Now people are trying to close my meta post
Although it is not a duplicate

@Faizan No, but it isn't helpful. People do what they like. There is no way of knowing who downvoted your post or why. Yes, leaving a comment is nice but no, it is not and will never be required.
Especially since, very often, commenting on a downvote only leads to revenge downvoting.

No but why was it downvoted, i mean the answer i posted in askubuntu.com/questions/609074/…

Downvotes are part of life. Complaining about them is pointless. Also, your answer was probably downvoted because you were suggesting rebooting which was not needed at all.

I am talking about other post

@Faizan Perhaps for the reason I said above. Perhaps because somebody hates you. Or hates people who answer questions on tuesdays. Or dislikes nebulas. Or whatever. There is no way of knowing.

10:05 AM
Strange!
thats why i am complaining it in meta what kind of sportmanship it is?

@Faizan No idea. As I said, don't worry about it.

sportsmanship?
okay! thank
If you think my meta post is not useful

@Faizan And what kind of response do you expect? All people can do or say is "yes, poor you, that was awful". We can't do anything about it however.

you may close it

@Faizan That's up to you. I will vote to close as a duplicate (since I believe it is). You can delete it if you like.

10:06 AM
okay!

It's just that this kind of post never leads to anything useful. There are thousands of users here and we have no idea if the person who downvoted will ever see it. The rest of us can't help.

I have edited the post

@Faizan Welcome to real life. ;)

i'm in
rather into the life
Jealous people burn inside and will burn always
@A.B. are you upvoting my posts? if it is you please dont do it, it will lead to serial reversal

3 upvotes, one downvote... Not bad... Some people like downvoting more then other. Some people like upvoting...
**When was the last time you ran out of daily upvotes???**

10:17 AM
i dont know
When i use Ask Ubuntu with enthusiasm, i earn some reputation
And when i dont use it i dont get a single point

@Faizan serial reversal?

I think i was not active too much this month
yea
all upvotes are deleted

@Faizan: kinda sorta
(I occationally get rep with stuff I don't know anything about)

haha

@Faizan We've all been there... no kharma without dharma...

10:21 AM
@Fabby Where are you from?

@JourneymanGeek I regularly get rep for stuff I don't know anything about under Ubuntu. I just apply general logic...
@Faizan It's complicated:

Complicated?

My mum is from one country, my dad from another, I was born somewhere else and my GF is from even further away!

i guess you have some indian background
dharma karma

@Faizan I'll take that as a compliment...
But you're wrong...
It's not because I know something about Hinduism and Buddhism and Catholicism and Judaism and Islam

10:23 AM
Not sure how that matters ;p

@Fabby these are hindi words, thats why i guessed it

They're international words since the Old Empire!

Many indians don't know a word of Hindi ;p

okay!

@Faizan It's just that I read a lot, that's all and I've worked with Indians...

10:25 AM
i hope i dont get serial reversal
because A.B upvoted many of my posts

I didn't even know Hinduism was different from Buddhism until 20 years ago...

haha

@Faizan So what?

nothing

It needs a lot and a bunch of people serially upvoting you for the reversal to kick in...

10:26 AM
yea

I regularly visit answers from buddies of mine and if it's a good one, they get an upvote...

naw, one person with a unknown amount of votes in a unknown amount of time ;p

@Fabby No. One is enough. The details of the serial voting detector are not known but we know it needs multiple votes in a short time. It doesn't need to be from multiple users.

Let me have a look at what @Toroidal has been up to and downvote some of his answers :D
@terdon I've never had any upvotes reversed...
So what I do is not serial upvoting...
(I guess)
;-)

How to stop someone from upvoting your posts

10:28 AM
@Fabby Exactly. Serial upvoting/downvoting attempts to detect people who vote for users instead of answers/questions.

@Faizan You can't...

:(

@Faizan Why would you want to? Either they will be considered serial upvoting and will be removed or they won't and you'll keep the rep. Either way, there's no penalty for you.

okay!

@Faizan I only rated, which I liked.

10:32 AM
The person doing it might end up suspended though. It depends.

Post shitty answers so they can downvote you instead? ;p

@A.B. Time table of A.B. wakeup > edit AU posts > breakfast > edit AU posts > bathroom > edit AU posts > office > edit AU posts > lunch > edit AU posts > back to home > edit AU posts > dinner > edit AU posts > sleep > edit AU posts in dreams > again wake up > edit AU posts > ...and so on...infinite login loop .:P

lol
On SU, on my most active I just posted one answer a day

@JourneymanGeek but you are really a SUPER USER

10:37 AM
@Fabby: Thanks for the help with my problem! :)

@Toroidal You know that thanking me is useless, because I'm a grumpy old fart who doesn't appreciate it anyway! ;-)

user136984
:D

I saw the comment and answered it already...

There are some knowledgable people here on AU among new users like helio
1384 rep in just 34 days on AU
1 gold badge, 6 silver badges
23 bronze badges

@Faizan :P :)

10:42 AM
@A.B you too are among them
2116 rep in 3 months
and i guess most edits

10K rep in 6 months!

in shortest time period

And the only one on AU carrying the Reversal badge! :)

@Fabby i saw it now, i thought you are an old user

I feel observed. :)

10:43 AM
(I'm pretty proud of that one!) They should make those platinum!
@Faizan Yes, I'm an old fart!

but you are not old

That doesn't mean I sit in my cave banging rocks instead of connecting to the Internet! :P

@Fabby i guess you broke records

Who cares?
I'm here to learn...

@Fabby you are old i agree
but not old user
old is gold

10:45 AM
Better break other people's systems by trying stuff out then my own!
4

you are old

@Fabby Cheap shot! You already got that one starred, repeating it is no fair!

:D :D :D

but a gold user

@terdon I've been saying it for 6 months!
I never even dared show up in the chat room until I had my first gold medal!

10:47 AM
gold medal

@Fabby Heh, I got my 10k in 3 :P Well, 621-10k anyway.
I decided I needed rep here to be able to combine activities between U&L and AU.
And know when to reverse etc. I thought we needed users who are high rep on both sites.
At the time, there was only Gilles and bots don't count.

setting up LVM in virtualbox doesn't seem to do it for the / as well, that's only 240MiB in size whereas the rest is 150GB LVM partition, thats annoying.

@terdon That's why I'm lurking in the shadows on U&L

@user3130747 ?

I'm getting bored by AU... I think I'll switch over and liven up the chat room there!

10:49 AM
@Fabby Sure. But answer/ask as well.

@terdon Off course! I'm here to learn anyway...

@Faizan just saying really, I thought when I set it up that the whole thing would be LVM, but it seems that it's made a few partitions that aren't all resizable, I didn't twig that when I set it up and I just went to update stuff :P

Iv'e got 856 on U&L already!

@Fabby Nice :)

i want to share a fact
that is
I know nothing and only i know it

10:51 AM
@Faizan is that a setup
seems like there's going to be some very circular discussion on that point :)

@user3130747 can you post your question in Ask ubuntu or share more details

@Faizan No we all know it so it's no longer a fact.

What did you want to use on virtualbox

I was wondering something the other day actually - SO often mentions about 'link rot' when people are referencing guides and such, but what about link rot from SO? I sometimes reference posts in my notes, but I'm wondering if anyone thinks SO will die out at somepoint and everything will vanish? Just curious
@Faizan yeah I could make a post no worries, I'll write one now

@user3130747 Are you on windows or ubuntu and where have you installed virtualbox and what do you want to run on virtual box
?
I am here from 10 months i suppose but i have been active only from last two months

10:54 AM
@user3130747 Providing links is never a problem as long as you also reproduce the relevant information in your post. The problem is not only link-rot, it's also that we want the answer here not somewhere else.

@Faizan I'm on Ubuntu and the vm is running ubuntu, I think that I'm going to setup another VM first just to make sure that I didn't do anything in the settings
@terdon Yea it's nice when the answer is all in one place, I'm not sure if you are coming from a site competitive point of view or user when you say that though

@user3130747 Not competitive! Of course not. I just want answers on any site to actually answer the question without needing to read a different post. Answers should be self-contained.

@user3130747 You are on ubuntu and vm is on ubuntu, and you want to run new instance of ubuntu on vm ? is it so

"Read this SO post" is a link-only answer just as much as "read this random blog post" is.

which post?

10:57 AM
@terdon absolutely, I agree there. It would also be annoying if people just linked to a blog they had written all the time or something
@Faizan @Faizan yeah in a nutshell :) I wanted to test somethings that was all

@user3130747 Modifying things on vm is easy as you dont have to format the whole disk on failure
just delete the virtual machine and add new
Did you use custom partitioning?

@Faizan You never have to format the whole disk on failure! Worst case scenario, you need to format the / partition and reinstall.

I mean failure

@Faizan yeh they're good - I'm pretty sure i just used VDI - then Dynamic - then set to 150G

a big failure
i had many a times such a big failure that my whole partiton table would get corrupted

11:01 AM
and having all the things on the same partition i guess, @terdon is assuming that things are setup properly no?

and i had no option but to delete partition table
Dynamic

oh wow, is that not a hardware failure if it's gone that far wrong?

@user3130747 Yes. And assuming there's a backup of the partition table as well :)

Not actually h/w failure

@terdon I think you're overestimating my setup :D

11:02 AM
@user3130747 VDI 150 gb is ok
when you install Ubuntu from an iso into that VDI, there are many options
like erase everything and install ubuntu

@Faizan yeh - i thought that it would be, but it seems that there were different partitions, I'm sure that I used LVM on the Ubuntu setup to

something else
etc

I'm going through it again now, becuase I might have done something daft ;)

LVM also allows to change size of partitons

my user names ridiculous too

11:04 AM
if you are not able to set up it properly

@Faizan yeah, I was talking about it last night on here and most people said they didn't use it, though it seems like the best

you can boot from iso image into ubuntu live in vm
and install gparted : sudo apt-get install gparted
and then create partitons like three partitons of 50 gb

Q: starting a process from one terminal from another terminal

theoneabhinavI was wondering of there is any method to start a new process or a program from one terminal into other. what i mean is lets say i have to run gedit abc.txt but i dont want it to block my current terminal window. so is there any way i can run gedit from one terminal into other terminal window. ...

and then install ubuntu on any 50 gb partition

@Faizan are you talking about a VM ? I can live boot and edit the partitions on a vm?

11:06 AM
yea
you can live boot on vm using iso

user136984
Is a cup of Jo, a cup of coffee, or tea?

@Toroidal cup is of bone china or plastic or steel and liquid is either tea or coffee

@Faizan that's cool, i didn't realise that... On the Ubuntu install - you use 'something else' or just straight LVM (for setting up LVM)... not sure if that's a daft question :)

Use something else
it will allow you to customize partitions like you wish

user136984
@Faizan No, I'm pretty sure that it's either one or the other... I thought it was coffee, but someone else here seems to think it is tea...

user136984
11:08 AM
Oh, I'll look it up! ;D :P

well
i guess
cup of tea
seems nice
i guess it is like " will you have a cup of tea"
and like "will you have coffee"

user136984
I prefer coffee to tea though... Much higher caffeine levels! ;D :P

user136984
If I only had a cup of tea every morning, I wouldn't be getting up! ;D :P

haha
so it will be like "will you have a bucket of tea"

user136984
That gives me an idea... Maybe I should try a coffee or tea bath! :D
5

11:12 AM
Nice idea

yea

user136984
Maybe I'm just going crazy though because my store of coffee has run out! :D :P

but be aware of flies
they will run after you after a tea bath

user136984
:D :D :D

@Toroidal Have you ever drunk tea with salt?

user136984
11:14 AM
@Faizan No, I don't think so... Is it good?

we call it as kashir chai (tea of kashmir)
We have a tea with salt daily morning
but the tea is different from the common tea

user136984
Ok, well, I will have to try that at some point then! :D

user136984
How much salt do you put it?

you will have to visit kashmir
for that tea

user136984
And what kind of tea is it?

user136984
11:15 AM
Ok

it takes hours to make that tea

hours wow
I like silverneedle white tea if we're talking tea ;)

continuous boiling of leaves
then milk and salt is added to it
it is good for health
no side effects like coffee

I think it is indeed not really bad. My brother once poured salt into my tea (1st April prank) and I did not notice a bad taste... But I hate milk in tea!

kashmir tea - is this is @Faizan

11:17 AM
I had coffee for whole nights when i had my 12th exams in 2009
@user3130747 yea
kashimiri tea

@ByteCommander black tea :(

Coffee has no side effects. :p

@Faizan I've never seen anything like it!

@JourneymanGeek my urinating system had a fault
after continuous dose of coffee
i used to have a kettle (10 to 11 cups) in one night

user136984
If I am to have any tea though, it will be green tea! And Japanese do very good green tea ice cream! :D

11:18 AM
coffee will do that - regular breakfast tea can as well
@Toroidal you should try white tea :)

and finally after one month of continuous coffee i got some kinda problem
which still doesn't recover
anyway
tea is tea

that sucks

and coffee is coffee

user136984
@user3130747 Do they make that in ice cream form too? :D :P

different people have different tastes
it should be named T-ice cream

11:20 AM
@Toroidal I'm not sure, but it makes a nice brew :) The leaves can be used a few times, it's very good for you. A softer tea than green, the leaves are picked younger I believe

@user3130747 Yes: same plant, top leaves picked when still young and having "white fuzz" on them. Therefore --> White tea...

@Fabby yep, it's nice. Quite pricey though

(It's also a load of <strike>bovine excrement</strike> marketing that it's supposed to be "healthier" then green tea...)

@Fabby really, I thought that was consensus , perhaps I've bought some hype
@Fabby from wiki "However, white tea contains the most antioxidants"

It's like a iPhone: lousy product, great marketing!

11:26 AM
i will now have my tea

White tea is a lightly oxidized tea grown and harvested primarily in China, mostly in the Fujian province. More recently it is grown in Eastern Nepal, Taiwan, Northern Thailand, Galle (Southern Sri lanka) and India. White tea comes from the buds and leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. The leaves and buds are allowed to wither and dry in natural sun. The name "white tea" derives from the fine silvery-white hairs on the unopened buds of the tea plant, which gives the plant a whitish appearance. The beverage itself is not white or colourless but pale yellow, light to the taste, and is free shaped...

salt tea

Scrap that: it's like all op Apple's products...

@Fabby its not a lousy product, that's a poor comparison

Bang for the buck, they both are lousy products...
(My personal and subjective opinion)

11:28 AM
@Fabby where are the retuble links on how white tea isn't better health wise than gree?

Where is the scientific proof that it is?
No proof = marketing

@Fabby bang for the buck is subjective - but can you get the same product for cheaper? With iPhone I generally say yes, with white tea i dunno

(There are scientific studies that prove that there is a correlation between tea-drinking and coffee-drinking countries:
Correlation is not causation...
"These findings indicate that statements suggesting a hierarchical order of catechin content among tea types are inconclusive and should be made with attention to a sampling strategy that specifies the tea subtype and its source"
That was the first one and proves my point...
Next...
Second one is a copy of the first...

QED...

@Faizan what point?
I just said i liked white tea

point?

You said it was healthier...
A better product...
I said it was marketing...

no you said that

11:34 AM
Ah!
So we both said the same then...
iPhone and white tea are too expensive for what you get in return! >:)

Hi @Fabby! Do you have time today? Because I might need your advice a few times (Chemistry) soon... My teacher just told me I have to do the presentation on Thursday this week instead of next week :P

@ByteCommander :-( I suppose so...
;-)

No - I said i liked white tea - you got on a high horse about marketing, I said that I had heard it was meant to be healthier and had believed it, but I never came into the thread saying 'it's healthier', you just decided to go there with it. I just said I liked it :)

Okay, thank You. Skype then?

@ByteCommander Once it's gotten to share screens, I will.

@JourneymanGeek Never stated that! ;D

no worries! I think you're right, and it's good for people to reassess what they believe, i wouldn't be so sure now :)

@JourneymanGeek I can create a blue cocktail called "Skype"
Gin, blue curaçao, vodka, and a dash of
(looking up the english name)
elderberry blossom juice...
There! Now you can drink Skype!
>:)

I think I better log out of AU then, because otherwise it will just distract me and prevent me from getting my work done... I'll ping you on skype if it's necessary, @Fabby

@A.B. what was the answer?
I'd be curious

It's not working.

@user3130747 You can't. You can make a copy of the input data and try it on that but some commands can't be tested without running them.

@terdon ah cool, so it's command dependent rather than a shell feature

@A.B. do u want to test inbuilt commands or scripts?

If I upgrade Ubuntu in a VM does the vm look at the file name (that'll say 14.04) or does it know that the version is 14.10..? Guest additions related
Think i need to update virtual box anyway, i'm on v 4....10 its 4....14 now i think

the upgrade process knows what version you are using - you dont need to worry - just update as normal.
if you are on 14.04 - suggest stay there. You have 5 years worth of support

@fossfreedom cheers, wouldn't be bothered but the LaTeX packages are behind so I need to remove and install, and things have kind of snowballed
I'm struggling to update Virtualbox at the moment though because of guest additions conflicts

user136984
@user3130747 Well, I've gotten away with it so far... :D :P

are they off the same email all the time? you must like them a bit if you haven't filtered their address

user136984
@user3130747 They come from a different email each time, but I suspect that they come from the same spammer. But if I found a way of filtering them, I would never do it! ;D :P

user136984
2:42 PM
Even the IP of the email server they come from is different every time, and so appears to be the email server too.

@Toroidal that's quite an unusual spam. Must be a friend surely? You should note all the IP addresses, maybe they're a treasure map or something

Well, I treasure map would be nice! :D

@user3130747 My email program at the moment does not want to corporate with me... So I am unable to find any of them emails which is sad... :( But a friend of mine it seems has also been receiving these sorts of emails and that he got some of them from "zachleicht@leichtinsurance.com".
