12:10 AM
@NathanOsman i got nitroshare to run on my rasberry pi

\o/
The new version?

That was the .2 one
Haven't tried the new one on it yet, would need to get qt 5 on there first

Ah, okay. That's still really really cool.

now i just need to learn to do packaging...

12:39 AM
everything i saw about packaging for arm wasn't different, i was just wondering about cross-build or distribution (how to get it in ppa)

1:20 AM
I think you need to explicitly request ARM builds for your PPA.

I get that. Part of the question is whether the makefile should use gcc or gcc-arm****. I'm guessing gcc or g++ without the trailer since it's probably in a native sandbox not a cross-build?
I'll probably just have to try it and see. No biggie. Moving on. It shouldn't have dragged on this long anyway.

@Luis I was just going to ping you because of this, because your an expert in that. But you won me :)
Also, maybe the user will protest because the dupe is for Intel instead of nVidia..

@Lucio yeah, if the user protests ok but since it was another question about comparing video cards, I might as well put the 3 most popular ones on the same question. Saves from having a which is better intel vs nvidia, intel vs ati, nvidia vs ati, via vs intel..... Forever youunng!! I want to be forever youung!!

jrg
nice @NathanOsman

What is?

jrg
less.js

Oh, right.
Except the Ubuntu maintainers did something odd between Precise & Quantal.
They renamed the node executable to nodejs.

jrg
uh
that isn't "odd"
that's to avoid a conflict.

2:06 AM
Oh?

jrg
> There is a naming conflict with the node package (Amateur Packet Radio Node Program), and the nodejs binary has been renamed from node to nodejs. You'll need to symlink /usr/bin/node to /usr/bin/nodejs or you could uninstall the Amateur Packet Radio Node Program to avoid that conflict.
from the official Ubuntu PPA page. - github.com/joyent/node/wiki/…

I would uninstall the amateur package
kill it
kill it good!

jrg
hunt it down.

nobody messes with node.js and gets away with it. Get' em yeoman!!
2
Where's a "grunt" when you need them

How does that work for packaging though... I either apply the Debian patch that fixes all instances of 'node' in the build scripts or...
Actually there is a nodejs-legacy package that provides the symlink.

2:29 AM
Wow...they weren't kidding about Ubuntu-touch not being ready for prime-time, but I really like the user interface.

lol
one of the devs was demoing it...
it wouldn't turn on for a while while it charged ;p
its pretty impressive when it works

Some things to note:
1) Lenses are god - I wonder if we'll be able to add our own lenses
2) The built-in game doesn't probe for resolution and the start-game button is off-screen on the right on nexus7 - ouch
3) Half the features on the product page aren't in the stock image yet - ouch
4) The UI is delicious and it's pretty responsive by comparison to other products - Yes, I just called a UI delicious
5) It gives you pretty naked access to the device - I like
6) There is very little in the way of documentation on the packaging and app-install process for people that aren't using it in conju
Oh, most of the built-in apps don't do proper rotation detection for screen orientation. That would be at the top of my fix this list.

Q: Run service after logging in on an X session

qtubuntuI used Ubuntu 12.04. I want run automatic a service after login with LightDM. This service not start on boot, not start for after boot, before X is initialized. Plz help me.

I have installed this package, "shutdown-at-night". Now I am trying to run it in terminal but I don't know what to type. Typing shutdown and then pressing tab would not do anything
I mean how would I figure out the terminal command of a package to run it ?

@Suhaib the package has no executable
I am pretty sure you are supposed to edit the cron for that
nano /etc/cron.d/shutdown-at-night

@LuisAlvarado Oh, What did you type to know that is not executable ?

Actually I went to Synaptic, selected the package, right click and went to properties, then Installation tab
then saw the whole list of things the package installed.

aha, I used sudo apt-cahce show shutdown-at-night and this what they wrote in the description section, "description-en: System to shut down clients at night, and wake them in the morning
Schedule shutdown in the evening, and uses nvram-wakeup or wakeonlan to wake
clients up in the morning."
Going to check out the synaptic description now
@LuisAlvarado thanks for the tip

3:59 AM
if you want a quicker way do dpkg -L shutdown-at-night
I did the synaptic because I had it open at that moment ^^

@LuisAlvarado, OK, Now that What I was looking for^

2 hours later…
5:45 AM
I've almost finished packaging the latest version of LESS for Precise, Quantal, and Raring - and all of the builds are (of course) in my PPA here,

2 hours later…
8:06 AM
morning!

hey there @Rinzwind.

oh hai - almost thought the Internet died today. Rather slow atm.

gack. tomorrow is moving day. been packing for an entire week.

The more you have the more work this is. A friend of mine once moved with 3 cardboard boxes only. That was done in an hour or so.

8:23 AM
I try to be Zen about it. Then I found a woman who has a whole bunch of utensils which are great for making soup, and bread, and stuff. :-/
It used to be difficult to purge the books/movies/music and misc computer parts
What am I really going to do with an acoustic coupler???

Last move I binned hundreds of VHS video tapes... they had a ton of weight or so.
Purging books is impossible here (my better half insists of keeping all of them).
But I succeeded moving my Centronics printer cable ;P

The thing with cables is, there's always a day when you could really use that cable you binned some time ago.
And chances are, buying a new one is three times as expensive now, becaue they're one hell of a lot rarer.

I remember these days. Then I don't remember in what box I put them (or if I did bin them).

There's always the small hope that it is indeed just misplaced.

The one you need always is misplaced.

8:41 AM
shudder hate dealing with legacy connectors
Though I do miss hanging with the telco guys and flipping bits on a CSU/DSU to troubleshoot bit-pattern failures. :-/
my last modem card is getting tossed tonight.
I'm tempted to change my ringtone to that whizzbuzz handshake negotiation.

What if a directory is named "Trash" could it be used for? That's some challenge! Good they had not named it Litter, Rubbish, Waste, or Garbage...
Ah! I missed Paperbin... ;)

Don't some localisations call it a rubbish bin?

But the directory name stays with .Trash to not confuse admins.

Q: Do Nvidia drivers work better than AMD drivers?

user1202394I am pulling my hair out trying to get AMD's graphics drivers to work on Ubuntu. I have an AMD A4-5300 with an integrated graphics card. I am planning on getting a Nvidia driver but I am curious if I am going to have to go through another mess just trying to get it working.

(to get sublime which works fine withouth sets id)
doesn't suggest anything

I think has been marked as dupe unnecessarily

@geezanansa Not unless the OP can provide more specific details. It's up to the original asker if they want to pursue it

The asker appears to not understand which driver is of any use for their hardware. After finding [this] (askubuntu.com/q/124292/102029) wanted to share with asker of askubuntu.com/q/282227/102029
@maggotbrain Just thought would bring it to your attention

both questions - the dupe and intel are really too vague anyway - IMHO - both should be closed as not constructive.

ProGNOMmersI installed php5-fpm package using apt; then I made some changes to the PHP configuration files. Now I would get the diffs between the original files versions (the ones of the package installed) and the current. How to do it?

@maggotbrain I read at as somebody who just wants to use their pc and did not know much terminology and simply did not understand what driver to use.

@maggotbrain that's a weird/bad theme-ing issue if i'm reading it right.

11:34 AM
yup

the dragon naturally speaking one is similar to one that we talked about on meta and the consensus was don't close (they're really just asking for how to make an audio pseudo-device). The original discussion was something similar with "rickrolling your friends on skype" or similar for a video device

@CallmeV Go for it. The questions just seem...off to me. in such quick sucession with such bad typing. I'd be happy to be wrong.

@CallmeV: the issue for me is, its hard to tell what he really wants
realtime translated subtitles?
and he makes a clear reference to dragon, which AFAIK is windows only

it's not. it runs on multiple platforms, although i don't remember if linux is one of them. i do KNOW people that run it in wine though
it has a client for mobiles for example

which should be made clearer. ;)
actually, I'll try to comment to that effect

11:55 AM
these are some odd, new questions.

anyone know how to do something like

mount /dev/sda/opt /home/user/opt
is that even possible?

@maggotbrain yes. we've been getting lots of odd questions more recently

@CallmeV well. they are abrupt and they have a similar language pattern is what I am noticing.

that's fair

do I really have to go through the trouble of first mounting /dev/sda somehwere and then bind mounting a directory inside of that partition?
cant I do it all in one fell swoop?

11:57 AM
you don't mount /dev/sda/name to anything. the easiest option is just softlinking /opt

mount --bind /dev/sda/opt /home/user/opt

you could mount /dev/sdaX to /home/user/opt

@call me v ... right but I can't bind mount a directory inside of /dev/sda until I first mount /dev/sda right?
I guess that makes sense... I just didn't want to go through the work

you don't mount sda (disk) you mount sdaX(partition)

right . like sda1 or sda2 right

12:01 PM
yes. just let it mount and make a softlink and the whole discussion is solved

thnks
for being there ;D

i think we all most of us try to be helpful

yep
im trying to bind mount a directory inside another partition as /home but it's not working. I know im doing something silly here
I just dont want to devote a whole partition to /home
but i have to mount the partition first with fstab and then bind mount home at startup
i put them both in fstab but it still not working
ill get it eventually i guess

12:16 PM
if you're tryomg to do mount --bind /dev/sda/opt /home/user/opt you need something more like mount --bind /dev/sda6 /home/user/opt or something in /dev/mapper if you're using lvm or luks. ask the question on site including the output of sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda and df

Oli
@JoshuaRobison You'll need to mount both / and whatever volume your home is in first. Then you can do a bind mount. You can't directly mount something like /dev/sda1/home

tryomg == trying

Oli
And /home needs to to exist on the root filesystem. it can be empty. If it's not, it'll be overridden.

^^ yep both correct statements and may be the root of the issue. i was just trying to get a picture of what everything looked like so i could lineate the directions and explain the whys instead of piecing together what is being done/not done.

My girlfriend doesn't understand why our moving is going to hurt my home systems uptime. :-(
On the bright side, I have a girlfriend who understands uptime. :-)

12:34 PM
if it really concerns you, full UPS would have fixed that. some guys at the break-in challenge at defcon last year did that to just pick up the target tower and walk it out of the room with it still running (which was made out of bounds for later contestants, but was allowed for creativity).

ChrisI would like to know if anyone can help me with installing Ubuntu on VirtualBox 4.1.12. I'm really having trouble installing ubuntu on there. I am a first time user but always wanted to give it a try, but just need a bit of help.

So it can be considered Duplicate or Not constructive?

I voted dupe.

Now 2 votes for dupe.

I believe it is grey-zone on topic as it asks for installing Ubuntu.

It's not a duplicate and it's not not constructive
@Takkat has the answer, he just made it a comment
I mean, sureeee it's Windows XP, and rightttt it's not technically Ubuntu as a host. But it's installing Ubuntu via X method, it's an edge case but I'd consider it on-topic. Not going to turn them away simply because they choose to use a host system other than Ubuntu

1:59 PM
@MarcoCeppi it's mentioned in the last line of the dupe question but not elaborated much - let me add a shot there.

@Takkat I'd add a shot to the main question, then simply add that as an answer here and then a link to the big question as "Here's a reference on how to do it right"
then a dealwithit.gif

Add an updated answer with a heading of OS version

It seems many users here prefer to keep these questions instead of deleting them
@CallmeV, Lets talk from a New user perspective, When an Ubuntu user wants something he will search for it. He will not edit these questions with an updated answer

Fixing them like this askubuntu.com/questions/26632/how-to-install-eclipse is how it has been done for a long time. Wanting rep for asking a question that was asked before and being unwilling to just add an answer is not a solution.

@CallmeV, I know that. But I was talking about outdated questions, Why don't we just remove it since we already have other questions with updated answers.

Duplicate merges solve that. Asking again just creates more harder to track duplicates.

Fair point. I would think if you really wanted to know why the site has operated that way or propose a better way you would ask on meta though. I'll just switch it to ignore so I don't see the same issue discussion thing again.

@CallmeV chatting is better IMO, And someone already posted the same question in meta, But his post was closed as dupe. so I am afraid they will not listen if I propose something new. :-p
I mean just looking at the answers it seems many users with high rep prefer to keep these questions
@NathanOsman has already suggested an idea, but no one implemented his idea yet

A: Should questions about using end-of-life Ubuntu releases be closed?

Nathan Osmanj-johan-edwards pointed out a very important drawback to keeping these questions open and answering them: "What about the threat that Google will point people to "old version" problems (ie the Can I Delete Parts Of The Internet problem) and they will apply counter-productive "old version" sol...

evening peeps o/

^^ it's a peep (for anyone who might not know about that particular marshmallow candy)

Anything exciting?

@mateo_salta at whom?

Just in general
Ahh. My tablet auto capitalized. Everything...

9:30 PM
well, i'm finding qml interesting to work with and the flashing to ubu-touch didn't brick my new nexus 7 so i'm okay on that front. working on a word-game pack for touch and some other staple apps. i figure if you build the things while it's still alpha, you'll be first out of the gate when you can sell apps

Cool, how is the touch?

the device or ubu?
i like both, but i have specific concerns with both

Either or, i almost bought a nexus 7 but it didnt have hdmi out.

That's a fair point. Then, a usb-vga/hdmi adapter is not cheaper than a raspi that you could do x forwarding to...
Wait, i haven't checked, but ubu-touch sure doesn't look like it runs vanilla X

Hello, if someone "answers" my question (i.e. writes something in the answer box), but there is actually no new information, or it's just not an answer, but unhelpful generic stuff: can I say (politely) that it's not useful in the comments? Or am I just supposed to leave it ther?

9:36 PM
I generally respond to those with "nice effort but this doesn't really help". Note: It can also be a problem with your question. Bug report veiled as a question is an excellent example.
Okay here goes:
I like the UI. I find it more effective than Android or iOS.

Most of the stock apps are broken out of the box on the nexus7 I have.

It's viable if specific hardware is chosen, improved, and supported.

@Call me V: no, it's a genuine non-googleable question.

Hmm, gnome remix vs ubuntu gnome...

yep
@mateo_salta: you looked at my profile?

if you're talking about this one: askubuntu.com/questions/281011/… I think it should be closed as subjective narq...not because I don't like it but because what do you like? not being objective

yes, this one. I'm not asking "what do you like better?"
quoting "which of the two comes with the more advanced state of Gnome, out of the box? If the version numbers of Gnome are the same in both, are there any other differences to the Gnome-Shell experience?"

9:44 PM
ux == user experience == subjective, but i'm done talking about it. i hope you understand what i meant

@Bennypr0fane It helps to get a better idea, his answer was generic, but its might be more of an opnion question, but I woul go with ubuntu gnome because it will be supported on relese. Plus I dont think they are seperate projects

@Call me V: sorry, I think I don't. nevermind

it's fine. i've been getting that a LOT recently.

So, Ubuntu gnome = more advanced version of gnome remix

actually a developer did give me a good answer on IRC ubuntu-gnome, but I'm not writing it as answer to my question, because 1) I don't remember his name 2) I can't tell for sure his actually a developer and 3) I'm not sure IRC chat is a quotable source
He said that Raring (or Gnome in Raring) will be better supported regardless of the shorter life cycle, and that it's been receiving updates that haven't arrived yet in 12.10. So if this accurate, my answer is 13.04
I think I'm also being pretty specific about what I'm asking. Why you guys saying it's subjective?

9:55 PM
Its like asking if vista is better than win 7, if you like gnome remix thats fine( its a unsupported remix)while ubuntu gnome is a newer version of it an will be supported.
