He called himself "Jihadi John", though of course that was not his real name.

user136984

@ParanoidPanda Em . . . I think i know what you're referring to, but i haven't heard of him being killed, haven't kept up with the news recently . . . in any case, good ! one stupid terrorist less in the world.

user136984
They bombed him from a drone when he got into his car.

user136984
So they are pretty sure that say that he is dead.

@ParanoidPanda that should kill him.

user136984
9:03 AM
It should unless there was a man hole under the car and a hole in the bottom of the car that he got into before the bombing, but that's very unlikely.

user136984
Can anyone answer my question here?

Q: "Error: BrokenCount > 0" after upgrading packages

Paranoid PandaAfter just running: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade Obviously running the update one first, I got this output: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Calculating upgrade... Done The following packages will be REMOVED libcheese-gtk23 libchee...

@ParanoidPanda have you tried Logging off and on again. i know it sounds silly but try it. if things run fine in terminal. its all good.

@ParanoidPanda that's a synaptics error . . . . right ?
perhaps reinstalling synaptics will do

@ParanoidPanda forget it. It's a temporary problem.
@Serg no, Synaptics isn't installed per default

9:10 AM
Well, i should sleep
i have to wake up at 5 am, and it's 2 am already
I am probably stupid . . . .

And the name is synaptic @Serg :)

@A.B. How do you know so much about package management type of questions ?

@Serg sleep well and you're not stupid
@Serg experience, and never a reinstall in case of a problem with the package system

9:29 AM
@cl-netbox some of your edits really do not improve the post all. Don't abuse your privilege.

@Serg it be 3 am before you know it

9:47 AM
Good morning ! :)
@muru Good morning - please explain ... I don't understand what exactly you mean ... :)

@Ravan yes, indeed! And I'm proud of it! There are tons of reversal badged on the SE network, but on Ask Ubuntu, I'm the only one...

kos
Morning / afternoon / night all. Speaking of ridiculous edits, Y U (=people) APPROVE THESE??? askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/490012

@kos Morning =)

kos
Morning @A.B. :)

10:03 AM
@kos Good morning ! :)

@cl-netbox I rolled back two of your edits. One which worsened the quality of the post sometime ago, and one today on @A.B.'s post, which made no improvement at all.
That's only two that I bothered to check.
If I went hunting, how many others like those will I find?

@muru Thank you - now I understand ... I try to help @A.B. to get more comfortable with English language - I know that I don't improve the content because there is nothing wrong with it - so is not allowed to improve grammar, readabilty, spelling ? :)

@cl-netbox if it were actually an improvement, yes.
What's the improvement here? A.B.'s post was fine as it was.
"You could also use" is a perfectly fine construction, "You also can use" isn't.
The introduction of "being" instead of ", as " is also not that correct - you should have dropped the being altogether: "-regex ... used in @Muru's answer ..." so on.
I'm not looking to discourage you, @cl-netbox, but when changing the form of a sentence, be sure you are improving it. :)

@muru : yes I know I am not perfect - sometimes I make very little changes but often I correct more important things ... so as I am still quite new here : please tell me whether I should stop supporting people to improving their language skills ? :)

@cl-netbox don't stop, but, do improve your own.

10:16 AM
@muru what do you mean - are my posts really that bad ?

@cl-netbox I haven't looked at all your edits - but those two edits weren't that good.

@muru yes okay maybe ... as I said I am NOT perfect at all ... but we all aren't perfect - right ? I am trying to do my best helping others - that is my main intention ... :)

kos
@cl-netbox See how foolish you may look like trying to correct a language that is not your native language (my post) (and good morning :) didn't want to interrupt you guys)

@muru : and by the way ... this discussion is the reason why I completely stopped reviewing posts from the review queue ... I saw people being banned for this ... (even those who did nearly nothing wrong and only wanted to help improving the content of this platform) :)
@kos does this mean that only native english speakers can improve things like these ? - where did I edit your post - which one was it ?

Installing Fedora folks. =)

kos
10:30 AM
@cl-netbox No, I meant that the post I linked was my post (i.e. I was the fool there) :). I meant that sometimes things look wrong to us non-native speakers, but really they're not.

@kos okay ... understand ... :)

kos
:D

@kos, I have changed your answer a little bit, to avoid confusing about "one single commend" =)

@muru : I kindly wanna ask you : what should I learn from this now ? - I am trying my best to contribute something good to this platform - but don't you think that some of our rules have to be less restrictive ? The same thing could be rethought concerning new users that only want to ask something ... :)

@cl-netbox wanting to help is a good thing, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

kos
10:42 AM
@A.B. Thanks, but I think it's better to run a single command, isn't it?

@kos you mean a single line =)
but, yes, you're right. A single line is better for copy and paste
anyway, it's a good answer

@muru okay ... so I better should stop editing ? Do you agree with me that the quality of everybody's edits are discussable ?

"Do you agree with me that the quality of everybody's edits are discussable ?" We're not talking of everybody's edits, but yours. Do you understand that?
Do you also understand what I wrote earlier:
29 mins ago, by muru
@cl-netbox don't stop, but, do improve your own.

kos
@A.B. I don't want to be pedantic, really, so forgive me for this, but in language theory multiple statements = a statement. So technically multiple commands = a command. It's not really wrong :)

If your answer to either is "no", then I suggest you stop editing.

10:45 AM
ok =)

@kos Damn straight! Why not? The "How to do this" syntax is wrong.

@kos I forgive you :D

@muru you have to know that I am always trying to improve my own things first ! :)

Good for you!

kos
@terdon Sorry what is the "How to do this" you're referencing?

10:48 AM
Please understand that I am not here to getting into trouble with anyone ... :)

@kos The review linked to in the message I am replying to. Someone very correctly changed "How to X" to "How do I do X" and you called that a ridiculous edit. It isn't. It corrected a grammar problem.

@kos some suggested edit you posted about a while ago

kos
@terdon Not arguing, it's not my main language, I'm just quite puzzled. You mean that "How to restrict an user to a specific desktop environment?" is a wrong construct?

@kos It is when it is a question, yes. It would be correct as a statement: "This is how to restrict a user", but not "How to restrict a user?"
It is very popular because of the many HowTo posts online. People have assumed that that is how to phrase a question but it isn't.

kos
@terdon Ah yes, but it wasn't a question before the edit. Ok probably I overlooked the fact that it should have been phrased as a question, fair enough.

10:56 AM
Yes, that construct only makes sense as a header for an answer, it has no place in a question.

kos
When someone says something like what I'm gonna say when he's wrong it always looks like he's trying to minimize his error. I swear I'm not, my bad on that edit. In a completely unrelated fashion, since we're talking about that, tons of questions have that problem.

Does anybody here know a wildberry.thomas2?
I very strongly doubt that, but could it be @ThomasW. ?
Just got a skype contact request from that person...
I declined. If he's not a spammer, he will find other ways to contact me again.

@kos I know. I tend to fix that but I can't get all of them. It is a classic mistake made by non-natives. Still, there are may far worse ones around.

kos
@terdon Also that mistake in particular, but I meant question titles phrased as statements in general. "X doesn't work", "I can't install Y", etc

@kos That's a different issue. That's OK, questions don't absolutely need to be actual questions. They can also be statements. What they can't be is How to X since that is not actually a statement (unless the post is a howto and we don't do those here) but a badly phrased question.

kos
11:17 AM
Yeah, it's rather a topic. Another mistake deriving from being used to forums, I guess.
@terdon By the way have you seen this? meta.unix.stackexchange.com/questions/3714/…. I know you're not entitled to know Stack Exchange's copyright policies, but just in case you incidentally dealt with similar stuff already.

@kos Yeah, I upvoted the question and Derobert's answer. I didn't answer myself because I agree 100% with Derobert. You may as well wait for an SE employee to weigh in but I very much doubt they'll mind.

kos
@terdon Ok, thanks. I doubt that as well. It just seemed right to ask.

Sure, better safe than sorry.

kos
Exactly. :)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but "too localized" doesn't seem to be an issue anymore. Is that correct? If so I think this one should be reopened: askubuntu.com/questions/691435/install-ubuntu-on-asus-laptop

11:45 AM
Is it normal that a CRT monitor flickers when you hit it (or the table it stands on) softly?

@ByteCommander no, not really
A cold solder joint.

kos
@ByteCommander How softly? I think mine did the exact same thing, but not for soft hits.

Well, I can't express it in Newton or anything...
How should I describe it?
Hitting a side leads to stronger flickering than the top though.

when it does that the soldering is letting go. Time to get a new one ;)
Go for a flat screen this time. Those do not have that problem :+

11:55 AM
I mean it doesn't flicker like going off and on, but flickering in the meaning that there are horiznotal distortions in the picture for a moment @Rinzwind @A.B.

@ByteCommander Hmmm, no idea

About similar to if you place a mobile phone next to it.

I understand. Back in the 80s we used to toss them in the bin when that happened ;) @ByteCommander
or maybe it was the 90s :=)

Awww.... but it's so nicely big - and I don't really want to spend much on a replacement with similar screen size.

it wont beat what I use for gaming ;-)

11:57 AM
I don't really game on that one...

He folks, only two =)

hi guys

back to disgaea 5 :=) 3 more chapters to go and I enter post-game carnage

@Seth how can bash is on-topic and not C programs? none of them are specific to Ubuntu and both of them languages?

@ByteCommander Umm... Why are you hitting your poor monitor? :-)

12:10 PM
@edwardtorvalds bash is a shell and native to Linux. C is a coding language. coding languages have their own stack site :=) shells do not
something along those lines.

@Rinzwind commenting on "C is a coding language. coding languages have their own stack site :=) shells do not" that means since we have Unix and Linux there is no need of AskUbuntu

Oh, not this again!!!
4

@kos thanks but just suggest bash is ontopic?

kos
What do you mean? It explains the reasoning behind it.
@edwardtorvalds "Shell scripting is an essential part of administering (and using, really) a Linux system. Including Ubuntu."

Q: How can bash question is on-topic and C programming off-topic?

edward torvaldsI have read this answer it suggests that Bash questions are on-topic since it helps in administration. Keeping this in mind, C programming questions too should be on-topic. Since is mostly used to write Ubuntu. More importantly we can use C to write services and routine. To me it sounds like the...

please read it completely before we fight :)

kos
@edwardtorvalds Ah, sorry. I meant that shell scripting is on-topic because it's essential. C is not, you can live with compiled programs.

@kos C is more essential since we wrote bash shell in it :)
@kos I dont think interpreted vs compiled language makes sense if we compare them in context of ubuntu :)
both of them are language

kos
@edwardtorvalds It's not about making a formal definition of what is on-topic and what is off-topic. You can't have one in this case. We just keep things that we want and don't keep things we don't want.

@edwardtorvalds there

@KGIII I was hitting the table. Then I saw that this produces distortions in the monitor. then I hit it again to check... :P

12:24 PM
@ByteCommander Well, if it keeps it up, hit it again. Threaten it with a hammer if it gets really out of line.

It behaves currently.

That's no fun.

@ByteCommander looks like your CRT dyeing.

I should probably just stop hitting it or the table...

hitting it not going to solve you problem.

12:28 PM
I wonder if it would help if you put it on a folded towel to cushion blows and make your monitor last a little longer?

@KGIII seems like a fire hazard.

I'd kind of doubt that the bottom of a monitor would get hot enough to cause combustion? The heat's radiated and naturally goes out of the top. I do not have a CRT to check this with.

france last night :(

use to have a CRT when it dyed it left burn marks on the table is was siting on.

That's a definitely strange death for a CRT. :/ I've never seen that.

@KGIII well it happened.

Oh I believe you, it's just strange.

@AskUbuntuMeta You're late

@GeoMint I've seen it live in the news. So sorry for all those people.

i hope it is the last terrorist attack

@kos : I can't see the image you inserted : askubuntu.com/questions/697301/…

@cl-netbox Hover on it

AAHH

kos
However I didn't insert it :)

1:14 PM
Who did ? ... and was the hovering made intentionally ?

@cl-netbox yes, I have seen like answers in Puzzles site

@Ravan Hello ! :)

@cl-netbox o/

@Ravan Did you insert it ?

nope

kos
1:16 PM
@cl-netbox A.B. inserted it, I think you're looking at the head of the second edit, which is mine

@kos Anyway - nice idea ! =)

@ByteCommander I don't randomly invite people on skype. I get fifty spam reqs
@ByteCommander the skype I use is not that one

@ThomasW. I assumed that, but wasn't sure. I've declined the invitation already. Thanks for confirming.

kos
@cl-netbox Yes, to make that answer longer still not including an actual content. :)

@kos Does placing it into a spoiler make any sense if that empty are has the same size as the content?

1:19 PM
@kos HAHAHA =)

Ah, I did not know >! triggers a spoiler area. Learned something today. :)

what is Ubuntu unity login screen is called?
light-locker for Gnome

kos
@Ravan It's called Unity Greeter

thanks =)

kos
But it "runs on top of lightdm"
@Ravan However maybe you're looking for lightdm, which is the display manager; Unity Greeter is just a GUI for lightdm

1:34 PM
o/ @Serg

@edwardtorvalds not true, askubuntu has a specific audience connected to Canoncal + Ubuntu. We are an official support medium. U+L has not connection to Canonical + Ubuntu and is not an official support medium

Is my answer correct or did I make mistakes? askubuntu.com/a/697928/367990 (upvotes also appreciated, of course ;D )

+1 for comprehensive ans @Byte

Thanks.

kos
@ByteCommander You can haz one.

kos
2:08 PM
@Ravan You can haz one too.

haha
:)
I really don't like if someone compare Ubuntu and WIn

It's very well possible to compare them, but not in a rant like that one is.

@ByteCommander yeah, I mean with rants

You can compare individual differences. For example, on the mentioned subject of program freezes, the solution on Windows is pretty simple if you've done it enough times. Simply press Ctrl+Alt-Del, wait for the logon screen to appear, click "Task Manager", wait for Task Manager to load, go navigate through the list to find the offending application, right-click and choose "End Application" or whatever it's called. Then click "Yes" when you're asked "Are you sure?"
On Linux you use xkill and click the offending application window. Boom. Offending application terminated.

@ByteCommander good morning ! I've arrived at work, and connected to the interwebz

2:24 PM
morning =)
@Serg Hello bro :)

@Brandin even awesomer thing that can be done is to bind xkill to a shortcut
@Ravan hi, how are you ?

fine =)
I decided to change my avatar
in SE

@Serg Hello sir ! =)

Oh ? @Ravan change to what ? and only in SE ?
@cl-netbox o/

@Serg I mean in AU (SE sites)

2:26 PM
@Serg everything alright ? =)

@Ravan Can't see any change yet...

@cl-netbox kind of . . . Because I dropped one out of two classes I had, now I have no work-study money, yesterday got email about that, so it's official. So now I don't know what to do - I am at work but don't know if I should clock in or not

@ByteCommander changed :)

@Ravan what are you going to change it to ?

but not appearing in chat
@Serg my real pic

user136984
Oh dear... This really is leading up to WW3 isn't it?

@RAvan yeah, I see it now ! Handsome guy hehe

@Serg what does this mean : no work-study money ... ?

@ParanoidPanda Let's hope it doesn't. But frankly, if ISIS wants war, that wish should be granted to them and just . . . well . . I don't wanna be too graphic in my description . . .just kill 'em all

@ParanoidPanda Hope not - but I don't think so ...

2:30 PM
@cl-netbox in the US you can apply for work-study money - to work at university while being a student. It's kind of government support for students. I work at my university because of that.

@Serg shit ! - is there an alternative for you - a side job or something like this ?

@cl-netbox yes, basically

user136984
@Serg I agree, I think the West should officially declare war on them and put troops on the ground in Syria and other places where they are.

user136984
This is going too far, we need to act now before it gets any further.

user136984
2:33 PM
But if they attack us through terrorism then that is much harder to combat.

@ParanoidPanda Hello :)

That link ^ very probable , Russia has little anti-terrorism efforts

@Serg "little"?

@Ravan Don't see anything yet.

@Ravan well, there's some special forces in Russia, but . . . as a whole, it's not as good as in the US . . .

2:35 PM
US is in first place in terms of Army

@ByteCommander looks like he changed it back again ?

@ByteCommander just changed back

Aha...

@Serg yes

user136984
I wish that all those who support IS would just go to Syria and get out of our countries so we could have a straight out fight with them rather than trying to fight the enemy within.

user136984
2:37 PM
Because you really don't know who's who.

@ParanoidPanda The problem is just that the know this and take advantage of it.

user136984
@ByteCommander: Then what are we going to do?

user136984
They are basically the Nazis of today.

@ParanoidPanda Their leaders and main bases are in the middle east, not in Europe.The governments and military at least could take care of that. The anonymous were taking down the twitters of ISIS supporters and I think governments should take active role in that - limit their exposure on the web as well . But for the physically present ones . . .it's hard to say

user136984
2:42 PM
One of the problems though where I am (UK) is that it's actually legal to be a Nazi, and to support IS openly.

@Serg java
homework?

@RAvan Seems like homework AND it's off - topic here, not about ubuntu

user136984
People like that should be arrested, we are being tolerant of those who are spreading intolerance and are intolerant of us. We should not tolerate those who are intolerant of us. If we are tolerant of them then they will kill us and get rid of tolerance.

user136984
We have to draw the line somewhere, we can't be tolerant of all.

I'm pretty sure even in the UK if you support IS in some concrete way, like funneling money to them, you will be investigated and detained indefinitely
if by support, you mean saying things vocally, well there's freedom of speech

2:53 PM
heh
my avatar changed in chat

@Ravan Yeey, handsome guy picture is back

3:21 PM
Final off-topic close vote appreciated here: askubuntu.com/q/697942/367990

@ByteCommander done

Thanks.

I suspect that guy doesn't know how to set the classpath :/
well, I haven't investigated this issue, so I might be wrong. But I think when people say stuff like these groups are just roaming free, I think they are mistaken

3:30 PM
@ByteCommander uhg, OP wants to process two files with awk, based on one of the files' data . . .not very suitable for AWK, but will try

3:46 PM
hm I wasted like half an hour before I realized this was a bug: github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/4651

4:14 PM
@Serg awk o_O

@Serg +1 =)

4:26 PM
@ParanoidPanda I'll tell you here so we don't bug Seth.
@Serg Come into the other room and I'll be happy to explain the fundamental flaws in that comparison.

 Paris, Friday 13th

Discussion about the horrible terrorism in Paris on Friday, No...
Hey, I just created a specific one @terdon

OK, let's take it there.

@Seth You may move the current messages there if you want.

@terdon afaik no meta post, just historical precedent. We tend to always be more on the on-topic side anyway and (at least used to) get lots of support requests.

A: Installation problem - dual boot with W10 on Win certified laptop

cl-netboxThis was a long journey ... an answer in progress … and now finally … here is the answer ! What you want is - more or less – a complete instruction on how to install Ubuntu alongside Windows. Please stay tuned - I will give you all advice necessary to get everything running! So let's start … ...

@A.B. Yep, that's a pretty nice boost. CL might even reach 10k before me with that! :D

4:50 PM
@terdon How would I match a tab in sed?
\t matches all whitespace.. Can I match just a tab?

@Seth No it doesn't.

wat did I just read then

$ printf ' space\n'$'\t''tab\n' | sed 's/\t/foo/'
 space
footab

huh
okay then.
What I read was wrong. Thanks!

@Seth Were you maybe thinking of \s?

4:56 PM
@terdon now that you mention it I remember it, but I was just reading this:
> ^[ \t]* : Search pattern ( ^ - start of the line; [ \t]* match one or more blank spaces including tab
ohhh
I'm an idiot.
Now I see there is a space in that search pattern.

5:44 PM

Night folks!

@HeatherBrown 23 seconds.

user139252
@Seth Where do you live? (Just a general state/country is fine)

@HeatherBrown State of Washington, US.

user139252
Okay, so it should be faster, then... I'm going to have to talk to Verizon...

user139252
I just upgraded to them, only one to have their service in my apartment complex right now, and I'm paying for the 300 Mb/s (up and down) package.

6:18 PM
wow
I didn't know they offered anything so fast.

user139252
If my server is hooked directly into the modem and not connected through a router, it should not be taking this long to establish a connection from WA.

where I live the only option is Comcast :/

user139252
They offer up to 500 Mb/s on their FiOS system here.

nice.

user139252
My down-speed is just fine, things are loading near instantaneously and my torrent of Ubuntu Wily took only about 45 seconds... But I noticed that anything coming from my server was way too slow...

6:42 PM
Meanwhile, those of us with 1 Mbps connections...
