"Keep Christ in Christmas" is such a stupid statement

2:38 AM
I concur. And I'm a Christian.

2:50 AM
Srsly?
You break the GitHub ToS by scraping email addresses, use them for a commercial purpose (also against ToS), send a mass email (using "to" instead of "bcc" or simply sending multiple emails), and then expect somebody to want to work for you???
Thanks, but I've got, y'know... ethics.
Beer and pizza aside.
My favorite part is the replies showing up in my inbox from people (1) taking this seriously and (2) using reply-all (even attaching their resume).
Such facepalm. Very dissapoint.
> "Dont reply to all, Im not interesting about this spam"
Thank you fellow victim.
> "Cool, I will be sending [site] a complaint about using you as their recruiter."
Also thank you, fellow victim. I agree wholeheartedly.

@NathanOsman The atheist media loves to distort Christianity, Judaism and Islam. They find the odd extreme preacher, rabbi or cleric and quotes them as saying "God says you should do this" to try to paint the masses of worshipers look silly. But by now you have heard about fake news. Just another nail in MSM coffin.

Yes, that's true. The media has gone from "let's report the facts" to "we need attention to stay in business so we'll report anything that elicits a response".

3:33 AM
That is true. There's a lot more going on at the same time.
Probably best left for Politics SE if the bozo mods there don't put everything on hold as "off-topic". Such discussions aren't well suited for AU I don't think. Besides I'm on my fourth beer and looking forward to watching a movie :D

4:22 AM
@NathanOsman Ouch. Yeah. I've even gotten a few citing how much they "love my github profile". Considering all the public repos I have are mostly just garbage (half written ideas that I mostly just used for fun and then abandoned) that's not making me inclined to pursue your offer.

4:53 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix ehhh. Calling mods bozos is not nice ._.
And sites like politics are probably really hard to moderate

5:14 AM
@NathanOsman so true :/
@JourneymanGeek yeah I bet!
@muru remaining in are three definitely valid Qs, one that I gave the benefit of the doubt, one useless unanswered question that someone upvoted (so needs one more downvote) and ~5 closed questions that I delete-voted. So if you have time & care to visit it, and cast a few delete votes and one downvote, it will be clean after one more roomba run (tomorrow iirc) and once Eric C has checked the delete votes page (almost as reliable ^_^)
I also wrote a very quick lazy wiki and usage guidance, but I don't know whether it will help... maybe we should actually destroy that tag and change it to ?
Oh oops actually there are 2 I only just got closed so have to wait a few days to delete vote, or I can do it after one more downvote

5:32 AM
@Zanna uml sounds like a markup/modelling language

Guess we better leave it as it is then?

I suppose so

Going back to sleep. Ping me if I should do anything

@Zanna You should sleep more

Q: Download Ubuntu Live CD

JohnFor pxe boot I need iso Ubuntu. The problem is when Clients requests iso from the Server and iso is Standard Desktop Image (around 1.5 GB), Clients just do not have enough RAM... Is it possible to download only Live CD Image and if it is please share the link. Thanks in advance!

6:14 AM
@jokerdino you're right, but it's not happening

there is always more moderation to bore you back to sleep

Oh, I was aiming for the start of next week

I'm just a few minutes away from performing the very first transfer with the new NitroShare for Android app.

8:07 AM
byte[] ipAddr = new byte[]{127, 0, 0, 1};
InetAddress addr = InetAddress.getByAddress(ipAddr);
How the heck can this throw an java.net.UnknownHostException?????
(1) How is this a host? (2) How could invalid input even be provided?!?
This makes no rational sense whatsoever.
And the reason this is a problem is because it causes an android.os.NetworkOnMainThreadException.

Q: How to delete merged question?

Ganesh AherI asked one question on Ask Ubuntu community. Some one flag it as duplicate and merged that question with another question. My question is : How to find group name and user name and it was merged with : What does the name after '@' at terminal prompt mean? I got -3 votes for this question. No...

By the way anyone willing to have a look at my problems with installing ubuntu? askubuntu.com/questions/758658/…

Not sure what problems you are referring to. I don't see your name anywhere in the link, and you don't mention if (and why) the accepted answer isn't working for you @Thijser :)

Whoops copy didn't take and got the wrong link askubuntu.com/questions/886629/…
(the other was something I was looking at)

Haha, I see .

11:05 AM
Hello ! :)

hello

@Thijser Hi ! :) Please try all boot parameters (one after the other) ... :)

Working on it

@Thijser Let's hope that it isn't a BIOS issue ... I saw that in other cases with Acer notebooks ... the BIOS had to be downgraded in order to install a Linux system ... :)

ok none of them worked, pci=noacpi does result in a slightly different situation where the screen goes black rather then into the ubuntu loading screen and just hangs there until I kill the system

11:15 AM
@Thijser What happens when you use nomodeset ?

With pci=noacpi ? moment!

@Thijser no - please use only ONE parameter at the same time ! :)

Just nomodeset?

@Thijser yes

same as with nouveau.modeset=0
can' t open /dev/sr0: no medium found
(see the picture that' s now in the question)

11:19 AM
@Thijser yes, I saw it - it is searching for a CD/DVD slot and doesn't recognize it ... that's why I try the workaround using a parameter which disables this.

Those are the acpi settings right?
and the nomodeset is the graphics card?

@Thijser nouveau.modeset=0 is for the GPU

OK and combinding them doesn't resolve the problem (usual outcome)

@Thijser noacpi disables the whole ACPI system. This may be useful, if the ACPI implementation might cause some problems ! :)
@Thijser noapic disables the Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller (APIC) ! :)

would it help to reattach the dvd station (now houses extra HD)?

11:27 AM
@Thijser this might be a good idea - please try it ! :)

give me a couple of minutes

@Thijser take all the time you need ! :)

btw a philips dvd+R 4.7GB dvd will work right?

@Thijser no idea ... but yes, it should be okay :)

OK almost done
System is booting
And let' s burn the image....
And that should be one burned image
can' t open /dev/sdb: no medium found
is it confusing the dvd and usb stick?
But it keeps doing stuff now, so that's positive

11:38 AM
@Thijser remove the USB and boot only from DVD

removed it before we started
but it' s now started giving a lot of OK signs
and now shows me an ubuntu login:
It' s doing stuff...
but a black screen, just leave it for a few minutes?
and we arrive at the start screen, mouse not working, gonna try external
mouse isn't working but the keyboard is and I could open a terminal

@Thijser great ! so you are on the live desktop ?

yes but without a mouse so trying to get to the install ubuntu 16.10 button without it

@Thijser great ! one of the boot parameters could solve the mouse issues ... in the meantime I updated the answer with the DVD solution ! :)

ok so try again with the noapci options?
Or connect with the internet and see if I can download something from there?

11:48 AM
VTC as unclear, or can anyone make any sense of what this guy is asking? askubuntu.com/q/887086/367990

@Thijser when you can install ubuntu, just do it and when you can boot the system, then it's fine ... if not test with parameters ... :)

@ByteCommander hmm 4.4 something is probably the kernel

@Thijser AFK for one hour now ... see you in about an hour - good luck ! :)

ok thanks
Ah mouse is working it' s just the pointer who is frozen

@Thijser yes, but toolchain, windows, ... makes no sense to me

11:59 AM
@ByteCommander My suspicious is that he is a little bit clueless but wants to run a linux system on his computer but doesn't understand that that is not something he can install on windows (well virtual machine maybe) or that the kernel and ubuntu are different things
So someone with no clue about linux at all who might be interested in running it. We should be somewhat kind and see if we can get him to better explain himself
Hmm older questions do suggest he knows how to ask questions...
Not his account?

12:26 PM
Why does my laptop have an Lithuanian keyboard layout?

@Thijser back ... and ? ubuntu successfully installed ? :)

not yet, did one install but something went wrong and it still goes for the windows booter
Gonna try properly selecting all options now (download updates during install ext.)

@Thijser disable hibernation and fast startup in Windows ! :)
@Thijser Then boot into BIOS and select ubuntu as default system ! :)
By the way @Thijser - is the answer okay (now that you could boot) and ready for acceptance or does something need to be added ? :)
@Thijser You can change this to whatever layout you want easily ... :)

12:42 PM
The answer is fine but maybe a brief explenation about the meaning of the could not open /dev/sr0: no medium found being related to the dvd station

@Thijser This is an old well-known thing and included in many old posts already ... I am very glad that we could make your machine booting ubuntu successfully - really glad ... those Acer machines sometimes are a real pain ! :)

Maybe but when I searched the error messages I didn't get anything about dvd's so it might have helped me (just want to ensure that future people have it easier)

@Thijser That's why I added to alternatively choose to use the DVD solution ... :)

Can I edit the answer and then you can see if you agree with it (adding a bit more info on the likely issue)

@Thijser write it here in chat and I will see how we can use this ! :)

12:52 PM
Alternatively If none of the boot parameter options provided in the comments below work the error init: line 7 can’ t open /dev/sr0: no medium found suggests that your system is trying to use the dvd station rather then USB so you can burn the ISO file to a DVD and boot from this media to install the Ubuntu operating system.

@Thijser I upvoted your question to bring it more up to the front when someone searches ... :)

ok thanks
hmm next challangeL grub seems not to replace the windows boot

@Thijser no ... you have efi ... both systems use their own boot loader ... it is located in the efi partition

ok, not something I have experience with as before grub just showed up when I installed ubuntu
gonna try boot repair now

@Thijser no boot into BIOS and set ubuntu as default there

1:07 PM
Somewhere in that?
Changing the order there doesn' t work

@Thijser answer updated with your information ! :)

Good thanks!

@Thijser You're welcome ! :)

But not seeing ubuntu/linux anywhere in my BIOS

@Thijser This is something you have to find out yourself ... every BIOS is different ... maybe you have to set a password in order to change things in BIOS ... on my machine this is the case :)

1:16 PM
Already entered the password

@Thijser It MUST be possible to change the boot order ... as I said : every BIOS is different ... just check and try ... :)

I changed the boot order, threw windows to the bottom of the list
(well still above netboot but ...)
(f5-f6 to change order )

@Thijser Are you sure that ubuntu is installed ? do NOT use boot-repair ... please wait, I search for a suitable answer how to reinstall GRUB correctly. :)

it does prioritise the live dvd over windows

@Thijser then eject the DVD ! :)

1:21 PM
Yes I did and it goes to windows at that point

@Thijser of course ... because it still is the default loader ... you HAVE TO switch the default loader to ubuntu ... here is how to re-install GRUB -> askubuntu.com/questions/880662/… ! (part 2 of the answer / first option - EFI) ! :)

ok back to the live dvd
I really should try to learn these things a bit more right?

@Thijser hahaha ... yes, exactly ! :D

your answer uses /dev/sdXXX but my EFI partition is /dev/nvme0n1p1 ?
how do you learn a lot of this sutff by the way? been using Ubuntu for about 4 years now but I never quite get this type of skills

@Thijser impossible ... you seem to have nothing installed so far ... Note : sdX = disk | sdXX = EFI partition | sdXXX = system partition
@Thijser I learned everything by self-education and testing things ... ! :)

1:34 PM
Let me send a picture (sorry is going to be by pgone as making screenshots without a pointer is hard)
/dev/sda(1) is a normal hard disk (not the ssd ) and contains an empty 1TB ntfs partition
I guess /dev/sdb would become the hard drive that is currently out of commission due to the live dvd
Does that make any sense?

@Thijser /dev/nvme0n1p1 is your EFI partition in this screenshot ... so replace /dev/sdXX with /dev/nvme0n1p1 ... although everything I see is completely strange : SSD is a disk just as a HDD ... and also : 166 GB used after a clean ubuntu installation ? IMPOSSIBLE ! :)

I think that' s windows, 100 GB for an almost clean windows install seems .... "reasonable"
p5 holds ubuntu

@Thijser p3 is Windows : 277 GB ! p5 is ubuntu : 166 GB ! :)

Yes and ubuntu uses 8.47 GB (in use) and windows uses 102 GB

@Thijser yes - you're right ... I mistakenly looked at the wrong column ! :) Sorry ... :)

1:46 PM
hmm it doesn't like me mounting it

@Thijser yes ... that's what I meant with strange : the partitions should be named sda1 or sdb2 or whatever ... not nvme0n1pXYZ ! :)

NVME: the new, native PCIe attachment for really blistering fast storage. The more recent Samsung and Intel NVMe drives comes to mind.
ok let's reboot maybe I did something wrong

@Thijser good idea ... :)
@Thijser In case you see the same partition table as before, I prepared the commands for you :
sudo mount /dev/nvme0n1p5 /mnt
sudo mount /dev/nvme0n1p1 /mnt/boot/efi
for i in /dev /dev/pts /proc /sys /run; do sudo mount -B $i /mnt$i; done
sudo chroot /mnt
grub-install /dev/nvme0n1
update-grub
exit

thanks
Hmm no errors
rebooting
and windows no option for ubuntu

2:02 PM
@Thijser that is a clear indication that you have to change something in the BIOS ... please re-check EVERY single setting there ... you have to change the loader to ubuntu being default ... better eject the DVD before ! :)
@Thijser good sign ... so we have ubuntu system and GRUB boot loader installed ! :)

ok boot menu in BIOS is still the same (see above)
I can't find any options for linux

@Thijser Unfortunately I have NO chance to assist you professionally with YOUR BIOS ... I have a SCHENKER XMG machine with completely different BIOS ... :(
@Thijser Please check EVERY single setting in your BIOS ... there MUST be a way ... really ! You are SOOO close ... ! :)

That' s my bios right now
looks relevant

2:18 PM
@Thijser on the first picture Secure Boot is set to standard (Enabled ???) and on the second Disabled ... hmmm :)
@Thijser yes ... might lead into the right direction :)

Yhea I cannot change that in the first picture

@Thijser Now you know what I meant when I said Acer is a pain - right ? :)

Yes

@Thijser one thing : did you disable hibernation and fast startup in Windows ? That is extremely important ! :)

Yes I did
under secure boot under security is for legacy mode
Let' s try legacy mode then

2:22 PM
@Thijser NO ! Don't do it ... it CANNOT work ! All systems are installed in EFI mode ... or didn't you choose the ubuntu entry with UEFI in front when you booted the DVD and installed ubuntu ??? This is VERY important ! :)

no?
Hmm messing with it does dislodge a lot of other settings

@Thijser please read and answer what I said and asked above ^^^^^

You mean when I did the grub install things (followed the UEFI instructions)
or while installing ubuntu (don' t think I saw anything about EFI but could be wrong)
I can now selected trusted boot options

@Thijser that ! ^^^ please re-check it ... you have to boot the DVD in EFI mode when you install ubuntu ! :)
@Thijser okay ... maybe that helps ... IDK ...

Nope setting setting ubuntu as trusted doesn't work

2:30 PM
@Thijser please boot the DVD and tell me if you see an entry ubuntu WITH UEFI in front

ah pressing f12 during boot now gives me the option to boot "yes" which is what grub is apperently now called

@Thijser if that boots ubuntu, then it is really nothing more than finding the switch in BIOS to set this permanently ! :)

Yep it boots ubuntu

@Thijser PPPUUUHHH ... GREAT ! :D
@Thijser Now find the persistant switch in BIOS yourself or ask Acer support how to set it ! :)

OK lessons learned you have to mark grub as a trusted boot option in BIOS and you can dislodge that option by toggling efi/legacy on and off while having a supervisor password
Who thought that was a good idea?

2:37 PM
@Thijser as I said several times : there MUST be a switch ! :)
@Thijser hahaha ... now you owe me something - right ? :D :D :D

ok and now it's permanent
I can give you a bounty

@Thijser yes ... finally ! :D :D :D

Hmm I cannot give you a bounty on my question yet
Shall I give it to another question (if so which one would you like?)

@Thijser If you want you can choose something which I answered and solved from my profile ... :)

oh I cannot award my bountry in the first 23 hours despite selecting that I wanted to award to an existing answer, why kind of system is that?

2:44 PM
@Thijser Guess what ? It makes me very happy that I could help you and that we've got it done after such a long time ... this is the main reason why I'm doing all this here ! :)

That' s nice :)

@Thijser no idea how it works ... where did you place it ? :)

Q: Trying to install Ubuntu results in freezing splash screen - nomodeset did not work

Madara UchihaI've been trying to install Ubuntu for some time now, as a dual boot with Windows 10 on my XMG Schenker laptop. I have an Nvidia GTX 1060 graphics card, and i7 6700 CPU. @Thijser Another useful hint : In less than two months 17.04 will be released with kernel 4.10 which lets you have a great ubuntu experience on your machine ... before you install it, format the ubuntu partition with ext4 in GParted to get a completely clean installation ! :)

ooo, one of the posts that I've ever answered just showed up on the main page

Will look into it, what does 17.04 offer?

I think we're finally getting Unity 8

Oh, right !Beta stuff is out . . . gotta get Budgie

Any ideas on my GIF images problem with eog?

Q: Fix animated GIF images which eog can't open, but Firefox and ImageMagick can

Byte CommanderI received a collection of animated GIF images from a friend, but I am unable to open some of them them with the standard image viewer eog. The error messages showing up when trying to open them include: GIF image loader cannot understand this image Circular table entry in GIF file ...

@Serg hahaha ... hello my friend ! :)

@cl-netbox Good morning

@Serg How are you doing ? Everything fine ? :)
@ByteCommander No ... an idea not, but : an upvote ! :D Good afternoon to you ! :)

Meh, thanks anyway...

2:59 PM
At least it's going ot be a well upvoted question

@cl-netbox everything's fine , at work . . . again . . .

I would appreciate a well-answered question more, but maybe one will lead to the other, hopefully

@Thijser hahaha ... yes ... but better is a properly booting and working system, just as in your case now ! :D

@ByteCommander consider running strace eog image.gif and adding paste link to your question

Anyway time to take a break now that my system is running smootly and I'm beginning to see squares when I look away

3:02 PM
@Thijser :D :D :D

Thanks again and see you guys

@Thijser You're welcome ! :) Was a pleasure to work with you ! :) See you later ... :)

@Serg thanks for the suggestion, let me try that

3:18 PM
@Serg I guess the interesting part is this:
lstat("/path/to/file.gif", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0664, st_size=1927696, ...}) = 0
open("/path/to/file.gif", O_RDONLY) = 13
fstat(13, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0664, st_size=1927696, ...}) = 0
read(13, "GIF89a/\1/\1p\0\0!\377\vNETSCAPE2.0\3\1\0\0\0"..., 65535) = 65535
close(13)                               = 0
file gets opened and immediately closed again
everything around that seems just to be general resource loading and X input event handling

Oddly enough exit statuses are a 0 it seems
mystery, huh ?

/shrug
well, firefox and imagemagick can open them
just eog acts up

@terdon now I am on kernel 4.9.11 in fedora too ! :)

O_O University wifi is hella fast, 1.6 GB already done
I'd need half the night at home

@Serg :D

3:45 PM
@jokerdino if you're around, could you clean up the comments below askubuntu.com/q/887198/367990 ? OP updated an old question of him that was put on hold, but then copied and reposted it (link). When we started to VTC as duplicate, he deleted the original question instead. That's what most of the comments are about.
(now there gathered some useful comments though, so you need to use the scalpel, not the axe...)

@ByteCommander Can we assist the mods by flagging the unwanted comments as "too chatty" so they can quickly do what you want?

Done, I think.

@jokerdino looks good, thanks
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I have bad experiences with canned comment flags.

@ByteCommander I actually don't use comment flags so it was more a "I'm wondering if..." suggestion.

3:54 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Most of them from me got declined because mods apparently are too lazy to dig deeper and look at the whole post if the comment itself does not look bad on first sight
