@aking1012: there is -- use iptables to redirect the rtmp port to the`rtmpsuck` proxy (part of rtmpdump), open video in browser, rtmpsuck dumps all info to console and even begins "saving" the file (but in realtime); use info to dl ;)

nice.
o/ @foss

i'm a sock-puppet ... hope this is not the same conversation as yesterday :P
hi ya

not really. just something at the ready

@izx ... avatar change!

hurray, just filed a couple of bugs in quantal

8:33 AM
... just a million more to go.
what did you find?

gnome-tweak-tool crashing and retext doing magic dance

Good Morning All

@Mitch hi-there!

@izx What's up with the new image :)
@fossfreedom Hello

heya Mitch

8:35 AM
@jokerdino hello

@izx u got a new gravatar?
or is it a different izx? :P

Ctrl-F5
Show desktop button is now chameleonic

@Mahesh it's a new avatar

i don't like it [chameleonic show desktop button] though

anything useful in quantal ... or is it just cosmetic stuff turning up in the updates at the moment?

8:40 AM
nothing great has landed in Quantal so far
they are porting stuff to python3, new indicator-session landed and new workspace switcher in proposed
and chromium updated to v20

I'm surprised - half way through the development cycle. Devs must still be on holiday.

most of them are working on 12.04.1

... probably a better use of their time ... 12.04 is just too buggy for me to upgrade yet.

interesting. i find precise quite solid

... it all those "internal error" dialogs that bother me.
thanks bruno...

8:43 AM
ah yeah. they forgot to turn off apport for the final release ;p

We're still closing duplicate ...

Q: How do I optimise Ubuntu for single SSD drive?

artfulrobotI'm about to install Ubuntu Precise on a new laptop with a single 128Gb SSD drive (Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2BAA) and 6GB RAM. Here's what I've learnt so far: Align partitions to 1MiB boundaries Use ext4 (as normal) I've read about TRIM, so I will be adding discard in /etc/fstab As I rarely use it...

Q: How do I optimize the OS for SSDs?

Lars HaugsethWhat steps should be taken before/during/after installation of Ubuntu on a Solid State Drive to optimize performance and ensure maximum durability of the drive?

@jokerdino how can someone forget that? Its so annoying and some of my friends left ubuntu coz of that. now i have anextra wrk to do when i install..

blames QA testers

I hatee precise, to be precise

okay

8:54 AM
okay, not the time for my rants. I'll save them for later

thanks

But all that aside, it would have been wonderful if only there was a bit more testing..

well, we could have used more people

agreed.

and, usually, testers have their apport turned on. so, that can be overlooked

8:56 AM
I started testing Quantal,then dont know why, gave up.. didn't report on tracker yet..
@jokerdino yep. Thatmust have been the reason.

:/

?

why not just test quantal in a VM or something??

izx
@fossfreedom Yeah, took your advice :D (inspired by aking1012 and Mitch)

yeah.. I'll do that on a VM,but my machine is bad. A very badchoice i made..

9:01 AM
@izx Glad I could help :)

@izx the real you ... or a virtual (what I aspire to look like) you?

and dino got some fans here.. :P

no :/

(look at the right sidebar.. starred feed)

fans don't annoy do they? o.O

9:10 AM
They do. infact, thats what they do. :P

called a stalker...

@Mahesh cya
@fossfreedom eeek. i never had any stalker. they get bored after a while =)

you don't know how untrue that is ;p

you dont know how many stars its gonna get. :P

@jokerdino ... you'l go to hell by saying that...

Democracy. What people say, is truth.
@fossfreedom Is he not already in one??

@fossfreedom wait what? o.O
@Mahesh pfftt :p

izx
If hell had a looser firewall I believe @jokerdino would willingly make the trip ;)

9:14 AM
@jokerdino ... look at rolands profile "son of"... and you will be enlightened...

@izx that i might consider.
@fossfreedom looking
hmm, never mind. let's not go to religious talks.

does that make him kratos? <-- kidding

izx
@jokerdino I think it's all tongue in cheek....

@izx i wouldn't want to comment much. My school is a christian one.

... yeah ... we love roland... but not in the same way as the lllladies love jokerdino..

9:17 AM
This doesn't look like it is going to die any time soon.
and, let's not scare the only lady that visits our room ;p
just a thought: the previous chromium PPA was indeed automated. then the maintainer ran out of disk space and the project went to doom.

and...

oh wait, it wasn't a thought. just a side track
and it is still in doom. apparently, they are right now just syncing packages from sid to quantal repo right now

i thought you were going to suggest someone with disk space and bandwidth could have access to his buildscripts...

i don't have either. and i don't know anyone who does?

well yeah... /me

9:28 AM
ok so, you can just poke him for the script maybe?
he noted that the person should have some idea of bzr workflows.

bzr...so not my thing

if you are okayish, ask micahg in #ubuntu-motu in irc.freenode.net

i'll give it another look

k thanks

@aking1012 - ... have you any experience with debian packaging issues?

9:33 AM
as long as it's relatively straightforward yes

... cool ... any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong here? askubuntu.com/questions/164621/…

you can't binary file can you??!
i can be terribly wrong. goes for a walk

icons should be include-able. are you using an old version of something? need to try that out. i haven't repacked much other stuff and added binary stuff. it's usually just patches or a new tar.gz

no - the original .orig.tar.bz2 file that it created was just a bunch of python text files. The upstream developer has now added an icon - that's what I'm having a problem with

yeah i get the problem. i have to look at it a bit

9:41 AM
cheers ... hate to get a tumbleweed badge on this one...

heh

you got upvotes already boo

... need to somehow encourage more devs and maintainers like your goodself here to askubuntu.

good point.
need to flash out a blog post on that ;P

@jokerdino --^ something that 2buntu would consider as an article?

9:43 AM
@fossfreedom no, i'll put it on planet ubuntu

brief aside, my proposed app showdown entry reworked as a glade gui:

looks great

@fossfreedom i'm not sure i really qualify as a dev/maintainer in the conventional sense

... anyone who can create good apps like the above is a dev/maintainer in my book!

9:51 AM
@fossfreedom Care to link to the package? Just throwing in a binary file won't usually work, even under /debian, as you've observed. IIRC it needs to be referenced in the make file somehow.

no make file - its more simple than that --- launchpad.net/~fossfreedom/+archive/playground apt-get source rhythmbox-plugin-llyrics - I need to add an icon to the package

possibly relevant...looks like you might need to commit it to the tar.gz instead:

Q: Having trouble building python deb package

narnieI have built my packages before using debhelper, but I'm running into a very frustrating problem. This is my file tree: usr/ `-- share |-- applications | `-- create-launcher.desktop `-- create-launcher |-- bin | |-- callbacks.py | |-- callbacks.pyc ...

they're talking about pycs, but the idea should hold
dpkg-source -b some-package_0.1.2+alpha is what seems to be the relevant bit
note: not tested

ok - sounds promising... I'll try that.

izx
It's basically telling you to ditch the original source tarball and build a new one from your source directory...

yes

9:59 AM
@izx ... hmmm would launchpad like that? - I thought a PPA had to do updates pointing back to the original upload.

izx
@fossfreedom AFAI can guess it wouldn't... try with debuild -S -sa perhaps?

if it gets figured out, maybe you should tell the gtkvnc guys. they still don't have an icon...
@foss i see the ppa, but which package is it you're goofing with?
/what

goofing with apt-get source rhythmbox-plugin-llyrics

kk

@izx ... not sure what the -sa is ... but no joy - same errors.

askubuntu.com/a/164748/25798 how valid is this answer??

@jokerdino worst is the one bellow

<facepalm>
i am pounding the review queue after a long time ;p
be back after dinner

11:09 AM
launchpad is so irritating... sed -i 's/debian.tar.gz/orig.tar.gz/g' <---the need for something like this is idiotic

... I'm intrigued ... what are you trying to substitute?

nevermind...it's dput being a pain. orig.tar.gz exists, but it's not sending it so initial up to ppa fails
>.>
complains about his mistakes and blames them on launchpad

... :) never blame yourself ... it always someone elses fault...

11:26 AM
fwiw -sa is key - i hope

... debuild -sa ... how does it help?
... amend the original tar file with the new icon file and then debuild -S -sa it?

i see a gnome-desktop3
bah, it was there all this time
i am still waiting for a gnome based flavour :/

@jokerdino what would you call it - Gubuntu is already taken apparently.

11:41 AM
gnome-shell remix

jrg
"PleaseAllTheWhinyPeoplebuntu"

grr :P

@jokerdino ... already taken ... and those Q's are OT

jrg
You think I'm joking?

@fossfreedom bah, use some other name :/
wait, what questions are OT?

11:43 AM
Qs about that unoffical ubuntu distro called gnome-shell remix

oh ok
if it is unofficial, it is OT.

jrg
Pay me $50/month to keep me on retainer and I'll make sure that all of them stay open. ;)

canonical should just buy the name and put some money behind those devs and then you have your official gnome-shell ubuntu

jrg
@fossfreedom they don't even need money.
it's more of a "Here's a weekend, go build it"

11:47 AM
haha, never seen foss use a :D on a single line before. :D reminds me of htorque ;p

@fossfreedom my orig.tar.gz problem not your problem
evidently this is a problem people have complained about for a while...and rather than fix it, some folks have just switched to uuencoding data to text

poof! sup

you might know.

know what...?

add binary file to a deb (like an icon) after the initial orig.tar.gz etc is generated
how?

11:52 AM
@aking1012 umm...
two things:
(1) i just woke up
(2) i havent had coffee
so you'll have to be more descriptive of what you want
is the executable part of the program's source, or a debian-only executable?
(debian/ubuntu-only)

part of source. think upstream change

sits down with a cup of coffee

here's the question:
3
Q: How do I add a binary file to my existing PPA package

fossfreedomAdding modified or new text files to my PPA package is simple enough: Step 1: apt-get source [foo-package] cd [foo-package] Step 2: add or modify new text files containing the changes Step 3 - update the changelog: dch -i Step 4 - create a patch dpkg-source --commit Step 5 - create a s...

@aking1012 with a subsequent version increase?

yes version increase is fine

11:55 AM
@aking1012 repackage the entire original source up (without a debian/ folder) and change any relevant version files, retar it up as package_the.new.version.orig.tar.gz or whatever
add back in the debian/ stuff, add a new debian/changelog entry
increasing the version
and mentioning you added a binary executable or something
then debuild -S
and upload the new version to the PPA

that was my inclination, but i hadn't quite worked it out yet. trying for a copy paste for @foss

hi all :)

@LordofTime ... wouldnt launchpad complain that its just received a different original source file

@fossfreedom not if you increment the version
new version, new source
@fossfreedom if you don't increment the version it'll explode
so you must increment the version
also, make individual debian packages for each release of ubuntu
and it'll not yell as much (it'll still enforce original version)
i.e.
"I am updating the NGINX PPA from 1.2.2 to 1.2.3. I need to get the 1.2.3 source, and work from that."
"I change the package, and the .orig.tar.gz, and upload the new package to Launchpad."
"If there are no build errors, then i'm done. If there is a build error, then I damned well better fix that error."
(then reupload with 1.2.3-2 or something)
but generally i do build testing in a staging repo

... sounds like what I need ... finish your coffee ... have a second... then throw me an answer please (copy paste massage the above) :)

12:01 PM
@fossfreedom F5 the page
i already wrote an answer
(how is it me on coffee seems to be faster than you guys)

askubuntu.com/q/165044/10698 close as not constructive...

lets see if it works...i did this and haven't gotten a complaint yet:
What I did:
mkdir testing
cd testing

Added ppa:

Download from ppa:
apt-get source rhythmbox-plugin-llyrics

Get in to package:
cd rhythmbox-plugin-llyrics-0.1/

Added a junk edit:
echo '#Junk commit' >> llyrics/ChartlyricsParser.py

Changed maintainer info:
sed -i 's/Maintainer: fossfreedom <foss.freedom@gmail.com>/Maintainer: Andrew King (No comment) <aking1012.com@gmail.com>/g' debian/control
sed -i 's/fossfreedom <foss.freedom@gmail.com>/Andrew King (No comment) <aking1012.com@gmail.com>/g' debian/changelog

... ok the only bit that I'm doing extra is the dpkg-source --commit ... is this the issue? - should I just be doing the "dpkg-source --include-binaries -b rhythmbox-plugin-llyrics-0.1" to do the builds from now on?

i suppose. it's still complaining at that point for me
seems silly though

--^ add that as an answer and I'll toss this around tonight when I get home. cheers.

12:09 PM
it's there

jrg
FYI, Jockey has been replaced in 12.10, so we'll need to start updating all our answers in about a month or two.

@jrg canonical threatened they do this - whats the new way of doing stuff?

jrg
@fossfreedom shrugs yeah, it's landed.

nm...launchpad just complained...it doesn't work

@aking1012 damn - sounded so promising.

12:13 PM
i was hopeful...
@jrg grrr. just grrr.
not @ you...at seemingly not necessary changes to things

hello people with super powers :))

@msPeachy hi ya

@fossfreedom you just confirmed it...

jrg
@aking1012 i think they are just trying to make it easier - I must admit that I haven't been happy with Jockey in the past.

@jrg seems like wasted effort to me ... its only an app you ever use once when setting up your first install.

12:20 PM
FYI: liboverlay-scrollbar is buggy in 12.10

izx
@fossfreedom: paste.ubuntu.com/1098205 (see last line -- created by debuild ;)

@jrg /me is skeptical

hey dino

heya

software center subsumes synaptic, something subsumes jockey, pretty soon there won't be any standard tools left

12:24 PM
computer janitor went away quite sometime ago
actually, there were five different tools to manage packages last time
software-center, janitor, update-manager, synaptic and what else??

@izx my half solution did that too, but LP complained about source package differences
1
A: How do I add a binary file to my existing PPA package

aking1012The current scratch-pad: LP just complained...but it's CW now and still here as a scratchpad What I did: mkdir testing cd testing Added ppa: Download from ppa: apt-get source rhythmbox-plugin-llyrics Get in to package: cd rhythmbox-plugin-llyrics-0.1/ Added a junk edit: echo '#Junk commit'...

feel free to edit away or fix things...i CW-ed it

jrg
@aking1012 And it's your right to be skeptical. ;)

jrg
/me is skeptical as well, but for other reasons
Wow, Android x86 sure has come a long way in the past two years...

yeah...it looks pretty neat
not a fan of java though

12:28 PM
another random thing: mozilla os is now available for download on desktop

insert no meme-image here

jrg
@jokerdino Ooh, linky? Since I'm playing with weird OSes right now, might as well play with Mozilla OS as well.
Nah, i'm fine. Thanks for the offer though. ;)

jrg
Sweet. I'll download that and take a look.

good luck :)

12:33 PM
this adding binary to deb difficulty is really irritating...
patch to debuild/dpkg still wouldn't fix launchpad choking

izx
Well, worst case you could always base64 the binary and convert it back in the postinst :D

uuencode is what has been noted on mailing lists
same general method though

Hello all

@AmithKK o/

Hey @aking1012

12:37 PM
quick question, what is the keyboard shortcut to show the desktop in oneiric? Super+D does not work..

@izx i think the point is that people shouldn't "have" to do that

@msPeachy ctrl-super-d
or ctrl-alt-d

6
Q: Unity Super + D shortcut doesn't work

AshfameSuper key + D shortcut doesn't work in show desktop functionality for me in Unity. I have searched and found solutions for adding a button in Unity launcher but I don't want that. I just want the keyboard shortcut to work for speed. I found that Ctrl + Alt + D do something similar but gedit wind...

@jokerdino thank you, the latter worked :))

@aking1012 so, we have a dupe here
7
Q: Cannot use Meta + D to show desktop

user27436I cannot use Meta + D to show desktop on a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10. I have used both the alpha and beta versions and it didn't work in either of those. However, I was expecting it to work in the final release. There is also no mention of any shortcut that shows the desktop.

12:40 PM
... ok - I'll tidy ... which one to be a master?

the one with the high views i.e the first one should be the master

@RolandTaylor Your FX guy here :D
2nd Female of the species who hangs out here

@jokerdino ... yours is now the higher voted answer than the accepted one :)

yay for ubuntu

@fossfreedom ouch.

12:43 PM
@AmithKK what was that?

let me upvote him a little

@msPeachy Asked if you were female
:D

@AmithKK Hint: Roland

Sorry if that was wrong
@jokerdino Actually that's true

;-)

12:44 PM
Remember @Explorer?

yes ;p

She deleted her main profile

jrg
BLARGH.

wait what?

@jokerdino Roland's sleeping
@AmithKK what do you think?

12:45 PM
yeah i know

@AmithKK you're stalking her?

@msPeachy Nah

fwiw it says you don't have to repack the upstream tarball, but says NOTHING about how to avoid it

jrg
@AmithKK yo. Gtalk.

12:46 PM
jrg says to Amith: don't ever talk about dora the ex...

@jokerdino lol
yes, @AmithKK don't

izx
@aking1012 @fossfreedom: hmm, adding a single icon to llyrics worked for me: launchpad.net/~izx/+archive/sandbox2/+sourcepub/2571693/…

</akward>

did you commit it first then change it? i can add and make a fresh repo all day

What do you guys think of this?

12:48 PM
@izx ... ok - now change one of the text files on this new package - does dpkg-source --commit work for you?

@fossfreedom Let me try that...

@Mitch we usually just edit it this stuff out and drop a polite comment.

jrg
@Mitch I just edited it out.

Thanks..

12:50 PM
there have been more phone numbers in questions popping up recently
...

jrg
I do think I'll call his phone # from a payphone though, and then say "get a real email address" - @live.com?! REALLY?!
It costs, what, $5/year for a domain + gmail forwarding? sigh

lol :P

lol

i have a @live.in email and i use it as a dumping bin
i.e. forward all spam, facebook, twitter emails
and whatever other useless stuff that i would otherwise delete

jrg
(and in case it wasn't obvious, I'm joking about calling him, serious about the live.com email...)

12:55 PM
of the two bugs I reported in Quantal, 1 got duped and 1 got confirmed.
and, WTHeck is this? askubuntu.com/a/165072/25798

unreal name? lol

Hello!

@jokerdino sledgehammer to crack this particular nut

@ObsessiveFOSS yo!
@msPeachy IDK what the answer was :/

What does that signify?

12:59 PM
@fossfreedom one of the weird "answers" i have seen in quite some time.

@jokerdino what's IDK?
