7:00 PM
@Zacharee1 rephrase your question in English - unclear question is unclear

are they readonly

("archive PPAs"?)

like the ones for EOL releases
aren't they moved?

you mean old-releases?

PPAs or the main archives?

7:00 PM
yeah oldreleases is readonly
but that's not a PPA

Packages stay in PPAs for old releases, if that's what you're asking.

But obviously it won't accept new builds for EOL releases.

I thought the default PPAs got moved

Define "Default PPAs"
PPAs aren't the repositories
the repositories get moved to oldreleases as a 'snapshot' of the last version of it
there is no such thing as "default ppas"

7:03 PM
the ones that come preinstalled with Ubuntu
there are repositories like that

but those aren't PPAs
A Personal Package Archive (PPA) is a special software repository for uploading source packages to be built and published as an APT repository by Launchpad. While the term is used exclusively within Ubuntu, Launchpad host Canonical envisions adoption beyond the Ubuntu community. == See also == GNU Privacy Guard Package manager == External links == PPAs for Ubuntu Packaging/PPA Add a Launchpad PPA repository to Ubuntu == References... ==

ah

@Zacharee1 the 'default' that comes available to all images is the Ubuntu Repositories
PPAs are extra, third party repositories hosted on Launchpad, and are not managed by Ubuntu

terminology is what got me
but the default repos are moved to an archive server aren't they?

but yes, on old-releases.ubuntu.com

7:07 PM
I thought there was an archive.ubuntu.com or something

@Zacharee1 for supported releases, yes, archive.ubuntu.com points to a subset of the mirrors

oh

@Zacharee1 EOL releases eventually move from the standard archive servers/mirrors to old-releases, and are then read-only

hmm

Q: How to install software or upgrade from an old unsupported release?

made_in_indiaRecently I have installed an older version of Ubuntu on my old machine. When ever I am trying to install any software it is giving error sudo -i apt-get install vlc The error being flagged is under below. Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading st...

@ParanoidPanda hello!

Regarding old releases: mind that for PHONES 15.04 is still ON TOPIC
Pandy! \o

@ParanoidPanda you look like some weird perplexed alien

looks @Zacharee1 ?
he is!

user136984
I am? :D

7:09 PM

user136984
Ah...

7:16 PM
lol

has random images lying around on his hard drive

seems so
@Rinzwind now watch Adam Sandler

@Zacharee1 no thanks. I refuse to watch ANY movie with him in it.
heck even Seagal has a few good movies. AS has ZERO.
I am so not into american "comedy"

@HenryWHHackv2.0 lol? No, I am not...
I'm not evil here.
I am VIOLENTLY EVIL against bugs in the software I keep an eye on and work on though

7:19 PM
@HenryWHHackv2.0 that would be seth >:-)
closes it but does not even say HI in chat :=D

you should ping him. Then he'll say hello.

no he would kick me for pinging him saying hi :=)
he's evil remember

yikes

Some people say I am evil. Others say I am as kind as a kitten.

@Rinzwind if you ping him with something to close, he'll do it without responding
@ThomasWard lol right

7:22 PM
and some people say I am the destroyer of worlds.
but those people usually are baddies on IRC who would get banned anyways.

Anyone know anything about converting an ArrayList into a String in Java? It doesn't like casting... Well, the IDE says that casting is fine, but the compiler throws an error...

user136984
Saying that it can't cast an ArrayList to a String.

@ParanoidPanda sure
join them :=)
var h ='';
var i = [];
h = i.join();
I think it was something like that
you get a comma sep. string

user136984
Ok, thanks! :)

user136984
I will have another go then...

user136984
7:25 PM
Do you know anything about the special Java class for storing preferences? Because maybe that would be better for this than an ArrayList...

wait arrayList?

can't you just iterate over the list items and concatenate them to a string? not pretty, but I imagine it would work.

:P
@Seth yes you can. slow though :D

true

@ParanoidPanda I read javaSCRIPT for some reason
String[] a = b.toArray(new String[b.size()]);
is JAVA

user136984
7:28 PM
Unless there is a way of going through an ArrayList and checking for certain values without putting it into a String? Because I currently have a 2D one which is like a table (rows with columns in them) and I basically just need to go through each column and check what is in it... I also need to do certain things when I find certain characters, but I can't seem to treat each character as an individual character, it's forcing me to treat the whole lot as just a section.

I hate Java. But not as much as a hate PHP :=)

user136984
Who here has Ubuntu Membership and can edit the Ubuntu Wiki site?

raises hand

user136984
@Seth: Well, this page needs updating with the 16.04.1 release.

can i use windows server to run php code

user136984
7:34 PM
@Sandro: And what has that got to do with Ubuntu?

:3130646 you cant use windows server on ubuntu

@ParanoidPanda go ahead and make the edit to the raw text and email it to me

i had terrible time with ubuntu

SEE @ParanoidPanda told you! evil! EVIL I say!

user136984
@Sandro: Then go to SuperUser, not AskUbuntu.

7:35 PM
Super user for what

user136984
@Seth: Ok, guess I could do that... Just give me a moment then...

@Sandro well not everone is suited for Ubuntu.
@Sandro for windows relates questions? you can ask about windows there

Aha thanks

user136984
@Sandro: This place is about Ubuntu, if you want to ask non-Ubuntu related questions then please go to Super User instead (more for Windows questions).

i only have problem with mysql
i don't know it is installed
not installed

7:37 PM
@ParanoidPanda it would be fun if the morning mods show up and this chat is FULL with Windows chats >:-)

what happend
i do sudo mysql service start
i get ton of help text

where to start askubuntu.com/questions/803265/… @seth :D

@Rinzwind with that

@Seth close voting? D:
do you prefer one? :D

I don't care :p

7:40 PM
ok >:-D

user136984
7:59 PM
@Seth: Ok, I think I've fixed the wiki page. What's your email?

sethj@ubuntu.com

user136984
Got it!

I would upload the raw text to the ubuntu pastebin and just email the link
email itself doesn't work the best for raw text w/ code.

user136984
Can't I just attach the text file I've got it in?

oh that works too

user136984
8:04 PM
@Seth: Ok, sent! :)

thanks
Everything went downhill when Lenovo bought them :(

user136984
@Seth: Do you also have the ability to delete pages on the wiki?

yeah

user136984
@Seth: I have a personal page up there with some personal info, and more in the edit history for instance... As I no longer have edit access there I would prefer for the page to be removed. If I email you the link could you do it?

yeah

8:18 PM
As #Windows10 free upgrade is about to end, I re-introduce Bill to you. #Linux https://t.co/uOkekHigzO

@ParanoidPanda there is a process to get edit access though. It should be pretty easy if you have any number of previous wiki contributions to show.

user136984
@Seth: I've requested to join the Ubuntu Wiki Editors on LaunchPad, is that all there is to it?

user136984
Maybe I'll wait then until they accept me before I deal with my page...

@ParanoidPanda yeah, but it's easier if you talk to an admin and/or have someone vouch for you. They have spam problems and I suspect, with the level you go to not show anything about your real self, they might not approve you.
oh ok, your LP profile looks fine.

user136984
@Seth: So do you think that I already have a good chance of being approved and should just wait? Or still try and contact them?

8:26 PM
I think you have a good chance.
how long have you been waiting?

user136984
I only just pressed the button to join! :D

user136984
Like 5 minutes ago...

user136984
I should expect it to take no more than a few days, or a week maybe. If it takes longer then I will contact one of their admins.

user136984
Oh dear, I suddenly just got really really hungry...

user136984
Looks for food... Finds food... Starts eating! ;D

user136984
8:33 PM
And eating...

user136984
And eating...

user136984
And apparently I just found a way round the thing which prevents two of the same message in a row! :D

hilarious
in germany they debate again about killer-games

anyone know of a good gui diff viewer that I can just paste text into?
I was using Meld Diff Viewer but it requires the text to be in files..

8:49 PM
Only a workaround solution @Seth, use a gist paste the first text, then edit and paste the second text.

@Videonauth that's actually quite clever

This way you even kann have multiple revisions saved and you can diff them on the revisions tab
and if you dont really want them to be public you can delete the gis afterwards

10:07 PM
@NathanOsman nice

10:25 PM
> "There were 6270 failed login attempts since the last successful login."
O_o
That was a rather frightening statistic, CentOS.

user136984
@Nathan: I hope that the last successful login was by you (or whoever owns the system)...

Password logins are disabled on this machine.

user136984
Anyway, I think I'm going to use the Properties class instead of an ArrayList or String Array...

user136984
@Nathan: Ah, that's good. So how exactly do you login?

With an RSA key.

user136984
10:30 PM
Ah... And is the machine remote or has someone been breaking into your house (I'm going to hope these are at least remotely attempted logins)?

This is a CentOS server in a datacenter, so no - not my house :D

user136984
Oh! Well that's a relief! :D

user136984
Unless you've recently turned your house into a datacentre that is... ;P

Nope. Definitely not.
Too noisy.

not to mention the heat generated

10:34 PM
@edwinksl he's in Canada though. It's cold up there :p

pretty sure it is hot as hell in summer though :P

@NathanOsman go to getfreemoneys.notasc.am

@Zacharee1 ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED

darn
stupid govt taking down these totally not scam sites

user136984
10:41 PM
Anyone have any experience settings values in the java.util.Properties class?

user136984
Well, if anyone does know anything then please ping me, but it's getting late here so I'm off to bed now.

user136984
Goodnight! :)

haven't used java in a while :(
night
@Zacharee1 can't even find it in wayback machine web.archive.org/web*/getfreemoneys.notasc.am
such a scam

@edwinksl I completely made that address up lol

i know, but i was half suspecting someone may have used it
world is big and full of idiots :D

11:10 PM
found a duck hunt engine that is MIT license - going to change the assets and make it "Tux Hunt" ;p
should I make the dog the GNU mascot? or any other suggestions?

Does anyone know where CentOS stores root certificates?
I thought it was /etc/ssl/certs but apparently it isn't.

@NathanOsman CentOS 7 or 6?
/me can spin up a VM and find out :P

mmkay. @NathanOsman /etc/pki/... somewhere maybe?

Wait.
It might be CentOS 7.
Lemme double check.
CentOS 7.2.
Sorry about that.

11:23 PM
not a problem, still check the path i said
looks to see if he has a CentOS 7 VM here

[root@master ~]# ls /etc/pki/ca-trust/source/anchors
[root@master ~]#
Seems to be empty.

bleh i lost mine :/

[root@master ~]# tree /etc/pki/
/etc/pki/

Here's the deal - I need to bind mount the directory that contains the root certificates into a Docker container that uses them for accessing some data over HTTPS.

oh
that's not going to be easy heh
gah, stupid internet
I can't get the ISOs to set up new VMs :/
and i can't find my existing ones

I know the host has the right certificates somewhere because I can curl https://whatever.com without issues.
But the container doesn't ship with any certificates.

11:26 PM
@NathanOsman you could always ask on Unix and Linux...

I might have to if I can't get this working myself.
(Why can't we standardize on a location for these things? :P)
Hmm...
/etc/ssl/certs is just a symlink to ../pki/tls/certs...

@NathanOsman that's the question of the century

this is obligatory...

there you go.
@NathanOsman you need to review XKCD's law of standards. :P
