@Darth_Vader Regexes are nice because they work across a lot of programming languages / commands, but here something bash native would be probably be better if you're concerned with performance

@KasiyA I think that is a calculation of how many people have viewed a question or answer

how do - how large are peoples / partition and how much is on there? My / is 57.2GB and I have 44GB on it

103G 15G Used 83G Free
@baxx Why is this interesting?

kos
3:30 PM
120GB SSD + 500GB external for storage, 69% and 33%

@baxx it's a SSD

@baxx 60GB HDD. 39G thereof for Ubuntu, 30G thereof full... :P

@A.B. cool, well interest is subjective and all.... I was curious as to how much others stored on there though, 44GB seemed like quite a large root, wasn't sure if something was up with that I guess
@kos so you have everything on / rather than separate /home?

@baxx And a 1,5TB HDD

@ByteCommander that's just your / partition then?

3:33 PM
@baxx for /home

@A.B. cool.

Only my box is old
4GB RAM, Intel® Coreā„¢2 Duo CPU E8200 @ 2.66GHz × 2

@baxx I only use / and swap, so yes, 39GB is /

kos
@baxx Everything stuffed in it, it's a laptop so I might not have the 500GB external around
@baxx On the main machine also, but it's a 750GB HDD

But a SSD is great. =)

kos
3:43 PM
Yep, about 5 second to boot to Desktop

Yeah SSD would be nice!
I'm just wondering whether my / partition is a bit bloated / abused
with 44GB in it.

Sometimes I would have liked more memory.
@baxx to many kernel? ;)

@A.B. umm no, don't think I've changed kernel since I installed Ubuntu, it's 14.04
Linux geoHP 3.13.0-49-generic

dpkg --list | grep linux-image

3:54 PM

@baxx Time to clean up =)

Anybody knows how to convert swf to animated gif?

@A.B. seems so :) I've just found a backup think that was written to /mnt by accident (drive must not have been connected) so I deleted that which freed up 32GB
@kos is that a fairly safe procedure what's listed there?

kos
@baxx Totally, 1. it removes the dependencies not more needed by any program installed, e.g. if you installed x wich required y and the removed x, it will remove y if not needed. 2. As safe as 1, because it deletes the stored .deb of y 3. This is the last resort, because logs might be useful, but sometimes they take lots of space. Anyway it's safe to delete them, you won't be able to check them afterwards tough
@baxx Also if you fear that 1 might delete something it shouldn't for mistake run sudo apt-get install -f to make sure that you still have everything you need installed

4:05 PM
@A.B. I tried swfextract, but it says the file does not contain pngs.

@kos cheers - apt-get install -f after running these steps?

@ByteCommander I've never done that.

@kos first step was already clean :)
@kos second step took some stuff off though :) cheers

@ByteCommander or this? alternativeto.net/software/qgifer

@A.B. Does not tell at least once that it handles swf.

I extracted 203 PNGs from a SWF and have them in a folder. How do I create an animated GIF out of PNG 73-203 of them?

@ByteCommander FFMPEG/AVConv would be your best bet

And they have to be sorted naturally and not ASCII-wise.

Currently trying to get the Ubuntu dots without the white background, but GIMP seems to be being ornery.
Also. Why on earth do the Ubuntu designers have their images as GIFs on the site...why not PNGs? o.O

@ByteCommander find | sort --version-sort

5:02 PM
What does anyone think?
It would be a mouse pad
I think the dots are a bit too bright

@RPiAwesomeness Hard to say

Lighter dots
Or rather, darker
Not much

@A.B. You know the command to convert them?

@NathanOsman \o/
You're the one I am looking for! :)
PNGs --> animated GIF?

5:14 PM
@ByteCommander eg: convert -delay 10 -loop 0 inputfiles*.png animaion.gif

@A.B. And the sort problem?

ImageMagick is your friend
ok, give me a second

@ByteCommander You bet.
Basically what @A.B. said.

And --delay only works for the first frame I heard.

I need 200 png =)
ok 20
or 10

5:15 PM
--delay should work with all of the frames.

boo

kos
@baxx ;) unless you remove them manually, they'll always stay there, and sometimes become big

I'm trying convert -delay 10 $(ls -v output*png) ani.gif now. It almost makes my machine freeze btw... :P

Weird. It shouldn't be freezing.

Okay, that worked - a bit.
But I can't use it like that.
I now need to eliminate frames 0-73 first.
And then make it delete transparent parts after every frame.
And then it would be nice if I could compress it. 7MB is a bit big...
@NathanOsman Can we do this?

5:20 PM
It depends.
If there is a lot of similarity between frames, you can optimize the layers.
If not, your only option would be to use the -fuzzy option.
(IIRC.)

What does -fuzzy do?
The 7MB is my smallest problem.

It allows convert to distort the color a bit to achieve a smaller file size.

But every object that moves through the transparent parts leaves trails.

Uh-oh - thunderstorm.

You're searching for an excuse to log out? ;)

5:23 PM
No, just mentioning it so that if I suddenly disappear, you know what happened :P

@ByteCommander convert -delay 20 image-{10..22}.png animaion.gif

@A.B. You know how I can set it up to delete the background after every frame?

There are transparent parts in the PNGs.
So I can see through them and see the rest of the previous image(s).

in my examples?

5:26 PM
In MY picture.

ok

Oh man - the rain outside is incredible. I feel like I'm in a jungle.

@ByteCommander convert image.png -background HotPink ;)

@A.B. Ahem! Probably not.

We've got hail now.

5:37 PM
How big?
We really had tennis ball sized hail two years ago here...

No, more like pea-sized.

Oh fun. We had that yesterday

-dispose previous is the argument of the day!

When I open this GIF with Ristretto or EOG, the blue wave leaves exactly 1 imprint.
Here in Firefox it looks as it should.

@ByteCommander No clue.

Jeff Atwood on November 23, 2010

Over the last 2.5 years, we’ve identified a few problematic classes of questions that tend to get asked on our sites. Many of these are documented in our standard set of close reasons: exact duplicate, off-topic, subjective and argumentative, not a real question, and too localized.

However, as we launched the great Super User experiment, a new, previously unknown class of problematic questions emerged — the shopping recommendation.

That is, on Super User we began encountering questions like: …

Q: How can I know which options have been passed to ./configure while compiling / building a Debian package?

kosAs the title said, I've unpacked a Debian package in order to recompile / rebuild it adding a custom option, but I can't sort out how to find the options passed to ./configure when the package was compiled / built in first place. Is finding such options feasible?

6:46 PM
Anybody knows why swfrender ignores that an object is fading out?
I'm talking about the animation on this site
The blue wave is fading out, but after swfrender-ing it, it stays fully opaque until it suddenly disappears.

Argh... some keys don't work.

My GIF also doesn't look nice.
I just want the animation in the link above converted in a not too large GIF for another presentation.
But although I managed to create something, it lacks the fact that the original fades the blue wave out, while on mine it just disappears suddenly.
And it is still huge (5MB, needs a few seconds to open).

Why are you using GIFs anyways? Why not just use an MP4 or OGG file?

brb, diner.
You never know what the machine they give you can display.
And a GIF would be enough, if it would just work!

user136984
@RPiAwesomeness Oh... Ooops! :D :P

6:51 PM
Maybe I have to render the swf to mp4 or avi first and convert that to a motion GIF...
But anyway:

That, or it'll be the 20 Mbps down & 5 up ... obviously I'm hoping for the 20 down, but it'll probably be the 6 down

@NathanOsman A friend of mine found this: github.com/systemd/systemd/blob/master/src/systemctl/…
Next reboot I'm testing it >:D

7:09 PM
wait what
lol @NathanOsman there's been a commit since when that was the right link.
Lemme get the right one.

I wondered about that...

kexec?

c programming

In computing, kexec (abbreviated from kernel execution, and derived from the Unix/Linux kernel call exec) is a mechanism of the Linux kernel that allows "live" booting of a new kernel "over" the currently running kernel. Essentially, kexec skips the bootloader stage (hardware initialization phase by the system firmware, BIOS or UEFI) and directly loads the new kernel into memory, where it starts executing immediately. This avoids the long times associated with a full reboot, and can help systems to meet high-availability requirements by minimizing downtime. While feasible, implementing a mechanism...

7:11 PM
Oh my. That sounds awesome

what ? skip boot loader?

If we had that and the no-reboot kernel upgrades from Linux 4.0 ... man that's gonna make the world jealous

kexec-tools?

brb testing

And that was the last we heard of @Seth for the rest of eternity.

ok, trying again.

Maybe what I'll do is install Ubuntu proper, then MATE desktop on top.

anyone have tried ubuntu 15?
i am using 14 still dont know what it is looklike
is it using gnome?

@user965347 15.04? Yeah, that's Vivid, what @Seth & @NathanOsman have been trying out. I'm downloading it now.

i am curious with it :\

7:26 PM
If you download regular Ubuntu it will have the exact same UI as your current installation.

oh same
whats differences in 15?
hmm looks like i will google it

Newer stuff basically. Nothing super fancy, aside from the introduction of systemd as default.
Umm....okay then
