@Seth ^

(stars aren't invisible to users btw)

i know
yay my owncloud works again

oh, wait, no, they removed it.
damnit
guessing works tho

A: I'm seeing stars! (I can see who starred a message and so can you)

balphaI have always considered stars to not be secret (they aren't secret on the Q&A sites either, where they're called "favorite"). I can see how some people make that assumption though, since we don't really show "who starred this" in a dedicated UI, mostly because, well, we never created such a thin...

a@KazWolfe i know about that question, and have known for a long time. user.dz aka sneetcher has been putting bounty on it multiple times. Nobody can answer it so far. It's something that requires advanced knowledge

Which question?
(they'll just be wasting their exp. with bounties either way)

11:05 PM
@Serg multiple = 2

App Indicators are easy. I can whip out one in under 20 minutes. System indicators are whole lotta different fish

also i have the best desk ever at work now :D

"Could anyone make a working port of this system indicator code in C to Python?" <-- that doesn't sound like a question answerable within the scope here

corner of office, monitors to wall. i get to do whatever i want lol

@ThomasWard it's under development on Ubuntu category.

11:09 PM
@Serg not sure asking us to completely port his code is within scope, but eh

@ThomasWard Could anyone? Yes. Will anyone? Probably not.

you're right it's development on Ubuntu, but asking us to do it for him?

I definitely don't feel like writing a Python wrapper for a bunch of C APIs.

So, basically, you want us to create a working port of your C code into Python... and you don't want to try porting it yourself? Not sure if that's ever going to be answered here, because you're basically wanting to hire a highly specialized Python programmer to write a highly-specialized piece of software/code for your indicators. System Indicators are completely different beasts from application indicators — Thomas Ward ♦ 1 min ago

@ThomasWard and how is this different from asking us to make a script ? an app indicator ? a popup window ? Plus, it's nt any port, it's for Ubuntu specifically

11:10 PM
@Serg point.missed

@ThomasWard i see your point , but it's no different from asking us to make awk script work with perl, or whatever. Of which there are plenty other questions
Again, it's Ubuntu specific question, so it belongs here, IMHO

@Serg except they usually have something they've tried. This might be a question we have to discuss on Meta whether this falls under our scope of 'development on Ubuntu'

@ThomasWard he already has tried something, there is python code they provided, which doesn't work.

shrugs
oops
wrong window

This is something that could answer whole lot of other unanswered questions on Ask Ubuntu, and open up more possibilities for other devs

11:15 PM
(that was suppsoed to go to Discord)

@ThomasWard we all saw that,muhahah

@Serg I mean, unless you want to write a Python-to-C bridge...

@Serg You saw nothing but the orbital kinetic impact rods coming from the stars down upon my post.

@KazWolfe there are bridges and APIs already.

@ThomasWard okay, seriously, what is with you and space lasers/rods?

11:17 PM
@KazWolfe i'm an evil vindictive scifi nerd?
@Serg Oh that's not the worst of it
trust me

@ThomasWard but why space lasers and/or rods? i'm sure you could use a lot more in your moderative endeavors.

Trust an evil entity shooting lazers ? Sounds like a plan

@KazWolfe Well, space lasers are possible, so are kinetic impact weapons.
@KazWolfe they had developed space-based lasers for anti-ICBM defense, though they never got into orbit

plus, you're kinda limiting your scope by only using space weaponry, which gets boring after a while.

the orbital weapons bans and what not
@KazWolfe Would you rather a deep chasm in the earth rip open and swallow posts in the fires of the underworld?
I have that too :P

11:19 PM
hm. we should start a D&D campain with askubuntu users. that sounds fun.

I need to learn more about D&D first
though, i'd probably end up as a dark evil wizard or some crap like that

@KazWolfe what is D&D ?
oh
dungeons and dragons ?

mhm

yes.

Never played that. In fact i haven't touched games in years
I gotta go back to steam or Minecraft or what not

11:23 PM
@KazWolfe don't tempt me to switch to the dark arcane magicks that I created in my brain's alternate universes
that is far more evil than instant-destruction-from-space

i think you need to work on balancing powers, @ThomasWard.

@KazWolfe I prefer unbalanced powers, thanks.
a true neutral would go for balance
a chaotic or neutral evil, not so much :)
I need sleep too, I'm running on only 4 hours sleep
and way too much coffee

no, a literal god would be the only one without balance powers.
soz, you're not an SE employee.

:P
@KazWolfe well, let's analyze the chain shall we?

so... BALANCE UR POWERS M80

11:27 PM
standard people have no heavy power. Community Moderators have higher power so we are the demigods. Community Managers are gods. Devs are supergods. SE CEO is overlord.
so, technically, it is still unbalanced power :)
I think i'm going to hijack the projectors in this classroom and make them all play Rick Astley on repeat...
disrupt the class a little

oh, hush, you shouldn't be able to do 10,000 DPS from a 5 mana spell with no repercussions.
that's just being OP for the sake of being OP, and that's no fun.

big accident near my campus

behold, The Dark Network is born. launches

Q: Overpowered PCs (Gabe's Dilemma)

JSBձոգչPenny Arcade recently ran the following strip: (Original strip here) While the resolution of this thread hasn't yet been posted, I'm wondering what we think here. How do you game with PCs who are topping out the power levels for your system? How can you keep things interesting or challenging ...

it's not fun to have OP characters, at least not to everyone else.
In other words, it's not fun to have giant four-ton rods of carbon-fiber rods coated with some extremely heat-resistant alloy raining down from the sky.

@KazWolfe You're not wrong. But, I have a question, what if I'm one of fifty groups who have that power? And therefore I'm not the only one bringing evil

11:35 PM
might be fun for you at the launch console, but not everyone having to dodge (unsuccessfully) the carbon rods from the sky.
@ThomasWard okay, do we still have a chance to survive any of those four-ton rods with our own powers? or...?

have you angered any world powers lately?

if one person with that level of power is bad, i can only imagine 50 is worse, unless incompetence among those 50 causes us to miss death narrowly by pure luck.

@ThomasWard Russians.

Russia had a great day with Syria peace talks!
Well not peace talks... killing less talks is best description :(
@KazWolfe Drought over yet or you want some more snow? (rain at lower elevations)

@KazWolfe Unless it's a case that too many people have the weapons and everyone is afraid to use them because the world will end if we use them.
If too many world powers have the weapons, they'll all be too afraid of each other dying instantly to use them

11:42 PM
It's hard to imagine Russia, US, China, England and France using nukes on each other.

@KazWolfe I didn't pin

11:58 PM
Textbook order placed, good-bye 118$

For 3 books?

textbooks are expensive

@WinEunuuchs2Unix for one book
