@Lucio I couldn't agree with you more. American's would be difficult about that sorta thing.
I mean, take a look at Metric/Imperial

Why can't America use Metric???

it does...

I despise Imperial and it's utterly random conversion factors

This will remove unity right?

5:07 AM
nope
only ubuntu-desktop metapackage

then how to remove unity?

A: Is there a way to uninstall Unity?

DanatelaOK, I managed myself to uninstall Ubuntu-desktop and here is my command to do it. Use it wisely as it will also remove Brasero and Compiz as well as all dependent packages. sudo apt-get purge account-plugin-aim account-plugin-facebook account-plugin-flickr account-plugin-google account-plugin-ja...

and if you need only unity removed, just sudo apt-get remove unity

whoa! i dont want to remove compiz and all!
yeah I will use that^
that will most probably work well here.
and sudo apt-get install unity will install it back right?
@ Danatela
@Danatela
sorry ... but put a space there by mistake!

5:45 AM
you don't need to sorry... Just delete or edit that message

Well i saw it after the time to edit or delete is up!
BTW that command will install unity?

BTW I guess I found the way how can I work with Unity again!!!

lol
sudo apt-get install unity any good?

yep, why doubts?

newbie thats why!

Yeah! BTW Can you look at my AU profile? coz it says 30 badges in one place and 29 badges in another place!
you see from the two screen shots???
how can this happen!!!!
@Danatela
Well in your AU profile it says 41 in one place and 47 in another place!!

no idea

meta it?

6:10 AM
Well i meta'd it...(yo bot! post it here soon!)

VenkiLet me show you two screen shots:- (From the top bar that also has the icons - 'Recent inbox messages' and 'Recent achievements') (From the badges section of mu AU profile) Clearly the badge count is different in different places(Shouldn't it be 33 [3 silver+30 bronze as it shows in the top...

BTW Oli has 401 bronze badges and 91 in total

okay.. i think thats all for today! Gotta go! Ciao!!! ;-D

Q: How do I recover ubuntu package manager from unmet dependencies errors

yuumeiI have gotten the package manager into the following situation and have tried all "automatic" fixes but they did not resolve it. The following packages have unmet dependencies. kolab-libcyrus-imap-perl : Conflicts: libcyrus-imap-perl Conflicts: libcyrus-imap-perl22 ...

@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L migrate and dupe... just my opinion

@hbdgaf why don't they have migration to AU flag?

Migration paths between UL and AU are not open that way. We all know each other anyway.
@Danatela How does the day find you anyway...
Also, I think an interesting addition to package management is a - dump error to graphviz dependency chain dot file. If it were added to say USC, it could be the app's killer feature instead of just a UI that is more user and less admin.

I completely don't get what did you say... Sorry

9:23 AM
How is it going today.
The last bit is sort of a feature request for package managers... it might exist for one of them that I don't know about, but it should be an obvious feature.

ah you mean a graph showing all dependencies?

Graph showing the broken ones. So you can find the root dependency that pulls in the others so you can jump straight to the root of the conflict.

yeah should be nice
but it can be done via script

I'm sure it could, but it seems like something that should be a built-in not a bolt-on
It could be useful as a troubleshooting script. If someone had a package - "Troubleshooting scripts 0.1" it would fit in there nicely.

9:39 AM
hmm so why not to create it?

It was talked about on meta for a while (a troubleshooting tools package). Seems like concensus was "too complex to be trivial, not trivial enough to be treated as complex... Ugh."
*not trivial enough to be treated as non-complex

apt-trouble unmet package...

oh, i meant the total thing, not the single script.
the other problem with that type of thing is you have to find a way to break your system to test it ;)
then if someone complains about a corner case, you start feeling like this:
o/ @Takkat

@hbdgaf o/ hi

@Danatela if you can build test cases, i can try to build the tool.
The launchpad bug reporting page would so read "if you can furnish a shell script to make an LXC container exhibit your problem that the tool doesn't find the root cause of properly, i'ld be happy to take a look at it" well, i wouldn't say that on launchpad... but I would want to soo bad.

3:15 PM
(know this is OT here) Why is my Area51 account name shown as Registered user?
Please someone help!!!!!

Hello Avinash

Hi
@ryekayo
dono what are you trying to achive.

I am sorry for the cryptic question/problem I posted but some of the info i get at work is sensitive and I cannot print it out

an example would be better.

Well I have a log file that I am parsing through and I am trying to use regex to isolate it to this term: AssociationID = d395u348383mfdjcudjdjd

3:21 PM
no not the exact. But you may post a sample which resembles like the original one.

I need what is in AssociationID, the random string is what I need to print out

so you want to print the text that was just after to AssociationID = ?
upto what?

> name Venki

after the association ID code it is the end of the line

@Venki which one is OT?
how many association ID's are there in the log file?

3:24 PM
@jokerdino yes but account name is Registered User! Axtually I am now trying to log out and log in..will get back to you after that

many?

there is a lot of them

@AvinashRaj My query about Area51 here!

@Venki What? Your name is Venki. Your status is registered user.

so you want to print them all.
@ryekayo

3:25 PM
no just the one that is associated with another string

@jokerdino status?? never encountered such thing in AU account or any other SE site....When will it change?? i signed out and signed in but the same thing persists!

the other string is part of the result I get for the question i posted. it is in parenthesis

other string?

the result has (1.23.4.353.4.33.0/112.3.32.4.23.3). I only need the first part of this string to print once : 1.23.4.353.4.33.0 Then it's association ID to print once

@Venki sigh If you check any other user's profile, you will know what is happeneing.

3:29 PM
so you want to print
1.23.4.353.4.33.0/112.3.32.4.23.3 and the value of Association ID.

yes

@jokerdino punching myself in my face okay..very sorry to waste your time...Area51 interface is a bit different from other SE site interfaces...my bad...sorry again!

and if possible just print out 1.23.4.353.4.33.0 and the associationID

search for the lines which contains 1.23.4.353.4.33.0. If it found any then you want to print the number plus association id value.
Am i correct?

yep
you got it!

3:32 PM
you want to do the operation on line which cotains exact 1.23.4.353.4.33.0

yep

then wait for 2mins

ok

i created an example for you
$ cat file.txt
1.23.4.353.4.33.0/112.3.32.4.23.3 AssociationID = d395u348383mfdjcudjdjd
foo
bar
AssociationID = d39jshjhskjhskjs
1.23.4.353.4.33.0 AssociationID = d395u348383
$ sed -rn 's/.*(1\.23\.4\.353\.4\.33\.0).*AssociationID = (.*)$/\1 \2/p' file.txt
1.23.4.353.4.33.0 d395u348383mfdjcudjdjd
1.23.4.353.4.33.0 d395u348383
i think this what you're looking for.
@ryekayo

Not quite. This program basically prompts me to enter in the 1.23.4.353.4.33.0 (it wont always be the same string) and then the log file.
Once there, it parses through the log file I prompted in with the numeric string It asked for and produces that string with its asoociation id

3:43 PM
i asked you before does it's an exact string or not.

sorry about that

so what's the actual pattern
1.23.4.353.4.33.0[one number.two numbers.onenumber.three.one.two.1]
like the above pattern?
@ryekayo

the numbers are random, the numbers are generated from input I would type in
So basically itll ask for the string: i type in 1.2.2.33.4.4.54.5 then asks me to enter the log file name: so i type in server.log. and Itll parse through server.log looking for that 1.2.2.33.4.4.54.5 and print out that and the association ID

which tool are you using for parsing?

grep and awk

3:54 PM
@ryekayo Which asks this?

no it looks for the patterns

you said it would be an random number. Did you able to predict the pattern for that random number?

do you want me to show you the whole code i have so far

you mean the log file.
or just a code.

no the code

3:56 PM
that for command.
i think you partially achieved your needs from that for command.

I partially achieved it, but the problem is that the output keeps printing the string i type in endlessly, i need it to print once
I tried the exit command, that prints the same exact string endlessly, whereas before using exit, it would print everything associated with what i type in for the prompt

if you want to stop printing at the first match then you must use sed or awk tools.

ok

@ryekayo yes, because of for loop.
why don't you try my second command?
just fed the output of for command to the awk. Not the awk inside the for loop.

how would i do that?
sorry im kinda novice with using awk

4:03 PM
what's the output of for command?
same posted in the question?

for .... | awk -F'[(/]' '{print $2;exit}'
?

now try this.
for i in $(cat ~/jlog/"$2"); do grep "$1" ~/jlog/"$2" | awk '/\([a-zA-Z0-9.]+/ {print $7}'; done | awk -F'[(/]' '{print $2;exit}'
it's an one-liner.
@ryekayo
BBL

checking it now

Changed my profile pic........

@ryekayo What happens?

I got the first string showing only once which is progress but it doesnt break the loop
doesnt show the association id

does it prints 1.3.51.0.1.1.10.10.30.48.2084865.2084839?

yes thats what i need

thats what you have said in your question.
> I only need 1.3.51.0.1.1.10.10.30.48.2084865.2084839 to print out once.

4:37 PM
that works, but i need the association id now for it

you want the output to be?
1.3.51.0.1.1.10.10.30.48.2084865.2084839/1.2.840.113619.2.284.3.17454802.933.14‌01109176.280.1

no i want it to be:
1.3.51.0.1.1.10.10.30.48.2084865.2084839
Association ID = 194fjfie90r0403o3ioe30f04

did your for command prints out the accoiation id?

no it didnt

give an clear input. Why you fail to mention the number pattern?

4:42 PM
well the association id is very random

not the association id value. The numbers seperated by dots.
like 1.3.51.0.1.1.10.10.30.48.2084865.2084839
based on that pattern only, i can be able to get the number seperated by dot and the Association id value

ok
yes they did have dots, but i thought the regex already contained dots

in regex literal dots are mentioned as \.
so don't care about that.

ok
in the [a-zA-Z0-9.] it contained dots so thats fine

it matches any alphabet or number or dot one time only.

4:50 PM
ooh ok

BBT :-)
Bye

ok ill try to see what other tweaking i can do, thanks much for the help

5:44 PM
@ryekayo there are really many issues with your script. For starters it's doing everything three times when it only needs to do it once.

5:57 PM
why is that question "off topic"?

Q: How to upload ruby on rails project in server

GopikrishnaThis is gopikrishna. Here i want to upload my ruby on rails project in server. i bought a server space from globehost.org and domain name from Godaddy.com. my domain is www.gainforyou.in. Plz friends help me. I want it real. Here i'm using ubuntu12.04, ruby1.8.7, rails2.3.8. Thanks with Advance.

@guntbert It's off topic 'cause it is completely OS agnostic, there's nothing about Ubuntu there. It is also too broad and unclear what you're asking. Take your pick :)

@terdon, too broad - ok, unclear - ok (thats what I voted) - but "off topic" when he wants to do something on an ubuntu server? seems strange to me
ouch, on 4th reading I saw the "here" - ack your statement

@guntbert Exactly. No idea what the server is running, and in any case, asking how to deploy a website is OT here, the details will always depend on the ISP.

Could someone who has the necessary reputation please vote to reopen the question, please? There are several comments on the question...

6:17 PM
@terdon thank you, i was able to get some help from Avinash Raj in regards to this
most of the code has been changed and is running properly, just have some more tweaking to do on it
i do need help with one more thing thoug
i am trying to use print in the awk statement, but it can't detect the regex i am using, i know the regex is not bad. I tested it on rubular before coding it, but i have basically tried `awk /[expression]/ { print $1 $2 $3.....$30;} and I can never get it to print
i did an echo inside the for loop and it is infinite

6:38 PM
Hi... trying to recover a dual-boot machine that is DOA. I took out the HD and connected it to another Ubuntu machine via USB and it does not automatically mount. Ideas?

6:53 PM
can you see it in disk utility?

gpart can see it and so can testdisk
The data appears intact
Not sure how to mount it ... Is it as simple as mounting or is it more subtle because it is dual-boot?
gpart thinks it is not partitioned, but testdisk sees both the Ubuntu and Windows partitions

@user3533030 if the formatting is ntfs you will need to install the driver if not present
it not mounting has me guessing driver is not installed

Testdisk says it is all NTFS
Even the Linux partition...

what is in your /media folder

@user3533030 eeeeeeeeeeuw >:)

7:03 PM
@user3533030 uh, oh

The contents of /media are only my second internal HD and two "floppy" directories

prepare for a headache it is wubi(maybe)

I thought NTFS support was native to Linux 12.04 LTS...
wubi?

@user3533030 yes but he took out a disc and put it in another machine; if that machine did not have ntfs the driver probably will not be included
well at least I would arrange it like that if I was canonical :+)

you normally don't install the system on ntfs, but there is a "special" installer that installs ubuntu weird

7:05 PM
@Mateo eeeeeeeeeeeeeuw x2 :=)

This install of Ubuntu appears to have NTFS support. My second internal drive is NTFS according to testdisk and I can see it just fine.

@ryekayo [expression] means a character set, not a literal expression. In other words /[abc]/ will match a or b or c, not abc. You probably want awk /expression/{ print $1 $2 $3.....$30;}.

The dual-boot disk I am trying to recover is connected via a USB external drive. It is a SATA / USB box meant to connect SATA drives via USB as external drives.

I guess if the windows part of that disk didn't cleanly shutdown it might prevent mounting?

I f that's what you already have, the regex is wrong or you're not using the right regex language.

7:07 PM
@Mateo yes but you would get a notice about that

Can testdisk be used to copy files from one drive to another?

@Rinzwind hmm...
@user3533030 is there a "mount" button here on disk utility:
where you select the partition on that blue bar
then try to mount

Which utility ?

No... there is no mount button on disk utility

7:17 PM
do you have any way to directly plug the drive into the computer?
inside a desktop sata to sata?

Yes... I'll have to open the desktop and go SATA to SATA...

while it is off ;)
hopefully it will work like expected directly connected

May not have the cabling. Standard SATA cables are much bigger than SATA cables for laptops...

hm... maybe swap the normal drive connector for a moment and try fixing from live disk/usb - that way you don' t mess up your normal setup by accident as well

rebooting
HD is fine... cr**py USB to SATA hardware... thanks for the patience and advice

7:29 PM
that is a relief, glad it wasn't the disk :)

@user3533030 it is always the unexpected.

My dad always said to "look for horses not zebras". In this case the "horse" was the cheap USB/SATA housing.
I guess the horses vs. zebras gives away my location - I am not in Africa...

8:03 PM

@hbdgaf looks cool

Yeah. I find it particularly funny that it's a linux only app, because according to the description - they don't know anyone who could write a Windows or Mac driver ;)
