My comment got 3 stars !! ---------------------------------------------------->>

@AmithKK it's quite the easy task to perform if you're in the sunken city of atlantis
little did you know i'm actually a merman

Using chrome 20. Seems very good and fast. Also, always downloading syndrome has gone.
Will never return to FF

awesome.

Are you too?

FF still has its uses though (loads of plugins)
i run chromium not chrome

4:07 PM
But, this version of chrome seems wonderfully good.

okay...

You must try it

if i get a job at google i'll drink the chrome koolaid
i hear their JS engine improvements are epic though
i think i figured it out ... no premature adulation though. i usually have about three iterations of \o/, /o\, \o/, /o\, \o/, /o\ when I'm doing packaging stuffs

-|\/-o-\/|-

the /o\ is supposed to denote me feeling like this:

4:18 PM
It is normal, if you have a windows in front of you
especially, when it is XP
right?

especially when it's 8 on a non-touch device

oh, yes

or when struggling to work around a packaging limitation

It's more true
or trying to install or run another os in your virtual box, with 1GB Ram
An old and classic dupe askubuntu.com/q/167089/61218

@AnwarShah Close-voted. 2 more votes needed.

Sorry, I spent all 24

@EliahKagan already did
any progress on your OSRSS project @George
I find it interesting
if anyone else is interested in that type of thing, i found this helpful wiki.osdev.org/Category:Tutorials

Is there any shortcut to switch between keyboard layouts? (On Windows, it is Left ALT+SHIFT)

@Santosh I don't know, but if there isn't I'm sure there's a way to do it from the command line and define an accelerator to run a script
@AnwarShah see there are still good questions to be asked ;)

hmm.. But I think, that is already asked
wait a sec...

if you dig it up, that would be awesome

4:38 PM
@Santosh using unity i guess?

Q: What are Launchpad packaging recipes and how can I use them?

dv3500eaAs I understand it, packaging recipes are a way to automate packaging into a PPA from a bzr branch. What I'm not sure of is how to go about setting one up. I have read the documentation but for some reason it still leaves me a litte confused about what to do. What is the step by step process of...

needs a real answer that isn't link dumping...

Q: How to switch language keyboard combination?

Itay MoavI would like to type Hebrew in Ubuntu. I tried downloading the Hebrew language pack and then setting alt-shift as my layout-change shortcut in the Options section of "Keyboard Layout". However, when I actually press alt-shift, nothing happens. How can I switch my keyboard layout to Hebrew?

@AnwarShah good show

@aking1012 I agree
with your question launchpad things

it's a relatively upvoted question, you you might get the outvoting an accepted answer badge if you dug in to it

4:47 PM
@Santosh you need to assign a custom shortcut
@aking1012 ?? still very low

it only has to get to 10 for the badge

oh. yes
10 voted questions are nice

i was referring to this one:

25+ voted questions are good

seems like a candidate for a relatively rare badge...just saying

4:51 PM
You should go for that

i'm working on that maven packaging one

There are 2 gold badges, awarded to no one
Those badges should be named "Diamond"

we tend to close questions that reach -5 instead of let them linger. i consider nobody having that badge a compliment to the site members/mods

then that badge should be closed instead first

there are some at -5 or less, but they are few

4:55 PM
the badge need to be deleted

Q: Install won't work on an HP Pavillion G7

RobertI am trying to install Ubuntu11.10 on my HP Pavillion G7 but when I reboot the purple screen comes up and then the display just dies out. Am I missing something important? Im running it with the Wubi thingy and it still will not come up

close votes

Legendary should be the only Diamond badge
@AmithKK Sorry, we are closed

it's relevant to other sites. and for some sites it's good. say SO. you could be saying "this is a really bad idea, but if you REALLY want to do it..." etc

BBT
Good Night

BBT=? @AmithKK

4:57 PM
back tomorrow

@AmithKK night then.

Ubuntu 10.04 Alternate CD Support Cycle, End of Life (EOL), LTS? http://askubuntu.com/questions/167133/ubuntu-10-04-alternate-cd-support-cycle-end-of-life-eol-lts?atw=1 #lts

@AnwarShah I think foss could get it if he wanted to
someone will eventually for only answering 200-rep bounty questions

Yes. Seems he is the only candidate for that

i think the issue is the people that could get it are more concerned about spreading rep so more people can participate in site maintenance...just my opinion
badges should have progress reports. like percentage to completion...

5:01 PM
Most easiest one is fanatic, imo
@aking1012 some badges have progress indicators...

easiest is unsung hero. just only answer registered 1-rep users

but not actually reports
how?

orly?

the even don't accept

yeah they do

5:02 PM
only say in a comment "Thanks, you are my savior"
blah blah..
even One asked me in a comment, How can I accept?
when i said to him, accept one if you satisfied
there are 99 fanatic
The only gold badge that has more earner is famous question
but that is a luck badge !
356 famous question earner
you're the first to earn unsung hero!
There are only 5 unsung hero
I got close to that badge once.

There's Tenacious first (19 only) :)
Hi (back from work)

@Takkat hi
You are a pulseaudio badge holder !

I pulled unsung on SU

Yeah, don't know why. I know nothing about what to do when there's "no sound"

How can I have preference set on apt mirrors.. i.e, scan mirrors in a particular order when trying to fetch a package..

5:09 PM
I saw many answers from you on sound related questions

umm... googling parallel-ly

like if a mirror is down? that's more complicated than pinning/apt-preference

I don't even think you can automatically choose another mirror, but I may just be dull on that
@AnwarShah I had to dig into sound a bit some time ago. Its frustrating because of lack of documentation. It considerably improved recently.

You may remember, once I corrected a typo in your command
and you thanked me for that

Yeah, I always like this - Typos are evil.

5:14 PM
I also gone through a sound problem
so, I had to search many questions
But, finally did my own solution

I'm one of those people who just don't see their own typos.
Own solutions are far the best!

@Takkat ^-- that and me too

@aking1012 like if I have a couple local mirrors, then a national mirror, and I want the local ones used whenever possible.

that is not actually a typo

and use external ones only when there is a miss on local mirrors

5:15 PM
get-sinks instead of list-sinks may be

@aking1012 lol

@Mahesh if you mean don't even try external mirrors in that case, idk.

@AnwarShah yeah they changed terminology over the years, very disturbing...

I thought so. though i don't know anything

hmm... I'm trying that. Having a local apt-caching level kind of solves my problem, but its still evil because it may fetch from anywhere.

5:17 PM
When I write answers from work I only have Ubuntu in a slow VM so mostly I try commands by heart. That may be a fail

No comments needed...
just humbleness

and how can I get apt to use proxy servers to connect only when it connects to certain mirrors? /etc/environment affects globally..

@Mahesh You could try to figure out what's behind "Select Best Server".
I never use that feature because what's best today maybe worst tomorrow

Q: How can I get apt to use a mirror close to me, or choose a faster mirror?

ajmitchDownloading from the main Ubuntu archive is slow even when it's not release day, how can I get apt-get to automatically use a mirror that is close to me?

@Mahesh^^

yeah, had a look at that, but not much use.. unless i dig source code..

@AnwarShah Hi. You were interested in discussing something in chat. I am here. (If you prefer a separate room, that's fine too.)

5:22 PM
It does not select the best but the closest based on loccation... Hm

I'll keep searching.. and may be i'll hack something to get things done...

@Takkat some may call that a fail. i call that epic dedication

@EliahKagan I think, you have rooms already

@aking1012 I call that boring work ;P

that too

dedication sounds way better though

Which is not true, but sometimes I have to wait for more items to pop in.

Can someone tell me what repo has this?

Who here uses the IRC?

I'm not able to find that..
@LordofTime /me

5:24 PM
@Mahesh that looks more like a third party app
apps on the app store don't need to be in a repo

@LordofTime I'm CAPABLE of using irc, but i usually don't

hmm...

@Mahesh @aking1012 would either of you attend an IRC classroom session on Bugs 101
if only to say you attended

time?

depends on the when
example: i don't see myself using the wireless at defcon

5:26 PM
1 more close vote needed in each of these 2 questions:

@Mahesh that links to xdg-open apt://fullcircle-issue-59 so that's not a ppa

Q: Installation of ubuntu v12.04

BillI downloaded v 12.04, on installation it gets to iSCSI, I by-pass this to continue partioning, the screen then goes purple with a space bar at the bottom and has been for 2 and a half hours? I'm also using the ubuntu Graphical Installer and my screen looks nothing like the description on your web...

Mohamed TarekI have Ubuntu 12.04 unity and when I try to do a sudo apt-get update it fails to connect to archive.ubuntu.com which also fail to connect via browser, her's what I get in terminal: moqane@home:~$ sudo apt-get update [sudo] password for moqane: Ign http://security.ubuntu.com precise-security InR...

done

@Mahesh @aking not until Ubuntu User Days, likely in january

@Takkat Thats what I've been wondering..

5:28 PM
/me is trying to gauge whether people would attend.

@LordofTime Done.

@LordofTime possibly

but do remind us.. :P

But it would be great to be able to publish documents on Ubuntu to catch by apt

5:29 PM
bublish is gone

I need a pfft face.

@LordofTime you've got me on linkedin which should reach my gmail if i disappear for some reason

@aking1012 indeed, i'll just stab you is all :P
grabs the emailstabber

Mr. Bublish the great inventor of keyboards that autocorrect according to mind-streams

@aking1012 it may not happen, which is why i'm only gauging interest just now
i fully plan to hold a Bugs 101 session
well... either i'll do it or BugSquad/BugControl will
a lot of the MOTUs think it'd be a good idea

5:31 PM
i think a "wow this bug affects me and i really want it fixed" link to a gun.io bounty could be useful. just saying

i mean there are probably a lot of people capable of writing patches that don't want to deal with packaging

BBT

well you can write the packages and upload them to the bugs
and then someone comes through and does the debdiff
that's typically how i fix bugs
let someone else patch the bug, then i debdiff it
geez....

yeah. is there a way to say a "wishlist" needs packaging bug could point to something from ppa?

5:33 PM
i've single handedly closed 4 area51 proposals
@aking wishlist bugs are handled differently
far differently
if its needs-packaging, its handled by a different team

fair point. i more meant i'm working on packaging something that's in that area.

if its a "I want this feature in $software", then it gets upstreamed
if its a "I hate you now go die" bug, its spam, and LPAdmins show up
and depending on other bugs, well...
lets not go there :P
i mean, for example
there's a bug in the builders for the repos
where backported builddeps cant work for building
it makes some backports impossible

kk. i take the point. i'll ping you if i get it packaged/working with the specific case and you can point me somewhere

typically whenever i see a bug that needs packaging, i let someone else do the work with the diffs
and the patches, and then I do the debdiffs
and then poof, uploads are either accepted or rejected by the sponsors team
or in some cases the SRU team
or in other cases the backporters team

5:55 PM
nautilus should have a filecopy progress applet

it does?
:P
its called the file transfer window
if you want the applet go get kde and dolphin

gtk ftw

then you are a complainer!
COMPLAINERS ARE EVIL
THEY SHOULD BE PUNISHED

commences to patching it himself

forces @aking1012 to use Windows ME for 16 days

5:57 PM
i'ld rather use a beagleboard with lynx and a phone numeric keypad for web-apps

you get Windows ME instead
the alternative is Windows 8

at least ME has usb 2.0 support and no fake touchscreen
intuitively thinks LoT is about to say windows 8 it is!!! ipitythefoo

@aking1012 good job self talking

6:15 PM
@aking1012 actually you're lucky i was on a phone call :p

hi

THE ENDING! i mean, HI!

@tachyons hi
What's the time in your area?
And greetings for Ramadan!

@AnwarShah thanks

@tachyons thanks.
but i am discussing a serious topic with Eliah Kagan
:)

@LordofTime is displeased with time. considers renaming himself to Lord of Relativity in order to overrule time
@GeorgeEdison are they just filling space to end of sector or whatever?

I can show you, one sec.

@aking1012 i should call myself Lord of Time and Space and Light and Matter and Everything. :P

cof cof get a room

6:34 PM
@BrunoPereira LOL

@GeorgeEdison GHEX! its been AGES since i've seen that

The first 11 bytes disassemble to what I posted in my question.
Disassembling the rest yields: paste.ubuntu.com/1106910

@GeorgeEdison yeah i get it. it's probably some header+zero-length-data+trailer stuff inserted to maintain format

6:51 PM
i guess proper troubleshooting steps would be seeing if the extra stuff happens when you compile the obj or when you link it in to see who is at fault

Can anyone help me out with a problem?
network manager's drop down menu stopped having the VPN section that lets me connect to my work VPN
I'm running xubuntu 12.04

really sorry...i've never encountered that. i would test by installing ubuntu-desktop if you have the space and seeing if it comes back. if it does, then it's probably a missing dependency in there somewhere

I have just get outspoken badge
but how?

Ended up fixing it by disabling then re-enabling networking.
/me shrugs

> Posted 10 messages in chat that were starred by 10 different users.

7:01 PM
@DavidOneill idk. maybe some kind of polling fail

I never see any of my comments starred more than 3

@AnwarShah not all at once. cumulative

Why is naming a software product so difficult?

@Greg because everyone wants to call their product "Super-epic-awesome-sauce"

@aking1012 Now sure what you mean by a polling fail

7:02 PM
@aking1012 lol...

@DavidOneill if there's some file it's trying to read to populate the list, and it fails gracefully, the result could theoretically be an empty slot
it's a wild stab i know, but it would also explain why it came back on restart

@aking1012 Ah, ok, so if it didn't get populated until after it had already been read by network manager
that would make sense

again. wild stab. i haven't read ANY code that would suggest that. just some logic
@George - looks like you got an answer. empty sections...so I guess I was right-ish
slaps himself for not firing up IDA

7:24 PM
Yup, that helps.
It's only 13 bytes now.
Now tries to get the bootloader to enable protected mode...

if you hit a tough spot check out that osdev site i linked earlier. it should be there

7:43 PM
I enjoy IDA.

me too, although i need to get better with hexrays

However, I cannot stand the console interface, and it's the ONE thing I need Windows for, ironically.

there has been a QT interface on linux for a while...
older versions also run fine in wine

Really? How an I that ignorant?
I despise Wine, though.

I use it because I must

7:46 PM
Wine is always painful and an excuse to use Windows software. Since most open-source Windows software has been ported, you're left with some closed-source that there isn't a Linux binary for.

Thanks!

Hello all, I have a quick question about rep before I hit the hay
Why does my total rep differ in Meta from the main site?

it just takes time to sync
check after midnight utc

That was my second question
When does the day end

SE resets at 00:00 UTC as far as i can tell from experience

My total rep for the day is 86 and its still 86 1 hr after midnight
Was just being curious, I dont have a life :-)
Thanks

Q: Giving Credit for an Edit

Stephen MyallSomeone did a really nice job enhancing one of my answers and I have a simple question. Is there any way I can transfer rep as a thank you? Do I have any other options to give him credit? I,m not sure what the protocol is.
