@NathanOsman pls

12:24 AM
blorps some more
@TheWanderer why the heck did you submit it...
i mean seriously

@ThomasWard it's in private alpha so @NathanOsman and I can share the signing key

ah, that's why.
@TheWanderer you all need separate signing keys, are you saying it's not possible to use multiple signing keys?
or, do you need a neutral third party to hold signing keys

you can't use multiple signing keys

and therefore just have you as devs.

wat

12:32 AM
you heard me. Do you need to simply not have any signing keys and only have one single person with a signing key
rather than you two sharing :p

why

points at the rejection email
your submission is why
they rejected because the key is shared lol

no they didn't
the key is uploaded to Google Play because they manage it now

shrugs

and they rejected it because IP violation

12:40 AM
well they rejected it so blah
don't submit again.
in any case
wait, IP violation, that's an intellectual property violation

We're going to have to talk to SE to get written permission if we can
even though I don't think it is IP violation

yeah you'll have to, you have no choice
@TheWanderer do you use "StackExchange" the wording anywhere?
do you use the StackExchange logo anywhere?
anything that's the property of SE?

we use the Stack Exchange logo and word on the login activity

^ that's the IP violation

but this is stuff that I need @NathanOsman here for!

12:41 AM
the logo is trademarked

@ThomasWard we never claimed it was ours

doesn't matter

and it got accepted the first time lol

the law is chaos :P
but it's law :P
well I have your code, and the android studio and virtual android i'm using

I wonder if we can get permission to use the logos

12:43 AM
Let's worry about this after the darn thing actually works

probably. you'll have to add a "Legal" section to your application, and list all the legal items you're using.
but let's NOT publish the application until it works
Alpha or not

IT ISNT PUBLISHED GAH

Currently messing around with trying to use Nathan's GO API in the app...

so you avoid the IP hammer.

it's just uploaded

12:44 AM
point.missed

use.correct.terminology

Lol

i'mma go rest a bit i've been drinking :)

I saw that :P

found some nice stuff in the fridge downstairs... mmmmmmmm

1:43 AM
HOLY SMOKES... IT ACTUALLY WORKS.

wat

I just ran some Go code inside an Android app

And you know what that means...

are you making the chat work?

1:45 AM
@TheWanderer Well, I guess that depends on whether or not @NathanOsman ever comes back to educate me on how to use his library

srsly pls
@NathanOsman
STAHP

Stop what?

THE EDIT SPAM

Eh?

you edited that message 5 times
and I got pinged every time

1:47 AM
Oh, sorry

2:08 AM
SYNC YOUR PROJECTS EVERYONE

@TheWanderer Not doing that right now, as I just got Nathan's Go API to compile :)
This is looking promising.

@AndroidDev well you won't be able to push

@TheWanderer seriously, stop pinging Nathan. It's quite rude. I'm sure he will reply when he has time.

where is he?

@TheWanderer No, no, the Go project is an entirely different app; I'm just saying that I'm not working on your app ATM

2:11 AM
@AndroidDev ahhh

@TheWanderer Out having a life?

psh
developer with a life?

2:42 AM
@RobotHumans just saw this on twitter --^

2:53 AM
that moment when music starts to play and you're like "ok, this is ok" then it turns out that was the intro to the ad -.-

hue

@TheWanderer OH MY GOSH!!! IT ACTUALLY WORKS!!!

ORLY

@TheWanderer --^

ooh

2:59 AM
This is ridiculous! I can't believe it actually worked!

@AndroidDev don't you just love that feeling
also don't you just love go?

@Seth Never used it before, lol. Just using Nathan's code

@AndroidDev Oh :(

@Seth Well, I had a heck of a time getting this running inside an Android app, soo yeah I'm happy that it's working :)

@AndroidDev Awesome! I'll need to use it eventually too.
So I'm glad someone else did the hard work :P
Although I thought Google did a lot of work to make go code run on Android..

3:03 AM
@Seth Shall we go for the acid test? (Seeing if it'll post a message from the Android app)

@AndroidDev Definitely!

@Seth OK, here goes. It might take a minute

Q: If the astronauts on Apollo 11 had landed safely on the moon but could not take off, would there have been a rescue mission?

DiskdriveSay they landed on the moon but discovered the ship was damaged during the landing and they could not launch again. What would have been the plan? Would another crew have been sent to rescue them? Would the astronauts just have to wait till they ran out of supplies to die or was there a procedur...

This was sent from Go code on Android

whoa, super interesting.
@AndroidDev Wooh!

3:06 AM
NO WAY!!!

@AndroidDev INTEGRATE

@TheWanderer Uhm about that.... if I do, then it won't build for you until you install a bunch of other stuff

>_>
maybe we need to do it in Java then...

@TheWanderer Well the thought was that since Nathan has already written all the code in Go....
@TheWanderer So what are your honest thoughts about this?
Should we really spend the time to rewrite it in Java?

idk really
we need nathan

3:13 AM
Hey, do you wanna try and see if it'll send a message from your account too? That would be fun :D
I can give you the APK

am slep

Huh?
Why U no use proper grammar?
And/or spelling

@AndroidDev what exactly did you have to do to get it working on Android?

@Seth Well, just setting up Go Mobile took forever because their documentation is incomplete, and I had to go digging deep with Google to figure out how to set it up properly, and then I had to mess with the environment variables, and then it couldn't find the NDK... And I also discovered that you have to gradle sync before you can reference any Go code
And I'm still not sure how the modules are setup
I haven't been able to successfully create a new one, only use the default "Hello" module
I copied and pasted it, but Gradle didn't build the ARR...

hm, interesting.

3:24 AM
@Seth Do you want to test the APK?

@AndroidDev I'm too busy to really be of much help right now, sorry.

3:39 AM
Another test from Go on Android...
Yet Another test from Go on Android...

w00t

Mmmkay, so extremely basic app is working
Last test...
Testing SE chat from Nathan's API
Cool!

3:56 AM
hi

random thought of the day: What if social networks worked like Telegram "channels"? You can post updates and stuff to a read only channel all your friends/family can subscribe to. But if they wanted to reply/talk about something you posted they would have to actually reach out to you using another method.

social networks would die imo
How bad is it to wait for a file modification to have a little command run?

@Anwar makes me wonder how social you're actually being.

I'm totally unsocial tbh :)
And I agree that social networks don't make people more social

4:14 AM
hmm.. inotify based solution worked for pantheon-files
works with caja too!
@KazWolfe you were right. Caja seems to write directly to the file without invoking the command-line tool

5:09 AM
@Seth hahahah

This one just came up in a feed img-9gag-fun.9cache.com/photo/a2rXKGD_460s.jpg
If programming languages were weapons. Even python takes a hit, everyone takes a hit. So, no bias.

I love the PHP one.

They were all pretty great.
Even as a python fanboi, I found the python double barrel to be incredibly funny.

Hi guys, just a quick one, I am dealing with a compromised system where a password has been changed... it is just a honeypot/nothing big... however, I did cat on a file I shouldn't, and it has messed up the prompt/keystrokes are all weird...
in this case, I usually log out and back in, but, I obviously can't... Is there an easy way to get it back to normal?

user136984
9:01 AM
@WilliamHilsum: If you don't use any sort of encryption for the system you could try using a Live Session to manually change the shadow file?

Hello :)

@cl-netbox: Good, I feel really good and fresh this morning! :)

user136984
I had a great night's sleep!

@ParanoidPanda Glad to read this ! :) Did you spend a nice weekend ? weather was great here - in London as well ? :)

user136984
@cl-netbox: Yes, it was very nice over here, we had a bit of rain yesterday, but I quite like that actually because everything grows much better and smells good too! :)

user136984
9:18 AM
Nice long walks in the park too.

@ParanoidPanda Nice ! :) Well, nature needs water, so rain is always useful ... though not too much - I like the sunshine ! :)

user136984
@cl-netbox: I say that if it's rainy today, then the future will be sunny, if it's sunny today, the future will be rainy! :D

user136984
Because actually in order to have a full day with no rain and just nice got sunshine the plants need to have had a lot of rain stored up in order to cope well.

@ParanoidPanda true ... wise words ! :)

that's Henry

@ParanoidPanda haha, out here we leave the Thyme part off ;p

2:52 PM
hello

how are you doing?

reasonably well, you?

all good, vacations ending in a couple of days

happens.

2:56 PM
it's alright, I enjoy my "routine" when I'm working too

i took some time recently, wasn't really a vacation though. needed to reallocate effort since i'm writing tests faster than they're writing features. so i'm working myself out of a paycheck.

you write unit tests for some application?

yes.
not really unit tests though. more like "confirmation of specific feature behavior"

cool! I should learn to write some decent tests, I'm pretty lame at writing tests for my own projects

i generally don't, because i manually test my own code and only run it personally. so, there's not 20k on the line

3:02 PM
I know, but the few tests I forced myself to write were quite helpful at tracking bugs

say, how is the game coming @RobotHumans?

@IanC Hey there - nice to see you Ian ! :) How are you doing ? Didn't see you here for some time ... :)

@cl-netbox hey man! All have been good, have been gone for a while because I'm still living a bit like a cave man (a happy cave man though :D)

@Seth skipped it. i'll come back to it later. been toying with quantopian more. crowd sourced hedgefund. write an algo that wins, it's permanent passive income. so, implement all the strategies you can and see what works.

still no internet on home, I'm on my folks so I decided to log in for a bit

3:04 PM
@Seth Didn't get the joke ... Hi Seth ! :) Can you explain it to me ? Maybe I'm too blind ?

@cl-netbox "I got a new pot plant"
out here pot is slang for cannabis.

@Seth aaahhh ... now I understand ... hahaha :D sure : pot ... I remember - but it's a long time ago ! :D

that's part of the joke i think. pot plant being a synonym for potted plant. and we're back to british english is the right english or not >.>

user136984
@Seth :D

@RobotHumans pot plant ... is that British English ?

3:07 PM

@cl-netbox sadly, i'm in the US, and have to learn both ;)

@RobotHumans absolutely no problem ... I'm in Germany - but I'm used to US English ! :D

@cl-netbox german has the best frankenwords

@RobotHumans frankenwords ? what is it ? :)

a frankenstein is when you bolt unrelated things together in to some sort of living thing. a frankenword is when you bolt unrelated words together to form this highly descriptive word the other languages don't have
overly used to also describe other words that other languages don't have too, like schadenfreude

3:13 PM
@RobotHumans thank you for explaining - something like kindergarden (Kindergarten in German) - right ? :)

totally. yes, i don't know german.

@RobotHumans it's a difficult to learn and somewhat strange language (German) ... :D

I'm not sure it's strange. It's like the the difference between long red bus and bus long red. That's English and EVERY EURO LANGUAGE, but americans complain about it.
I'm not saying with minimal review I think German specifically and non-english european languages are better, but generally that's exactly what I'm saying.

Well, I think English generally is the best language to use, simply because most people in the world can communicate in this language ... be it British or US English ...

I like English for it's versatility, but I like other languages for their rational approach to clause construction

3:21 PM
yes, true - I agree ! :)

it's cool. taking a minute

@IanC what does this mean ? is the flat you bought a cave ? :D
@IanC or is this the reason why you call your own flat a cave ? :)

@TheWanderer ohai

OMG
HES ALIVE

Dude. I just took a break for a day.
So. What's this about Google rejecting our app.

3:33 PM
had the SE logo and name in it
so I removed them

IN the app?

yeah
Even SE says not to do that though

We can't use the term "Stack Exchange" in any strings?

we can refer to them

We do have permission from Stack Exchange to use their logo in the app.

3:34 PM
but you had it as basically the title of the app
we do?
you need to upload that to Google then

> "Do feel free to use names or logos for the purpose of labeling our sites within your product, as long as use of such logos could not be confused with the branding or endorsement of the product itself."
Straight from Stack Exchange ---^

well we need to talk to Google about that

"Chat Exchange" is also allowed .
> "Do name your application with something unique. Including one of the terms, "Stack" or "Exchange" or "Overflow" in your product name is generally okay."
So Google is being weird here.
Trust me. I already looked into all this.

yeah Chat Exchange is fine
but we need to upload proof of permission

Hi @NathanOsman :)

So I actually was able to post a message to this room last night from an Android app!

3:37 PM
Which one?

One that I created. I used your Go chat API
I have the APK if you wanna try it

Whoa - cool.
Does my Go package work well?
I only ever used it for my chat bot.

I only used the functions to post a message and list the users, so no idea really
See the message on the starwall
13 hours ago, by Android Dev
This was sent from Go code on Android

@NathanOsman so you should really check out the app
Google has the latest version now that I removed the SE stuff

I'm going to side with ThomasWard here; don't even bother putting it on Google
Until it works

3:41 PM
no one can install it

but there's no point

@cl-netbox it's because I've no internet so far, so I'm a bit offline for most of the time

@AndroidDev yes there is. We both need the keystore and Google has it saved for download

@TheWanderer @NathanOsman Here's the APK if either of you want to try it. Keep in mind it has no error handling and will fail silently, so make sure you type in your login credentials correctly :) drive.google.com/file/d/0B-V1bipqDdfkNE83ZHYyODNxcTg/…

funny how just a few months makes you feel so out of date with technology, so many things happened
I go out for a couple of months and they launch one of the biggest ransomwares on the internet, it's like I left the house alone with the kids and came back to it on fire
lol

3:46 PM
@IanC Meh, the media has blown it way out of proportion.

lol

Indeed.

@IanC understand ... what is the reason for having no internet connection ?

@AndroidDev yeah, media usually does that, but I think it was a big deal, heard of big companies being affected by it

@NathanOsman So there are a couple of problems with using your Go API in the app. 1) It gets compiled to native code, which means you have to have the NDK and everything.... and 2) It might make it a little more difficult to work with

3:49 PM
@cl-netbox I don't know, still sorting some basic stuff there, and I didn't mind saving some money by not installing internet yet :p

@NathanOsman So I guess the question becomes, how hard would it be to port your API to Java, and would it be worth the effort?

and we're back to that advantage provided by jython

@AndroidDev @TheWanderer and I are basically doing that right now.
I've already ported the auth code.

@NathanOsman and now you need to do the rest :p

@NathanOsman think you meant we bud. think you meant we are.

3:54 PM
I've made it so we can add chats, and it gets their titles and icons

@AndroidDev I started working on an HTTP bridge. Bascially, you compile a Go app for ARM with the Go compiler and then run that in a Process. The app provides an HTTP API that Java can use.

yikes lol

I'll have to pull later but I need to fix some stuff in NitroShare now.
macOS is doing weird stuff with TLS.

macOS is just doing weird stuff

True enough.

3:56 PM
macOS is doing weird stuff with TLS.

Then there's my Raspberry Pis. I don't even want to go there. Systemd has really messed that up.

@NathanOsman Ah. So that would eliminate the need for using the NDK and all the crazy stuff required to call the Go code directly from Java then, right?

That was my idea.

might have made a mistake and missed an and in there somewhere, just for reference. @NathanOsman

I can even point you to the code I started for the Go app.

3:57 PM
sure

@NathanOsman Name it ChatExchange-Go or something like that IMO. There's already a set of libraries with that name so it'd provide visibility to yours

@NathanOsman - One thing to keep in mind is that we'll have to compile it for ARM, ARM64 and x86 and then decide which binary to invoke at runtime

search optimizations might also honor Go-StackExchange. which would be both clever and friendly.
