this year.

I guess it's good practice for when he decides to ride a motorcycle or write PHP code or something.

@KitZ.Fox I mean, it's not like the pats have a chance anyway.

4:50 PM
@JimmyHoffa No, I'm saying we raise our boys to root for the home team first. Loyalty over reason. pfft This one is always going to go his own way, just to spite us.
@JimmyHoffa Edelman is back, baby.
And most of our injuries are cleared.
I'd give it 50-50 odds.

@KitZ.Fox yeah but they don't have the thin air training or tolerance for our legal local comestibles. They'll be lucky if they can walk straight on the field or stand up without laughing themselves over.

True. That has been a problem for us in the past.
Still. We've got players that Brady can throw to, and at least one running back that can run.
That's better than the last four or five games of the regular season.
I'd feel better if Blount were active, but nothing can be done about that.
And if Nink is out, which he might be, it's going to be tough on our defense.
...but now I'm feeling like that's more detail than you wanted.
