2:05 PM
Yay!

rubs hands together in joyous anticipation of Arch install

@Zanna Congrats in advance for the new "toast machine" ! :D

thanks! idk where I'm going to put the thing though - it's the biggest "laptop" I've ever seen

@Zanna arch ? not ubuntu ?
@Zanna 17" widescreen monitor ?

something like that. He calls it a laptop, I call it a home cinema

2:11 PM
@Zanna Nice knowing you.

@Zanna hahaha ... I have such "cinemas" too ... 3 desktop replacements (17") in my house ... :)

@jokerdino are you ditching me for betrayal, or expecting it to be fatal?

We shall meet, if you managed to return.

Hey, @jokerdino, could you post the output of cat /etc/os-release please?

Bye guys. I got some stuff to do. waves

2:15 PM
hahahahah

@terdon laptop ? I would call it "power horse" ! :D

@cl-netbox Bit of both. But it's a 14inch screen and ~1.5 kg or so, it's a laptop alright.

@terdon rofl

@terdon kernel 4.9.8 ? I have kernel 4.9.10 on fedora ... isn't arch known to be bleeding edge ? :D

Yeah, haven't updated in a few days. Doing so now and it is installing linux-4.9.11-1

2:17 PM
woot

@terdon next week we'll get 4.10.1 I assume :)

Dunno. I don't really care much about kernel releases unless they fix a hardware bug I'm facing.

@terdon same with me, although there are fixes and improvements under the hood in every release ... optimizes system reliability and performance, which makes it a good idea to have the latest stable kernel installed - right ? :)

Unless it introduces regressions which has been known to happen.
But yeah, I install it when it becomes available. I just don't follow the details much.

2:23 PM
I don't follow the details mostly as well ...

I need to install a newer kernel, the 4.8s are DOA for me since 4.8.0-34
I'm thinking I'll just install 17.04 beta

@Zanna 4.8.0-39 is the newest

@cl-netbox I know, and it's still DOA

@Zanna the flavors have 4.10 ! :)

I'm on MATE, what flavor are you talking about?

2:25 PM
@Zanna is mate an official one ? checked it : YES -> cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-mate/daily-live/current so enjoy kernel 4.10 ! :)

Mate didnt take part in the beta 1 phase - but yeah - the daily will have kernel 4.10 now

@Zanna direct-link -> cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-mate/daily-live/current/… Format the EFI partition and the root partition before to get rid of your 32-bit thingies ! :)
@fossfreedom Hi David ! :) Something new from budgie ? :)

everything is new ... its the first official release!

@fossfreedom exciting adventure - right ? :)

not sure about "exciting" - certainly an interesting adventure.

2:32 PM
Budgie could be an interesting alternative for you @Zanna -> cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-budgie/daily-live/current/… ! :)

if you are interested - this is the first beta 1 video I've seen that gives you an idea of what budgie looks like - youtube.com/watch?v=oxo2sgUKaV8

@fossfreedom I checked out original budgie (solus) since edition 1.0 in a virtual machine and quite liked what I experienced there ... the latest install ISOs are having a "display issue" though ... I'm not able to switch to 1920 x 1080 on Live media or vdisk installation anymore. :)

$ yaourt -S budgie-desktop

Wha!? That's tiny!
Presumably because I have cinnamon installed which has already brought in the various gnome dependencies. But still!

@cl-netbox dont forget to let them know on their issues tracker called "phabricator" otherwise they can't fix what they dont know...!

2:48 PM
@fossfreedom Well, the thing is that it might not be very constructive to only report something and then not continue to constantly help improving the software by continuous testing ... my main systems are fedora and (original) ubuntu. :)

Budgie sure looks amazing

@Serg the raven side bar is cool

@cl-netbox Yeah, it's something like in Deepin, which is what I like

@Serg Forgot to say Hi my friend ! :)

@cl-netbox Good morning ! :D

2:52 PM
@cl-netbox Budgie could be my DE on Arch :)

@fossfreedom now, small question here: since I've heard Budgie is supposed to go with Qt instead of Gtk ( or something along the lines, because GNOME developers are constantly changing things ), how does Budgie store user configurations/settings ? Is it still gsettings ?

Currently with 10.x yes - gsettings

So it's going to change in future, right ?

to configure the desktop itself? maybe. No code yet in this area has been written.

Got it. Will be interesting to see how this develops.

2:58 PM
v10.3 is the next immediate version. That will give upstream breathing space to develop v11 in a much more sane timescale

@Serg I read that Qt is not considered for 17.04 ! :)

17.04 will use 10.2.9
i.e. GTK based

I've wanted to learn programming in Qt for some time. Did a couple small programs in PyQt4. I guess Budgie will be a good excuse for me to pick it up again :)

Q: What is the new attack on SHA-1 "SHAttered" and how does it work?

SEJPMThere's a new recent Attack on SHA-1 named "SHAttered" by Google and some researchers. I understand that it uses some fancy new techniques, but not the details. My question is: How? How does the attack work (on a high level)? How does it compare to previous attacks? Note: The matter of implica...

<---clueless

@Zanna nope

thanks!
it seems to be being used for questions about and but also when the question is so aimless the asker can't find a tag

3:44 PM
So, Tony George's indicator-diskman got updated. Looks like he's learned from my udisks-indicator, since diskman now has usage menu entry, and guess what . . .it uses UTF-8 squares to implement that. :D Oh, and he's also added icons,too

@Serg Did he pay you for the copyright ? :D

@cl-netbox Meh, the idea isn't really copyright-able, and I don't think I would mind if he did copy the idea :p

@Serg :)

@Serg Nice pixs in the answers :-)

Rinzy ! :)

3:55 PM
tosses a bag of bricks at @Zanna

@Rinzwind Thanks. That's my Lubuntu VM :3

dies horribly crushed

Fringewind! @Rinzwind

@Zanna revives Zanna and asks what's going on

@Zanna thou hast disturbed the unnatural forces of thy world.

3:57 PM
hmm I can't deny it

Hmm, Zanna shall prevail?

prevails foolishly

watches as the dark forces swallow up @Zanna by pulling them deep underground
oh dear, they don't like you very much

giggles they're tickling me!

4:00 PM
@JourneymanGeek fun fact I typed "them" stupid autocorrection of blah

when I try to type my brother's name "Alex", my phone usually "corrects" it to "sex"
thanks a lot Android!!

We could infer a lot of things from that statement.

"corrects"

thanks for correcting

and that's why for the most part i don't use autocorrect

4:05 PM
I suspect @ThomasWard is setting the chaotic energies on me because of a particularly stupid comment I made somewhere

@Zanna the chaotic energies are currently diverted to /dev/urandom as random seeds.

I'll wait

focuses all the evil at @Zanna in one massive focused beam of dark chaos
gets bored, and diverts the evil elsewhere
goes back to coding

:) have fun

@Zanna I see now.

4:10 PM
heh you see more than me, it's gone ^_^

4:25 PM
@Zanna us who wield Chaos Diamonds know things :P

Indeed, it is a diamond of Second Sight

for most mods, yes. For a select few, it's a Chaos Diamond of Darkness and The End of Days
oh wait that's just my diamond, corrupted by the darkness contained within me

Guys & girls, isn't this guy technically asking the same thing twice: here askubuntu.com/questions/886825/… and here askubuntu.com/questions/886888/…? If so, I feel a bit used (snif)

good afternoon

Good Chaos to you, @IanC

4:33 PM
Hi @IanC

hey @IanC

how are you guys and gal doing today? :) @JacobVlijm @ThomasWard @Zanna

very good thanks :)
@JacobVlijm I guess so - what happened?
shall I read the chat?

@IanC Chaotically.

how are you doing @IanC ?

4:36 PM
@ThomasWard well, one can say everything is chaos :)

@IanC true, but there are certain types of Chaos that are pure Chaos.

@ThomasWard choas?

@Zanna sure! I think he hasn't got python (Ubuntu) but doesn'dare to say... simply asked again.

@Zanna I'm great, been working on the new place, taking some stuff there, getting ready to live a few days without many commodities :p

@jokerdino Shush.

4:37 PM
@JacobVlijm oh yeah, see comment on steeldriver's answer, looks like not Ubuntu
@IanC sounds good :D

Solaris BOX o.O

@Zanna the bastard.

@jokerdino Burn them. Burn them to Oblivion.

@jokerdino you expect the lord of chaos to obey the trivial dogmas of spelling?
@JacobVlijm public spanking time!

We should all beat him with a pan on his head.

4:39 PM
pan = bread?

Can I use this pipe instead?

bread = pain

I probably will be a little inactive in the chat in the next few days, unless I can get some internet on my phone and tether it to my notebook

(no really pain is the French word for bread!)

@jokerdino

4:39 PM
also, I still have no energy there, so I might have some time to remember how people used to live without electricity haha

@JacobVlijm

PING PING PING

@Zanna The allegory is strong in this one.

any tips of foods that don't need to be kept in the refrigerator? I was thinking of buying bread, butter, canned tunfish and lots of fruits :p
and just having lunch out

@IanC nuts

4:41 PM

@Zanna peanuts are good, could buy some!

@jokerdino ^

That's sarten.

No, Koekepan

@IanC I like Brazil nuts, but (hilariously) you call them nuts of Para I think
hey cool, I got a notification saying my answer migrated
I hope it went somewhere warmer

4:45 PM
@Zanna I shunted it over to U&L because the OP said in a comment they don't have GNU awk, so they're not running Ubuntu (or Linux, for that matter) and that they also want it to work on Solaris.

@terdon yes indeed :)
thanks for that

@Thijser I just saw your question about the topic that we discussed yesterday here and I have answered it a moment ago ... please check it out - good luck ! :)

@terdon well. You can install BSD apps very easily in Ubuntu.
Some of them are even in the repos (I don't remember which/how many off the top of my head though)

@Seth Yes but when the OP says they don't have GNU awk, it's safe to assume they're not on Ubuntu, right?
I thought I remembered that Ubuntu had mawk as its default awk but I just checked in a VM and it was GNU awk.
In any case, they also said:

@terdon shrug. Online I gave up expecting anyone to mean what they say because of the crazy variance in English skill.

4:53 PM
I am sorry i have normal old awk and soon after i need to test this in solaris BOX. — chandu 2 hours ago

To be clear, I'm not criticizing your migration choice.

@Seth Huh? No, didn't think you were. Discussing != criticizing.
Anyway, given the mention of Solaris, U&L is definitely a better home for it

But we've closed questions before because someone said they were using BSD (netcat, I think it was?) only to realize it was in the repos and they were running Ubuntu.
@terdon yeah

@Zanna yeah, Para is a state of Brazil, guess they call it that because they are very common there, might get some of those too!

Yeah that's why it makes me laugh, we say Brazil, you say Para... what do the people in Para say?

5:14 PM
@Zanna not sure, maybe just "nuts" hahaha

hahaha yeah

I actually got curious how they call "dutch pie" in Holland :p
think I'll get some later if I find it

5:36 PM
Pie, I expect.

@terdon I want to thank you ... Thank you very much for finding the right words to calm me down and for helping me to overcome my frustration today ! :) You are doing a fantastic job here, really ... you are able to "convert" personal things into "objective topics" and on top (in between the lines) you gave me the feeling to understand my point (a little bit). This is what moderation is all about. Thank you for "leading by example" ! I am very glad that you're around ! :)

6:06 PM
bows. Very nice of you to say so, thank you and you're very welcome!

@terdon @Seth if I recall correctly, OP actually cross posted it on U&L originally, so either way it had to be closed and migrated somewhere. But non-GNU awk isn't 100%-proof way. If I recall correctly, up until 15.04 Ubuntu would ship with mawk by default

@Serg Ah, so I did remember correctly then. Either way, they also mentioned they want it to work on Solaris so. . .

thank you very much also for taking care of me there, it was a big relief to read what you were saying @terdon

Well, dang, this is a good day!
:P

@terdon yes, I've seen that, which is another good reason to send them over to U&L.

6:13 PM
@Zanna by the way, you should know that I like you personally very much and that I appreciate your contributions on AU - don't you ? Well, I hope so ... :)
Interesting article about swap usage : Do we really need swap on modern systems? -> redhat.com/en/about/blog/do-we-really-need-swap-modern-systems

rip accounts

@Zanna wrong ! I have 16 GB RAM and the other day when I ran a VM and did some other things it was not enough ... swap was used ... not a big amount, but it was used. :)

okay cya

@Zanna Depends, though. If you have SSD, like I do, you don't need a dedicated swap partition, but a small amount of a swap file will be OK. A lot of companies, including Canonical, are realizing that, which is why according to news on omgubuntu blog, newer Ubuntu versions will default to using swap files and no partitions
@Edity thanks for the PSA

6:31 PM
I know nothing myself, it's just what I heard. Obviously, for hibernation, the machine state has to get written somewhere, and the system has to know where to find it on resume, so some kind of swap, partition or file, must surely be needed. PS I read Btrfs doesn't support having a swap file and hibernating to it - causes corruption, just in case anyone thinks of trying it...

@Serg @Zanna in ubuntu it is a good idea to reduce the "priority" of swap usage -> sudo nano /etc/sysctl.conf ... add : vm.swappiness=10 ! :)

Yes, you need that for hybernation as well. (I keep forgetting that, because I personally don't use hybernation)
Mine is set at 30

@Zanna brtfs is still under "heavy developement" ... not a good recommendation fo the "everyday user" :)
@Serg I as well don't use hibernation ... but running VMs + LXD containers when testing things is taking "some" space ! :)

7:04 PM
Something funny from the CR chat today. Watch the short video.

How do you politely ask a person to stop talking on the phone without strangling them with a thin copper wire around neck ? ^_^

@Serg taser. or directed EMP.
or just take their phone and toss it out the window

Or I could just call cops and let them deal with it

There's also [REDACTED] but we try not to use it because [REDACTED] does [REDACTED] to [REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED].

@NathanOsman BRB building EMP gun.

There was pretty much nobody in the lab, so I kinda ignored that the guy put on speakerphone his friend/girlfriend/random girl driving and talking on phone/whoever . . . but at least he stopped once another student walked into the lab

@ThomasWard :O

Well that didn't help much did it.

@Seth lol.

@ThomasWard falls to the ground, stunned

nah it's not that much energy heh
just enough to be like "WTH"

gets up, brushes self off, and admires vertical hair in a shard of mirror

@Zanna I stopped using the 20PW forcefields after I fried my friend's pet dog by accident with it.
so yeah you're gonna be fine :P

fine and with even-more-awesome hair XD

Q: How can I accept the Microsoft EULA agreement for ttf-mscorefonts-installer?

MagicAfter a recent update, ttf-mscorefonts-installer prompted me to accept its license agreement. For some reason my terminal will not allow me to accept, or for some reason I am pressing the wrong hotkey... I've tried every letter on the keyboard and Enter among others... I'm sure there is a ...

There are girls in Ubuntu you just have to rescue them.

This must be Friday.

@NathanOsman it's Chaosday.
the Day of Chaos

Fair enough.

when Chaos runs rampant and Chaos Shards are aplenty.

Technically, Ubuntu is an OS, so there's only software on Ubuntu . . . But there are girls using Ubuntu so there's that
