I don't know if this is a real answer. I did my best effort..
Also, mark it as duplicated of something is actually vague and useless.

I'm having issues with my login screen, it's extremely slow. What could be causing that?

@ruda.almeida Why?
Did you just installed Ubuntu?

@Lucio Well, because it's a Q&A site and part of it aims at helping troubleshoot issues?

Or did you get those problems after an update or something like that?

But if it's the wrong place I can ask at the main site. I have already, but maybe it was misphrased...

12:05 AM
@ruda.almeida You didn't understand me.
I mean, what is the reason of the error

@Lucio I have no clue.

@ruda.almeida Do you have a link?
Tell me a bit more.

Q: Very slow mouse on login screen

ruda.almeidaI have just finished installing Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS on my laptop. I have performed apt-get update and upgrade and rebooted. The mouse movement on the login screen is very slow. After logging in it works fine. How can I troubleshoot it?

I got to go now, but have in mind that to help you, you need to bring all the possible information.

@Lucio I will update the question with the laptop model. Other than that, is there any info that could help?

12:08 AM
@ruda.almeida maybe the model of your mouse
but the important part is on the question.

@Lucio Thanks for your help!

I like to use the package manager as much as possible, but then I always get a little discouraged when reading things like "The suggested way of installing Redis is compiling it from sources as Redis has no dependencies other than a working GCC compiler and libc. Installing it using the package manager of your Linux distribution is somewhat discouraged as usually the available version is not the latest."

I think we should re-pin the message about the Ubuntu Forums being hacked...
9

4:18 AM
Who starred that? (may I ask..)

I did. I can unstar it if you're concerned about it being starred causing the Ubuntu Forums pin to drop down farther; but the original Ubuntu Forums pin is probably still high enough to be visible in most people's browser windows.

4:30 AM
I think I found another bug in Chrome. For real this time.

@EliahKagan Oh it's fine. There are so many chat mods around though I thought one of them might have and they could re-pin the message ;)
@NathanOsman cough --^ cough

What do you need me to do?

Could you re-pin this?
Jul 20 at 23:09, by Nathan Osman
Ubuntu Forums appears to have been hacked - if you used the same password elsewhere, you are strongly encouraged to change it.
I think it should still be pinned for now.

It is pinned. At least the only option I see is "unpin this message".

Hmm.. No it's not pinned.

4:44 AM
I can't fix it then. Let me make a new one.
Oh now I figured it out. Hang on.

OK.. that works too.
@NathanOsman Oh.. what happened may I ask?

Er...
> "You have already voted, but the voting has been cleared by a moderator"

Hmm.

I AM a moderator. Le sigh...

I wish I could see.

4:45 AM
Let's try it all over again.
Ubuntu Forums appears to have been hacked - if you used the same password elsewhere, you are strongly encouraged to change it.

Hmm. I'm getting that error too in a room I'm owner off.
I'm sure this is new.

Should I clear the stars on the original so that it doesn't show up in the side?
People might be confused by two.

Probably.
Thanks.

Q: Why does increasing padding in this <a> increase the vertical margin?

Nathan OsmanThis is probably the most unusual CSS behavior I have ever seen: I have an extremely simple table that consists of two cells - one with plain text and another with a link: <div class="content"> <table> <tr> <td> Hello, world! </td> <td> <a href="#">Hello,...

I guess we'll find out what I did wrong.

@Greg They were.

I'd just leave them offline until Ubuntu Discourse is finished

o/ all
thinking about making a wizard for multibooting my raspi with berryboot. seems like people could find it useful if i finish it.

amusingly, I think has the password that got leaked when last.fm got hacked

@JourneymanGeek at this point, i just consider passwords to be best practice, but effectively useless. everything should support openid and just call it a day.
something bad happens, just reset one password and you're done

10:51 AM
@hbdgaf I've got an army of pis on my desk right now :) No berryboot though, just Debian.
@hbdgaf OAuth2.0

@Greg neat. i was thinking that it would be interesting for laypeople to be able to say "want to try xmbc" or "want to try retro game distro" etc etc. so yes, the initial install would be debian, but letting lay people try out all the single purpose distros could be interesting.
@Greg yes

appears

@hbdgaf I guess, but for the price of individual SD cards with the distros pre-installed, I'd just swap the SD card

@Greg fair point. i just think it should have a button. my use case is, i have one pi. i want to try xmbc, definitely use it as a file server, and have the retrogame distro with all the kinks sorted out. if someone already did all the hard parts, i can then just say: switch boot option to file storage. reboot pi. rsync. when finished, reboot as xmbc because paying for TV is silly with all the streaming video providers.

@hbdgaf I'm sure if you do a good job of it you'll get lots of users.

11:02 AM
@hbdgaf and not use VBB
its a piece of shit which people who don't know better use.

django bulletin board apps exist... just saying.
with the right settings and design patterns, django can be sqli-proof.

@hbdgaf: or smf or phpbb or.....

they're going to look at me silly when i go in to the bank and want to set up several accounts so i can auto-draft my budget categories...probably

How come my tab-to-complete doesn't work in the terminal any more?

BBL

11:29 AM
@Greg what term emulator? and which tab completion?
tab completion breaks in lots of ways... some cases with sudo and pipes come to mind. there was a question around on writing your own tab completions as bash functions i answered somewhere at some point.

@hbdgaf just the standard gnome-terminal. Only directory completion works, nothing else. For example, on all other machines, when I checkout a new branch on git, I don't have to type the whole long branch name. Example: git checkout 98-[tab] -> git checkout 98-AsyncHttp-Improvement
another annoying one is sudo apt-get install php5-[TAB] should list all matching packages. It doesn't

your apt doesn't have super cow powers i think.

it does! it tells me it does in -h

then i have no idea... do you have something in the directory that starts with php5- or something? it might be a search path problem for the auto-complete
or a command that starts with php5- or any number of other completion path search problems. i think it's probably related to finding another match for php5- that isn't a package name.

hmm, I might just create a new user. Seems to do the trick most of the time.

11:37 AM
it may. hope you work it out. i'm trying to build qt5 for android dev atm. just reinstalled my box, so i'm going through all the configure everything steps yet again.

That's what I like about Ubuntu now though, the default OS is really capable of most things, and I don't find myself wasting hours of configuration each time I install a box.

definitely. i just need to make a pseudo-package and write a couple of scripts. i install a half dozen packages, add some ppas, and a few other details. the only things i can't solve with a pseudo-package are java cough crap cough related.

How do you find the open jdk?

i use it on principle. if the app doesn't work with the openjdk, it's a problem with the app or the jdk which should be fixed... not a reason to switch to the oracle jdk

I see. I don't do enough Java-based stuff to notice the difference to be honest, but my colleague always installs Oracle's.

11:46 AM
well, everything ever written in java warns you that it's unsupported. i haven't noticed any oddball behavior. stock trading apps, eclipse, android studio, etc all seem to work fine... although they all warn about it. i have heard that some people that use loads of threads experience better performance from oracle java though.
oh and burp
when someone figures out usb passthrough and high-speed usb for openbox, i won't use the oracle version any more. (they have it working for open on BSD...just an fyi). that just leaves flash, which is something i don't see getting fixed until the DRM extensions for html5 get ratified and adopted (although that's adobe, it's a similar principle).
example: at least some N wireless cards don't work right in virtualbox VMs if you're not using the oracle version with the host side extensions and the guest side extensions. i know this to be true. i haven't seen anything similar with java.

Yeah I use Oracle's virtualbox. Didn't get anything working in Openbox.

crap, typo. you know what i meant
openbox is my jam on my other laptop. this one is stock ubuntu mainline
nvidia runs hot with unity. intel doesn't. so it's a choice.
brief aside: i wonder if the same people make all the delay strategy games that are civ-like on facebook. if not, they should. it would just be a graphical asset swap and they'ld have another game with the same gameplay, but stupid users would like one more than the other because they hang up on futuristic ultratek, swords and sorcery, steampunk, or other.

@hbdgaf they won't.
And even if they did, the community wouldn't, as it's open source.

@Lucio bug on launchpad == issue on github yes

not a big fan of marshmallow except to make peeps jokes.

@RolandiXor at this rate it will probally run out of steam around the 31st, we'll see if marks interview helps any today.

@Mateo yep.

we'll see. i wonder if there will be any hard pitches on reddit, or if it's going to be mostly lobs that are easily knocked out of the park?
i won't jump in it, because i don't want to be a part of torpedo-ing something because i'm paranoid and frustrated. i just wonder about other folks.

I bet someonee will ask some thing similar, I don't think they made a phone os just to put on one phone

that's a fair assumption. it doesn't stop the scared it'll happen and depend on community support to get it working somewhere else though.
so design decision question: you're building something that uses images/blobs from other projects. cache them via some static thing like github that you control to make it stable? or try to maintain a link list?

5:27 PM
Like linking to a library, are we talking open source?

it's open source, but raspi images. working on a multiboot raspi gui to let people get one raspi with one sd card and toggle around the different functionality to see how awesome raspis are.

Cool, so you would need to pull in the images on booting

not really. like an sd card editor that could grab some stock images and set up multiboot or put them on usb and sort of chainload that with existing projects
7 hours ago, by hbdgaf
@Greg fair point. i just think it should have a button. my use case is, i have one pi. i want to try xmbc, definitely use it as a file server, and have the retrogame distro with all the kinks sorted out. if someone already did all the hard parts, i can then just say: switch boot option to file storage. reboot pi. rsync. when finished, reboot as xmbc because paying for TV is silly with all the streaming video providers.
^ I think that quote explains it.

@Mateo did you watch the videos?

@hbdgaf you too.

I saw the first one, andmost of the other, need to watch the rest

@Mateo yes, that image is a depend. that gui runs on the pi though, not on the host. so it's not a proper sd image editor and doesn't support many images to begin with.

Oh, on a host, that would be cool.

the project page is here: berryterminal.com/doku.php/berryboot , but i'm looking at making it even simpler. say you could tick boxes and have it push a multi-boot image to an sd card instead of having to run it on the raspi. that's where i'm going.
side-note: i now have hot water at home. yay.

5:42 PM
Maybe cache them, if want to provide diffrent versions of the same, would solve problemsof moving download pages, newer versins breaking, just to try and find archived download pages... posibally a list if you just want the one image of each - maintain the list...
@hbdgaf \o/

@Mateo i was thinking cached images, but automate the downloading/building/updating in qemu and check for errors with testing before updating the cache
so broken links don't immobilize the project or make people angry.

Yeah, gives a buffer
@RolandiXor I already put in money for one ;)

i'm walking away before i really fly off the handle about expressing my opinion on this one.

the stackoverflow chatrooms have a lot of egomaniacs. the linux chatrooms, superuser chatrooms, mathematics chatrooms, and others do not have the chatrooms full of condescending and disparaging commentary, or at least at the same degree as SO

It is like a competition to see who is better in something, instead of help between each other.

but if you go to unix forum, you dont get stuff like "ubuntu sucks" or "fedora sucks" or "centos sucks"

@JohnMerlino those people are not coders. A true coder does not care about the language. A true coder chooses the language he believes is fit for the task at hand. I myself several times decided it was best to use perl on some occasions where I never coded in perl. Just reading example codes I could create what I needed (a MySQL connector with some things that where specific for my task).
@JohnMerlino I do not understand a lot of the power of perl and why it is like it is but when I need specific things I can search for them

8:00 PM
@Alvar LOL
@Alvar Is it because of the ij?

@Takkat - I know you're big on the audio troubleshooting. I recently had a weird one where audio was glitched to muted and normal service restarts weren't working. I had to edit /etc/pulse/default.pa and turn off the three modules that deal with restoring device state, reboot, mute and unmute in both alsamixer and the sound control panel, uncomment the restore state lines, and reboot again.

I think it was related to a client.conf to make pulse not automatically restart when killed, but I can't replicate the problem now.

@hbdgaf yeah the device/stream restore modules are somewhat obscure.
They take parameters which are nowhere documented :/

anyone know why the brightness on 12.04 keeps resetting itself?

@mojo706 graphics issues I would say. Mine does it too.
After every suspend and shutdown/restart.
@MarcoCeppi around?
or @BrunoPereira ?

hey @Seth any workaround?

8:12 PM
Not that I know of...

:(

You might try changing your graphics drivers, but that's risky.
It never bothered me enough to try and fix it though ;)

@mojo706 Please be more specific. I have a new Nvidia card (kepler) and it requires also 310.x+ and a nvidiabl package for proper not-resetting brightness.

@Takkat i just thought "hey my device is in an inconsistent state...restoring that state would be quite silly", but i didn't see it as a troubleshooting step in my google-ing. i was just reading config files and guessing at that point.

@gertvdijk IntelHD 3000 is my graphics card if thats what you're asking

8:14 PM
@hbdgaf I remember my weirdest sound bug ever when I had no sound for one user only. Only solution (no conf editing helped) was to unplug my speakers, reboot, plug speakers back in. I believe this was an issue with some of the device restore features too.

@Seth if you find marco ask whether he removed login with persona on discourse.

@Takkat yeah, that sounds like an oddball jacksense bug. let me guess intel-hd audio? i think i had that bug too

@mojo706 I did
@Seth what's up?

@hbdgaf Pulseaudio sits very deep in the system. Yeah it's an Intel.

oh ok

@MarcoCeppi Could you also clean the comments up? The first two and the last one should stay, but the others can go.

@Takkat yeah, i turn it off from time to time to play games that don't bear the latency it introduces very well. however when it doesn't come back i always get all "oh noes. i breakeded it."

I was gonna say..

@Seth you hit enter at precisely the same time i clicked the reply button

8:17 PM
@hbdgaf pasuspend-er?

@hbdgaf lol

@Takkat i'll use that in the future. client.conf was a hacky workaround, and i didn't properly shut it down anyway with pulse -k i just killalled it. so i brought the problem on myself

^-- good grief. 66.

@hbdgaf never touch pulseaudio once it runs it all.

Now that Ubuntuforums is down we get all the troubleshooting questions here, I guess? :P

Hmm.
I use Geany for Python stuff.

I use the trial :p. My best are Python = Aptana Studio 3
PHP = Eclipse
HTML/CSS/JS = Sublime

someone get me more rep I need to retract close votes :(

lol

haha

10:15 PM
@mojo706 haha. No, it's about retracting your own close votes. If you can vote to close, you can retract them as well.
I wonder how it works when retracting the last in line. It is effectively closed the moment the last one votes.

hahaha

10:32 PM
Well I'm trying Eclipse.
I couldn't get Sublime's syntax highlighting to work with Java.
I'll need some time to get used to Sublime.

Q: Screen escape dollar sign

bogdansrcI'm trying to run a command using screen which contains the dollar sign, but the dollar sign does not get through. screen -d -m echo \$ > test.txt test.txt just ends up being an empty file...

@jrg why?
@Seth hmmm

jrg
@mojo706 plugins don't support it yet.
