5:02 PM
Hello :)

kos
@ParanoidPanda Well, Chuck Norris can draw four-dimensional objects. ;)
Hi @cl-netbox!

@kos Hi my friend ! :) everything alright ? :)

kos
@cl-netbox Yup. :) How about you?

user136984
@kos: People often think that a Tesseract is the 4D version of a 3D cube, but in fact it is its shadow.

user136984
Have you seen one of those?

5:07 PM
@kos I am fine ... solved some users' problems ... :)

kos
:)
@ParanoidPanda Now I did, and it kinda makes me sick:

user136984
@kos: Those versions of it are interesting, but I don't think that there's any actual reason why some people make them look like they're moving like that. A Tessellate is just a cube within a cube. It's a 4D hypercube made of 3D cubes.

user136984
Well, it's the shadow of that anyway.

user136984
I think that it moving like that comes from the confusion people have with thinking that 4D equals time when in fact it does not and they guy who people say said it does actually didn't mean it like that...

user136984
Famous guy actually, what was his name again?

user136984
5:16 PM
Well, it's not Newton, so it must be the other guy, oh dear, how could I forget the name?! :D

user136984
Einstein! That's it! Phew! :D

kos
@ParanoidPanda Maybe to outline that it looks different from different angles? I mean you wouldn't expect a 3D cube to "change shape" like that when rotating.

user136984
Maybe, but I don't think so...

the 2d reprensation of a cube changes shape when rotating

user136984
I guess so, so maybe they are showing what it might become as the shadow when the 4D hypercube is rotated.

user136984
5:19 PM
But I don't know, I'd have to think about it some more.

so a 3d representation of a 4d object when rotated, might do something like that

kos
^^ makes sense. It's funny that I can't look at that thing without thinking it's "eating itself" (or something like that) instead of rotating.

<--- brain hurts now. :P
Too much to compute in the morning.

kos
@Mateo That I can't even grasp!

5:27 PM
@Terrance Brain hurts ? What have you done ? What happened ? Hello my friend ! :)

kos

@cl-netbox Hello! =) Too much cube spinning/stretching/rotating here for my brain to comprehend. :P

@Terrance Yes indeed - I can completely understand you - in my case it hurts my eyes more than my brain ! :)

And, I didn't sleep much last night, had a stupid answer in my head that I couldn't fix till this morning. askubuntu.com/a/731455/231142

@Terrance well done ! :)

5:31 PM
@cl-netbox Thank you! =)
@cl-netbox 15.10 would not install on my VM at home, so I couldn't test it till this morning at work. =) Interesting when we get things stuck in our heads like that.

@Terrance You're welcome ! I know this from some of my thingies as well ... :)

@cl-netbox Good to know that I am not alone! =)

@Terrance :)
@Terrance : Today I had a user who purged his desktop in a way that we couldn't get it reinstalled ... there are things out there ... :)

@cl-netbox I just stumbled across that desktop one looking through things.

@Terrance Have you seen his last comment ? He believes in wonders coming true ... :)

5:39 PM
@cl-netbox Yeah, I just read that. I am thinking he might need to boot to live media, chroot to the hard drive, then reinstall that way.
@cl-netbox But yes, it does look like it was messed up pretty good.
@cl-netbox I think you are correct in him needing to reinstall the OS.

@Terrance I think that also won't work - better he reinstalls completely - saves much time at least ... :)

@cl-netbox Yes it does. And I also learned that you never reinstall over the top of another installation. That messes everything up!
=)

user136984
There are so many open 15.04 question from today, how come nobody is closing them?

VTC this plz

@Terrance I always wonder why someone does things like these at all ...

Q: How can I override xrandr selecting lower than the preferred resolution?

David FraserWhen I connect an external screen to my laptop using HDMI, the default resolution selected is not the maximum resolution - even though this resolution is listed under the available modes: HDMI1 connected 1920x1080+1920+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 160mm x 90mm 1024x768 6...

@Terrance True words spoken - this is what I am praying for a long time ... :)

@cl-netbox No experience, and think that everything they see is correct. If it is working, don't fix it!
@Serg Done. =) Well, I voted too!

@Terrance yes - also true words ! :)

@Terrance Thanks :) One question less on the unanswered list

5:44 PM
@Serg : Hi my friend ! :)

@cl-netbox You want to say, "look, if you see 1,000's of applications about to be uninstalled or removed, are you doing the right thing?" =)

@Serg You're very welcome! =)

@cl-netbox hello !
Also , o/ everybody

@Serg Hello! =)

5:46 PM
@Terrance ^_^

@Terrance I never had the need to uninstall much - I install only things I need ... that's it ! =)

user136984
What should we do about this guy who doesn’t know if he's running 15.04 or 15.10? :D

@cl-netbox Exactly! That is the way it should be too! =)
@ParanoidPanda Hello! And I added a comment to his question to include the output of /etc/os-release
@Serg I can remove my comment if you like? =)

@Terrance nope, that's totally OK, keep it

@Serg Ok. :)

5:50 PM
I edited my comment a bit, so now it keeps only kernel suggestion

@Serg Ah, very nice! =)

I seriously need a new set of glasses. And I've asked my mom twice - please find the eye test results that i had . . . See ? Never trust people with personal information, always keep at least a copy

user136984
@Serg: I'm confused, in "UPDATE 2", is he not meaning that he's figured it out?

@Serg Done ! :)

user136984
VTC this EOL question.

5:54 PM
@Serg Go for a new test and reports anything related to optical must be assured recently

user136984
And VTC this EOL question too.

@ParanoidPanda he figured out how to set older kernel, but it's not working; so i told him to try even older one

user136984
@Serg: Did you see my comment?

@MuditKapil i'd love that but i work and go to school 6 days a week . . . i wake up at 5 am and come home 9pm; Like . . . when do i have time for new one ?
@ParanoidPanda yes, and did you see mine ?
Security shouldn't get in the way of stability of a system

user136984
@Serg: Oh, now I did. :)

user136984
5:57 PM
@Serg: I would say that security in terms of having an unpatched old kernel and isn't getting updates any more, it is more important to find a solution that doesn't depend upon never updating your kernel again.

@Serg It varies in a very short time like 6months so better if to go for new better tested and its free i think

@ParanoidPanda My votes have been cast as well! =)

I actually have a spare set of glasses, but their lenses are way too strong - I think when the order was made, those folks made glasses with two different sets of lenses
The current ones i have work perfectly fine for me, but the lenses themselves are just chipped and scratched as if all i do every day is throw them around

Speaking of eyeglasses, I got to get in an get a new exam for new prescriptions. Thanks @Serg =)

@Terrance Always glad if i can help :)

6:01 PM
I don't know but i will strongly suggest to go for opthalmic tests and with current rating order a new one glasses

Only this time, I am asking for a pair of computer glasses as well. Going to look cool! ;)

@Terrance then choose some Ray Ban sunglasses ! :D

@cl-netbox Oh yeah! I think I will! ;)

Anybody knows about IEEE floating point format ?

user136984
@Terrance: You should get some of those sunglasses that they wear in The Matrix! ;D

6:05 PM
@Terrance here they are : ray-ban.com ! =)

user136984
I see a lot of spam adverts for those... :P

@ParanoidPanda You mean the one that Morpheus wears? Those are cool! :)

@ParanoidPanda wow - great idea - my all time favorite movie ! :)

You always look good in Ray-Ban Aviators!

user136984
@Terrance: I actually prefer the ones Neo wears, but the others are cool too! :D

6:07 PM
@ParanoidPanda Yes, those are cool too! =)

@Serg These glasses that Keanu Reeves wears in The Matrix would fit you very well ! :)

@cl-netbox I'm sure they would . . . besides , my terminal screen is already black with green font XD

@Serg nice :)

kos
@Serg <-, studied it

I miss Hercules displays. Well, adapter cards, that is...

6:19 PM
@kos So . . . I wanted to ask something . . . but now cannot recall what . . . but basically , in my computer organization class we're doing IEEE754 and I sort of get it, but not to the point where you wake up at 3 AM and just start adding binary floating point numbers Oo
This spring I wanted to sounds smart a lot . . .I really did . . . I'm taking CS2 in python, and Interface Techniques for Microcontrollers which is C, and Control System Analysis, and retaking Computer Organization . . .but it's week 4 already and all I really want at this point is sleep . . . .sad . . . .just sad

Dan
is it OK to ask and answer a question on how to install and run Ubuntu for a specific laptop? (it's this one: razerzone.com/gaming-systems/razer-blade ) or would it be considered off-topic (advertising or too localized)?

kos
@Serg Yeah, it's not exactly straightforward, there are lots of quirks with floats. If you want to have a look at this, it's a semi off-topic answer I gave a while ago, it explains briefly the standard and the quirks when the magnitude grows, in relation to sums and differences, maybe it helps understanding: askubuntu.com/a/634409/380067

Dan
Been fighting with it to run for almost a week now

@Dan That is a pretty cool laptop, but unfortunately, I don't know the rules as far as that is concerned.

@kos that question was forever ago ! good memories

6:30 PM
Goodbye :)

user136984
@cl-netbox: Bye! :)

user136984
@Terrance: Did you say that you were going to install Tox by the way? :)

Dan
@Terrance I personally love it. Specially after owning a 4kg laptop for almost 4 years.

kos
@Serg Yeah! I still remember that one because it was one of those where you end up straying away from the main topic almost completely and overkill whatever you end up talking about. :)

@ParanoidPanda I think so, but I have not got around to doing it yet. Silly me! I'll do it though. =)

6:33 PM
So, I figured out how to use my T3i as a webcam :D
Sorta

@Dan It does look cool!

@RPiAwesomeness webcam-ception

A bit yeah :D

Q: My external harddisk never sleeps

TrudleRAlthough my external HDD is running idle all the time, it never sleeps (I run it 24/7 and didn't use it for at least the last 5 days). Is there some way to handle that? It's kinda hot, as if it was doing "hard work" all the time and it keeps spinning. Or is this an NTFS related problem? Wouldn'...

@JacobVlijm are you also making a long answer? >:-D

user136984
VTC this EOL question.

user136984
Facepalm...

user136984
6:46 PM
I heard the phone ring on a radio play... And went to pick up my own phone! :D

user136984
It doesn't even sound anything like my phone! :D

This Nexus 5 is really... having issues.
Immediately after a full factory flash, it hangs when booting for the first time.
I'm half-tempted to put Kit Kat back on it.

@ParanoidPanda That's OK. I was watching a show on TV the other night, and a dog whined, so I got up and let my dogs out. They were both asleep when I called them to the door.

user136984
@Terrance: Oh dear... :D :D :D

@NathanOsman - thought you might like the AI challenges here

6:51 PM
Sublime update \o/
Shift-Tab is broken ಠ_ಠ

user136984
I've got the Numix GTK Theme, and since the last update when I click the scroll bars in Nautilus the page just shoots up to wherever I click on the bar as if the bar is much smaller and I am clicking some way beyond it rather than on it, is jumps around a lot and is very annoying, do you guys understand what I mean?

user136984
Because I have to at least get you guys to understand before I tell the developers... :P

@hbdgaf Reading...

user136984
Because maybe I'm going to need to make a screencast of it or whatever it's called...

It's going ALL THE WAY to where you click or it's going further towards it than you expect?

user136984
6:54 PM
@hbdgaf: The scroll bar is almost the size of the space where you can drag it across, and when I click somewhere on the scroll bar to drag it, the page either jumps up or down (depending on which end I clicked or dragged the bar).

That description makes more sense

hey guys do you know how to install a vpn (like free gate ) in ubuntu ?

look in to openvpn, openswan, or redsocks.

which one is free ?

all

6:58 PM
and faster ?!

@hbdgaf damn cool O

I've used OpenVPN. It works well enough, though it has a very steep learning curve.

@Rinzwind I thought so.

Especially if you want to forward IPv6 packets.

@hbdgaf I do NOT have time for that :-X

6:59 PM
thanks
Do anybody know anything about GCC ARM ?

I wanna edit my answer ! Come on wifi ! Bee nize

user136984
@Serg: Or you could just use Ethernet as I do. :P

user136984
@hbdgaf: The first time I misread it as "Or maybe it's just fat"! :D

@ParanoidPanda I could , but my ethernet cable is at home

Actually, I'm using this new laptop, and the wifi here is just gorgeous, much better than i had before. Of course, there are hiccups here and there, but over all, i am so happeh

user136984
Why do you all seem to be running Tox in a VM by the way? Is that just chance or is there something about Tox I should know about?

@Rinzwind kidding :) it was a "press the button and run" answer (I was teaching). But some excellent longer versions appeared in the meantime :)

@NathanOsman never stopped using KitKat myself

askubuntu.com/a/731728/295286 I've added a shell redirection approach . . . but how do i deal with newline ?

@Mateo It's my brother's phone so I'll wait to see how it works.
Maybe I can talk him into Ubuntu Touch :)

7:19 PM
;)
the community port works rather well

Argh. And audio is completely busted on this machine.

@Serg why would you create a list of the list first?

@JacobVlijm list of a list ? where do i do that ?
you mean dirList = [] part ?

@Serg yep, you could simply process the story per line?

@JacobVlijm just initializing a variable . . . I think if I use variable inside while or if statement , python gives an error or something

7:25 PM
Anyone know anything about writing scopes with JS?
Because I'm getting this Error: libunity-scopes.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory & have no idea why :(
Other than it's missing a shared object file

guys can u give anylink on how installing openvpn consider im new to ubuntu

@JacobVlijm see here
skolodya@ubuntu:$ ./makeDirs.py
dirone,dirtwo,dirthree

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "./makeDirs.py", line 7, in <module>

That's what happens if I comment dirList = [] part out

@Serg Mind if I look at the code?

user136984
I have created a rather useful little script for checking and notifying the user when executed which (if any) programs need the system to be restarted. There is no other way short of checking the files yourself or waiting for the Software Updater which may or may not at some point popup to tell you that your system needs a restart.

Oh never mind, found it

user136984
7:27 PM
Though as I only have that script to offer, and it is so small, simply getting it onto the universe repository, or making my own PPA with only it there doesn't feel quite right because I don't think anyone would install it because why would you install an untrusted PPA or some package from the universe repository if you could easily write the script yourself and just execute that?

user136984
So I was wondering if there is some sort of software bundle package in the main or universe repositories which just contains like useful stuff that I could just try to get my package into? I know that there are bundles of this type, just not sure what they are called and if there are any you guys think might accept my script?

@Serg I wouldn't use an "intermediate" list at all.\

@RPiAwesomeness IT's all here askubuntu.com/a/731728/295286 I assume you found that , right ?

@JacobVlijm well how then would I pass the extracted info to the next loop ?
oh . . .
extract string and make dir right away . . .

7:29 PM
@Serg exactly, works perfectly

Edited the code
How's the improvement ?
Maybe I should remove sample runs . . . will make it much cleaner

kos
7:51 PM
@ParanoidPanda If it's useful it doesn't really matter if it's simple, it can deserve its own package, however maybe you can also try getting it into bikeshed.

Q: Can't start Ubuntu VM on VirtualBox 5.0.14

neuronI've been trying to spin up Ubuntu and Xubuntu (14.04.3) VM's on VirtualBox installed on my Windows 7 laptop. Reflashing Kit-Kat...

@NathanOsman Good luck! ;)
@NathanOsman Is it Lollipop or Marshmallow giving you grief?

10:05 PM
@Terrance do you python ?

@Terrance Marshmallow.

@Serg I have scripted in Python before. I did a tunnel script for connecting through a Bastion server.
@NathanOsman Hmmmmm, I was just wondering. Hopefully Kit Kat works for you! Sucks when the phone will not work.

@Serg OK. Looking now. =)

let me know what you think . . . for extra credit we were supposed to make __ str __ , __ iter __ , __ repr __ , and next() , but i bailed on that . . . i'm kind of getting idea __ str __ has to rely on next and iter, but . . . my attention isn't too good lately . . .
connecting dots is kinda hard right now

Did you know that if you leave a man in a room with a tea cosy as time goes on the probability that he will wear it as a hat increases? I have proof here (a graph and footage from a hidden camera ;) ):

user136984
(5 minutes and 46 seconds in, but the link above should link you there automatically.)

user136984
:D

Oo

@Serg Why did you comment out the unittest.main()?

user136984
10:22 PM
I think I'm going to lock a friend of mine in a room with a tea cosy and a hidden camera and test it out! ;D

@Terrance because it's necessary only if we run the test, right ? otherwise, we run it as standalone program

@Serg Yes, that is correct. Either way, it looks good to me!

@Terrance ^_^ yaaay . . .

@Serg Tests look good and the output looks good! :)

well it technically is a hat @Paranoid, just a hat for tea pots instead of men.

10:26 PM
@Terrance the only thing I missed there is the extra credit . . . I need to find way to iterate over the linked list
Anyway, class over, i'm off. . ..

@Serg Ah. That sucks you missed it. :( Keep at it though. There are companies out there that love scriptors, especially for automation. :) Not that you would automate yourself out of a job, but that you would become more efficient. =)

user136984
@Seth: Yes, but if you were in a room with one, would you suddenly put it on your head for fun? Especially if it wasn't yours? :D

no, I suppose not.

user136984
I probably would... It's in my nature... :P

10:41 PM
@Terrance Aaand I'm back on mobile . . .So, after i complete a course in Python, what are my odds if i start looking for a real job ? What else i could put on resume ?

10:54 PM
@Serg Companies, like HP that my friend went to, were looking for scriptors, so they ran him through actually building scripts for his interview. He got the job. I think that is the way that they should interview people by seeing what they can do.
@Serg Your chances are good. I would have tried with him as well, but I am happy where I am at right now.
@Serg I would put any languages that you know for scripting, as well as support that you give people, like here that show you have skills.

woo!! 100 user mark on my new scope!

@Mateo Nice! If I had an Ubuntu phone you would have 101. =)

103 ;p

OK, how about 104? ;)
@Serg There are also a lot of networking appliances out there that use scripting in one way or another to setup VLANs, ports, speed, etc. Knowing things like that really help, especially in data center environments.

user136984
This really is amazing! :D

user136984
I absolutely must go there!!!

user136984
You Germans are really lucky...

@ParanoidPanda I want to go to that place sooooooooo freaking badly!!!
That airport is absolutely amazing! There is a 2 hour long video someone put up on youtube just about that airport alone. =)

user136984
Really? Wow! I must see it @Terrance!!! :D

user136984
Can you give me the link please? :)

11:12 PM
@ParanoidPanda That is incredible.
Are the vehicles remote controlled?

user136984
@Nathan: If you watch the video for long enough they should explain it, but I understand that they are all automated with self-developed software though humans are monitoring everything.

user136984
And look at this! :D

...running Windows though :P

user136984
Probably, but we'll soon change that! ;P

user136984
11:19 PM
Wow! They have shuttles which launch and then go and land places (the planes do that too as far as I understand - they go to other airports) and this one is even put away in a big building with sliding doors!!! :D

user136984
I love this place so much!

user136984
I only just found out about it by chance! But it's soon to become my second home!!!!! :D

@ParanoidPanda Let me find it again.
@ParanoidPanda ^ there you go

It's all HO scale?
Wow.

user136984
11:24 PM
@Terrance: Thanks! :)

@NathanOsman Yes
@ParanoidPanda No problem! :)

Very impressive.

That is why I must go to Northern Germany!

user136984
I don't think I've ever been to Germany actually... But now I know that I definitely should go sometime soon! :)

user136984
Anyway, goodnight folks! ;)
