Just from command line is there anyway to find out which network manager I am using?

@edwardtorvalds which network manager?

@A.B. the one that handles my network connections

@edwardtorvalds have you changed your network manager ?

@Serg No
just asking

If no, you're using the default one . . .

7:04 PM
@Serg I'll play around with the gdm conf a bit more before giving up, but I'll keep your offer in mind :)

cool

@Serg I am wondering how can I find which one I am using?

@edwardtorvalds well, there's couple of ways . . .you can check which service is running, or you could check ps output

can you show me how?
Does anybody knows which program debian uses to manage network?

@edwardtorvalds give me a minute

7:12 PM
ok

[ SmokeDetector ] Bad keyword in body: How ToBreaks Down Stored Fat Now? by phyllisxim on askubuntu.com

7:26 PM
@edwardtorvalds what Ubuntu do you have ? 14.04 ?

Oh . . . .So you could do systemctl | grep -i network
and see if network-manager service is running.
You can also do pidof NetworkManager
if you have installed wicd , for example, you could do the same, check pidof wicd

not talking about ubuntu, in general, if you get this service: networking.service
to which package it belongs?

Note, that it doesn't matter if you use two network managers. My wifi card is connected right now, and it shows up as connected in both wicd, and NetworkManager
networking.service is one of the init scripts

7:33 PM
It's not really a package
well . . . .not a package at all . . . like i said, it's a script . . .
but it is ran by systemd . . .so . . .i guess you could say it belongs to systemd package

@Serg can you answer about debian?

@edwardtorvalds no, I've never used debian

ok
@Rinzwind there?

yes waiting for doctor who :=)
@StefanoPalazzo BOUNTY! Award it!

@Rinzwind can you answer questions about debian?

7:40 PM
what is debian? >:)

really ? <.< @Rinzwind

@Rinzwind done :)

@StefanoPalazzo :D
@Serg :D *2
it could be what he was going to ask :P

user136984
Been in that other room too long... :P

@Rinzwind its not my question, you should comment/answer on that post, he is a new linux user

already did :=)
But in case you want the rep go for it ;-)

user136984
@Rinzwind: Who is the extremely beautiful girl in the black and white here? Is she the lead singer?

7:55 PM
@Rinzwind first I need to understand what is going on in that link, he is talking about SD card, and the question is on ssd

@ParanoidPanda at what moment in the video? The people in white in the back are the band itself

user136984
It's in the middle somewhere.

user136984
She is singing by herself.

I am back . . .on windoze now

user136984

I'd probably be a horrible father, though . . .

user136984
@Rinzwind: How old is she?

ehm
EVER HEARD OF BLOODY GOOGLE? >:)
she's born in 1999. 16 atm.
In Holland the government would be all over her parents demanding her to stop :X
Not allowed here for <18 to have a career in music.

user136984
What's the oldest called?

8:08 PM
I assume it's easier to ask you @Rinzwind since you seem to have all the details readily at hand

user136984
@Serg: So, who in that band do you think is the most beautiful? :P

@ParanoidPanda I'd adopt them all 3 :+)
@Chan-HoSuh yeah what I hate about it; WHERE IS MY REP for answering?
@ParanoidPanda weird. google lists TWO artists.

@Rinzwind your karmic unit total has increased by r_gamma(3)

she is more cute -> Moa Kikuchi 4 july 1999 (16)
ah funny. she is also in the other band.

I think Serg and I are going to stay off this topic :)

user136984
8:11 PM
I really like Suzuka Nakamoto, I think she is the most beautiful.

fine we go back on topic :=)
4 more minutes for doctor who so...I am out soon >:)

user136984
Though the black and white one does look like a cute baby bird.

@Chan-HoSuh <.< are we ? Oh, man . . .alright . . . .I'll just say they're all cute . . .

in the other band they are dressed as "chefs" >:)

user136984
:D

8:12 PM
(mini-patissier is that band)

I was about to write a lengthy comment on that topic but . . .meh . . . .

lol
ok gone till DW is done

user136984
@Serg: You know though that Chinese girls expect you to know Java, Japanese ones will teach it to you.

user136984
Oh god, what am I talking about here...? :D

O.o . . . .

user136984
8:14 PM
It seems that @Serg has some sort of infectious disease that he has given me... Because I don't normally talk so much about this topic... :P

@ParanoidPanda I didn't know java spreads as virus

user136984
:D

Eh,,,,frankly never came in contact with Japanese girls . . . I've been hanging around Chinese and Vietnamese girls for the most part . . .
Also some korean girls, but still way way fewer than Chinese . . .even though Denver has large Korean population here . . .

user136984
Japanese ones are better, trust me, they will make you nice food teach you Java.

user136984
;)

8:17 PM
Rant mode engaged I'm an independent man who don't need no woman to make me no food or teach me java ! I can do everything by myself !
(not really, I cannot cook )

user136984
Then how come you quit that Java class?

user136984
:P

@ParanoidPanda because of my professor ! She had harsh grading standards. Not just me, half the class quit, the other half is pissed off and even wrote a petition letter to her,demanding grades to be revised

user136984
:D

user136984
@Serg: Exactly why you should let the Japanese girl teach you instead, she is much nicer and understanding.

user136984
8:20 PM
Plus she makes you nice food at the same time.

AdBlockPlus is not doing a good job today

Asian female stereotype: submissive and nicer and understanding . . ..
My best friend, who's Guangzhou girl, is far from that. . . we argue all the time. . .And frankly I love it . . . Sigh . . .well, we'd make a nice couple . . . perhaps in the next life

user136984
@Serg: That's how they lure you into their trap, nice food, and that stereotype. And then once they've got you, if you stray away from Java... Well, let's just not go there...

lol, sure
@ParanoidPanda well, I don't have problem with Java . . . I have problem with professors . . . So, I should be good next semester . . . And then once I know Java , I take over the world ! evil laugh -__- not really

user136984
I like professors! They're like big fat cuddly Pandas! :D

8:28 PM
Java's good, especially if you need to deal with concurrency in a transparent manner, but I think these functional programming languages are better for a lot of the hot jobs now

gtg, lunch time
Buh bye

user136984
@Serg: Bye!

user136984
@Chan-HoSuh: And hot girls in @Serg's case. :P

8:51 PM
@ParanoidPanda Speaking of hot girls, there's one girl that is studying computer science . . .She's doing C++ right now. Totally hot. But there's the catch : she's in China ... . . miles away . . . and probably has a boyfriend . . . .So . . . im out of luck again

user136984
@Serg: That's weird, what you said got flagged up... :D

Aye.
I got the flag (blue circle) and came over to see some context

user136984
@Hennes: Please tell me you didn't mark it as valid... And that's the reason why he's suddenly gone silent... :D

I have not marked it at all yet. I was reading scrollback
I do not blindy accept a flag without knowing the context or the settings of the room.
And some places are strict, and some are, was Server Fault comms room 'raw'

user136984
Me neither, but often by the time I've come to the room and read the context the flag is gone.

user136984
9:04 PM
@Hennes: I see you are an irrational number by the way, shouldn't only rational numbers be validating flags? :P

Just square me to make me rational

hmm, note to self: when naming a framework, call it something catchy like "BeautifulSoup" not "lxml".

XMLsoup ?

user136984
:D

XMLicious !

9:15 PM
@Hennes Let's talk about The Bridge ;) point taken
@Chan-HoSuh I like BS4.

me too ... but I read some dude's blog post where he pointed out how much better lxml is :/
which made me wonder if it's because of the name and the humorous commentary in the code that made me hold on to it

I've heard lxml is lighter. When I looked at it though, it seemed less elegant. Not saying I'm switching to ruby, because it's an elegant art form worth of coding... but I tried to use both, and I just liked BS4 more

yeah, I think for me I don't need the C-level performance
how's Ruby adoption going? I haven't heard much about it for a while

Q: What to do with potentially dangerous answers?

Paranoid PandaI was just wondering, what should one do with potentially dangerous answers? I mean I have read before on Meta that I should just flag them up, however when I did so for this one I just got this: declined - flags should not be used to indicate technical inaccuracies, or an altogether wrong answe...

user136984
I tell you, today has been a really strange day...

9:22 PM
:)

@ParanoidPanda that's because of Friday the 13th . . .residual weirdness

@Chan-HoSuh The die hard guys are using it. It's still the hipster thing to use for webapps wtih rails... but aside from hipsters and metasploit, I think it's sort of die-ing.

user136984
Yes, and that argument that we had today in here (well half in here, half in the other place) just made things feel weirder...

Argument... what did I miss? Or are you going to make me read the transcript...

user136984
@hbdgaf: Most of it's in here.

9:26 PM
religion. nevermind.

user136984
Well, it started more with politics and terrorism.

user136984
Then it kind of got in a bit deeper...

Nothing news here. These kinds of attacks are normal and happen weekly (if not more often).
This one is just closer to home.

in that sense, nothing is news, as it has all happened before somewhere. Context determins what makes something news

user136984
9:40 PM
@j0h: I've always thought that your profile picture is rather odd, what is it? :D

user136984
Right, well anyway, been an odd day!

Goodnight! :)

Q: Does linux mint use the ubuntu repos or their own repos?

Trevor Boyd SmithI prefer the cinnamon desktop included with Linux Mint but there are some applications that I require that are in the ubuntu repos. Does linux mint use the ubuntu repos or their own repos? I know you can install Cinnamon on top of Ubuntu (that's what I have right now) but installing Cinnamon on...

@Chan-HoSuh True. But Beiruts bombing was rather recent.
(BBC is always nice as a link source)
Not that that is any excuse for the Paris bombings.

The result will be that France will start fighting in the middle east.
And they are worse than Russia to deal with.

9:49 PM
Maybe. Maybe not. I have no idea what will happen or what should have happened.
I just realise that whatever we did was wrong.
Too much war.

But if there is any good solution? Maybe there are only less bad ones.
Meh. Too tired for these kind of thoughts.

10:48 PM
PSA: What I thought was X-Swat forcing X crashes and logout was really a memory leak related to the graphics adapter in chromium. I decided to try Chrome just for kicks, and no more crashes. So... the problem was chromium not X-Swat

hey @Hennes. Been a while since I've seen you here :)

@blade19899 Just install one driver and if it works, hold it! Don't update them all the time... and if you run into nVidia prolems, just ask @cl-netbox: he's even better at nVidia then me!

A: result of ps -ef | grep?

Sergps doesn't show network ports, at least not to my knowledge. The more appropriate command to use is netstat or lsof. For instance, if I want to see whether or not my ssh server is listening on port 22, I can do this: xieerqi@eagle:~$ sudo netstat -tulpan | grep ":22" [sudo] password for xieerqi...

OP is confusing me

The virtual interface should work just like a normal interface, right ?

I honestly don't know. I'm not very good with networking.
I get nervous editing network config. files.

What's the worse that could ^#&^$*#$^*#^$*NOCARRIER

@JourneymanGeek excuse me what ?

11:46 PM
woo, got my new screen in :)

@Serg I demand thee vacate my well groomed field of grass
(its a really oldschool joke)
@Mateo: whatchabuy?

^_^ ' ' I think I'm too young to comprehend that NOCARRIER joke . . .

@Mateo ooo, does Ubuntu look pretteh in it ? Does it have pretteh colors ?

NO CARRIER (capitalized) is a text message transmitted from a modem to its attached device (typically a computer), indicating the modem is not (or no longer) connected to a remote system. NO CARRIER is a response message that is defined in the Hayes command set. Due to the popularity of Hayes modems during the heyday of dial-up connectivity, most other modem manufacturers supported the Hayes command set. For this reason, the NO CARRIER message was ubiquitously understood to mean that one was no longer connected to a remote system. == Carrier tone == A carrier tone is an audio carrier signal used...
lol
Does it pass the disapproving mom test?

I'm guessing it's 24 inches in the diagonal

Picture quality is quite Solanum tuberosum ;p

@JourneymanGeek well, low light and phone camera...

11:53 PM
Not bad, not bad . . .39.5" 3840X2160

I was looking at something similar by crossover for a second screen
how is it?
4k is <3
Even if there's not much that's 4k around

Once I get home, I'll show off my external screen as well . . . Which is old . . . :D

I need to clear up my desktop before I take a pic ;p

very nice, I like it so far

I'm assuming its connected over dp?

11:55 PM
like the size too, because it is as long as a ultra wide, but taller and less expensive ;)

@JourneymanGeek yep

I think I spent ~500 usd on mine
but its a dell so... bit of a premium there
(and IPS and so on)

Time to clock the f out
