@Chan-HoSuh something in the kernel or drivers?

not sure what the issue is. Somebody told me he got it to work with 14.04 after several hours of effort... I didn't investigate further, as he is a Linux guru :)

oh, several hours for a guru, means a lot longer for us ;)

I'm now debating installing some lightweight DE, but at this point, my new machine is so nice, I don't know if it really matters
or maybe things just seem a lot faster now that I'm not running Ubuntu on a Mac

mh, maybe. oh so is it a broadcom card for network?
I use unity on the netbooks, then kde on my desktop (mostly for the compositing that makes it mostly tear free)

I got a motherboard that has a Realtek GbE chip

12:10 AM
nice, that avoids some problems

yeah, compositing is good... could never get it to work properly on my MacBook Air under Ubuntu
the Air had(has?) some funky graphics specially designed for Apple by Nvidia
nouveau driver had problems with it
or wait, hm I'm getting it mixed up.. nouveau driver worked well with it but it sucked up battery life. Nvidia driver didn't work properly... funny huh

tempted to use unity on the desktop just because of the integrated menus, maybe I'll try some different docks, since I'm used to going to the bottom of the screen for a bigger screen

yeah, I forked out some cash for a 24 inch display...
well worth the money over time

yep, I got a 20 several years ago a a good price point, can't find a similar for a better price now, totally worth it

man, thinking about the same things as a couple years ago... funny feeling browsing the AskUbuntu pages I used to know so well

Q: How do I disable overlay scrollbars?

htorqueIt looks like Ubuntu 11.04 will come with overlay scrollbars by default. I do like them, but I don't like the current mix of scrollbar types as many applications don't yet use those overlay scrollbars. Is there a way to disable overlay scrollbars (without removing the overlay-scrollbar package)?

Q: If a question I wrote has no replies, can I edit it in order to move it up on the Top Active list?

luchonachoBefore you start attacking me, this is a real doubt. If my question had limited views (say, 5), and no one had replied "so far", then moving it upwards is it just similar to having it posted just now. In other words, if my question is not resolved, what should I do? My alternatives are: Do no...

Q: Migration of tags (live-cd, livedvd)

No TimeThis has already been mentioned here: 'livedvd' should be a synonym for 'live-cd' Correct term for 'LiveCD'? There hasn't been a change yet it seems. @Whaaaaaat I don't know where that came from..

@Seth More and more mobile apps use HTML5 now.

So, do we have any plans to make @Braiam a mod?

@WildMan yep, tells imgur to serve the "medium" size image.

@s

@Whaaaaaat I think he, like me, is a little too alpha for the mod thing. We both lack a bit in the patience department.

@Seth will do, thank you
Are we looking for mods again?

@Whaaaaaat @Wild look here

7:45 PM
@hbdgaf I want to be a mod, but I have nowhere near enough rep, and I might abuse my powers a bit much. Maybe when I make 10k rep, I'll think about running.

Elections are held as needed, although usually in early Feburary/March on this site. There are no plans for an election any time soon, afaik.

@hbdgaf look where?

@Whaaaaaat You should see a conversation I had with @Takkat on the issue... I think mod is one of those things that if you want to do it, then you probably don't understand everything that's expected/how complex it is. If you don't want to do it, then you shouldn't. Finally, the best mods are the "if someone doesn't help fix problems, they'll get big. I'll do it because nobody else will"
@WildMan The message from What that I pinged him in...

The last sentence is right on the mark
I was just asking because I saw Whaaaaat mention mods

@hbdgaf Well no, I want to do it. And I'm sure I'll do a good job at the basic duties. I actually LIKE fixing problems. However, I might go a bit power crazy and do things that will get me banned.

7:49 PM
I hadn't heard anything, and I would doubt it at this time.

At least there isn't a system that bans you from review when you fail enough audits.

does anyone actually use software center? I apologize I can't stand waiting on it.

Tim
@Whaaaaaat whaaaat?
i do, but I had to pkill it literally, now.
It opened twice... #howonearth?

@NoTime Software center is for people that... don't know what they want to install. Which is not most people that talk here.

@hbdgaf I'm really trying to figure out the best thing about ubuntu vs debian. so far it seems ubuntu is super easy to configure.. but comes with a lot I don't want/use
I personally haven't had issues with drivers on ubuntu, but have with debian. (other ubuntu issues yes.. not drivers)

9:39 PM
Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu server, or Debian in increasing order of headaches you'll get.

I think you just have to keep Debian clean :)

@hbdgaf You forgot about plain linux kernel.

I have never used software center

@Whaaaaaat LFS is more for academics than users.

It is integrated through system though isn't it (software center)
in Ubu

9:42 PM
Idk, I use the kernel edgers ppa... so. No idea.

@hbdgaf Still. It is a headache to use.

@hbdgaf keeping to the same name? :)

@Chan-HoSuh i haven't changed it in a while...

discussions haven't changed a while either, it seems :-p

yeah, the people change, but the discussions stay mostly the same except for side-conversations between 3 or 4 contacts each.

9:49 PM
Why do I get no more edit rep :(

I think all the good answers are taken

There are limits on that. Once you reach a specific rep or cap out your edit rep, it just cuts off. I never maxed my edit rep. I just answered stuff.
@Chan-HoSuh Idk, I think we just need some better question/answer pairs. They're mostly specific deployment stuff though, like askubuntu.com/questions/516480/… - it'll earn some rep eventually.
Mostly "I had a problem. Here's my notepad" sort of stuff is what earns rep recently.

I was amused to see it's ahem, the same person asking and answering

@Chan-HoSuh Heh. Yeah, I use AU as a scratchpad. Like, nobody asked this yet, but if they do, it's already here.

It's a shame my Ubuntu is working now.

9:54 PM
my ubuntu install took 10 minutes... been using it a few days and nothing has gone wrong yet. I love it.

I think it all depends how much you clog it up..
At least so far that's what it seems like to me

@NoTime A lot of that is hardware dependent or weird feature you want dependent.... or "I tried this crazy UI tweak and it broke the universe". As long as you don't go out of your way to break things and use standard hardware, you're fine.

Tim
@Chan it is encouraged - blog.stackoverflow.com/2011/07/…

@hbdgaf I actually had a stable super tweaked system, then I broke it, but doing something accidentally. Re-installed, have issues with flash, and some things are wonky because I chose to upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04 .. but it still works.
