Q: How can we get people to participate on Meta?

Yannis RizosWe have a rather disappointing situation on Programmers.SE. Two discussions that one would think would be enthusiastically supported, are now kind of stale. The first one is on getting our own community blog, and the second one is for our birthday celebration event. The extremely weird stalemat...

I feel that the purpose of the blog should be to answer questions that are good but lack a Q&A style, like "A Beginner's Guide to picking a programming language"

@WorldEngineer That sounds good! Go add it to the Meta question on blog topics :)

user20683
I've got half a mind to do it and then make a flowchart for that

2:11 AM
@WorldEngineer Well it's a good idea and you should post it in the meta question. There's another meta question where you can volunteer to write for the blog, if you wish. But we can't get the blog started if we don't show some active participation, we need a couple more people stepping up...

@YannisRizos Thanks. :) I'm still around; just in a different capacity.

6:07 AM
@AnnaLear No you're not, and it shows... :(

@YannisRizos That's the "different capacity" part.

@YannisRizos @WorldEngineer @AnnaLear Its better that a couple of us start writing the blog

@Ubermensch Goodmorning... Read Mark's answer on this meta question

I know black stars are messages other people stared, and yellow are the ones I stared... What the heck is the white star for?

user2334
@YannisRizos Pinned star: mod-only star that always appears first

@MarkTrapp Oh, now I feel special.... Can you edit it? change thing to think?
thank you ...

If everything was that easy... :)

I'm trying to find a community opposite of StackExchange / Stack Overflow... more like a blogging portal where developers can come post tips / tricks they come across or to state formal opinions on a development approach / pattern / etc. Is there any place like that?
Basically a place for those of us who don't have a blog / wouldn't have the time to maintain one fully to post stuff we feel valuable for others to know about

user2334
@tylerrrr07 Sounds pretty close to Reddit's r/Programming subreddit

That's very similar
The interface seems difficult to find relevant information theres a lack of tags, etc (as far as I can tell initially anyway) and it also seems to be people posting links out to articles and discussing them on Reddit
There may not be much of a drive for something like this but I was thinking for someone like myself who doesn't necessarily have enough time / content to warrant putting up a blog but may want to share things development related content on occasion

user2334
@tylerrrr07 Yeah, generally the link sites don't have good tagging because getting a heterogeneous community to adopt good tagging practices is like herding cats (SE is a good example of that :P). I don't have a whole lot of time to blog either, but one thing that's been good for me to get stuff out has been Tumblr. Very frictionless sharing with tagging and whatnot

@MarkTrapp I'll have to look into Tumblr a bit. A community like SE would be ideal where as I think Tumblr would be less likely of a place for users to find such information (I've never stumbled on a Tumblr page when searching an issue for example - maybe an SEO issue?)
If something like that doesn't exist it would be a cool project to do. I think the most difficult part would be marketing it to get a community actually going

9:57 PM
Now that I've tossed my name into the Programmers moderator race, I saw that there were live chat sessions last time around. Will that be happening again?

user2334
10:07 PM
@ThomasOwens Yep: usually a couple days after the primaries begin (if we have more than 10 candidates) or after the elections proper begin (if we don't)

user2334
You'll get an email from SE asking for your time preferences

@MarkTrapp Cool. I'm looking forward to it. That's something I'd work into my schedule. I hope we have a lot of good candidates for moderator.

user20683
I won't be running. I realistically haven't the time for it at this point.

user2334
@WorldEngineer That's a shame: was hoping you'd run :/

I just looked at the front page of top-rep users. Of the names that I've seen active recently, I think most of them would make good moderators.

user20683
10:23 PM
@MarkTrapp I mean I could still run I'd really have to consider it though. Honestly I probably should, I can make time

user20683
time management is just something that I'll need to get better at anyway

user20683
so might as well start here.

user2334
It's about an hour or so a day, for what it's worth

10:35 PM
No one has asked me any questions on my nomination entry. :( I'm going to go for a run. Maybe someone will ask some questions or ask for elaboration on something that I've said/done/didn't do when I'm out.

11:10 PM
@ThomasOwens There's still 7 days to go. Don't worry, questions will come. (Also, lack of questions can be a good thing, depending on what the questions on other nominations are.)

11:35 PM
