Question, how are Intel wireless chips with Ubuntu?
Looking at this for reference

@RPiAwesomeness great, afaik.
My last system had an intel chip. Never had a single problem.
well, I had 1 problem when a kernel bug caused wireless to stop working.
That was fixed pretty fast though.

That's what I have now. It occasionally will stop working, but I think it's age
Only thing that has me worried is that it's an HP.
I've heard they aren't terribly reliable

I'm related to an HP tech so I see a lot of HP.
It's not great, but $/bang is just about as good as you could possibly get.
@RPiAwesomeness wow that's a screaming deal!
CPU could be a little better for the orig. price, but still screaming.

ikr...but again, I'm worried about reliability
It has to last me minimum of 3 years

like reliability compared to what?
what do you expect to happen?

12:12 AM
I really don't have anything to compare against, I just want it to survive regular use and carting around in backpacks

It should do that just fine.
the new HP touchpads aren't the best though.
(I mean they work, but they're not nice IMO)

Fair enough

FWIW if I had $700 I would get one.

@RPiAwesomeness In my experience intel considers linux a first class OS and typically supports it well.

@JourneymanGeek Awesome.

12:21 AM
HP used to have a reputation for its lowish end products mysteriously failing as soon as the warantee runs out. No idea if that's still the case, if it ever was.

That's kinda what I'm worried about
But, so long as it lasts me the next 3 years I'm fine
Only thing with that one is it's a 17"...might be a bit big

@terdon my mini 11 seems solid so far
@RPiAwesomeness is this for school?

@JourneymanGeek Yes and no

@JourneymanGeek OK, as I said, that was just something I'd heard thrown around. I know the high end HP servers used in my old lab were excellent.

12:26 AM
If its just for school, I would recommend one of those 11/13 inch bay (cherry?) trail netbooks

I'd still recommend Lenovo if you can get one. Great hardware.

It's going to be my laptop from now on for everything, but I need it to last through at least my first two years of college. So in that sense, yes.

11 inches is a good weight for not breaking your back.

I found 14 to be a great compromise. Large enough to use easily, small enough to carry and you can always get a cheap external screen as well.

but 11 inches will break your eyes..

12:27 AM
Not really
10 inches will

@terdon That's kinda what I was hoping to get

and the bay/cherry trail netbooks are super light, cheap and the HP I have has a good keyboard

@RPiAwesomeness Why don't you? Personally, I feel the 17 inch screen defeats the purpose of having a laptop in the first place. That's going to be heavy and cumbersome.

@terdon Because that deal is for a 17" :P

Ah, and that is indeed a good deal.

12:30 AM
@RPiAwesomeness ofc, you could get that Lenovo we talked about for roughly the same price (or a little less).

What @terdon said
Also large laptops often have worse battery life

@Seth Yeah. However, it's not nearly as good

few tradeoffs for Lenovo brand + 15.6" screen.

Oh, thinkpad lenovo or ideapad lenovo?

12:31 AM
Thinkpad

ahh, then its better

Precioussssss

used to love thinkpads before they messed up the keyboards, and I suppose superfish

8GB vs 16 GB (NBD, I've got 8 in my desktop & it's fine), R7 260 vs 850M (NBD, not doing any heavy gaming), 500GB HDD vs 1TB HDD. For $70 less

8 is enough for most use imo

12:32 AM
Yeah

With a thinkpad, you'll be able to look your Apple fan boy friends in the eye and almost match them for hardware quality.

@terdon ohhhh

I might just get that one. Then maybe I can get a mech keyboard :P

@JourneymanGeek Have you tried the new ones? I pseudo typed on one and it wasn't bad. Not as good as the one on my old t450 but not bad.

12:33 AM
@RPiAwesomeness if you don't need the higher end, don't get the higher end

Just wish I could get some form of student discount or something

@terdon I typically hate chicklet keyboards.
There's ONE chicklet keyboard I consider usable. (HP oddly enough)

Yeah, me too. But it felt nice and solid. And it's only slightly chickletted.

@RPiAwesomeness Apple has discounts, but then you'd probably only be down to the price of what you're looking at

As I recall they kept most of the same hardware under the keys so the feel is still very good.

12:34 AM
Chicklet?

@Zacharee1 Yeah, not getting an Apple device. Too much moolah for too little

@Zacharee1 "island" style flat keys, ala apple.

@RPiAwesomeness :p

You're effectively paying for a brand name

as opposed to proper scalloped keys

12:34 AM
Lenovo's chiclet keyboard is pretty nice.
also, it's "chiclet" guys :P

@JourneymanGeek Oh, I hate those. The keys just rip off (and I have cats)
@Seth I thought so
@RPiAwesomeness Beats, anyone?
Funny how they're also owned by Apple

@Zacharee1 Meh, don't use speakers like ever

I have an older (cherry blue) blackwidow

@RPiAwesomeness The only things I would miss is less RAM (easy fix), no backlit keyboard, less HDD space (easy fix).

Yeah
And I can get it for $600 brand new on eBay

12:35 AM
oh and maybe 1 less USB port.

@RPiAwesomeness Well, yes and no. They really, really know how to make hardware. The quality of those things is ridiculous. Yes, the specs you can find for half the price elsewhere but not with that level of excellence in the hardware.

@RPiAwesomeness do it then. Upgrading the HDD and RAM for the $100 shouldn't be too hard.

@terdon True.

esp. if you sell the old parts.

Mind you, I was given a choice between a high end mac and a high end Dell, both for free and I chose the Dell.

12:36 AM
@Seth Yeah
@terdon Curious, why'd you do that?
Linux support?

I choose the Dell too! =)

Wait, I thought chiclet keys were slightly different. I'm fine with the ones you can't get a fingernail under, but the Aspire 5740's keyboard is terrible. It couldn't be easier to just pick one off

I can't type at all on my brother's asus or most macs

@RPiAwesomeness Yeah. I seriously considered switching to OSX but didn't want the hassle. Plus, I knew I was going to install Linux on the damn thing eventually anyway.

I'm gonna wait for black friday just to watch for deals, but I'll watch that ThinkPad.
If I don't see anything better (read cheaper for ~same specs) I'll just grab that ThinkPad

12:49 AM
Do you ever have those "discussions" online where one party says something different from the popular opinion, saying they're right because they're the outlier, but all they can do is repeat on statement and not actually provide any relevant evidence?
Like here (read from that page on): community.verizonwireless.com/thread/…
gurr

At some point, I'd back away slowly

◔_◔
You don't know me. I have to get my point across, but it's hard when the other person(s) just ignore all evidence presented

b.a.c.k. a..w..a..y s...l...o...w...l...y

@ParanoidPanda Yes, I use. I have same problem.
@Zacharee1 o/

Q: If I'm trying out xenial nightly, will apt-get upgrade keep me current?

ffxsamI'm trying out the xenial nightly, and I'm wondering if I have to download a new nightly once in a while to keep up to date, or if running sudo apt-get dist-upgrade will keep me current. (PS: Could someone with a higher rep please make a 16.04 tag?)

@Zacharee1 ( ゚Д゚)

1:17 AM
it isn't specific to a development release. It applies to running a dev. release in general.
Just edit out the xenial specific bits.

Q: It's about Hardware support

Ubuntu WolfI need Help, is this my pc specs, compatible to ubuntu? But the Motherboard Manufacturer website said. http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4492&dl=1&RWD=0#sp I did tried once installing Ubuntu, but since I failed to connect a windows pc and Ubuntu pc via Network, I end up ins...

:] <-- robot smile
@Neil They seem to not know the difference between hardware and software

@Zacharee1 yes

That ain't how networking works

1:23 AM
any one know if it should be flagged or Voted off topic @Ravan

@Neil Already Rinz commented

@kos can we chat for a couple minutes?

1:40 AM
hmm, he's here...

2:11 AM
Someone mentioned Dell and Superfish earlier. It appears that they're up to Lenovo's old tricks with a new variation that's very similar to Superfish.
Heh, there.

2:28 AM
This is why I always do a clean Windows install if I plan on keeping Windows around at all.

Also helps dump any crapware they have installed.

I thought Lenovo made it so Superfish was automatically installed when Windows is

Amen @both of you. I used to have an MSDN subscription and would do a non-OEM install and then I'd install Linux on a partition. For quite a while now, I just install Linux and wipe the Windows OS that came on it. It's sometimes a hassle to get the OS-free version of a laptop but I typically buy whitebox PCs so there's that.
@Zacharee1 I don't know if that was Superfish or not? I'd have to double check. One OEM just recently had it revealed that they were foisting their "support" software onto a clean install - IIRC.

Re: the narkoz hacker-scripts, I have some scripts like that ... wonder if putting them up publicly is more likely to get me a cool job, or hurt me at my current job ;-)
actually I could probably use a twilio script to message my manager to say I'm stuck on the subway, as it's hard to get connection there

2:54 AM
@Zacharee1 Zacharee, I'm new, did I miss a response from you re: Kos?

What do you mean?

I posted a Hello to Kos.......your post immediately followed with hmmmmm he's here.....

3:14 AM
Well he was "seen" 11 seconds beforehand (You can see that by clicking their name)
But he wasn't responding
What did you need help with?

3:24 AM
Anyone seen @Ravan ? I'm wondering what he finds unsatisfactory with my answer here

@hbdgaf you mean @Rinzwind?

3:50 AM
@hbdgaf Hello :)

maybe Ravan would like a worked-out example :D

@Chan-HoSuh Hello :)

@Ravan whaddup

Hey, Its takes time for me to recognize
Nice pic

my pic?

3:54 AM
yup

yeah well the previous one was ancient and made people think I still lived in a dark cave, so I figured a pic that showed I had been outside was better
