6:00 PM
There, I linked 'em in a comment. I'm not worried or even bothered by it. I'm just glad they got the help they needed and it works out. It is also probably a duplicate question.

That's a tough one @ByteCommander. I'm inclined to say it's poorly worded but it's a potential answer - it's probably best as a comment in my opinion.

@KGIII I'd say it's rather a comment too, but worded slightly differently, it would be a valid answer.

LOL Nah, I replied to their question where they'd left a comment. That would be funny, however.
@ByteCommander Yup. I'm very inclined to agree. I suppose one of us should flag it and say something...

@kos looking

6:07 PM

kos
@Seth IMO it's (totally pointlessly) rude. There's no reason at all for the last statment, unless (not that it makes it justifiable) you're so angry at the topic that you end up being rude to the person bringing it up.

@KGIII Problem is that he can't comment yet. (<50 rep)

@kos yeah, I've trimmed the comment down.

Ah! LOL Well, he'll have to edit it. :D
I've also decided to comment at the meta discussion. ;-)

kos
@Seth Thanks, looks way better.

6:20 PM
@Terrance That poor mouse! ;____;

@ByteCommander When I worked in a computer repair shop, I have seen some strange things inside computers. I never did find a mouse like that though.

@HeatherBrown Those monitors have the same background as your user icon, I think... Or am I wrong? Nice multimonitor setup though! askubuntu.com/q/78792/367990

kos
@Terrance I've seen that one before, I'm pretty confident it's fake

@Terrance My teacher once had a spider roasted on the graphics card that caused a short circuit...

@kos Well, I figured I'd leave a novella expressing my thoughts on the subject with regards to your meta link. I'm not the most articulate but, darn it, I'm pretty verbose. :D

6:32 PM
@Seth May I flag an answer as VLQ if it does not address the question?

@kos fake or not, I have seen systems with mouse droppings in them. Cockroaches and other such unidentifiable creatures in it. Just thought the pic was funny. =)
@ByteCommander I bet that smelled yummy of fried spider! ;)

@Terrance Depends on your cultural background. Where I come from, spider != yummy

@ByteCommander Not here either. I guess my sarcasm didn't transfer well.
=)

kos
@KGIII +1 also on yours for the balanced thoughts. I have mixed feelings about that topic. Also because the question is not specific enough, that's why all those answers answer a different aspect of that topic.

I noticed it, but wanted to counter! >;-)

kos
6:37 PM
@Terrance Yeah. :D

@ByteCommander Then again, there is a candy company named Hot Lix that puts bugs in their suckers. Real bugs.

@kos Yeah, it's not really always black and white. I can see why some people would be offended - they've invested time and effort and that makes them emotionally attached even if they're just internet points. But, my goal is to help people (while falling within the rules of AU). If I've not posted my comment as an answer, please do so on my behalf!!!

@ByteCommander yeah, I suppose that'd work.
It's not always obvious though, so use carefully.

6:40 PM
@kos Personally, I don't think I'd actually copy someone's comment like that. Heck, I got scolded for not enumerating the three disparate sources that I'd used to come up with a question. :D

user139252
@ByteCommander Same flower, different picture

user139252
But, yes :D

user136984
What is the GNOME Photos application called (that is the package name)?

@ParanoidPanda You sure do break your computer in new and interesting ways. I'm half-convinced you do it on purpose. ;-)

user136984
@KGIII: What do you mean? :D

kos
6:45 PM
@KGIII Yeah, even without getting to the internet points or if "stealing" (mind the quotes) answers is "right" or "wrong", deeming an answer as "stolen" is always a mere assumption. Who says the user who posted it didn't know it himself?

@kos True - I think people might look for the simplicity in black and white, arbitrary answers (we can speculate why but that'd be impolite, maybe) for complex questions. I think I can understand why.
@ParanoidPanda Well, you seem to have a new "problem" multiple times per day. At some point, I'm pretty sure you're just looking to break stuff. :-)

user136984
Nah, I always have a system that doesn't work quite as it should... :P

user136984
It wouldn't feel quite the same if something wasn't corrupted etc! :D

Or you just have a utopic imagination of how it should work...

I think Byte summed it up nicely. ;-)
It probably worked as designed until you started poking stuff.

6:49 PM
o/

I, of course, encourage poking, breaking, and learning.
o/ @NathanOsman

kos
@KGIII There might be the blatant case, but it's not occurring to me. Once I "jumped in" in a discussion in the comments (by posting a cold answer) where someone was asking OP for debugging informations about its wifi not working. Probably the commenter had the answer at that point, but guess what? I happened to have the same laptop of OP and to know exactly what was wrong with the wifi and how to fix it.

@kos I'm not really able to think of a specific case but I'm still fairly n00b to this community and, well, I don't always pay as much attention the dates and times that people posted or who commented what and where. This was my first experience with it and it just happened to coincide with YAPQ (Yet Another Panda Question). ;-)

xD Great acronym!

LOL Thanks. I think we need a YAPQ tag.
3
I must admit, he does make me think.

kos
6:54 PM
Seconded 100%

For some reason, chat is playing nicely with my VPN. It wasn't always so nice but it has been nice for the past couple of weeks. I wonder if they changed something? I switch IP addresses pretty often as I go from server to server. It used to lag or sometimes disconnect me after switching. That has not been the case for a couple of weeks now.

Chat usually uses WebSockets but it falls back to long-polling if necessary.

user136984
Hmm... This is getting stranger and stranger... :D

@NathanOsman Hmm... I kind of figured it was sockets. I wonder if something has been changed at the VPN or at my end. There's a good chance that I changed some settings around that time and don't recall which - perhaps something in uMatrix.

@NathanOsman I found a bug in your script. The preferences do not have any effect after refreshing the site!

7:03 PM
@ByteCommander unpossible!

Seriously, though - they are supposed to stick.
If they aren't, that's a bug.

My icon gets shown although "show me" is unchecked.
I've unchecked it and closed the preferences window, my icon disappeared.
Then I refreshed the page, my icon was there again.
I opened the preferences window and the option was still unchecked, but my icon was visible. (see screenshot).

user136984
I am also able to reproduce this bug, the settings stay, however their effect does not.

kos
@ParanoidPanda Have you tried a different keyboard? I believe you'll be able to get one for less than 10 pounds, unless they're extremely overpriced compared to here.

7:06 PM
@ParanoidPanda I'll write a GitHub issue.

Here's where the settings are supposed to be written to localStorage: github.com/nathan-osman/auchatstatus/blob/master/static/js/…

user136984
@kos: I actually do have an external keyboard next to me but it is under a lot of junk and through a complex system of wires, connected to my Raspberry Pi (which I have somehow lost under my desk)... :P

@ByteCommander Please include your browser in the bug text.

Firefox 42.0 on Ubuntu 15.10.

kos
@ParanoidPanda Really, you should try the other keyboard. People are losing their time to follow up on that question. Just try that since you have the chance to.

7:16 PM
@ByteCommander you hit the 200
=)

@NathanOsman Do you know which about:config setting in Firefox is responsible for the localstorage?

Actually, I can reproduce it here as well.
So I don't think it's a problem on your end.

Okay. Only Firefox or others as well?

I even have a bit of an idea what may be causing this.
@ByteCommander I'm using Opera, so others are included.

@A.B. 210 actually, cool!
I could spend another bounty now...

7:24 PM
You could =) Have you checked your Legendary counter?

@A.B. It shows a depressing value of 9/150...

user136984
@kos: Ok, I will, I guess that would narrow it down a little... :)

@ByteCommander Meh, Only ¹4¹ days =)

@A.B. You have a problem with your AltGr key or why are your '1' jumping up to '¹'?

@ByteCommander But the next target is 50 -> EPIC

7:28 PM
@NathanOsman So I tried using your virtualenv script and it made a directory titled -venv and I can't do anything to it. rm doesn't work, mv doesn't work. They all complain about invalid option -- 'e'

@ByteCommander smaller looks better for 141

@RPiAwesomeness Oh... you were supposed to pass a name to the script :P
But I can help you delete the file.

@NathanOsman I did that, I thought
I made it an alias
alias workon="sh ~/workon.sh $1"

Oh, I have no idea how aliases work.

Oooo...
I see my issue there

7:30 PM
I just stick it in ~/.local/bin :P

Shoulda used $0

@NathanOsman An alias with a parameter? o_O

Have never seen that either... Must check.

Hmm... how to remove the file... good question...
I recall we had that come up before once...
Trying to find the question...
@RPiAwesomeness do this:
rm -- -venv
That should delete it.
Oh right, it's a directory.
rm -rf -- -venv
...in that case.

yeah, got rid of it

7:34 PM
\o/
That should totally be an interview question.
"Alright, Mr. Candidate, I just created a file beginning with a dash. Delete it for me."
It would be fun to watch.

Tries "rm -rf"... tries "echo -test | xargs rm"... "It's not working! Argh!"

@NathanOsman I even fail to create one through the terminal! ^__^
Ah, did it. Save anything with nano.

kos
@ParanoidPanda Good. ;). And it will by far I think, that indeed looks like an hardware issue.

@ByteCommander Exactly what I was about to suggest.
...or:
touch -- -test
...or:
touch `pwd`/-test

7:43 PM
Or touch ./-test
Even simpler.
But the -- separator does not work for echo.
There was a question recently about that and the solution was not to use echo...

How can you save a file with echo?

No, not save a file. Just print a -.

Problem is the same, but echo does not support --

I will leave ... see you tomorrow ... goodbye :)

7:46 PM
nathan@nathan-desktop:~$ echo "--"
--
Er...

No, printing "--" works, but you can't print "-".

nathan@nathan-desktop:~$ echo "-"
-

Sorry, wrong.

You can't print "-n" for example.
Because that's a valid argument for echo.
Please excuse my bad memory... :-/

kos
7:48 PM
$ echo -e '\x2dn'
-n

I've got an idea...
nathan@nathan-desktop:~$ echo "LW4=" | base64 -d
-n
See, there are ways if you are determined :)
Although I like @kos's solution better.

9
Q: How to print "-n" without issuing a newline?

Star OSI'm trying to print -n using the echo command. But if i simply type echo -n, it only issues a newline, not show up -n, instead it issues a newline.

kos
$ echo -e '\u2dn'
-n
^^ and the last one that comes to mind

@NathanOsman @kos That was the question. ^
You could add your answers.

Nah, the accepted answer is probably the best way to go.
Mine is more of a hack.

7:54 PM
it's a total hack ;p

I better leave now for today. Good night!

kos
I just did. XD
Night @ByteCommander!

8:20 PM
> "If your laptop is affected you should remove the certificate with the Windows Certificate Manager. Alternatively you can install Linux and delete Windows."
3
Lol.

Leave it to the Germans to have an overcomplicated sense of humor.

@fossfreedom Definitely the picture.

ugh
I have to create a Yahoo account.

Flickr?

no, a Yahoo group -.-

8:35 PM
oh, that's worse.
flickr at least has a use

yeah :(

(I've got a flickr account! Never upload anything though...)

ugh, why do they demand my mobile number.
I hate you Yahoo.

Oh good, my yahoo account only has 600 unread

wow, gotta know a gender too.

8:37 PM
last checked in february.

Bad News Folks
> "The Yorba Foundation, a group of developers working on applications like Geary or Shotwell, is no more, and the projects are now available through the GNOME stack." - Yorba Group, Developers of Geary and Shotwell, Is No Longer Active

8:54 PM
I really dislike Yahoo.
Consequently I just have all email there get forwarded.

hello :)

@GeoMint hello :)

9:08 PM
@GeoMint o/ :)

i enabled 3D acceleration to my ubuntu 15.10 ubuntu gnome and its more awesome (virtualbox)
@A.B. :D
when 16.04 will be released i will install ubuntu gnome to my desktop as my basic OS

Yeah, GNOME is great :)

yeah, gnome 3.18 + LTS = life :P

No, 3.20 and 16.04 :)

really?

9:12 PM
Only with additional PPAs

i think its unstable with PPA

Wait - I found people that like Gnome???

I LOVE GNOME
not just "like"

@KGIII yes? :D

(I'm not a fan but I don't hate it. The people I usually associate with online really hate it - a lot.)
I do like Cinnamon, however.

9:15 PM
gnome and xfce are my favorite

I'm pretty basic. I like LXDE.

I've never tried xfce. But fvwm :)

fvwm :P

XFCE isn't bad. Gnome just has features that I don't use - so I don't hate it. However, it's pretty much loathed, almost universally, by the folks on Slashdot. I mean, absolutely hated - they hate it more than systemd.

@KGIII LXDE is not customizable
in xfce you can change the most of it

9:17 PM
Well, it's not very customizable, no and I'm okay with that.

i don't like Unity

I don't need/want a lot of customizations. I'm pretty basic when it comes to my DE. I don't need glitz and glamor, I just want it to work - the lighter the better.

@KGIII i like to be different. I want my DE to be as i like. minimal look is clean and pretty sometimes

Err... My terminal mimics a green screen of yore.

Unity? Never again :)

9:19 PM
hehe
that's why i love linux

I do have some color customizations that I utilize. I change some transparency options. I have a nice background. I'm not entirely bland. :D
I kind of don't even want to see my OS more than I have to. I just want to use it to do stuff.

can you send me a screenshot?

Yeah, gimme a sec. I do have my own custom "dock" type of thing that shows up when I mouse to the top of the screen. Do you want that included?

yeah :)

One sec...

@kos ahahahahha

What does NaA mean?

kos
@GeoMint Huh?

Not an answer

kos
@Terrance ^^

9:24 PM
@kos first time seen that :P

Gracias! =)

:D

kos
@GeoMint A NaA?

yeah

9:25 PM
@KGIII what dock is that?

Mine.

really?

I just made it with the included features. It goes away when I am not hovered over it.

well... respect

kos
Yeah, I have 297 moderator flags, and quite possibly 80% of those are NaAs.

9:26 PM
LOL Thanks. It's actually pretty basic and it's just LXDE.
I use Lubuntu. :D

kos
LXDE is fast though.

It is. It's blazingly fast on new hardware. I really appreciate the low overhead. My main goal is functionality but I think it looks nice.

let me open my laptop and send you my xfce screenshot

@KGIII I bounce between Lubuntu and Xubuntu now. =)

Absolutely. I'll grab a tea.
@Terrance I usually just use Lubuntu lately. :D
Gonna make a tea for the missus and I. BRB

9:29 PM
@KGIII Lubuntu is good! I just get slightly more configuration from Xubuntu. Still both are very fast on my system.

@GeoMint what widget thingy is that?

its conky if you mean white-blue
@Seth
@KGIII another screeny imgur.com/ZwRXRbA

@Terrance I've only used Xubuntu in a live environment so I've never dug into it very deep.

cool, thanks!

9:42 PM
@GeoMint That doesn't look bad at all.

:D

conky is awesome, but I used it for a little bit and then . . . meh . . . .I don't go back to my desktop so much, either i have terminal open full screen or browser, or both
Also, o/ everybody

o/

@Serg Yeah, it doesn't make much sense for me to add Conky. I've played with it (I think it's still installed on one system) but I don't have need for it so I don't use it.

@KGIII Keyboard shortcuts are definitely easier to configure in Xubuntu. Lubuntu definitely boots faster. =)

kos
9:43 PM
I see my desktop (not for much) only when switching to an empty workspace
o/ @Serg

@kos (^_^)/

LOL I do tend to keep a terminal open with Slurm running.

DevRobot has been at it again. He has hard time explaining his questions : askubuntu.com/q/702528/295286
Slurm ? That's something new . .. . To the google !

LOL It's a silly network monitor.

Ah, i see , kind of like nethogs

9:46 PM
Yup. slurm -i eth0 or whatnot.

Also ->http://stackoverflow.com/q/368002/3701431

kos
@Serg No like for hyperlinks? :(

I gotta be honest here... I mostly just like the moving text and pretty colors. I don't actually have a good reason for liking slurm. There's no compelling reason for it to exist as a full time application on my system other than I like pretty colors and some information.
I also really like Terminator as my terminal emulator. If you've not tried it then, well... I don't know what to say except give it a shot.

@KGIII you should try Terminology

9:52 PM
I think I have... Lemme look - I think it's installed on the box at home.
Nope. Not installed. That's an absurd amount of dependencies. :/

kos
@Serg You just needed a space after the >. You're so lazy :D : stackoverflow.com/q/368002/3701431

@KGIII this is how it looks: i.imgur.com/fjEqqyP.png ( and i don't use fish)

Hmm... I don't think I'd want the GUI bit in my terminal. I usually go to CLI-land to avoid the GUI. :D (Not that I'm anti-GUI but sometimes I get stuff done better in the terminal and without a mouse/trackpad.)

afk

Ayuh.

kos
9:59 PM
Note the sad smiley at the right side for the ret value != 0

LOL
I'll snap a screenie of Terminator, one sec.

@KGIII the gui is showed when you right click your mouse

Ah - okay. That's better. I was worried that'd be there all the time. :/
This one's not finished being configured - it's the one at home:

nice
@kos when i pressed return 1 i got this message: "bash: return: can only `return' from a function or sourced script"

kos
@GeoMint I heard you!
:P
That's Zsh

10:06 PM
:P

This is LXterminal "properly" configured.
disconnects from VNC now ;-)

@KGIII enlightenment.org/about-terminology this is the official site

This poor laptop is just a mess with who knows what installed and not even remotely considering the looks. It's more like a messy room than anything else. No screenshots of that for ya. :P

:P

Yeah. I've seen Enlightenment. It's got potential. :D
Ah - that emulator is a part of it. That's why it has so many dependencies.

10:10 PM
yeah ;)
BRB

back
Gonna go to my friends house today and install cygwin + ssh on her crappyy vista PC
Taking care of it remotely will be much easier i guess

Meh... Vista, itself, wasn't too bad once you got SP1 installed.

Also, minecraft server on Digital Ocean, so i can play with her kid :D But that's a long term project, not gonna be up any time soon
Meh, I'd rather stay on Ubuntu than any windows
which is what i am also considering - maybe i can install 14.04 on that pc

LOL I don't mind Windows so much as I just don't find it as gainful where learning is concerned but that's due to familiarity.

problem is, all the chinese software is mostly for windows

10:16 PM
Go with Lubuntu. It's much faster. nods I posted screenshots above. It even can look pretty good.
Ah... Well... That sucks. I'm pretty sure that there is Chinese language support but I don't know what software would be required.

@Serg why cygwin?

@GeoMint because i can use korn shell there, also because it's unix emulator . . . also because that solves problem of keeping windows software and administering the system in a familiar to me environment
also because yoloswag360noscopeblazeit#MLGpro

hahahaha
wow, i didn't knew that affects also the system

Why not just use RDP and a viewer client? I think TurboVNC Viewer works with RDP.

because i am not familiar with those

10:20 PM
Then you get a nice GUI so you can resolve more problems.

@KGIII teamviewer works also

I use Cygwin at my job, and it works well for working with other Linux servers. =)

It's Remote Desktop Protocol and you just use a viewer and you login and have complete GUI access.

i never understood why RDP exists in Windows

Also because it has awk, vim , and other tools without which i just wanna punch the CMD screen
:D

10:22 PM
The only problem is that trying to run some applications while logging into Windows through Cygwin fails like trying to remotely start the screensaver.

If you're trying to fix problems then doing something like changing a system setting, say one to display an icon on the desktop or install software, then you're probably gonna want a GUI.
RDP exists to have a single format to forward the desktop to a different desktop @GeoMint.

i know... but i never made it work
stupid microsoft programs

LOL Well, that's probably not Window's fault. :P
I've had quite a bit of success with it. Just make sure to forward the ports in the router if you're going to access it from outside the network.
I do prefer RealVNC with Windows but their stuff works well enough.

@KGIII windows does not really uses a username, so its pretty difficult to login from other computers
ssh and vnc is way easier to use

Just use their credentials - the ones they use to login to their profile. :D

10:26 PM
they don't... its Windows. nobody sets a password

LOL That's not Microsoft's fault. :P

well.... when i installed ubuntu to my dad's computer, he asked me "why do i need put a password?"

You could have configured it without one... It'd be just as silly as doing the same thing on Windows but you could have.

yeah :P i just told him to set it and i configured gdm to autologin
hehe

We've got a lazy and not educated problem. I believe it's often called a PBKAC.

10:29 PM
HAHAHAHHAH
" Problem Between Keyboard and Chair " = user

I thought ID-ten-T was better! :P

Hopefully your father's learned the importance of a good strong password. It does suck to have to type it but it's worth the effort for the added security layer.
LOL I'm fond of id-10-t as well @Terrance.

@KGIII :D Oh yeah!

Hmm... The missus wants to go get food.
I suppose I should join her.

hahaha

10:32 PM
I shall return. Probably not too long from now. Then I must sleep early and do the whole festivity thing. Yay... Turkey and the likes.

ok :) enjoy your meal

Thanks. I'll be back.

I've almost got the web interface for my relay complete.

@NathanOsman yyyyyyaaaaayyyy . . . . What's it gonna do tho ? Oo
@Rinzwind @oli askubuntu.com/q/702522/295286 Off topic or no ? OP runs ubuntu , but asking about OSX in virtualbox. Ubuntu host, OSX guest

10:48 PM
@Serg I'm going to say no.

@Seth I am curious how that wouldn't be off topic?

@Terrance sorry, wrong reply for Serg's wording. I was trying to say it was off-topic :)

@Seth Ah, silly me. Thank you! =)

I was thinking "is this on-topic or no" but he said "is this off-topic or no". my bad ;)

kos
@Seth That looks on-topic to me, 99% that's about VirtualBox's settings

10:58 PM
@kos I don't see how much video memory OSX is using (of its own accord) has anything to do with Ubuntu or VB?

@Serg You'll see shortly.
It's going to be really neat.

If you can show otherwise I'll reopen it.
(or tell otherwise)
