A: Command equivalents of Unity keyboard shortcuts

kosYou can do it using xdotool. To install the tool, run this command in a terminal: sudo apt-get install xdotool Then you can start a test in a terminal: xdotool key Ctrl+Alt+<keypad_number>

:P ;)
I don't like "command line"

kos
@A.B. I won't give up I'm telling you :)
@A.B. Please leave it like that, that's how I find it more clear
@A.B. I format commands like that so that one immediately recognize them as such

user136984
How do you report a bug with apport again?

user136984
What command is it?

user136984
Wait...

user136984
Never mind...

6:53 PM
@kos sorry :)
@kos I was just a little cocky.

Docker really doesn't play nice with multiple base images.

Q: install windows8 over ubuntu.

doniyorI have at the moment ubuntu 15.04. I want to remove it and install windows 8. I copied windows 8 iso file into USB Stick and inserted into laptop and put USB STICK to the first place in boot list. and restarted the laptop, it is coming what am I doing wrong?

7:13 PM
@A.B. No problem, the last line was really unuseful and you did the right thing by removing it to not unusefully clutter the post
@A.B. Sometimes I'm a little obsessive in using the same exact pattern for my posts

Personally, I avoid using < and > since, if copy/pasted, they can have very unfortunate effects. Italicizing command names makes no sense though, especially when the same command is in backticks on the next line.

Italics is for English, not code.

How many hours does an upgrade take if you are upgrading 14.10 to 15.04? Would it take an hour? Or more?

@Toroidal impossible to answer. it depends largely on your hardware and internet connection
and the server used for the upgrade

user136984
So how would I be able to tell? Would I just have to do it and see?

basically yes. on my machine the last update van 700Mb and took 9 minutes

user136984
Van?

user136984
Where?

user136984
7:42 PM
A white van?

user136984

user136984
What exactly is prelink?

user136984
7:59 PM
I just installed it...

user136984
And have no idea what it is other than it speeds something up!

user136984
And I only got it because rkhunter nagged me about it... :D :P

@Tim Like the Italian Company that made Generators:
PowerGenItalia.com
@Toroidal No clue, but when you find out, let me know...
;-)

kos
@Fabby Are you Italian by any chance?

user136984
@Fabby:

Most programs require libraries to function. Libraries can be integrated into a program once, by a linker, when it is compiled (static linking) or they can be integrated when the program is run by a loader, (dynamic linking).

user136984
Dynamic linking has advantages in code size and management, but every time a program is run, the loader needs to find the relevant libraries. Because the libraries can move around in memory, this causes a performance penalty, and the more libraries that need to be resolved, the greater the penalty.

user136984
Prelink reduces this penalty by using the system's dynamic linker to reversibly perform this linking in advance ("prelinking" the executable file) by relocating. Afterward, the program only needs to spend time finding the relevant libraries on being run if, for some reason (perhaps an upgrade), the libraries have changed since being prelinked.

user136984

user136984
That is about prelink.

user136984
So it's probably rather a useful thing to have for the sake of performance...

8:07 PM
@kos Half Italian...
@Toroidal Looks cool! :-)
reading the original...

kos
@terdon Yes I agree, I should probably start formatting differently. I always check commands before using them, but I agree that it's easy to make people mess something up
@Fabby The reference to powergenitalia.com was suspicious in fact :) full Italian here

@kos It was about 15 years ago. They went out of business in the mean time...
@kos I should tell you some time about my stay in Milan a few years back...
Not today though... ;-)
@NathanOsman: how's Vivid? What do you use on your production system?

kos
@Fabby Sure, I'll be happy to hear :)

8:39 PM
@Fabby: by production, do you mean servers?
If so, I'm still using Trusty.
I'll be upgrading my desktop to Vivid soon enough.

9:09 PM
anyone used an mp3 player you can listen to under water?

nope.. But I think Speedo makes one.

thanks, but i'm looking for first person use cases.

9:56 PM
Well, I have successfully (I think) upgraded from 14.10 to 15.04! :) And all is well so far! No bugs yet, but I love the new design!

user136984
10:14 PM
How do I install Chromium?

user136984
Is it just available in one of the repositories, or...?

user136984
If someone does reply to that please do ping me...

user136984
As otherwise I probably won't get your reply. ;)

@Toroidal The package is called chromium-browser.
@Toroidal new design?

10:33 PM
@hbdgaf Wasn't one of the Galaxy phones IP67-certified?
That guarantees it against water ingression up to 1m.

Uh, anyone out there?

Yeah...

No..

I don't remember. I'm just looking for specific sound while the rest of the noise is gone. Someone made that possible - so it's back to cooking.

@NathanOsman S4 I believe.
But it might have been the 5.

10:40 PM
Forgive me for not having any faith in "might have been waterproof..."

aha, Galaxy S4 Active

@hbdgaf As someone who took a 100m water-resistant watch into about 1 foot of water and instantly had the screen go blank, I sympathize.
Granted, I had replaced the battery, which probably affected the seal a bit.

Huh, and the GS5.
lol the new GS6 commercials are nice.
