@cl-netbox ok I installed 17.04, the touchpad now works as expected but the sound is still only coming from the left speaker
@cl-netbox oh and 17.04 has kernel version 4.10.0-11-generic

@Thijser I have an idea : why don't you report it as a bug on launchpad ? Maybe they can fix it fast so that it is working properly in the final version of zesty. :)

@Seth LG G6 giveaway on this page xda-developers.com/…

@cl-netbox good idea, what information do you think I should include?

@Thijser great ! :)
@Thijser exactly what we both were discussing including the facts from your question. :)

@Zanna Maybe I really should change my name...

3:11 PM
@Thijser additionally we get the chance that more users with the same problem join the discussion on launchpad and add their experiences and ideas. :)

@AndroidDev did you get pinged? :/ sorry

I can contect a few

@Zanna Yeah :)

@Thijser and in the end it indeed is a bug, because you made a default install and it simply doesn't work as it should.
@Thijser good idea ! :) the more people contribute, the faster it gets fixed because the importance will rise ! :)

Hey, today's my 1 year mark on AU :)

3:15 PM
@AndroidDev Congratulations ! :)

@AndroidDev congratulations, and you have a lot more karma than I do
Do you think this can be linked to a specific package?

@Thijser pulseaudio I would guess could be the most suitable one
@Thijser What makes me wonder is that it is always only the left speaker which is working - are there any options in the BIOS settings ?

Wouldn't that equally effect windows 10?
I can take a look of course, moment

@Thijser maybe yes - maybe not ... sound things are tricky
@Thijser Although this time (17.04) only the left speaker works - in 16.10 it was the subwoofer which was working only - right ? The settings changes you made are gone, because you made a fresh installation.

3:30 PM
correct

@Thijser weird ... obviously a bug ... I am running out of ideas ... so launchpad is the next and best option ... one thing : please show me the output from aplay -l

$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC255 Analog [ALC255 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice
subdevices: 1/1 ?

@Thijser That looks very strange ... there is a lot missing there ... look at my output :
cl@cl-uw-1:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
Subdevices: 1/1

Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: VT1802 Analog [VT1802 Analog]

I think those are the outgoing connections it thinks it has

@Thijser where is your HDMI ??? where is your subwoofer ???

3:35 PM
internal but perhaps not detected?

@Thijser open alsamixer please

I just did

@Thijser you have a problem ... no HDMI you can switch to ... the whole device is not detected correctly ... that's why the settings we tried didn't work

Looking in addiontal drivers there is now one unkown device that's missing a driver

@Thijser which one ?

3:39 PM
I'm going to see what happens if I turn that on

@Thijser that is for the CPU - latest intel microcode loaded at boot

ok so that shouldn't matter, (I did just turn it on, should I turn it off again)

@Thijser leave it on and reboot ... maybe the newer firmware lets the drivers detect the sound chip correctly - who knows ? I use that microcode drivers always ... never had a problem

alright moment

@Thijser after reboot aplay -l again please

3:46 PM
$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****

@Thijser which sound card model do you have ? that thing is not recognized correctly

hmm how can I easily check?

@Thijser in the product specs from Acer ... we need to know the vendor ...

Ah when you search for my model of laptop the first hit (for me) is my question about speakers
Here is the vender by the way

Synergy is a cool program

3:53 PM
@Thijser look at this -> duckduckgo.com/…

@Zacharee1 sure is. I even paid for a license :-)

wow
I don't use it enough for that

every day and across all kinds of systems.
heck I even use it to mess with my co-workers systems :D

@cl-netbox yes you might recognice the username of the person who asked the first question

Q: using IPv6 Multicast to push a file

CaleI would like to push a file over the network once to reach multiple linux hosts over IPv6 using multicast. (I think, that's the best way) How can I get my file pushed over IPv6 to multiple systems? I am running under ubuntu 14.04

3:55 PM
@Rinzwind lol

@Thijser yes hahaha
@Rinzwind Hi Rinzy ! :)

hey boxy
not staying long :-)

Hmm their fact sheet is not specifying anything about audio except for "2 speakers, 1 subwoofer and a microphone"

@Thijser I guess the sound chip might be from Realtek
@Thijser I have another idea to sort things out ... boot from ubuntu install media and check if it works there ... if not : boot from a fedora live media and check if it works there - okay ? I search for the newest ISO

OK someone from acer is looking up the exact sound card but apparently that's not something they have anywhere easily accessible.

4:04 PM
@Thijser good ... please wait ... I search the ISO

VGA Chip nVidia N17E-G2-A1 GP104-725-A1
(that's an intergrated audio card)

user136984
@cl-netbox: Is that issue you messaged me about fixed? ;)

@ParanoidPanda Hi my friend ... checking ... yeah fixed ... back in the list ! :)

user136984
@cl-netbox: Great! :)

OK so it seems that they are streaming the audio through the graphics card (according to the acer support)

4:10 PM
@Thijser they have no idea what they are talking about ... absolutely no idea ... that is bullshit ! The sound chip is solded into the mainboard ... that is a video thing ... OMG

I had a sneaky suspicion about that

@Thijser Please download -> dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/live-respins/… create an USB ... boot the live desktop and check the sound

I suspect it's because part of the machine specification he had in front of him said that the motherboard number included gtx 1070 so when I mentioned that I didn't think the graphics card was part of the motherboard he answered that it contained several important chips including audio and graphics

@Thijser yes the graphics chip is also integrated in the mainboard but that has got nothing to do with the sound chip ... that man should go into a bakery and "work" there !
@Thijser Let's look forward ... please try the fedora live test ... tell me if it works ... play a video in firefox ... and also copy the output from aplay -l

I think that he is just working from a script and that "what exact part is inside my laptop" was probably already pushing it, expecting him to know what each part means might have been a step to far
working on it, just finished the download

4:20 PM
@Thijser I cross my fingers ... I really want that chip to work for you as soon as possible

hmm the startup disk creator isn't working
(doesn't recognice the fedora iso

@Thijser use disks- do you know how ?

looking up how to do it

@Thijser here you can see how to do it -> askubuntu.com/questions/758658/…

and now we wait

4:26 PM
@Thijser okay - so my description was easy enough ... good ... now I am VERY excited if the sound works in fedora ! :)

(threw in an upvote)

@Thijser thank you very much ! :)

ok let's try this

@Thijser little break ... I'm back in 5 minutes :)

hmm it's not recognizing the usb

4:34 PM
@Thijser choose the entry with UEFI in front

At what point? It doesn't recognize any other boot then grub or windows boot? Or while creating the usb?

@Thijser when you boot the PC ... in BIOS ... select to boot from USB ... choose the entry with UEFI in front

There is only one such entry in BIOS and that points to grub

@Thijser then maybe the iso was defect ... try again with the older one -> download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/releases/25/…

ok give me a minute to download it
(9 mb/s where earlier today windows was only managing 700kb, wtf?)
(*36 mg/s now)
creating life usb

4:44 PM
@Thijser okay ... thing is that this was the final iso from November 2016 with older kernel ... but we'll see

OK let's go
same problem
It should work the same as when using an ubuntu life usb right?

@Thijser yes sure ... I always create the USB that way ... it NEVER failed

my machine is "special"

@Thijser then it MUST be a setting in BIOS

not really a setting I could find that wouldn't result in also disabling ubuntu
(boot mode legacy, I can define a boot order, enable secure boot, turn boot sound off,a bunch of password related stuff)

5:00 PM
@Thijser first of all : disable secure boot (won't affect Windows) ... then select to boot from USB ... reboot and boot from USB

secure boot is disabled, boot from usb is not an option but I can set the boot order which already places usb on top
I can select what I want to boot as with f12 which allows me to either select grub or windowsboot right now (but grub can also go into windowsboot)

@Thijser what the hell are those Acer guys doing ... the fedora USB should boot the same way as it did when you installed ubuntu

We can try and see what happens if I overwrite this usb with an ubuntu 16.04 iso

@Thijser okay

OK let's see if an ubuntu 16.04 usb created in the same way will be detected
that didn' t work, I created that last working usb with rufus so let' s see if that is able to work

5:10 PM
@Thijser try the first fedora iso I gave you

yes that' s what I' m doing

@Thijser :) by the way ... this Acer machine seems to be a VERY VERY SPECIAL one ... hahaha :)
@Thijser okay ... fun aside ... hope that you can boot the fedora USB and that (hopefully) the sound works correctly ... then we have a good point to start. :)

Just a bit more

@Thijser means what ? :)

that I was downloading the fedora iso and that took a while
windows was moving at a speed of about 1mb/s where ubuntu was doing 30 mb/s
At least they managed to screw up both operating systems
ok let' s go

5:22 PM
@Thijser excitement rises on my side ! :D

has the excitement reached a climax yet?
fedora started, mouse did not work and aplay -l output was the same as on ubuntu

@Thijser okay ... then we know now that it is a "buggy" pulseaudio thing ... what I never asked : does it work perfectly in Windows ?

hmm I didn't notice a problem but I haven't used windows that often so let's check!

@Thijser great ... when it works properly in Windows then we know that it is a "linux / pulseaudio /ubuntu" issue and can file the bug report on launchpad ! :)

Yes it works on windows 10
(nice background sound)

5:34 PM
@Thijser okay ... so here we go : please create the bug report with all information about what you have tested so far ! :)

ok is this still a pulseaudio thing or is there something wrong with some other package?

@Serg does your mksh really have readlink as a builtin? Are you sure? Mine doesn't.

@Thijser no I don't think so ... of course I am not sure whether other packages or dependencies are involved too, but that is the job of the developers to find out.
@Thijser I am very sorry that all my attempts and ideas couldn't solve your sound problems ... but I really tried my best ... let's hope that devs will solve it soon ... :)

Let's hope so
Thank you for your help

@Thijser You are very welcome ! :)

5:43 PM
@Serg your comment mentions readlink, not realpath which is what you meant and what is used in the answer.

Hi terdon ! :) Good afternoon to you ! :)

Hi

@Thijser When the bug report is finished, please give me the link ... I'll check whether we would have to add something. :)

@Akiva I rolled back your edit since it really isn't fair to add requirements in the middle like that. That said, come into chat and I'd be happy to give you a solution for that requirement.

Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 16.10 and a fresh install of 17.04 and even fedora F25-WORK-x86_64-20170228 via live usb Device: acer predator: G9-593-7757 15,6"/i7-7700/32 GB RAM/512 GB SSD/1 TB HDD/GTX1070 expected: sound comes out of both left and right speaker and the subwoofer what happened instead: Sound only comes out of the left speaker or subwoofer. Q: How to make HD mount at startup in Ubuntu? Disks tool isn't working

Dakota WagnerI go into the Disks tool, and select the drive and select "mount at startup" and "show user interface", but it doesn't do it at reboot, ever. My Steam game library is on there so its difficult to go and mount it every time I want to play a game.

@Akiva Hi! So, what do you need to escape exactly?

@terdon As said, mind if I just start a new question? I do agree, it is a lot more complicated to add the escapes. Best to keep that question simple and straight forward.

@Akiva Sure, ask a new one but if you want a shell script to escape everything for you, don't bother.

ah you are that meme guy on meta.
hello there

ha

5:51 PM
Won't be possible and it really isn't worth it. Just quote all the things.

@Thijser wow that was fast ... well done ... please add that it works in Windows perfectly fine. :)

\o
o/

@terdon Exactly? I'm dealing with with wikipedia page titles. That can include ( if it isn't encoded for http) quotes, spaces, colons, parentheses... Not fun.

@Akiva Double quotes?

@cl-netbox ok added the information

5:53 PM
And why are you using the shell, if so? There is no way to escape single quotes in the shell.
Well, only by putting them in double quotes, that is.

@terdon Those too, but I think single quotes with a sed command is the best option. I had to do something similar, and it was not pretty.

@Akiva There is no way to escape both single and double quotes. Time to switch to a more powerful language or use shell globs.

@terdon ummmmm i'm using shell and qt. I'd like to know how to do it in shell just for reference sake.

@Akiva Can't :)

@terdon Not escape, but you can sanitize the string.
sec
i'll show you...

5:55 PM
Only by removing the single quotes.

echo $woostring | sed 's/'\''/'\''\\'\'\''/g; s/∪/'\''/g'

@Thijser good ... now ask the other users having the same problems you talked about to confirm the bug. :)

@Akiva Yeah, that's horrible, as you said :) And it isn't escaping or even sanitizing the single quotes. It's just skipping them.

@terdon if I recall, I spent something like 14 hours trying to get that sed to work. Hasn't given me issues though since.
ha ha. If I recall, it parses the single quotes, creates strings for each of them, and then concatenates.

@Akiva Won't work for files, I'm afraid. Here:
$ woostring="\"foo\" 'bar' b∪z"
$ touch "$woostring"
$ name=$(echo $woostring | sed 's/'\''/'\''\\'\'\''/g; s/∪/'\''/g')
$ cp "$name" fixed
cp: cannot stat '"foo" '\''\'\'''\''bar'\''\'\'''\'' b'\''z': No such file or directory
$ ls
'"foo" '\''bar'\'' b∪z'
Single quotes can't be escaped. So \' isn't anything special.
Try, for example:
aa='single\' quote'
That fails.
From man bash:
   Enclosing characters in single quotes preserves the literal value of
   each character within the quotes. A single quote may not occur between
   single quotes, even when preceded by a backslash.

6:04 PM
@terdon I think it is for a special usecase which was about transferring arguments over ssh, which required me to use quotes within quotes... it was all very complicated that I can't explain, I was just sharing because I found what you said astutely humorous and true. As said, i'll start a new question later today. Thanks for the feedback.

@terdon sorry, mixing up them because they all start with rea . . .readlink , realpath . . .@_@ all blurs together

@Serg I know. Took me a while to figure it out too!
@Akiva You might want to consider asking on Unix & Linux instead. There are many more CLI junkies experts over there. And especially when it comes to this sort of thing.

^lol, okay have a good one.

if someone clicks the "reply" button here do you get an error message?

@cl-netbox ok that should at least be 5 people I notified
@Seth
This posting has expired.

6:06 PM
wat
it loads for me

cache?
DNS stuff?

I tried it in another browser..

if you use tor to access it?

@Thijser a craigslist post expiring shouldn't have anything to do with DNS..

@Seth if it expired on what server but not the other
same

6:08 PM
@Thijser oh that's possible.

Try using tor to access it from another country?

This posting has been deleted by its author.

@Thijser eh, I don't have the time for that.
oh, forgot to refresh that one before sending it.

@Seth it takes 2 minutes to do (torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html.en download the right version => open it)

6:09 PM
@Thijser this is probably what happened..

@Thijser good ... I wanna say that I appreciate your effort very much ... what you are doing is a great contribution to the ubuntu / linux community - really ! :)

@cl-netbox let's hope it works and the devs are able to fix this before 17.04

@Thijser yes I hope so as well ! :)
@Seth What is this Seth ? I get : This posting has expired.

@cl-netbox Craiglist is acting weird for me. I was trying to reply to a listing but I kept getting a random error. Seems like there's a caching issue in one of the US servers :)

@Seth ah, okay :)

6:22 PM
@Seth Seems likely, I think both me and cl-netbox are calling in from europe

yeah. I did end up installing tor so lets see

@Thijser Yes - I am in Germany. :)

It's a pity though because it was a good monitor and a good price :/

I already thought so but wasn't 100%

well. craigslist blocks tor :P

6:26 PM
@Seth I tried it with Chrome. :)

so, in other news, i stayed up till 4 am studying for exam only to realize it is on Thursday

awww :( hope you get more sleep tonight

@_@ what is sleep, baby dont snooze me, dont snooze me, no moar

@Serg hey now you already know your stuff and won't fall asleep during the exam

I can't find the imageshack image :(

6:32 PM
@jokerdino fine for me

@Thijser unless i forget everything i studied by thursday

Looks like a calander to me

sleep, we need to break up, things arent working out between us.

Anyway time for me to go
@Serg you should see what happens if you close your eyes while laying on your back in a bed

But luckily we may still stare into your pretty eyes at least...

At least the right side panel icons are all OK

@Serg F5 and they won't

@ByteCommander F5-ed, I think my cache still hasn't been reset,and even when Kaz showed up, i can see his icon

Or you meet a strange man with sonic sunglasses and a blue police call box...

@ByteCommander sonic... sunglasses?

Today I watched episode "Heaven sent" btw.
@KazWolfe Yup. Capaldi lost/gave away (?) his screwdriver and switched to "wearables" instead.

@ByteCommander Processing... ERROR

It was in that episode where he's on the Dalek home planet.
The episode with Colony Sarff, that snake human.
Where he makes a party in a medieval city and drives into the arena on a tank, playing the e-guitar
I just forgot the episode name...
So anyway, he has sonic sunglasses at the moment.

@KazWolfe It's actually quite cool. They keep them just long enough that it's new and then he gets another screwdriver.
(oops, might be a spoiler?)

9:18 PM
(i havent started watching yet honestly)

Is it true that the latest episode currently is Hell bent from end of 2015?
Or is that page where I was looking up the recap just a bit outdated?
Ooh, the icons are back
I have a face again

Looks like a lingering issue from a CloudFlare outage earlier had some bad DNS effects. HTTPS images are back online.

what I said
you're late

How's that for an edit summary?
At least it was mine, on my post.

Wow.
So, my chat package for Go needs a way to figure out which users are in a room.
There is no API method for doing this, but the data is present in individual chat pages.
So I used goquery to parse the DOM and extract all the JavaScript as text.
Then I used Otto, which lets me create an AST from the JavaScript.
Then I wrote some code to walk through the AST and pull out the information.
And it works.
Whew.

Heh, nice.

If anyone wants to see how hideous this is: github.com/nathan-osman/go-sechat/blob/master/javascript.go

i think there is an api method for that, nathan.
