@Rinzwind Who Boxy is is self-evident but who is "Sushi"?
Seth?

6:24 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Hey Sir ! :) Where are your upvotes ? I can't see them ... :D :D :D

Ohai.

@NathanOsman Hi Nathan ! :)

.iahO
(greetings back)

@cl-netbox I was writing a message about that earlier. But it was too complicated as a historical message when you weren't on-line so here goes.
When I wrote that question on how to cycle grub background with each new boot automatically
I looked for six users to give credit for. Yourself, byte, zanna, terdon, etc.
I opened AU's search question window and keyed each user ID in.
Every user (except for you) came up with answers on the first screen.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I think Rinzwind just likes sushi.

6:29 PM
I had to find your user ID by clicking on your icon.
So it made me think you didn't have any answers in AU :)

WOW have I been stupid. Have been figuring all afternoon why numpy practiced totally inaccurate roundings, simply worked with incorrect input.... grrr
...freaking blind spots...

@Seth I dunno, I think he calls you "Sushi" and you're in denial about it :p

@WinEunuuchs2Unix What ??? hahaha ... I wrote many (good) answers ! :D

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I wouldn't care if he did :P

Hi @Seth ! :)

6:30 PM
hi netbox!

@cl-netbox for example... this one and that one... gimme something~!
@NathanOsman get that snapd question answered from that 25K user?

Winshi, Sethshi, cl-shi, @Rinzwind is obsessed with food

ok Jacobshi

lol

Watshi?

6:32 PM
Whoshi?...YOUshi!
3

Niceshi!

Thankshi

Starshi.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Here you can see my answers -> askubuntu.com/users/260935/cl-netbox?tab=answers&sort=votes ... but hey, I was kiddin ... remember the shoot in the foot ? :D

6:33 PM
YESSHI

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Here you can shi my answers ->

@cl-netbox +1 for installing Nvidia drivers because I still haven't succeeded since 2014 and am running Intel HD4000 only.
I noticed your rep dropped off a cliff in May-August... was it for collusion in up vote solicitation? :p

@WinEunuuchs2Unix uh uh uh, I am watching you.
correction, watshing

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Thank you very much, but use this when installing them -> askubuntu.com/questions/871978/… ! :) With this method it most probably will work for you ! :)
@Seth @WinEunuuchs2Unix @JacobVlijm : What about Jacobsmuschili ? :D :D :D

@WinEunuuchs2Unix nope, but I emailed someone from the snap team.

6:39 PM
@cl-netbox If you are doing long term support on your upvoted answer here are my specs:
$ lspci -k | grep -EA2 'VGA|3D'
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
	Subsystem: Dell 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller
	Kernel driver in use: i915

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107M [GeForce GT 650M] (rev a1)
	Subsystem: Dell GK107M [GeForce GT 650M]
	Kernel modules: nvidiafb, nouveau, nvidia_304
@cl-netbox OK I looked at your other answer now it's +2 for your 10 minutes :)
@NathanOsman REally? That's impressive. So you didn't mind me pinging you that snapd question I knew nothing about?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix thank you ... please wait a minute :)

Guys, can we please stop trading votes here? @WinEunuuchs2Unix @cl-netbox seriously, I hate it.

@JacobVlijm I upvote nVidia answers all the time because it's not working on my system. I didn't just upvote his stuff blindly.

@JacobVlijm We don't do that ! It was a joke from yesterday !

He's actually helping me work out my nvidia problem. Plus I would remind you I've upvoted lots of your stuff too @JacobVlijm that you've pointed out in chat room.

6:44 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix if you think it's good, vote silently. "thank you ... please wait a minute :)" is not really leaving much to imagination.

OK we'll cease the voting chatter. no more voteshi ;)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix If you ever think I am asking for votes here, shout at me. We shouldn't.

@JacobVlijm Stop that please ! I said that because I am checking for the correct drivers !

It's more complaints how users didn't respond or how downvotes got cast as in Pilot6's case yesterday where I upvoted him to compensate for the jerk that downvoted him.

There's no point in mentioning you voted, unless you think it is useful to show other users why an answer is great.

6:49 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Install the drivers this way :

When the login screen appears press : Ctrl+Alt+F1
Enter your user name and password, then execute :

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt update
sudo apt install nvidia-375 nvidia-prime
sudo reboot

Is 375 appropriate for my older GT650M though? I see lots of references to 367 as the stable release.

Awww Russian Ambassador to the UNSC Churkin died today :(

@JacobVlijm What you said annoyed me extremely and hurts me a lot ... I want you to know this ! You always think I am asking for votes - I am not ! I am not in such a lucky position as you are ... whenever you write something, upvotes are flying in as fast as lightning ... I address issues that are serious and for whatever reason don't get much attention and I solved many issues ! How can a user use your scripts when a system doesn't boot into a properly working desktop ? Please think about it !

@cl-netbox We all have posts of what we think would deserve the world on votes, but are untouched for days or weeks. I am no exception in that. You are one of the most friendly persons on the site, but constantly posting links to your answers, many times more than once to the same question, that is simply implicitely asking for votes. Then, when people do, and they do it openly, we get a situation that we had a while ago; mixing socializing with voting.

7:04 PM
Well I won't take such an angry tone cl but I would add I give Jacob upvotes for the beauty of his Python displays and elegant coding style but I've never used Python and therefore none of his answers I've upvoted. That might explain "fast as ligtning upvotes" but it's still deserved.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix @cl-netbox I really love you both. It's not meant as "You do wrong", and I am sure there are no negative intentions whatsoever. It is just something that easily happens. In real live, just like here.

I love this whole place and I think we are artificial-family members and as such sometimes we are given to a little squabbling here and there. It's no big deal because 99% of the time it's all good.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix totally ^

Oh, @cl-netbox good evening. Speaking about nvidia, they're giving me much trouble recently.
I had 375 from the PPA you told me installed, but it broke completely and booted into low-graphics mode.

@JacobVlijm Many others post their things here ... way more often than me ... but in my case everything seems to be judged differently ... anyway ...

7:11 PM
Then I installed 378 instead and now I am getting distortions in place of window shadows after waking from suspend.
Can you recommend me which one I should pick now?

@ByteCommander when did this happen ? which drivers worked before ?

I had 375 installed for a while, but configured to use Intel graphics in nvidia-settings.
But there was an update to these drivers recently, probably that broke it.

@ByteCommander I can recommend 375 and 378 ... both are working perfectly on my machine

Both don't here.
2 hours ago, by Byte Commander
user image
That is with 378 after waking from suspend.

@ByteCommander Did you purge the old drivers before installing the new ones and rebooted both times ?

7:13 PM
Yes.
Having a 940M btw.

@ByteCommander I know ... did 367 work ?

That's the one I'm currently installing.
Should I take the one from the PPA (higher micro version) or the one from Ubuntu's repo?
  Version table:
 *** 367.57-0ubuntu0.16.04.1+gpu16.04.1 500
        500 ppa.launchpad.net/graphics-drivers/ppa/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     367.57-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 500
        500 ftp.uni-stuttgart.de/ubuntu xenial-updates/restricted amd64 Packages
        500 ftp.uni-stuttgart.de/ubuntu xenial-security/restricted amd64 Packages
ok, then I can leave it as it is.
rebooting and praying...

@ByteCommander good luck ! :)

@cl-netbox Hey, are we cool? I like you man.

@JacobVlijm I like you very much too ! :)

7:20 PM
Askubuntu ^

:D

The one on the right must be @Zanna

@cl-netbox Thanks, seems to work so far.

@ByteCommander Really ? Great ! But it makes me wonder a bit ... :)

No distortions after suspending and no glitches in Chrome or Discord Client either.

7:24 PM
@ByteCommander Makes me happy ! :) Although I can't understand it, we have both similar hardware ... but who knows what interferes in your case ... :)

We'll probably never know, but as long as it works, I'm fine.

@ByteCommander Yes, that's most important ! :)
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Did you get the drivers installed successfully ? :)

@cl-netbox I have to go out shopping so I'm putting the project on my to-do list. I've tried this every few months without much success so it's hard to get my hopes up :(

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Which ubuntu edition are you using ?

16.04.1 I think. with Unity desktop.

7:37 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix give me the output from uname -a please

$ uname -a
Linux dell 4.9.10-040910-generic #201702141931 SMP Wed Feb 15 00:33:24 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

@WinEunuuchs2Unix aha ! custom kernel ! no wonder that it doesn't work ! ... uninstall kernel 4.9 and upgrade to the hwe stack afterwards -> sudo apt install --install-recommends xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04

Oh I have 20 kernel versions I can boot... No need to uninstall anything.
4.4.0-62 is on here if that's what you are wondering.
I do the daily updates all the time.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix choose always the canonical kernel versions ... after upgrading to hwe stack you have kernel 4.8

That's if you are under 16.04.2 I think

Q: SSH Configuration Help / Can't tunnel

BrandonI have a stock install of Ubuntu 16.04.2 with key based authentication setup and working fine. I've also installed an unmodified mysql-server 5.7.17. I cannot seem to connect to the mysql server via Sequel Pro ssh tunneling. It always returns the following: Unable to connect to host 127.0.0.1 b...

@WinEunuuchs2Unix When you are on the hwe stack you are on 16.04.2

Not sure I want to get on the hwe band-wagon though :)
There are negative consequences from what I read here recently.
here=AU Q&A

@WinEunuuchs2Unix It's your decision ... hwe provides you with better drivers support ... I have tested it ... when everything is configured properly, it works flawlessly
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Yesterday I supported a friend ... he upgraded to hwe ... runs perfectly ! :) I am running 16.10 (always use the latest stable edition) and have 16.04.2 in a VM ... no problems at all ! :)

friend=Byte Commander?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix no ... this friend is not on AU :)

7:49 PM
ahh... I was reading your convo with Byte a while ago... You see for years now I've always installed the latest Mainline kernel in Ubuntu... so hwe won't serve much purpose.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix the thing is that Canonical modifies the kernel which makes them work properly with drivers such as nvidia on ubuntu systems ... do you get what I mean ? With mainline kernels you might need to do some extra configuration to make it work with nvidia ... :)

@cl-netbox That could explain why nVidia hasn't been working since 2014.
Having mainline kernel is more important than having nVidia since I don't have a steam account, only origin account under Windows.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Yes, I'm quite sure ... I never had any problems in 10 years on different machines ! :)
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Then it's okay ... but what has the linux kernel to do with Windows ?

This could explain why Fabby and Pilot6 are against new mainline kernels as they are also nVidia experts.
@cl-netbox Under Windows nVidia works great for the most part.
just some minor screen tearing when running full screen on external monitor.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix yes I know ... so why is the mainline one an advantage for you ?

7:56 PM
I like to be on mainline to discover new bugs... I use the computer to find and solve computer bugs... not much else.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix okay - got it ... I have to go now ... see you tomorrow ... then we can continue - okay ? Thanks for the nice discussion ! :) Goodbye :)

@cl-netbox Well other than the code I write which focuses on booting for the most part. I have to run as well.... have a great day!

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Same to you ! :) Bye :)

Ahahahaha, this is hilarious. janky.solutions/#
@NathanOsman --^

8:20 PM
ROT26, lol.

1 hour later…
9:30 PM
It was so close.

@JacobVlijm <3

Hah :)

surely this is a pretty useless question askubuntu.com/questions/543286/…

9:55 PM
^^^ VTC's as unclear, but also posted comment. @Zanna

17.04 goes with gnome stack. i have bad feelings about this

Have you tried 17.04 yet? I did last month and was shocked to see screen tearing just moving a window on the desktop.
BTW what's wrong with Gnome Stack, IYO.

10:26 PM
Well, first of all, Gnome has a reputation for "dumbing down" their interfaces.
They used to have a great product and then they started removing features.
Like... features I actually used to use.
For example, tab titles in gnome-terminal.
And the final straw for me was removing the volume step setting in gnome-settings.
I ended up patching things myself to restore the original functionality.
There is no valid reason to remove features people are using "to make things simpler".
It's Apple 2.0 all over again.
</rant>

@WinEunuuchs2Unix many thanks :)
this is the third kernel update that has failed to fix my typing-any-key-causes-the-system-to-instantly-shutdown bug :(

@Zanna I got a baking pan to fit my oven and some Hummus BTW. And will start sweet potato chip project soon. I"ll upload some pics later :)
can you explain that shutdown bug?... also post your hardware details :D

haha my hardware is a basketcase and what happens is I get to the login screen where I need to enter my password, but as soon as I press any key the system gracefully shuts down
it's my own fault, haven't reported it
<--guilty

10:46 PM
Just looked up what Hummus actually is...
because in German "Humus" with 1 m is a type of soil, which confused me

same in English

@Zanna I would reinstall ubuntu-desktop which hopefully resinstalls lightdm / unity-greeter.

it's the kernel
I boot an old kernel and it's fine
nothing wrong with lightdm
I don't use Unity btw

Gotcha. I'm using 4.9.10 with no problem.

fancy
I'm thinking I'll just install 17.04

10:53 PM
That will give you 4.9.x as well.
When I installed 17.04 though it came with horrible screen tearing just moving a windows on the desktop.

but I should do the right thing, report the bug, install the mainline kernel when the devs ask my to so they can bisect etc etc
I tried it out last week in live mode, ran sweet

I was using live mode too... I have a hunch it went with nVidia GPU instead of the Intel GPU but didn't check it out.

no fancy graphics in my toaster :)

My toaster has LED count-down timer... Sometimes I like it better than my laptop when it's misbehaving :p

A better question than your question I think, would be, "why aren't all the commands I've used in my history"
because it pisses me off too

10:56 PM
I just assumed I was doing something wrong.

that running multiple shells simultaneously somehow causes commands not to be saved
in history
no
if ctrl+R doesn't find it, it's just not there

Yes I run multiple terminal windows all the time and up arrow gives different results.

me too

We should report the bug... .but we are lazy :p

I'm sure it has been reported

10:57 PM
That is one way of justifying laziness :D
Someone has probably reported your toaster basketcase lightdm password crash too... you don't need to report that one... I'm sure I read it this morning on launchpad bugs...haha
Anyway I like your answer here in chat about bash history, will you post an answer in mainroom and maybe generate some chatter on the issue?

hmm?

maybe it has something to do with file locks on .bash_history and terminal isn't handling it properly for multiple processes?

interesting theory

11:13 PM
You can test it by opening two windows and see if only the first opened window updates history or only the second does, etc.

I think you have to reboot though
oh no you can just open a new shell...
I seem to be in a super grumpy mood this evening!

Did the pancakes not work out this morning?
Perhaps it was Jacob nagging you over close votes last night?

the pancakes were amazing! I added cocoa - chocolate banana pancakes

He lost it with me upvoting cl-netbox today too... he's kind of grumpy too :)

nobody nagged me that I remember

11:17 PM
Funny I have chocolate-banana juice in my fridge.
Maybe you are grumpy because you are worried in the back of your mind of your impending move to the country-side.

Jacob asked me very nicely to slow down editing old posts, which was very helpful of him as I had zoned out completely and was doing it mechanically
I think I am grumpy with the veg.se beta site because nobody is there

Programmers are more jolt cola and pizza I think... less veg I think.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix yum :)

Nathan was sad an hour ago because Area51 beta on SE got closed down... you can cry on his shoulder :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix haha I would say pizza has veg, but since tomatoes, peppers and mushrooms are not vegetables, I guess it's relatively rare
@WinEunuuchs2Unix which proposal/beta got closed?

11:20 PM
I think we can safely lump fruits and vegetables all into the same pie.
@Zanna Area 51

Area 51 isn't beta

Nathan Osman
14:30
Noooo...
It was so close.

Area 51 is where the proposals are nurtured and developed

Oh it was drones... sorry my bad :(

it's OK
Area 51 is a bit confusing :)

11:23 PM
It's one of the many substitute religions as the mainstream media takes people further away from God they need something to attract the imagination of a better future.
Assuming aliens that don't exist are good and here to help humanity that is.

I am having an issue with a migrated phpbb forum. It was working fine on my old dedicated server, but, after transferring to a new one nginx gives me 504 gateway timed out. I tar.gz'd the php files and used phpmyadmin to export the database. I then untar'd the php files and used phpmyadmin to restore the database on the new server before seting the domain to the current server. The only difference between the current setup and the old one is the exact SSL (1/2)
setup (I regenerated my Lets Encrypt keys) and the exact path in the filesystem of the php files. (2/2)
Does anyone have any advice?
I am running php5.6-fpm with nginx as described here (askubuntu.com/questions/756181/…) with php7.0-fpm also installed for phpmyadmin.

Sorry never used php myself except the odd time as a user on some websites.

The strange thing is that other php files work perfectly.... just the phpbb (phpbb.com) files fail.
Perhaps there is someone here to tag about this? I don't come on this chat too often.

Ask Ubuntu may not be the best branch to ask your question though. I don't see many people here talking about php.

I'm also asking on the phpbb IRC
Is there another place you can recommend to ask?
I doubt many people on StackOverflow would be familiar with phpbb specifically, and, this seems to be an issue with phpbb since only its php files time out.

11:37 PM
Does Stack Exchange have a website branch? That seems like the logical place to start.
I don't even know what php stands for.

"(personal home page) hypertext preprocessor"

Well now I do:
Originally created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1994, the PHP reference implementation is now produced by The PHP Development Team. PHP originally stood for Personal Home Page, but it now stands for the recursive acronym PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor.

Also, it does have a website branch I forgot about. Well, off to there.

Great... I'll be there soon as I'm starting a website soon on the old laptop :)

I can recommend DigitalOcean's Linux tutorials for that then
Also, for the love of not being DDoss'd, put it behind cloudflare.
(just some advice, assuming you are knew to web hosting)
Well, webmasters stack exchange says "The last message was posted 7 days ago."
That isn't reassuring.

11:39 PM
I was just going to install LAMP from Ubuntu and take it from there... no secure information ... I keep that in my brain :)

I recommend LEMP instead
nginx is easier to configure
generally
(unless you are me with phpbb right now)
nginx is also much more efficient

But I use Apache's LibreOffice and thought that would give an edge?

good evening!

Hi @IanC hows the cuts and faceplants from surfing in Brazil today?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix no surfing today, ocean is a bit flat :/

11:42 PM
waves at ocean...HEY WAKE UP FOR IANC!

the cuts are a bit annoying, since I need to make force with my hands on work, but it's all good, and I'm still happy all my teeth are fine :D

What kind of work do you do again?

I work in the mooring crew at the docks
mooring ships

I'll call you next time I need to tie a knot :p

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I won't be of much help I guess, I only know maybe two knots hahaha
because the big ships uses cables with "laces"

11:45 PM
I like walking down the docks and peers and admiring the many different ships and yahts, you are lucky

@WinEunuuchs2Unix me too :)

hi @IanC :)
wow cool pic ^_^
I used to work at sea :)

ditto ^^^

hey @Zanna, all good today?

11:46 PM
What capacity guys?

@IanC excellent thanks :)

@Zanna I think you mentioned it, on cruising ships?

@Zanna I lived on the sea in grade 3 for 3 months as we were building the house on the deserted island.

I'm probably going to go to sea in a few years myself. Always been something I wanted to do.

@Seth I was a photographer on a cruise ship

11:47 PM
Ah.

not nice at all!

double ah

but I liked being at sea

@Seth what will you do if you go to sea?

11:47 PM
What was wrong with being a photographer if you don't mind me asking?

hmm it was actually more the whole environment

oh, and it's not me in the picture by the way! I don't even know if any aircraft carrier ever moored around here

@Zanna deck work. If I decide to make a career out of it, work my way up to an officer. But I might decide it's just a fun hobby and volunteer on one of the many historical ships we have on the west coast here.

Just tell the sailors it maritime law they can't engage with females on the ship.
^^^ @Zanna not @Seth :D

I don't like cruises, and I don't like doing hard sells, and I don't like having a boss, especially not one who can find me 24/7
@WinEunuuchs2Unix hmmm no issues with the other crew, they were solid

11:49 PM
When you are a consultant your clients can find you 24/7 too though :)

@Zanna I've always hated the idea of cruise ships. Not sure what started it, but I really hate them.
Never even been on one heh. But I find the whole idea repulsive for some reason.

yeah I hate them too
hated them before, and more afterwards

Never been on one either.

I guess it makes us three @Seth @Zanna

it's a fake world of expensive fakeness
6

11:50 PM
Perhaps cruise ship makes you floating prisoner which is contrary to freedom of internet warriors like most of you?

@Zanna aha! I think you might have just put it to words!

@WinEunuuchs2Unix you can just turn your phone off if you have to. When you live in a ship, there's nowhere to hide!

star her @Seth

@Seth lol

Yup, fakeness pretty much sums it up.

11:51 PM
@Zanna young lady isn't it your bedtime? har-ummpf

I don't like things that tries to reach people on their ostentation desires

@WinEunuuchs2Unix yeah and omg I better try to use up some CVs

ostentation? why are you making me use google? :p

@Zacharee1 is gonna kill me for filling up the queue with crap

hue

11:52 PM
Wow.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix it's a common word in portuguese haha

That was a fasty reply.

Define ostentatious: displaying wealth, knowledge, etc., in a way that is ... of display is still very apparent in the English word as it is currently used. ... are seen as spending money in a way that makes it clear that they have a lot of it. ... Please tell us where you read or heard it (including the quote, if possible). ... Words at Play.

@Zacharee1 Hue to you too.

a very hue day

11:53 PM
I'm tempted to read lines from the Grinch now as "All the Hues down in Hueville..."
3

The Who sings: Hue are hue? hue, hue, hue, HUE?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix "an unnecessary display of wealth", guess it's an accurate description of the word

Knock, knock... Hue's there?

@IanC Could we say that about hot girls? unnecessary display of beauty?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix YES! That's perfect.

11:55 PM
@NathanOsman Hue cares Hue's there? Just Huepen the door

There we go :P

@NathanOsman A suspension for Zach :P

Lol.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix guess when it comes to caring too much about your looks, vanity is more appropriate

@Zacharee1

11:56 PM
no

@NathanOsman Your raspberry pi waiting for new christmas light show software.

leave me alone I'm busy Smaling

Hue.

u0ca0_u0ca0
because windows doesn't do unicode input.

11:57 PM
Windows uses UTF-16 internally.

wat

Well, it does.

Still limited to 48 bit address space though like Linux right?

wonder if this is gonna work...
LG calls the carrier modifications "Model Features"

@WinEunuuchs2Unix User-mode address space is 8 TB.

11:59 PM
@Zanna did any of those cruiser ships you worked on had stops on south america?
