Kind of feel sorry for this guy askubuntu.com/q/806742/295286
He has no idea about microcontrollers or Raspberries and Beagles
speaking of this , i should try something . . .

accomplished overflowing a long
just realized the size is different than what I find online, because I'm running 64bit
a long is 8 bytes in this arch, instead of 4 bytes as its usually stated

Q: Bash collation strength (capital chars vs small)

tomasI have a script which reads input and counts the char occurrence. It's based on an array: parse_stream () { while read -n 1 char; do if [[ -n $char ]]; then ((count++)) ((chars[\\$char]++)) fi done } It prints a simple report reading the array: ...

@ByteCommander is it OK if I put away the log brightness indicator for a few days ? I need to figure out other things first
Also , \ o/ WOOO, 27k

12:30 AM
Sure, no problem :)

12:45 AM
I've installed GRUB on MBR so Chameleon would recognize it (hackintosh) but all it does when I boot from Linux is put me into grub>. I've done this before and it worked, but since then I played around with Chameleon and it's not fully working
Not sure if this is on-topic for this chatroom

We’re prepping the upgrade of our SQL Server 2016 primaries to CU1, the AG replicas are already updated.

Hrm.
RAM is installed but does not show up in Ubuntu...

lol
you'll have to be one of those people who ask HALP MAH RAM NO SHO

Time to play with the BIOS I guess.

MAINTENANCE NOOOO

1:01 AM
@Zacharee1 happened to me . I have this old desktop. No matter what i do, it won't recognize over 1 Gb RAM. Pity, but cant do anyth

no reload AU
oh it's back
that was fast

Weird. The BIOS can see the new stick.

do you have 32-bit Ubuntu for some godforsaken reason?

Heads up: taking Stack Overflow offline in 6 minutes for a very brief outage in order to failover quickly to our replica database servers.
Taking Stack Overflow offline now, we’ll be right back!
And we’re back - that should be the only outage tonight.

@ByteCommander how about this one
import math
import subprocess
import time

#percentages = [ int(100*math.log(x,10)) for x in range(1,11) ]
percentages = [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 14, 18, 22, 28, 35, 44, 55, 69, 86,100]

for pc in percentages :
    cmd = "qdbus org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Power /org/gnome/SettingsDaemon/Power org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Power.Screen.SetPercentage " + str(pc)
    print cmd
    subprocess.call(cmd.split())
    time.sleep(1)
how does this look to you ?
Does it transition smoothly ?
It does look quite good to me
The first percentages formula transitions much more abruptly at lower levels
at higher levels i don't notice that much difference
Second percentage values go a lot smoother

1:16 AM
@Serg Approve or Reject this please. :)

@HenryWHHackv2.0 you don't have to ask (and you really shouldn't ask) people to review your edits. There are so few suggested edits that we jump at them anyway

Ok well have a nice day/night everyone. :)

@HenryWHHackv2.0 approved

Just posted > 8kb of an answer...

lol

1:18 AM
quite the trump wall of text

8k chars?

@HenryWHHackv2.0 also i don't mind if you ask for reviewing personally, but it's not a common practice. But you can always ask me if you want :)

@Zacharee1 8653 bytes in 1444 words.
Now I'm tired.

you wrote a college essay @ByteCommander
link?

Maybe that's also caused by the fact that it's far past 3AM now here

Q: Ubuntu OS Encryption

user116447I want to use Ubuntu but I am afraid about the encryption. We all know about prism the surveillance program used by the NSA and regular hackers and i would like to know if the OS encryption is good and safe that my files can be protected. I would also like to know if their are security software ...

Probably I just really overdid it again.

1:23 AM
@Zacharee1 no, and memtest only uses 8 GB as well instead of the full 16.
Time to consult the manual for my motherboard.

hmm

I can't believe that those two who voted on my answer already have even read half of it...

i did read the whole thing

@ByteCommander I can only think that a 1444 word answer is good

1:27 AM
You're blazing fast @edwinksl then

it doesn't take that long, most of it is familiar to a lot of us here in chat

but what I've read so far is pretty good

basically "you stupid, you get pwned, you smart, you safe"

Well, I'm horribly tired now. Good night.

\o

I like how we always turn off Windows auto updates, but we want Ubuntu to auto update

^
exactly
i don't fully understand that

Yeah, that's because Win wants to force us, but Ubuntu offers it as a service.

Because Windows updates are forceful and intrusive . . . . ubuntu updates are voluntary

@ByteCommander rm -rf / is very funny though
:p

On Ubuntu if you don't wanna update - fine. But on Windows , it will do like 10 second warning and shutdown

1:29 AM
I still disable Ubuntu updates anyway and run apt-get manually every day.
Makes me feel like a power user.

@Serg @ByteCommander it's just an observation into how we think

@Serg has windows not fixed that yet? that has always been obnoxious. it is like my computer is actively working against my will

@Zacharee1 I think Ubuntu users think a little bit more than Windows users, but maybe my thinking is unthinkably simplistic

@Serg you did that on purpose

Well, I'm so tireed that I'll forget to sleep if I don't leave immediately.
shutdown now

1:31 AM
sleep well, mr. Wolf

@edwinksl Windows 10 Home forces auto updates and you can't disable them

eww

Q: Dual-Boot Nightmare: Windows 10 with Ubuntu 16.04 in Samsung-NP550 laptop

user182993My win-10 OS got infected with malware, even after scanning the malware still was there and affected functionality of my OS. So I decided to take data backup and do clean install. Earlier I had Win-10 with Ubuntu-15.10. So I wanted to dual boot win-10 with, latest Ubuntu-16.04. So I used rufus w...

speak of the devil

lol

1:32 AM
Stack Overflow and the rest of Stack Exchange network are all on SQL 2016 CU1. CPU is looking way better.

@ByteCommander just FYI, the US govt has full access to Skype messages
@StackExchange yay!
@Serg so are you willing to try making that script or should I just rename?

@Zacharee1 i'll try making it , don't mind waiting a couple day ?

that's fine
I just did an update rollout today
so there shouldn't be too many by then :p

1:48 AM
Aha!
Fixed it.
Turns out one of the clamps had sprung loose.

tsk tsk
What is with the 16.04 upgrade? Everyone either has the computer shut down during it or has a broken system afterward

Found another picture I wanna enter for the Ubuntu wallpaper contest, even better than the last IMO. cc @NathanOsman @Seth @Mateo

Oh?
I'd love to see it.

wait there's another one of those?

@NathanOsman same @RPiAwesomeness
grr, LG y u have bad customer service :(

1:51 AM
BTW - 16 GB of RAM is awesome.

It is. Tho its overkill for me

Well...if the bothersome thing would upload I would show it >.>

@NathanOsman IKR?! :D

@JourneymanGeek 4K video editing will change that :D

@NathanOsman I would LOVE 16. 8 is okay, but 16 would be ballin.

1:51 AM
@RPiAwesomeness upload it to flickr or something. imgur won't handle full res :D

@Seth @NathanOsman my server has 24GB and I still need more :p

@NathanOsman or VMs

@RPiAwesomeness It only cost me $35.

@Zacharee1 node much? :P

@JourneymanGeek That too.

1:52 AM
@NathanOsman wat

And Chrome.

amusingly my two VM hosts are lesser systems

yes actually :p

I run FF

Chrome itself is reason enough for more RAM.

1:52 AM
nodejs
@NathanOsman true that

Oh blech. I have to set up a Yahoo account.

For Flickr?

It's been owned by Yahoo since at least 2008.

Where and when is this wallpaper contest?

1:53 AM
Yahoo is awful, but Flickr is worth it.

because I actually have images for it now

@RPiAwesomeness Google+ would work too

Chrome and Chromium are just . . .disappointing when it comes to RAM . . .

@Zacharee1 Normally it's a few months/weeks before the release

@Serg there is reason behind the madness

1:54 AM
Not sure if it's still going

firefox doesn't make me happy either

@RPiAwesomeness so why are we talking about it?

every time i open htop it's like shiz ton of firefox threads

@Zacharee1 I'm not sure if it's going or not, it could still be
Either way, I like the pic

:p

1:55 AM
WHY THE HECK DO I HAVE TO GIVE YOU MY MOBILE PHONE NUMBER YAHOO.

lol

@RPiAwesomeness because they hate you.

are you just trying to share the image right now?

@RPiAwesomeness 2 FACTOR BECAUSE WHY NOT.

@NathanOsman There are some people I would not trust with my phone number.
Like FB.

1:56 AM
Yeah, I totally get that.
I was being sarcastic :D

@RPiAwesomeness sounds fun

Ugh. I want to use my real name for Flickr so I can credit my pics, but at the same time that merges my online identity with my IRL one :(

2 mins ago, by Zacharee1
are you just trying to share the image right now?

@Zacharee1 Yes

use Imgur

1:58 AM

stack.imgur has a limit
normal doesn't

not bad

got wood?

I'd like to see more log

@Mateo xD
@RPiAwesomeness do you happen to have a RAW file?
I guess that's what Flickr would be for
