Again Kali and Ubuntu. Nice: askubuntu.com/q/702066/367165

@cl-netbox: Bye (if you are the one going ;-))!

So all attempts to sign-up via Android failed. Thankfully I have my Mac Mini here.
I was able to (on the second attempt) sign up using iTunes.

user136984
Oh no...

Yeah I stopped watching/reading/listening to the news >1 year ago, and my life has never been better...

user136984
7:34 PM
@quake120: Ignorance is bliss... :P

Who really trusts the media anyway?

It isn't ignorance. The news has nothing of value to me (or most other people). Spending the same time most people waste on the news learning a valuable skill isn't ignorance, it is intelligence.

^--- this

:)

@NathanOsman exactly.

7:41 PM
@quake120 hey I have to do something at work to pass the day :-P

I'd recommend learning something instead...Much better use of time. I know a lot of people like the news, I just can't stand it

@quake120 I'm with you.

It's just all war, death, destruction, famine, terrible things.

user136984
But if there is terrorism or a war breaking out in your country, you really should know about it.

Nathan, did you see my audio problem yesterday?

7:43 PM
@quake120 he can't hear you :=)

dope ring is a group of drug dealers or other forms of criminals
But in that case, blondes = stupid = dopes

@A.B.: Do you use Tox by the way? :)

@ParanoidPanda Sure =)

user136984
@A.B.: Would you like to add me as a contact on Tox? :)

user136984
I don't mind if you say no, I wasn't sure how people exactly used Tox here, most seem happy to just add people here as contacts there, but it's fine with me if you don't. :)

8:09 PM
@NathanOsman ... The TL;DR of the audio problem is: System locked up, I rebooted, lost audio, checked mute everywhere I could find, uninstalled/reinstalled Pulseaudio/ALSA, still no go...in frustration, I just happened to find another mixer in the start menu and mute was checked. Ugh.
Waste of an hour
Ubuntu has like 4 - 5 mixers

user136984
@A.B.: Ok, I've sent you a request. :)

@quake120 Yup :)
alsamixer is always a good place to start.
It offers some features that none of the other mixers do.

user136984
@Ravan: You use qTox don't you? Do you get this bug too? :)

Yep, I tried alsamixer, it wasn't muted
I think it was Jack audio or something that was causing the issue

Oh, Jack.
Yeah, that runs on top of ALSA, I think.

8:13 PM
I also tried pavucontrol...everything was fine there

@quake120 was about to suggest that :-X

That just affects PulseAudio though.

It works now...It was just that one mixer that was muted.

my best comment today:

Lol...

8:14 PM
Hey, just like mine not getting any audio. I just upgrade installed Xubuntu-desktop, and no sound whatsoever. :(
Interesting enough that my sound works in other DEs just fine.

@A.B. Hello my friend! =)

@A.B.: Do you know anything about this by the way? Or at least can tell me if I can find the location that @Serg speaks of on GNOME? :)

8:30 PM
@A.B. Will that install the ubuntu-desktop for me if I run it?

@Terrance you're GREAT, there is an error. I meant sudo apt-get install aptitude; aptitude search '!~i?reverse-depends("^ubuntu-desktop$")' -F "%p" | grep -v ':i386' | xargs sudo apt-get --reinstall install
to reinstall the desktop

@A.B. OK, I will run it. =)
Haha

It works only, I you have an installed ubuntu-desktop

@Terrance Yes, this command is part of the command to reinstall the ubuntu-desktop
And with your help I found two errors

Time to go

@A.B. Very nice! I think it worked on mine, but since I am not running Ubuntu Desktop, it will not install it.
@A.B. Have a great night! =)

user136984
Has a moderator's account ever been hacked by the way? And I mean, if that does happen, can anything bad be reversed?

9:09 PM
@ParanoidPanda Yes, SE should be able to undo most of the damage.

user136984
@terdon: Can moderators see information about a user's login history and personal information?

Define login history and personal information

user136984
Well, IP address and any other login information which SE keeps and displays to mods. And information such as a user's email address. and real name which they have provided. I was given the impression by another mod that you guys could see this information.

user136984
@terdon: So are you able to see this information or have I been misinformed?

Yes. Not sure what you mean by other login information but yes, we can see the rest.
Note that each mod can only see this information for users of the site they moderate. I can't see yours from your AU or chat accounts.

user136984
9:19 PM
Right, so if you got hacked then the hacker would be able to just go in and see all of that information for any user on the site(s) you are a mod of? There is no request for information that you have to make that has to be approved? You can just see it all? This doesn't seem very secure to me... There should be more in place to safeguard SE users' privacy.

Sigh
I do have to click a few times before seeing it if that makes you feel any better.
I'd be more worried about SE employee's accounts getting hacked though, they can see everything everywhere.
Not passwords, of course.

user136984
I still think that if a single mod wants to see a user's personal information they should at least need to make some sort of request which needs to be approved for them to access the information (and they need to provide a reason for requesting the information) and which will be logged.

user136984
That would be to also prevent abuse by a mod, as well as a hacker.

kos
(question that I'm too lazy to research for but that I think it would be interesting to answer, if someone wants to: askubuntu.com/questions/702121/…)

What is the default display/window manager on Ubuntu GNOME?

GDM
WM is either metacity or mutter iirc.

Ah, of course! Silly me! :D

And Unity Ubuntu is Compiz?

lightDM and compiz, yes.

@ParanoidPanda It's the same exact thing in GNOME: askubuntu.com/questions/702125/…

user136984
@kos: It is?

user136984
But compiz isn't the default window manager...

user136984
And the answer talks about configuring that...

I think they are using a shell theme

kos
9:48 PM
@ParanoidPanda No, maybe I'm wrong. I mean, the positioning its the same but apparently it doesn't resize like that

user136984
@kos: Well, I don't use compiz, so why would an answer which tells me how to configure compiz to do this help me?

kos
@ParanoidPanda Sorry, my bad. See my comment under your question. However I don't know why, but I'm still convinced that windows resized automatically on Unity for me. However I may very well be wrong.

user136984
@kos: Well, I can resize them, but just not into the 4 group thing that @ByteCommander had in his answer screenshotted.

user136984
VTC this Minty question as off-topic.

kos
Yes, I mean that on Unity they would resize to 1/4 of the screen when moving them with CTRL+ALT+9/3/1/6.

10:03 PM
@ParanoidPanda Looking.

user136984
@kos: Well, I don't actually really want keyboard shortcuts to be involved in this, I just want it so that when I drag it to a side (not corner) it automatically resizes to that side (except for the top which makes it fill the screen), but when I drag it to a corner, for it to resize to the corner instead.

what do you think of Atom (text editor)

user136984
Just posted a Q&A here by the way which I think some GNOME users might be interested in. :)

Well, the dull colors for one. I'm a fan of aero
Then there's how the removed the start button and start menu in Windows 8.0
Still no start menu in 8.1
Long-time users had no idea how to use it
They tried to unify mobile and desktop, but failed pretty badly, pretty much ignoring desktop users and just making everything work well for tablets

@Zacharee1 8.1 has a start enu

@GeoMint start screen
Important difference
Classic Shell is not a viable alternative. If you can install that, you have the ability to learn Windows 8. CS is just a style preference

i don't really care :P it stills do the job for me :P

Get 10

@Zacharee1 i hate win 10. its worse spyware

10:52 PM
How so? If you have Home, you can get a program to disable everything bad. Pro, you can do it on the OS itself

@Zacharee1 You just proved his point. Anything that requires an external program to fix is really broken. Anything that ships with spyware installed by default (Ubuntu, Windows etc) is just plain wrong.

user136984
@GeoMint:

user136984

Ubuntu fixed it for the latest release though. Or was it the next? Anyway, at least they're removing the default Amazon spyware.
3

@ParanoidPanda its nice

user136984
10:55 PM
Yeah, and Docky is normally hidden so windows can fill the full space and not have Docky get in the way.

user136984
@terdon: What Amazon spyware?

@ParanoidPanda The default Unity search will send your searches to amazon. Or used to.

user136984
Eww...

@terdon Since I'm not as paranoid as you people, I'm perfectly fine with having them see what I install. It's nothing intrusive.

@Zacharee1 It's the principle of the thing. When I run a search on my computer, I don't want that data to be sent to a huge multinational company. If I wanted that, I would be using Windows.

10:59 PM
@terdon You use Google, Amazon and Facebook, don't you?

@Zacharee1 Google sometimes, usually duckduckgo though and facebook no.
Even if I did though, I am given a choice. It doesn't happen by deafult on my new computer when I try to search stuff locally.

@terdon @terdon true :P Richard Stallman did a video about that

Pretty much any site you use tracks you (cookies), and a lot send your searches to ad agencies. People are suddenly freaking out about it
@terdon I thought it does, at least before the latest release

@Zacharee1 Cookies you need to opt into. At least in the EU. And no, people are not suddenly freaking out, sites are suddenly doing it. None of this used to happen 10 years ago.

DuckDuckGo :D

11:02 PM
@terdon every site I've visited that uses cookies says "This site uses cookies [and there's nothing you can do about it]"

@Zacharee1 Yes, Unity does that. That's my point. Unlike sites like Google where you choose to go and know you're being tracked, this came as part of your default OS. If you're using Ubuntu anyway. Which I don't.

erm
You don't use Ubuntu?

Nope.

ō_ô

@Zacharee1 so stupid that message with cookies... they just woke one morning and put that in every site.

11:03 PM
I did use it for a couple of years a few years ago but I haven't done so for at least 7 years or so.

But if Ubutu has removed it because of dissatisfied users, MS can't be far behind

@Zacharee1 Ha! Fat chance. Ubuntu is still nominally a Linux and its users are i) more technical on average than Windows users and ii) more likely to care.

wise words

There are enough people out there dissatisfied with MS that programs and patches have been written to block/disable these features

kos
Also Microsoft is used to pay the Antitrust for whatever they've done and keep doing it.

11:05 PM
package managers is something that windows need. windows store is a stupid idea

I don't argue with that

I had a quick look at Windows 10 and it doesn't seem so bad. Apart from the obvious privacy issues, I mean. At least it seems to work.

@terdon i really don't like the Graphical environment

It's the prettiest one I've seen, so far.
In the Windows world, I mean.

Windows XP is top for me

11:12 PM
@GeoMint Really? Wow. That was pretty ugly and very unstable. Windows was pure crap after 3.11 and until 7 IMO.

user136984
@terdon: Do you know anything about smooth things?

Still crap, but at least more stable crap

@terdon somehow i like it more

Smooth?
Oh, and here's my desktop, by the way:

user136984
@terdon: Cool! :)

11:19 PM
@terdon how long you have arch on your pc

Oh, a month or so, I guess.
Maybe a bit less. About a week before you installed it on your VM.

οκ :)

kos
My Arch box broke. The current GNOME version doesn't work well in VirtualBox.

Before that I was using LMDE (which is basically Debian with a couple of extra tweaks), before that Mint, before that Ubuntu, before that openSuSe, before that SuSe and Fedora, and way before that Mandrake.
:)
I should try gentoo and slack at some point and I'll have used all the main ones.
Oh, yeah, I also used RedHat back before Fedora existed.

Oli
Those were the days

11:25 PM
Ah, yes. The joys of having maybe a dozen packages in the repos and having to rpmfind.net or compile everything.

Oli
(or pay)

Much as I like to diss Ubuntu, the first time I installed it, it blew me away. By far the easiest install I'd ever seen. It was also my first introduction to the deb world.
I wouldn't use it myself these days but I sure am glad that Ubuntu exists. It made Linux accessible to a hell of a lot more people.
Which explains why I like to spend my time helping all you horrible little Ubuntu users :P

user136984
Please VTC this as a duplicate of this.

Oli
@terdon You'd actively avoid using it?

@Oli In what way? I wouldn't chose to install it, no. Given the choice between a Windows machine and an Ubuntu one, I'd take the Ubuntu and run.
I would remove Unity though.

kos
11:28 PM
@ParanoidPanda Can't you just agree with the close vote?

user136984
@kos: I don't think so... It's my own close vote... But I will check...

@terdon there's no reason to install vanilla ubuntu if you don't like it..

If we're going to be serious, I only have minor gripes about Ubuntu, no hatred of it, and quite a bit of respect.

go with ubuntu mate and then install cinnamon, for e.g.
@ParanoidPanda those aren't really dupes, and if they were I'd close them the other way.

If I were to go back to an Ubuntu-like thing, I'd go for Mint, not Ubuntu.

11:30 PM
i like Ubuntu with GNOME and XFCE Graphical Environments. (MATE is still gnome-classic for me :P )

user136984
@Seth: Oh, well I've already closed mine against the other one... You could open mine again though so we can do it the other way if you want. :)

oh.
hmm.
@ParanoidPanda well on second thought I guess yours is kind of a subset of the other one.. but he is asking in generality and you are asking specifics so we can't close his against yours (seems you know that though)
neither has amazing answers though :/
