Q: What happened to flag weight?

PersonalNexusI just noticed that my profile on Programmers no longer shows my flag weight. Instead I see the number of helpful flags. At the same time, the definition for the Marshal badge has been changed to "500 helpful flags". Does that mean there is no more flag weight? All that counts now is the number ...

No more flag weight. And this at a time when I was so close to passing @ZaphodBeeblebrox

6:13 AM
@PersonalNexus Ha :) You're closer now, you only need 14 helpful flags... Keep on flagging!
@AnnaLear So I was right in boycotting your bid in the SO elections, you did leave us after all :P Good luck in your new role, we are all proud of you...

I think the flag weight change is good

user20683
it means that people with high flag weights will be less shy about flagging

user20683
when it really is necessary

Hi, would like to ask, what type of questions are for stackoverflow and what type of questions are for programmers stackexchange? they seem too similar for me.

user20683
StackOverflow is for specific implementation/language questions

user20683
Programmers is for algorithmic and software engineering questions

user20683
@ZaphodBeeblebrox is good at explaining these things

10:11 AM
@WorldEngineer Thanks :) btw it's now easier to get the elusive Marshal badge, happy flagging everyone!

11:02 AM
@snowpolar Hmm... any specific question?

Jae
11:26 AM
@snowpolar: Stackoverflow questions are mostly about what's wrong with a specific set of code. P.SE is more conceptual. It's more about thinking than coding.

"What laws is a freely available internet service subject to?" - would this be an acceptable question for Programmers? I'm getting increasingly confused by the recent US trials for non-US-based businesses

@badp I don't think it would be on topic, it's mostly a legal question that the crowd here can't expertly answer

Cool.

that said, it does depend a lot on the actual wording
you can always do a draft and post it here or on meta....
and of course you can just expand it a bit and start a discussion here....
or in a dedicated chat room

Q: Question title that doesn't describe the problem

Adam Davis Pre Edit 4: Pointing out that thread's popularity is a direct result of programming community interest in said subject, and that someone likely stands to become rich and/or famous by solving the problem none of the answers, save my own, came even close to resolving. I posted a question and immediately been downvote by one programmer. I would like to know what did i do wrong in my question. I will not post the question here so you don't think i'm spaning so, if you wold like to help me, i could tell you the question. The idea is for me to learn to ask questions adequately for this site.

4:09 PM
@jgomo3 Hi and welcome to Programmers. I didn't downvote your question and I can't really be sure why it was downvoted. People can downvote for whatever reason they like. You shouldn't worry for a single downvote, it means absolutely nothing.
@jgomo3 You got an answer almost immediately and that's what matters most. The site has a set of guidelines that are outlined in the FAQ, you should read it. Also we have a Meta Site where you can ask questions regarding the site itself and the community
@jgomo3 I'm seeing your question got an upvote, and I just upvoted it myself. See how easy it is to forget about a single downvote?

4:46 PM
@Zaphod Thank you for the guidelines. I appreciate your concerns. Interesting that Meta Site, is were i should put questions like this (so clever that meta stuff).

4:59 PM
@jgomo3 Yeap the meta is the proper place to ask a question was closed, or heavily downvoted. And a fantastic place to get guidance on how to ask better questions.

5:25 PM
@Zaphod I thnk this question[1] is for stackoverflow but i can't comment him that. I think that answering "put that question in stackoverflow" is not correct because i'm accepting the answer as valid. [1]programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/131073/…

5:44 PM
@jgomo3 You will be able to comment when you get 50 rep, that's going to be soon enough. The question is not a good fit for Stack Overflow, they expect questions to have a bit of code in them. It might not be good for here as well...
@jgomo3 Essentially it asks for performance issues, that's on topic here. On Stack Overflow you should ask for problems with your code. And they expect you to tell them not only what's wrong, but what have you tried (and how it didn't work).
@jgomo3 I see you already answered the question, please don't do that. Answers are supposed to answer the question, nothing else.

@Zaphod i just edited that. Now it answer the question.

@jgomo3 Yeap just saw it and removed the part about StackOverflow. Good job.

@Zaphod: i think i should erase the "stackoverflow" part.

@jgomo3 Did it already, don't worry :)

@ZaphodBeeblebrox Cool. Thank you!

The key thing that I think I think newbies miss is that the question you are asking may not be a good question for the site. It might be an awesome question but we only deal in local variables here. Reddit is for Global variables.

@WorldEngineer Including reddit has it's subreddits

user20683
@jgomo3 we're still more focused for better or worse

user20683
also there's collective ownership of questions and answers. We want people to ask good questions and we want to help them make questions better and answers too but sometimes it's hard to determine intent.

@WorldEngineer I didn't think about this philosophy. Did understand that stack is writing for the future, but didn't related the ideas with the collective ownership and the effort to make people ask and answer well. It's great.

Q: What can be done about the remaining closed questions in the "software" tag?

Mark TrappAs part of a cleanup of the software tag mentioned earlier on meta, we need to clean up the closed questions found therein. There's no point in shuffling around tags on questions that are off-topic or bad to begin with: if we can save these highly-upvoted questions, now's the time to do it. 1. ...

We need more people cleaning crap... Please? Pretty please?

Q: Request for comment: structured tag cleanups

Mark TrappSo one of the major problems we have on Programmers is the proliferation of bad tags. We've had a number of discussions and posse requests for different tags, but killing a tag—when it's even possible—tends to be incredibly ad hoc. So, based on the recent software tag cleanup, I'd like to propos...

Mods I just got a nifty flag declined message "declined - flags should only be used to make moderators aware of content that requires their intervention"... When I flagged the answer was just a link. But it was my mistake, as it was inside the edit grace period, and the OP expanded the answer a couple of minutes back. Sorry for wasting your time...

user2334
@YannisRizos Give users at least five minutes after posting an answer to expand it :P

@MarkTrapp Yeap, I know I know... Second time that happens... Next time, I'll punish myself, no flags for a month...
