12:00 AM
Anyone with GStreamer here?

12:17 AM
Anyone with Ubuntu has gstreamer...
Also, we're not all Indians.
What you did is no less impolite than if I said greetings to all the white people out there. That seems a bit rude, doesn't it?

All right.
Good morning to all thenetizens and Ubuntu lovers.
I have a problem over here regarding GStreamer.

Okay. How so?

I have this error in Terminal
erroneous pipeline: no element "faac"

the code that made it happen, or it didn't happen.

@MayukhNair are you aware that if you instead have just described your problem we wouldn't have wasted time?

12:27 AM
Alright, sorry :/

don't ask to ask, just ask!

The problem is

I wanna stream to YouTube Live using Ubuntu
But

................................................................................‌..... O_O

12:28 AM
bugity bug bug. already on launchpad. basically you need some set of gstreamer-good/bad/ugly and there may be a bug in some versions that makes libfaac not show up.

SnowMix+ GStreamer is the only option
I'm using the sample code provided by SnowMix.

see the previous

It is the 1st hit you get if you copy paste your error into google. Was for me anyway.

Uhuh
Crap, error.
faac is already the latestversion. What the?

12:31 AM
@MayukhNair tried with gstreamer 1.0 instead 0.10?

@terdon I knew I loved you for a reason sir... in a totally platonic way.

1.0? Not yet.
Will update and get back to you.
Alright, another issue.

@hbdgaf :)

I may be kicked out and ostracized by the community of Ubuntu and GNU.
And banned from bootingto Linux :P

nope. we don't do that at all. we just point to google or ignore. we don't ostricize people at all.

12:33 AM
Let's see.

Hang on, we can ban people from running Linux? Seriously? Can we ban Linus?
You are hereby condemned to write the kernel but never run it, from now unto the end of time!

well canonical has the power to modify all the things during apt-get upgrade... honestly. so..... theoretically it IS possible, but it would never happen.

My parents used WinXP and I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS dual-boot

LOL, He will probably do the same with us as he did with NVIDIA, if you know what I mean
:P
Yeah, so my parents used WinXP and I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS dual-boot
They like it.
Except for one issue.
GRUB.
For reasons unknown, they hate GRUB.

Q: Hide Grub menu and keystroke to reveal

Logan WilliamsHow do you have the grub appear on a key combination, but have windows boot default. I'm running ubuntu 11.10 and grub 2.0. Here is my current /etc/default/grub # If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update # /boot/grub/grub.cfg. # For full documentation of the options in t...

Ugly, small letters, complicated options, blah blah andcrap

12:36 AM
I think that's what you're looking for.

you can make grub both pretty or silent. either way, grub is not a reason not to use linux... ever.

So, horror of horrors, they want the Windows Bootloader back. <facepalm>

Hang on, do they want a bootloader at all? Are you dual booting?

@MayukhNair there's already a question for that too... did you search the site or just spam chat?

Wow. Spamming chat?

I thought this website was called "Ask Ubuntu" for some reason -_-
Yeah, dual boot

12:38 AM
@MayukhNair Yes, the website is.

WinXP+ Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
Troll :p

@MayukhNair So, do you want a pretty grub maybe? Like this: google.com/…

Now that is sexy.
Wayyyy sxy.

I would be relatively careful calling people trolls without googling or searching on site...
I had a stern talking to from moderators about that once.

@hbdgaf I assumed he was referring to himself.

12:40 AM
I was referring to Terdon.

@MayukhNair Excuse me?

@terdon <3

"@MayukhNair Yes, the website is."

U mad bro?
C'mon chill.

You come into chat instead of taking the time to post your question, you don't even search the site and despite this we take the time to help and I'm the troll? I realize you're new here and you can't know the local customs but this kind of thing is really frowned upon. We expect people to help themselves first and then come to us.

All right,I'm sorry -__________-
Please calm down now.

12:42 AM
Preferably by posting content on the main site, the one with ask in its name, that can then help future visitors.

OK.

Q: Is it possible to boot Ubuntu using the Windows bootloader?

badpAs noted by many people, Windows 8's UEFI requirements might will won't get in the way of installing Linux (or whatever), as the replacement bootloader will also need to be signed somehow. Some systems All systems will let you disable the signature requirement, but the feature might be hidden to ...

^^ I said search on site... I'm sure it's there... no really, I mean... it's there. Totally.

Thanks @hbdgaf.
Alright.
Thank you all for guiding me.
So, if you do not discuss issues on chat, what do we do here?

no problem.

Discuss programs and stuff?

12:44 AM
@MayukhNair Next time, just spend 10 minutes searching the site and come and ask and you'll see we'll be much more friendly. Promise.

Alright, I'm sorry, @terdon
Now stop.

discuss anything people want as long as you don't impede someone that needs help from getting help or offend anyone. and yes, do search the site first.

We do discuss issues, we just got off on the wrong foot with you is all. Don't worry about it.

12:45 AM
Seriously though, install burg, it's gorgeous, they'll never want to see the windows bootloader again

@terdon last time I heard about burg was lacking uefi support and other stuff

Same here. :/

Ah, that might be an issue, I've no idea

There was another project out there for this.

12:46 AM
xp does not have uefi... ever. it was not built at the time. it can't be a thing.

VBut who gives a damn, I'm stuck with good old American Megatrends.

^LOL AT THAT PIC

@hbdgaf Too late, we're all calm now. You should have searched faster :P

fair enough. too slow. i fail.

@hbdgaf No, it doesn't even boot on it I think.

@hbdgaf not at all, doesn't have gpt nor efi support

12:47 AM
I have few issues with Win8, and the biggest one that irks me is:

that's why i was all simma down. xp + uefi problems is like. NO. boss says NO. underling says NO. everyone says NO. just NO.

HOW TDO I BOOT INTO THE F*****G BIOS

moves @MayukhNair to Root Access room
@MayukhNair and there's a little but important problem with what you want to do: BIOS IS DEAD

OK.

EFI means no BIOS

12:48 AM
@Braiam I have yet to touch an EFI system :)

But how do I set Boot Device Priority then?
My friend got a shitty HP laptop
He wants Ubuntu.
PC says "no hozay. Follow Microshit."
WUBI screws up EFI so no risktaking

OK, searching Ask Ubuntu.....

@MayukhNair err... boot with windows 8 and... superuser.com/a/594975/235569

short answer, type less than twenty characters on google and press f9 during the boot process...

12:51 AM
But seriously, do we have an EFI supporter here? :p

turn it off. that's what i did on my asus.

OK. I'll ask him if he's comfy with it.

xp used to boot on this box means if you're asking about uefi, then you're trolling.

No, not THIS box :P
My friend's HP laptop.
I dunno the model.

how quickly things change. i'm going to play some morrowind. later on fellas.

12:53 AM
kthxbai

use x64 for uefi. other than that, good luck. i'm out.

k
OK, see you guys later. Setting up WINE on that crap XP box.
Thanks for all the help

another "paid" for ubuntu: askubuntu.com/questions/447440/…

lolwut
Does that guy live in North Korea or somewhere?
"paid $16 for Ubuntu." Seriously?

@MayukhNair happens more often then you think

12:58 AM
But if that guy searched for Ubuntu, he must have seen somewhere that it's free! People are that ignorant?

especially when they think they get a "peace and love" t-shirt: ubuntu.com/download/desktop/contribute/…

I paid for Ubuntu super ultimate no tweaking edition wine pre-installed, vlc out of the box and loads of automatic.... no. You don't pay for Ubuntu. People are ignorant. Consider not searching the site for the tweaking boot.ini question...

^ why nobody read that?????

I assumed everyone landed here ubuntu.com/download/server
wink wink... nudge nudge

1:02 AM
hah:

Either way, Ubuntu is free. Server ISO downloads don't even push you through a hassle donate now screen.
Makes you feel a little like this:

@hbdgaf interesting
I usually use the release page: releases.ubuntu.com/12.04

you no thinkee i like the mariachi guitar? i certainly do
@Mateo me too, but when trying to find a reason that people paid for it, i default to exacerbating the problem with pointing out that server doesn't make you jump through a hassle screen.

GUI is extra ;)

lollerskates

1:08 AM
Anyone here who heard of Mamoru saguramoch here?
The Beethoven of Japan?

i heard of suzuki. as in the music learning method progenitor... not the motorcycle manufacturer

@hbdgaf won't forget that tune, sister played the violin

Saguramochi's deaf but yet composed music that got international fame. He revealed a few months ago that he actually paid other composers for it. Anyone wanna listen to his original music? youtube.com/watch?v=0kcF7E69C6Q

Gorillaz did a cover ;)

1:12 AM
I lurve Gorillaz.

@Mateo you always make me smile a little bro

well, later everyone.

I got to about here before I stopped on the piano on the technical difficulty scale... youtube.com/watch?v=0uoR76XEVPY
for whatever reason, tchaikhovsky seems to like monstrous chords.
like eleven fingers required chords.

Rachamaninov had Big hands

1:28 AM
heheh. hilarious. the people that were teaching me were worried i would injure my hands by over-reaching at one point or another. seems typing is super-easy now...so i guess i can call it a win.
also, using those boards is quite hilarious...

It's hard to get trained in western classical music in India here.
Hard to find someone who'll teach me how to play Mozart, Liszt or Canon.

It's more fun to play rag or jazz anyway. Don't fret over it. I had to play classical and wanted to play anything else.

@hbdgaf Isn't it? I love those guys.

LOL. In India, either you do Indian classical music, or some Bollywood crap, or some Western songs, provided your teacher likes it. :p

@hbdgaf So you still play? I thought you said you stopped. And improvising is the most fun of all.

1:33 AM
I quit my school's music class because guess which song did he ask us to practice?

I don't play any more, but one of my parental units once noted that "you can hear how happy he is when he plays that... why don't you let him play that music all the time instead of making him do the other"

@MayukhNair Same here, it would be very hard to learn Indian music in Europe

And we say we're connected. -_-

We are. Just in all the wrong ways.

Right.

1:34 AM
@hbdgaf Don't stop playing! I always think it's a shame when people stop. Just take the pressure away from it and do it for fun. Find people you can jam with, there's nothing like it in the world!

^TRUE THAT
The best feeling in the world.

I stopped a decade ago.

Aye
@hbdgaf Well, crap. That might make it a bit harder to start again but hey, my flat mate's father learned the violin at 60

An electric keyboard wouldn't hold a candle to a steinway baby grand or a harpsicord anyway.

@hbdgaf Of course not but it depends on the sound you're after.

1:36 AM
I can still sit down and play. it's muscle memory after an hour a day while i'm half asleep at 5 am

Like, we travel in the bus and the radio plays a shithead rapper called Honey Singh. We hijack the audio system, plug our phone to the USB, load Eminem on the tracks ad rap together. And if that isn't an awesome feeling, tell mewhat is. ;)

I did try the graphmatica through wine. Does it have a built in calculator? i don't see it anywhere

Graphmatica?

@MayukhNair Awesome for whom? That's not jamming, you need both people in the room to jam.
@hbdgaf And do you have anyone to play with?
Hmm, that one's strange out of context.

no. i'm considering learning mariachi guitar though.

1:38 AM
The Desperadoes theme. ;)

Ah, frets make everything easier!

:')
Ai-ai-ai-ai!

once you get to a certain degree of proficiency, doing something isn't fun any more at all.
so you have to pick something else to learn.
@MayukhNair and yes, that is where that came from

It also depends on fanaticism.
You ain't that of a music fanatic, so you left.

@hbdgaf Only if you're attempting to repeat someone else's work. If the only thing you are trying to improve is your technique. Fuck that, play jazz!

1:40 AM
if i had someone to do dueling pianos with or something, it could be interesting. also, i'm so def moving to louisiana before i die. they have dueling piano bars and no property tax after retirement age. seems like wins all around.

Improvise, surprise yourself with what you play, play with others and communicate with them, react to the same cues in different ways.
@hbdgaf Yeah, there you go.

Sounds like an awesome place to be in.

@MayukhNair Yeah. As far as the music goes.

I dunno if this qualifies as jazz:

better than here for sure that way, but it's not as safe as my current situation.

1:42 AM
Safe?

i don't have to worry every where my meal is coming from. if i moved, there would be a worry period.

I dunno if this qualifies as jazz:

Anyone saw thatRange Rover Evoque ad?
The one in which hubby washes a mud-coated RR
The song in the background. :')
"High as a mountain/empty as a river"
Ah, found it. It is Jazz.

i don't know what you're talking about, but if it's the bbking song it sounds more like blues than jazz.

Yes, it is the BB King song.
Eric Clapton did a cover on it :o
Guitar is awesome, but doesn't match

that's more blues than jazz

1:47 AM
OK. Pardon my poor knowledge :p

it's fine. i could also be wrong. that is possible.

Ah, here's the land rover version:

that one is more jazz than blues.

LOL.
Any personal PlayOnLinux game recommendations?

i don't use playonlinux. i handle my own wine problems.

1:49 AM
Itching to try some good windows pc game on ubuntu and see the difference.
I like playonlinux.

sometimes i crib to the playonlinux scripts to see what i need to do, but i like keeping my number of wine instances below a bajillion
cynicism

I actually have never even tried. I just reboot into windows. I only keep it around for games.

I want to see whether there's some huge change or it's as crappy as on Win kernel.

i have immdbg and ida running on winedrives, but i also have game winedrives. i just try to have a business one and a pleasure one.

Uhuh.
Can you recommend any linux game which you like a lot?
Linux exclusive.

1:53 AM
l4d2 runs fine on linux steam and it was free
i'm more a fan of this type of music youtube.com/watch?v=XEPpoUEl2JU

Full name? Even google ain't showing I4D2's full name :/

left4dead2

oh i thought it started with an i, my bad
left4dead 2 is awesome :D

it gets better frame rates on linux than windows with the same hardware. it's an interesting benchmark for linux gaming haters

Will try it. Thx.
Steam for linux is as good as pc?

1:57 AM
less selection, better performance.
also, this music is more my style. youtube.com/… i really enjoy most of the playlist.
just skip until you get to the taj-mahal version then move forward. the first four or five tracks are the same.

I didn't know Seagal is as good a musician as an actor.

he's a better guitarist than he is an actor.
angryface kick punch hurt != acting. playing a guitar is playing a guitar. it's totally a different strata of talent. can't blame the man for getting paid though.

hi guys

Hi.
Steven Frederic Seagal[2] (born April 10, 1952)[1] is an American actor, film producer, screenwriter, film director, martial artist, musician and reserve deputy sheriff. A 7th-dan black belt in Aikido, Seagal began his adult life as an Aikido instructor in Japan.[3] He became the first foreigner to operate an Aikido dojo in Japan.[4]

@fossfreedom @Oli if the featured question will be marked as duplicate, will the bounty move to the original question?

2:04 AM
@MayukhNair At one point they had to tell him to cool his jets and stop trying to be a badass though. Like the aikido guys were all, no really bro. Calm.Down. Just stop.
@Danatela who tried to dupe a bountied question?

me =)

Not aikido behaviour :P
What's the question?

That sounds like some unnecessary skullduggery. Why try to screw the system up. Just let it ride until the bounty is awarded.

@Danatela You can't close a bountied question, only mods can.
I'm not sure what happens in that case though. I think we refund the bounty and they can then put it on the other question if they want.

2:07 AM
@Seth good to know

What happens if you answer a bounty question within the deadline and the bounty expires?
And the answer is correct?
Is there any way you can reclaim the bounty?

Depends. If the answer gets a score of >2 the bounty will be awarded by Community.
If it just gets a score of 2 I think you get half of it.

bounties can just ghost a day or so after the deadline. the offer-er can award it for a period of time after expiration. there' no "magic you get the bounty because your answer is the most right" wicket.

I got 2.

@Seth when did that change?

2:10 AM
Hm? afaik it's been in place for a while.

Someone please upvote me so i can fucking comment on posts

I'll go look it up though 'cause I can't quite remember how it works.

@Seth I had to chase my eclipse bounty for the version update for 12.04.

@MayukhNair Just make a couple of edits ;)

@MayukhNair answer or ask more and curse less. the problem will solve itself.

2:11 AM
@hbdgaf Em, yes. Hate it when you have to do that.

Jeff Atwood on June 18, 2010

We originally rolled out the question bounty system in January 2009. It has worked fairly well, in terms of motivating answerers and increasing the connection between askers and answerers. But I think we made some mistakes in being overly strict in our design of the bounty system.

Just take a look at some of these highly voted meta requests in the [bounty] tag:

How about making it possible to set up bounty on someone else’s question? Why an answer can’t be accepted after an unresolved bounty? Please do not auto select answers on bounty questions Why do I always have to accept an answer at the end of the bounty period? Should SO introduce a Re-Bounty feature …

@MayukhNair Bad formatting is easy to find too.

*idea

@Braiam Hm, I think that is a bit out of date.
I'm pretty sure there is a way to win the entire bounty now.

@Seth err... that still hasn't been superseeded

2:13 AM
The only bounty I am an expert at is the one NFS Most Wanted offers :'(

either way, it's news to me so good show on all parts. i haven't messed with trying to earn bounties in a while.

checked out all the points and are still valid with current rules

hm ok.
I was pretty sure I had earned a full bounty automagically before but maybe not.

i'm going to defer to later judgement. think tags. we all just need to stop being concerned with minutiae and just do the damn thing.

btw @hbdgaf, you might want to win this one ;) askubuntu.com/a/123001/169736
you know... you have interest there :P

2:16 AM
it's not really a point of interest for me. rep here is just a fringe benefit at this point. i don't want, need, or seek it.

@Braiam he won't win that one automatically though, since his answer was posted before the bounty.

I suspect gert is going to award it manually to the other answer. my answer to that one was quite trite
I'm sort of a dick that way on answers. I don't waste words. It seems quite the opposite in chat, but it is what it is.

Hmm, is this an answer?
-1
A: Cinnamon icons doesn't appear

billopen a ternimal window and enter: gsettings set org.nemo.desktop show-desktop-icons true

Looks like an attempt at one to me..

i flagged something like that in the queue as nan since it had no formatting and just read as gsetting blahdey blah
maybe it had edits since i saw it.

Q: Frustration when the OP doesn't "get it"

ewwhiteWhat can you do to prevent going down the rabbit-hole of answering a question where the original poster just doesn't get it? Questions that seem innocuous or should have a straightforward answer quickly devolve into comments that reveal how big of a mess the OP is really in. And maybe I'm looki...

2:23 AM
hm, well an answer is an answer formatting or no.. Just say'in.

hair pulling there ^

if you were in the review queue and you saw:
gsettings blah
would you call it an answer or not an answer?
that's what i saw. i'm not debating that in its current form it looks more like an answer. i'm also not fighting a disputed flag. i'm just telling you why i flagged the way i did.

Why was this closed as OT?

Q: Installing games with Steam on a NTFS partition in Ubuntu 14.04

user1459339Is it possible to install games with Steam to a NTFS partition from an Ubuntu 14.04?

I think you are asking the same question over and over again, like askubuntu.com/questions/446179/…, and askubuntu.com/questions/446165/…Jacob Vlijm 6 hours ago

@Braiam Yeah but that's dupe not OT.
I suppose the votes could have been split.

2:27 AM
A bit late, but installing and executing stuff that is supposed to work in Linux into an NTFS partition is asking for problems. — Braiam 9 secs ago

@Seth then please consider marking askubuntu.com/questions/440158/… as a dup of askubuntu.com/questions/62730/…

@Braiam I understand why it was closed, but OT doesn't make sense.

2:46 AM
@Seth BIG thanks!!!
I just got my bounty back =)

:)

there's a baby got back joke in there somewhere, but i can't find how to make it appropriately.

@Braiam Stop it. That question was specifically about 14.04.

@Seth and?
is a "news" kind of question

So?

2:57 AM
news dies

Doesn't matter.
Leave it.
It will be relevant for the next 5 years. At least.

HA!
@Seth there hasn't been official announcement yet

So? The official news is out. Besides, we're talking about the tag, not the question.
