@jrg My condolences. Automated response

I left the Q a while ago.

I don't care about maas, I don't have enough machines to do it.
And I'm too lazy to spend hours hacking it in VMs.

gnome-tweak-tool has been broken because of python3 migration?

Q: Linux Mint 64-bit Kernel Panic

AliI'm trying to install Maya on the new Macbook Pro with Retina Display using a Bootcamp partition. The trouble is that I get a kernel panic similar to this one on live cd boot or usb boot. I did manage to get Maya to boot using "recovery mode". I even managed to install Maya however when I tried ...

how would you like a onidrekoj?

how does a post get this protection?

auto protection by community

1:02 PM
@msPeachy That happens if there's a lot of activity so it isn't spammed with people adding Me too! s and comments as answers.

if a post has 4 non answers deleted, it gets auto protected.
in addition, 10K+ users and mods can protect a question

@jokerdino oh okay, thank you

i just happened to know it =)

@ObsessiveFOSS thank you sir

for those of you needing some references on emoticons: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_emoticons
if you need help on abbreviations, try urbandictionary.

thank you, i prefer not to use these expressions even in sms, i always write in complete and correctly spelled statements

@msPeachy I do the same.
Obsessively.

1:29 PM
@ObsessiveFOSS I'm obsessed with punctuations and capitalization too...

@msPeachy i only use the ones that are relatively common, both abbrevs and emoticons

yeah you've often respond to me with this O_o or o.O and I always respond with a :P

btw, is it possible for Ubuntu be installed on a NTFS partition?

don't think so.

1:33 PM
rofl

@msPeachy ... yes via wubi.

@msPeachy ^^ yes
but normally you can't
I was insane enough to try that once

@fossfreedom that's inside Windows...how about on a separate partition, an NTFS partition?
@AnwarShah lol, what happened then?

@msPeachy You can't. The mount point can't be changed to /

@msPeachy ... in terms of dual booting then no is the answer.

1:34 PM
it is fixed to /windows may be

@fossfreedom okay, will take your word for it.

@TheInterrupter I thought that was closed

@AnwarShah Did you try mounting the filesystem with full support for native NTFS permissions? That might give powerful enough ownership and permissions to retain and retrieve proper "UNIX permissions" information.

I have tried it once, in installation phase.
Just noted, Your's and Mitch rep are same in the last 3 digit.

hey
1:42 PM
hello
i deleted all windows 7 which weighted 350 gb with all the files
i installed gparted
i want to add unallocated space to ubuntu
from /dev/sda2/ to /dev/sda5

@hey have you deleted all the partitions from /dev/sda2 to /dev/sda5 ?

@hey You can expand Ubuntu's partition(s) in GParted. You can't do this from the installed Ubuntu system itself, because they cannot be unmounted (plus it's not very safe to edit any of a drive's partitions from an OS running from the drive). So boot from an Ubuntu live CD/DVD or live USB flash drive and run GParted there. If you have just an ext4 partition for / and a linux-swap partition for your swap space, you'll want to expand /.
@hey If you have documents or other valuable data in your Ubuntu system, it's advisable to ensure your backups are current before doing this, as there is always some small (but significant) risk of data loss when dynamically resizing partitions, especially when doing it manually (due to possible user error).

hey
so i need to install this: ubuntu.com/download/desktop/… and run it from usb and there will be already gparted ?

@hey The Ubuntu ISO, burned to a CD or DVD or written to a USB flash drive, already has GParted installed on it, yes. You should be able to use the same CD/DVD or USB flash drive that you used to install Ubuntu.

hey
thank you, i'll try, hope it works

1:47 PM
@hey FYI. You don't need to install again
just run from live session
I have xubuntu, ubuntu and edubuntu installed. But grub showing all as "ubuntu". Is there any nice way to fix grub to show correctly, xubuntu, edubuntu and ubuntu?

hey
wow, it's slow downloading...
so, it will be straightforward in that gparted?
what will i need to click?
resize?

yes

Q: Resize partition with GParted

arianI wanted to create more space for Ubuntu on my hard disk in favor of my Windows partition. I booted the livecd and resized the NTFS partition to 100 GB. Then I wanted to resize my Ubuntu (ext4) partition to fill up the created unallocated space. A screenshot of my current disk. (With the livecd ...

hey
ok thanks

Q: Fixed search toolbar

Gevorg HindoyanWouldn't it be cool that this toolbar could be fixed for easier access for activities and votes?

hey
i am so scared... :D

1:51 PM
can you upload a screenshot to gparted window here
by pressing Alt+prtscr

hey
yes, one second

hey, how's things going?

he he..

hey
what do they mean by resizing left, right side/

Resizing left mean, the space in the left side of partition will be added

hey
1:53 PM
@EliahKagan: "to the left."
i dont get it
where's left side

@hey. I recommend not to do left
It will take more time.

hey
what's the difference?

@hey You'll usually only be able to expand on one side or the other. You can only expand into unpartitioned ("unallocated") space.

@hey The difference is, In left, gparted will allocate space in the left and also move all the data
hence, it requires more time.
but if you have power backup, you can do that

hey
strangely my usb is not recognized

1:57 PM
are you booting from usb or cd?

hey
i want to mount .iso

Are you on Live Session?

hey
i am on "simple" session
i havent done anything yet
maybe my usb is messed up, idk

owie

@hey You need to not be booted into the installed system, when you run GParted to expand the partition. So you need to boot from a system that is not installed on your hard disk. This system can be on an external drive, or a CD/DVD. So you have to burn the ISO to a CD/DVD, or write it to an external drive. Just as you did so you could install Ubuntu originally. (Though you may have done that in Windows, and if you don't still have your media, you'll have to do it again in Ubuntu.)
