$ ls -l
total 52
rwxrwxr-x 2 aditya aditya 4096 Apr 10 06:08 Ubuntu One
vdir escapes spaces (even in output)... ls -l doesn't... Is something special going on..
Worth a question on main site?

you got answers within 30 secs,

@Aditya nothing special, that's just how vdir was written

Hmmm..

They're different programs. Why is this surprising?

did you try dir command?

5:01 PM
@AvinashRaj that's just an alias
to ls

@terdon Not surprising... but I thought there was something into it..

Huh, it's not

dir also espaces

Yes, I just saw, my bad

BOOTMGR is missing is an Windows specific error. — Avinash Raj 27 secs ago

@Seth: lucky you

is that correct?

@AvinashRaj No. The OP has used unetbootin, but unetbootin often has issues, I would recommend using a different tool.
Also, you might want to expand on that answer if you keep it there. At least give a link to unetbootin and explain how to use it. As it is, that answer is more of a comment than an answer. In any case though, the OP has a "new laptop" so it's probably UEFI and he will have all sorts of other problems.

5:16 PM
i deleted .

Hi guys!! I came back(today itself!!) ... Can you help with this question here?

Q: Not able to login with LightDM

Rohan DongreI am using Ubuntu 13.10 with Unity desktop. Unfortunately I am not able to log into my desktop. After entering correct password it keeps looping back to login. Could you please help me to sort out this problem? I need help because I have important data in my laptop and I don't want to reinstall ...

5:34 PM
login loop

@Venki I tried the conky by the way, I had a different problem on 13.10 (no transparancy) but found a workaround. I did not see the issue you describe though

Q: How does this user has only 100 rep after association bonus without any posts?

AdityaThe user I am talking about: balpha ♦ He has neither ever asked any question nor has he ever provided any answer on Ask Ubuntu. So, how does he have 100 rep. After association bonus, the rep count should be 101. Where did that unit rep go? Bug, maybe?

@cshubhamrao Thanks, voted

welcome

5:46 PM
@terdon I should post that comment on Skeptics.SE

@Aditya Which? About shog? Someone just downvoted him or he downvoted someone, what's strange about it?

@terdon downvotes don't come into the picture.. Neither he nor Shog has made posts on Ask Ubuntu and Skeptics respectively

@Aditya Yes, but maybe they downvoted

@terdon Gotcha...

Anyway, as I said, the rules are different for SE staff and we don't know them.

5:54 PM
I forgot about that part... No activity doesn't mean they cannot vote either..

@terdon Hmm..Strange. Probably I should wait till 14.04 official release and try later...

@terdon Incorporate the idea of "downvoting answers" in your meta answer and that would answer the question.. BTW, let me cross check

@Venki Did transparency work for you out of the box?
That was the only issue I had

Nope. If you are able to see my earlier picture closely , you will observe a half hidden icon !!!

And the fact that any other user's rep change because of downvote isn't visible to me, played its part in creating that confusion..

5:58 PM
@Venki Yeah, but that's normal. You are using a conky that takes up almost your whole desktop and giving it window_type override. The transparency works, otherwise the conky background would be black

Oh!!

Conky only does "fake" transparency, it just copies your desktop background, not "true" transparency that allows you to see elements behind it

Well well.. what about the question i have about that conky in AU? Shall i remove it?

@terdon Also incorporating chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/14975040#14975040 should help.

@Aditya Just post your own answer and accept it.
Or edit mine as you wish.

6:03 PM
Okay...

@Venki It does looks like it's a 14.04 specific issue, perhaps wait a couple of days?

Hope I didn't go way out of boundary :)

@Aditya boundary?

@terdon leave it :)

hmmm.. Well I suppose i will have that AU question.. 2 more days only for 14.04 release..hope nobody will mark it as off topic.. BTW if someone marks a question off topic will the asker lose rep?
@terdon

6:09 PM
@Venki No, you only loose rep if the Q had been upvoted and is then deleted.

ok. Then no problem. I will keep the question alive.

@Venki You might also want to clarify what the problem is exactly, I only just noticed the boxes you have at the end of text fields, for example, and I had not noticed the icon.

Well as you said the icons wont be visible as conky's give pseudo transparency..anyways I will elaborate on the problem there...

6:25 PM
@Venki No, there will be no way to have both a working desktop and accessible icons and conky as a layer above that. That's why we usually don't have conkky take up the entire screen.
The theme author's page states this as well I think

Hmm... @terdon I have edited the question. Please, see it : askubuntu.com/questions/447977/…

@Venki OK, that's clearer. You don't have a transparency issue though, that's as good as it gets.
There are workarounds but they depend on using the window manager to make conky's window transparent. That's a whole different thing. Try googling "conky true transparency" or something.
The boxes should be fixable, hang on

Hmm..

\o

o/

6:34 PM
\o

What does that mean?? !!! ?? !!!

Just workarounds, it's illegal to divide by 0

@Venki what?

Oh right!! Thanks to terdon for putting that question!! Will bookmark it!! :-)

@terdon LOL
I am missing the devotion ascii!

I don't know most of those either, that's why I know the question :)

:-P

_/-\o/ someone viewed sideways that is groveling in adoration :=)
^__^ cat! ;=)

@Rinzwind More like he's expecting someone to come up behind him...

6:44 PM
not many good q's today :(
but the last 2 days I made a bit of a hole between Luis and me >:D

@Venki We're waving..

stupid chromium
3rd time it just stops loading and crashes :(

@Seth Yeah I came to know about that from the meat question terdon posted above...

sorry, didn't read the transcript before I said that ;)
@Rinzwind I'm on version 34 now :D

34?

6:49 PM
Chromium version 34.

hmmmVersion 33.0.1750.152 Ubuntu 14.04 (256984)

You need to upgrade!

tsk :+)

@Seth You're just doing that on purpose now!

ooh 244 mb in updates O

6:51 PM
I made it into the newsletter again :D
@terdon Doing what?

@Seth Telling people to upgrade all'a time :P

@terdon Ah. Well he is running Trusty, which is still a daily so >:D

:)

WEll i disgusted upgrades in windows. But with ubuntu it is breeeezzyy... Will keep updating allll daaayyyy !!!

@Venki not always
you always need to watch out when there is kernel updates
and the "partial update" can be a killer too.

6:54 PM
I've never had any problems myself...

I've had loads on various distros.
Especially with X stuff

things go wrong when you do not want them to go wrong @seth

I get the "partial upgrade" warning every couple days in 14.04, but using apt from the command line always seems to fix it.
@Rinzwind I'm not saying it couldn't go wrong.
I guess I'm just lucky :P

Hmm.. never heard of partial updates... BTW inorder to stop worrying about kernel updates.. i got rid of propreitary drivers!!!

I've never even had a dependency problem :P

6:55 PM
@Seth last time I has those was with suse 6.4

@Seth You don't screw around with your machine enough. That's -20 geek points right there that is!

during installlation I had to mark any package I wanted to install (and manually select all dependencies)
had to wait for Ubuntu to be released for that to change _o-

@terdon :(

-20 boy, suck it up!
@Rinzwind Manually select dependencies? Come on! I had to manually select packages, yes (I still miss that, I kind of like it) but RPMs bring in their own deps just like debs do.

do we have postgres in the repos?

6:59 PM
@terdon I am still hanging onnnn....

eh why did that post twice?
ey and the 2nd is gone ?!

@Venki Yeah, my unity died now. I don't understand how you people can use this thing. It keeps crashing all the time.

ah found it
weird: postgres does not find it. postgresql does

seth@johnson:~$ apt-cache search postgres | grep ^postgres
postgresql - object-relational SQL database (supported version)
postgresql-9.3 - object-relational SQL database, version 9.3 server
postgresql-9.3-dbg - debug symbols for postgresql-9.3
postgresql-client - front-end programs for PostgreSQL (supported version)
postgresql-client-9.3 - front-end programs for PostgreSQL 9.3
postgresql-client-common - manager for multiple PostgreSQL client versions
postgresql-common - PostgreSQL database-cluster manager

Sorry! I crashed your VM, your unity!! I crashed my own unity too...if you remember..

7:01 PM
grep man!
anyway, bbl.

@Venki :) No worries, that's just one of the reasons I don't use unity.

@Seth cool

Well well. Hope atleast unity 8 will do fine...

easy rep here:
ah update done. needs a reboot :P

@Venki OK, the boxes only appear for me in unity and I can't figure out why. Those things tend to be printed when a font has no glyph to display a particular character but in this case, it's something returned by conky itself (${swapfree} for example). I don't have this issue on Cinnamon

7:07 PM
and back
I love my 12 seconds boot time

@terdon Well BBL after 14.04 release update. Will try the conky after that and get back to you about that problem. Bye till then. Have an exam on 19/4/14(shit!) Gotta read all night!! Byeee!!! :-D(Well not so happy to post :-D. But anyways :-) )

@Venki OK, good luck. Actually, the boxes seem to be the newlines, removing the newline removes the box but that's a bug

update killed flash @seth
and Version 34.0.1847.116 Ubuntu 14.04 aura (260972) :D

7:45 PM
Version 36.0.1933.0 dev aura
is what you want

^^ thought it was cute

yeah, we have snow too

Yeah, just heard from some folks that had 70s a day or so ago and now get snow again. It just struck me funny.

10:04 PM
snow here in Michigan
it was so nice out earlier in the week too

There seems to be a lot of that going around in that part of the country. Heck NC gets snow like every ten or fifteen years... and we got it 4 times this year. I wonder what hurricane season is going to be like :|

That sucks. That type of temperature snap has been happening here about once a week and a half for the last 3 months.
We just haven't been getting precip with it.

10:31 PM
got the swag today D:!

hooray swag.
