Q: Laptop as second monitor for PC

MahadrasI haven't found any solutions for my particular problem yet. My PC got Windows 7 and my ASUS F552E has ubuntu 14.04. I connected the laptop with my graphicscard on my pc to use the laptop as an second monitor . To switch screens I have to press on FN+F8. The outcome is a black screen. The video...

Blatantly OT and the "Whaaaaat!??" factor.
@Seth You should bake us all cookies when we get to 0 close vote reviews.

@Whaaaaaat lol. Who'd pay for the shipping? ;p

Also, @Seth, how on earth did you place unicode characters in your name? I have tried (and failed) to do hat.
@Seth Everyone who wants a cookie, of course.

Failed? In what way? I am most certainly not the only person who has done it. I just copy + pasted them from online/in a text editor.
@Whaaaaaat Ah.

I've tried to do the U+200b route.

Just expand the character in a regular text editor (or use this chat box) and paste it into your name.

7:07 PM
U̝̞̯̎ͨn̮͉̪̰̻̔ͫͯ͌̏i̹͑̽̄c̬̠͓̱̓̑̔o̺̻͚͕͇̐̍͑̍̅ͥ͒d̜̹̭͔̖e̖͕̪͇̐ͭͤͦ̀ͧ ̜̦̪̺̯̬̘̌ͣ͑͊ͤ̈́i̼̰̱̼͚s̺̫͗ͣ̆̐ ̤̩̪̤̦͈̬̑̂co̬͍͇̰̩͔̺ͮŏ͇̯ͮ͋ͪ̂l̥͔͓̣͎̉͛ͅ!̯͙͓̈́ͬ̑̚

testing
what is that character supposed to be?

U+200B - Zero Width Space
‮‮‮‮

ahhh.

^ Not a newline.
‮U+202E is the RTL control character.
U+FDD0 (﷐) - The Eye of the Basilisk. Not rendered by fonts for safety purposes.

I don't think they let the rtl in names, I put zalgo in my name once, but it dosn't work in chrome, so most people saw boxes

7:12 PM
RTL doesn't work in names, nor does 200b.
I don't think any unicode characters work. Only alphanumeric, space, dash, underscores, etc.

unless they changed it...

i changed my name 2 days ago.
so I guess they did.

In SE it seems to work. Let me test 200b
Oops! There was a problem updating your profile:
Display Name can only contain letters, digits, spaces, apostrophes or hyphens and must start with a letter or digit
200b doesn't like working.
Oh well.
So @Seth, are you gonna bake cookies if we clear the close votes queue?

@Whaaaaaat Probably not.

7:22 PM
Aww.

another thing I hate about being forced to run windows.
the unciode browser SUCKS

@Whaaaaaat It doesn't run hot enough to bake cookies?

@Seth I did bake cookies on my netbook once. I may have overclocked it a bit too much.
took forever though.
that netbook was dying anyways btw.
Also, what do you guys miss most about old computers?

7:27 PM
mateo...
you are unicode god.

whaaaaat's up

@Lucio not much, I added a another feature request to your project

Yeah! I labeled it. Thanks! :)

@Lucio the site blew up, but they fixed that now.

There's lucio

7:37 PM
can't seem to find the labels on the mobile

@Whaaaaaat Old DOS + Win 95 games I guess.
I dunno, there was something warm about computers back then, besides the fans of course.

This post has a dupe, but I can't remember where is it

@Lucio that's because most of them are closed or deleted ;)

yeah

vot to close, leave a comment on alternatives.to I guess

7:42 PM
but there was one like "List of applications for linux similar than windows" post that was good

xD

... ad infinitum ad nauseum. just link to http://alternativeto.net/

My bro @Mateo, have you been playing with Unity3d?

nah, is it fun?

7:48 PM
dunno
people says so

people like it. it can deploy to linux, but the sdk/dev kit is windows/mac only

yeah, that sucks
There is something that I'm unsure about 2D games..
do/can they use 3D models?

@hbdgaf :( guess I could try it on the mac..

@Lucio idk if they can, but if they can render an animation for video... it would seem odd that they couldn't render a sprite without using the 3d model anyway...

I guess I'll have to create a new account..

7:52 PM
What? You just mixed up blender and unity3d.

yeah :D
@hbdgaf I don't get the idea to use a 3D thing for a 2D thing

@Lucio You could use a 3d model in a 2d game so you only had to use 2d physics/movement but still use a 3d graphics engine... or you could render 3d models to sprites, and have a sprite based side-scroller with a 2d graphics engine.
Third option, 2d sprite based with 3d physics... e.g. doom/wolfenstein/heretic

oh right
in The Renderfarm, 21 secs ago, by stacker
You could use 3D models to render different views of a character and save them as sprites for use in a 2D game

Wait, didn't I just say that?
6 mins ago, by hbdgaf
@Lucio idk if they can, but if they can render an animation for video... it would seem odd that they couldn't render a sprite without using the 3d model anyway...

@hbdgaf exactly!

Q: I have had the same audit 4 times now

TimI just got the following review for the forth time: MAKE US MODS OR WE WON'T STOP! WE ARE STILL NO SURRENDERED BY YOU, WE WILL NEVER GIVE UP. The Indian Team Hackers ldkcfjih3gw78hNBYUg After audit completed: Could there be something that means you don't get the same audit...

well, they did spam the site... so there are plenty of examples to feed into the review...

If it did random pulls of spam flags, this would come up a lot. Wouldn't it be diabolical if someone was just trying to pollute the audit pool enough that they wouldn't fail audits much?

8:30 PM
@Seth OT as hell, but I miss the very customizable BIOS

@Seth I haven't had DOSBOX disagree with me on running games that old.

@hbdgaf Sim City 2000

not that old...

@Whaaaaaat $20 bucks I can get it to run...

@hbdgaf I'm sure you can
@hbdgaf I've done it before.

8:35 PM
back to watching doctor strangelove it is then.

+1 good sir

O.o

I'll just sit here for 3 more hours until I get my edit queue permissions back.

@Lucio not what you are thinking, it's a good movie

heh, kk

8:37 PM
aw, no imdb one box?

64' wow

no imdb onebox.
I still want a launchpad bug onebox.

I sort of want to understand the reference to this: youtube.com/watch?v=wcW_Ygs6hm0 and I've never watched it end to end...
@Whaaaaaat it's a thing

Not in questions...
"Laptop Keyboard Backlight not turning off" I had a problem with keyboard backlight that I asked in askUbuntu.com (here http://askubuntu.com/questions/475711/turn-off-keyboard-back-light-sony-vaio-svf1521dcxw) and also I have followed in chat with @Mew (here http://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/16735) and We tried all solution to fixing my issue and we can not fix that. I found some patch (http://www.absence.it/vaio-acpi/source/patches/) for fixing this problem but then I need to create a custom kernel for myself and it's so hard for me. --- ApportVersion: 2.14.1-0ubuntu3.3 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USER PID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC0: kasiya 1906 F.... pulseaudio CurrentDesktop: Unity DistroRelease: Ubuntu 14.04 EcryptfsInUse: Yes InstallationDate: Installed on 2014-06-27 (60 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS "Trusty Tahr" - Release amd64 (20140417) MachineType: Sony Corporation SVF1521DCXW NonfreeKernelModules: wl Package: linu

Upgrading from Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS to 14.04.1 LTS (slapd-2.4.28-1.1ubuntu4.4 to slapd-2.4.31-1+nmu2ubuntu8), it fails horribly on my setup with one disk-backend and one ldap-backend (sync to another server). First, dump_databases in /var/lib/dpkg/info/slapd.{config,preinst,postinst} fails due to get_directory returning "olcDbDirectory" instead of /var/lib/ldap. This is caused by a missing -h to grep, causing another : in the returned line, thus causing the '| cut -d: -f 2' to get the wrong part of the line. This causes both the backup of the suffix to fail, and later the chown after restore to fail. grep "olcDbDirectory:" `grep -l "olcSuffix: ... should have been grep -h "olcDbDirectory:" `grep -l "olcSuffix: ... later, get_suffix causes the same suffix to be reported twice, thus causing database load to fail on the second round of the while since /var/lib/ldap is already loaded with the correct files, but is expected to be empty. I fixed it with a '| sort -u' in get_s

wow.

told you so...

Can we have that in Questions please?
Just with a shorter description.

@hbdgaf best scene ever

Agreed
We should have hats now.
I want hats.

should've seen that coming.

@hbdgaf Oh, you had it secretly stored ;)

8:45 PM
/me goes back to trying to repwhore for 3k rep

@Lucio no, i'm just a google images ninja

he you are xD

we should be able to transfer rep from one site to another.

@Whaaaaaat no we don't

8:48 PM
@Mateo hah. I am still watching, I can just multitask.

We should be able too.

nah

in fact, i have trouble NOT multi-tasking... so. it's a little problematic sometimes.

Yes. I could get to 10k soon

@hbdgaf how are those waffles?

8:51 PM
@Lucio relevance? i did work at a waffle-house once, but i haven't worked there for years. if that's the reference, then yes. short order cooks multitask constantly.

Waffles?

You have to think about all the things in the same time. Good cooking people issue

Yeah, our store wouldn't replace the mechanical ding timers and half of them didn't ding. So you had to depend on smell for some things being done, hearing bacon stop sizzling to tell you it was done, and not losing attention on what you had in your hands. So yeah, I get the reference.

I set all the mechanical ding timers in Target to go off in 30 second intervals once.

I officially hate you right now... I work retail.

8:55 PM
:D

@hbdgaf the noises are critical, mind consuming like nothing else

And that is why I wear noise-cancelling headphones.
No noises for me :D

@Whaaaaaat only big trucks behind your bicycle :D

@Lucio They're just easier not to ignore, because you're conditioned to respond to them. Smells, visual cues, etc are less used as interruptors in most people's lives... so it's easier for them to slip.

@Lucio Bose.
Also, @hbdgaf, Target hates me. I used their baby shower kiosks to watch YouTube once.

8:58 PM
@Whaaaaaat That's why Walmart doesn't have an internet connection. Their whole shebang is on a pseudo-private satellite network.

what? really?
WHY THE HELL WOULD WALMART HAVE SATELLITES?

Also means the Windows instance on my paint shaker thinks it's a counterfeit, since I can't activate it.
@Whaaaaaat Yes, really.

@Whaaaaaat why not?

Paint shakers use WINDOWS?
Where should I ship your complementary Ubuntu disc?

Yes. Mine actually thinks it's at Home Depot...

9:00 PM
You little pirate you.

@Whaaaaaat already sent him one ;) @hbdgaf put a disk in with the other thing i sent you

Also, there is a law saying pirated photoshop does not count as piracy.
oh crap, we attracted Rinzwind.

I like @Rinz just fine.

@Mateo got the switch, thanks.

yo

9:01 PM
@Whaaaaaat was that because of their "accidental" give away of cs2?

@Mateo Heh. I already have discs of that stuff... but at least it will have a logo on it I suppose.

@ThomasW. cool, that was fast, will it work for what you wanted?

and just in time because I ran out of ports on my newly-obtained-and-configured managed switch for my wifi VLAN xD

@Mateo No. Every senator has pirated photoshop.

@Mateo absolutely!

9:02 PM
@Whaaaaaat what does that means?

@Lucio Bose headphones. Can't hear NOTHING.

@Mateo i got a cheap managed switch but I need two wifi networks on it (and am out of ports on the managed switch), so this definitely helps! Thanks!
having said this...
i'm pulling at least 20 watts with JUST this networking equipment

Oh, I didn't said you were going to hear the truck ;)

doesn't seem like much but over time... o.o
(and once my ESXi server is on 24/7... :P)

about to say, that's not much

9:03 PM
mhm
for NOW it's not much
but once that ESXi server is on totally
(it's not on 24/7 right now because reasons)

Utilities-Paid apartments RULE. Server racks, ASIC miners, i'm pulling a LOT of power.

@ThomasW. You could always run a dynamips virtual rack with a pantload of USB adapters...

@Whaaaaaat yeah the apartments cover the utility bills

just had to get a good ISP.

@Whaaaaaat i have this old Gateway i'm converting to ESXi, and my 5U ESXi server in Pittsburgh is being brought out here next month

9:05 PM
@hbdgaf well I had a bunch, and sorry @ThomasW. your box was too small to put a ubuntu disk in :(

@Mateo dude i have ISOs for each version since 9.04 :P
and a spindle of a thousand CDs and five hundred DVDs
i'm set for life :P
now i just need to continue locking down the firewall rulesets for my VLANs

I hate these linux questions that have no information

@Whaaaaaat so request informatoin :)

I do.

@Mateo you know what sucks though...?

9:06 PM
I need to get a beaglebone black. Evidently you could make a goodfet out of it without any soldering according to a talk I watched recently... That could be an interesting Monster fueled weekend

I don't have a large enough power strip to add the extra switch xD

I also hate 1rep users who get an answer, NEVER MARK IT, and just leave.

guess i'll need a new one

@ThomasW. 3-way splitters. Fire is a theory.

@ThomasW. ah, yeah.. another black box adapter...

9:07 PM
@Whaaaaaat I hate everyone indiscriminately... This way, when they give me a reason, I'm already keyed up ;)

i just need one power strip for the other BackUPS battery backup circuit port
i have one on the Surge PRotect Only one, but my network equipment, that's gotta stay up

A: Stop process on power button press

WhaaaaaatJava is auto-killed by using a reboot function. There is no need to run stop. All that command does is tell Java to gracefully (not forced) exit. When the server detects the graceful stop request, it kicks all users and ends the session. When you press the power button, all processes are at fir...

@Whaaaaaat I added to your answer before I upvoted...

A: how to install a tarball into ubuntu 13.10

WhaaaaaatIt is actually pretty simple. All you need to do is run: ./run.sh or sudo ./run.sh The computer will tell you which one to use. Just run the first one and it will give you a message like "You need Root Permissions", then run the sudo one.

^ i think that guy died.

WhaaaaaatThe specific proxy, there are many. Personally, I would recommend Tor for firewall jumping https://www.torproject.org/ https://www.torproject.org/download/download-easy.html.en Download the proper version that suits you (32bit or 64bit). WhaaaaaatSemi-easy (I think) Grab your Windows 7 Install Disc and repair the Windows install. It will automatically recreate the boot table. Grab your Ubuntu Install Disc and open a commandline. In that, type sudo grub-install /dev/sda. Boot into Ubuntu and open up a commandline. Run sudo update-grub

A: Can bootchart be configured to save only current log?

WhaaaaaatYou could probably set a cron script to do that. I assume (in this answer) the files are named bootchart.log.1 and so on. Run crontab -e as the root user, select your editor and add into the end of the file: @reboot /bin/sleep 60 && /bin/rm /var/log/bootchart/bootchart.log.* Let's break it do...

I was about to add the tag :P

there's a set of scripts that comes out during site cleanup for it, but it could be a feed all the time. it could show up right next to the queues with the right userscript.

First Law of Buttons And Lights:

* A person's apparent intelligence is exponentially related to the number of buttons, dials, and blinking lights on a device.*

Exception to the first law:

*If the number of lights are between 786,432 to 1,310,720 and there are around 105 keys, the user's apparent intelligence drops quickly. It drops even faster if there is an Apple logo on the device. Linux users are exempt from this exception*

Someone should build a HAL-9000 cortana.

No, someone should build a platform agnostic cortana/siri using an open back-end.

Someone should make Siri good.

If all you want is a cortana that sounds like HAL, for equal impact, you could try this voice robot on : voiceforge.com/demo
@Whaaaaaat they already bought that company, they're not paying for it twice... so the onus is on the company they bought
until they fire them all at least, then it's a new thing

I guess Apple still can't code.
Also, nobody is getting the Reversal badge.

i've said that very thing before
@Whaaaaaat apple can code a little, they just can't think. the problem is creative people don't usually code conventionally, and really good coders have problems with things that break pattern a lot. so the magic people are very rare and often not appreciated at all.

10:09 PM
Meh. And then there are the people who STEAL YOUR DAMN IDEAS (ノಥ益ಥ)ノ ┻━┻

sure, that happens. just ride the wave i guess. there's also independent discovery... and nobody can really prove which one it is. years late independent discovery should be fine too. as long as it fixes something.
everyone also has a breaking point though.

We should retire the Reversal badge.

someone could get it, but they would lone wolf mcquaid it for a long time.

off for a bit...

10:58 PM
@EliahKagan missed that "if exist" =).
I suppose replacing && with ; would fix the issue, but that could lead to the second command executing before the first is done right?

11:11 PM
wasn't following along, so maybe I'm missing the context, but talking about whether Apple has good coders is missing the point. Producing good code is only very, very partially about having good coders. Good management and organization is most of it.

@AlaaAli ; would not lead to the second (right hand) command starting before the first (left hand) command finishes. That is, ; doesn't cause asynchronous execution: in foo; qux, foo always returns before qux is executed. Once an expression containing ; runs, it's equivalent to an expression with a newline in place of ;. (Of course, pressing ; doesn't immediately cause the shell to run stuff but pressing Enter usually does, so that distinguishes ; and a newline.)

been a while @Chan-HoSuh good to see you around

@AlaaAli If it were desired to execute qux before foo returned, you could use foo& qux instead of foo; qux. (afk, bb soon)

Q: The "recovery" tag

RichardJust now, I saw recovery. I'm not sure what to do about it, but it seems it needs to go, because it isn't specific enough. File recovery? Recovering a system to a usable state? Q: I can't get questions answered half the time because people come along and flag as duplicate or otherwise edit my questions

Lucas WAnyone else have this problem? I keep running into people coming along and editing my questions so they're incomprehensible. Or worse, they flag them as duplicates when they're clearly not. Is there any way to dispute peoples retarded edits/flaggings?
