12:00 AM
@Serg HOLY CRAP... scan it to USB and resell it :P.... no wait just kidding don't call the NSA!

If there was a pdf version online, I'd gladly get it, but alas this textbook isn't among those

@WinEunuuchs2Unix they already know

@ThomasWard Oh well If I can't evade them might as well take them over and lead them!

lol
but they're already part of the AI network

i bet NSA could find a free copy of that book with their intelligence powers

12:07 AM
two words: publisher contacts
@Seth so which mod did? Roland?
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I like the rain.

@KazWolfe I don't know

@Seth can't you, like, look with your god powers?

gosh, I'd rather be in bed right meow

@KazWolfe We're marketing the rain as end to drought to reward elections though. Reversion back to climate norms if you will :p
@Serg it's 5:18 pm though! We're you up late on a python coding binge on a System Indicator (Whatever that is)?

@KazWolfe nope

12:21 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix no, i actually got sick

@TheXed I wuzzied out on the Arctic Sliver 5 thermal paste + CPU-GPU heat sink tubes project. I resurrected my laptop cooling pad instead and temps dropped from 90C to 62C.
@Serg Sorry to hear that buddy... flu?

sore throat, irritated nose, general body weakness. Might be just minor flu.

If I had to pay $118 for a stupid book I wouldn't keep for life I'd be sick too!
Sometimes I think they make college super expensive to only allow nobility / rich in and keep us riff-raff out.

Yeah . . . well, i gotta get that book since it's required. It's gonna be a shizshow even without the book so

Unfortunately there seems to be a new edition every year so you can't buy used.
Yet they still can't figure out how Alternating Current works through the ground it's hard to imagine a new edition every year stating what they don't know :p

Q: Should questions like this be migrated to Super User?

Elder GeekI answered this question today. The OP's comment indicated that the problem was actually a Windows issue to do with Ubuntu Userspace for Developers under Windows 10. Should the Q & A be migrated to SuperUser, Closed as off-topic, or left as is?

holy goats, my answer took off, lol

Nice answer +1 :)

@KazWolfe one of those that i call "cheap" question. User asks simple question that's not worth time and effort,yet you get high return in rep on it

@Serg hey, it gave me a reason to try out recursion for the first time in my life, so I'll take it.

@KazWolfe There's plenty of reasons to try out recursion, you were just missing out

12:46 AM
@Serg I like my loops better than self-calling functions.

@KazWolfe well, liking something doesn't always imply it's better, right ?
Not saying recursion is better. In fact, it's dangerous in some cases

ew recursion
it's so disgusting I can't even spell it right :p

Installing Ubuntu on a chromebook is not supported here, yes?

Technically, it is supported

the install itself, no
because that involves Crouton
and Crouton is not supported
if there's a problem not caused by Crouton, then it's fine

12:55 AM
@Zacharee1 Not necessarily . If they're doing direct installation to hardware, that's supported
Questions about Crouton aren't

iirc you can't do that on a Chromebook

askubuntu.com/questions/691414/… -- nuke pls (infamous user)

hence why Crouton exists

A: Crouton install vs Crouton-based Ubuntu problem

OliHistorical conversations on this have mirrored your question fairly exactly: What gets installed is Ubuntu, proper. Questions about using it are on topic. How it's installed (and how it boots) are not Ubuntu proper and are off-topic. That conversation stemmed from a bunch of questions being t...

@Zacharee1 I did so, installed Ubuntu directly to SSD, overwrote chrome OS

hmm
@KazWolfe the answer there suggests OT-ness
because you have to modify the BIOS
and remove write protection

12:57 AM
hence the close-vote :P

1:07 AM
@Serg Haha I just replied to that cheap question with my own answer :p

@WinEunuuchs2Unix that's not bad...probably could be in the mid 55s if done right...bring it buy sometime with a 12 pack and I will have it done in an hour...

I closed because 15.10 was end of life as of July 2016.

testing

please ignore

thx

@TheXed Oh I can do it... I just procrastinate. It would only take 1/2 hour to open laptop and take out all the lint... I spent more time talking about doing it than doing it :p
Now it's at 63C... so much better than 90C :D

oh, cool, i got my first ever tag badge :D

1:15 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I just want the beer...I don't care about the computer :-P

I didn't know there was a badge for tagging... COOL!
brb...need beer
You know after a stressful day at work it's nice to kickback and drink a brew with fellow hobbyists :)

Is the entire Crysis franchise for 12 dollars a good deal?
I don't know much about it, but I have always heard great things about it...

eh, its pretty games that were hard on your system
If you like FPSes its probably worth it

Crysis is known for being very demanding - so you could use it to break in your system :D

@NathanOsman lol...Can you run it doesn't think my CPU is compatible...

1:23 AM
Your CPU?!?

@NathanOsman that is what it says...

Wat.

Something about the clock speed....but Miniumum Requirements is a Pentium 4 2.2 ghz...

That is bizarre. What CPU do you have?

@NathanOsman i7-7700

1:24 AM
Lol.

7700?
wat.

Seventh generation?

oh, so it exists now.

@TheXed whaaaat?
@TheXed clock speed means shit

I dunno, just guessing

1:24 AM
That's like having 256 GB of RAM and being told you need 4 GB.

@KazWolfe came out this month...
Probably bough the first one in the country...
@WinEunuuchs2Unix yes 7th gen...

Found a way to spend the inheritence!

@WinEunuuchs2Unix part of it...

@TheXed PIVs had terrible performance for their clockspeed compared to... contemporary pentium MS, and all of the p6 decended architectures

My 3rd generation 3630QM is only running at 10% I don't need a faster processor, just need to clean lint out of fan vents :p

1:26 AM
Very roughly, that P4 2.2 would be comparable to... less than half of one of your cores.

@JourneymanGeek it also says I need an optical disk drive...what for? it is a digital download?

plus Arctic Silver 5 and heat sinks perhaps :)

@TheXed someone hasn't updated their requirements pages ;)

@TheXed what's an optical disc drive?
Ducks...

@JourneymanGeek I am sure it would run fine on my system...it is just funny...
@NathanOsman I didn't put on on this system either...saved myself 20 bucks...

1:27 AM
@NathanOsman It's like a floppy disk only it's shiny and not brownish-black.

lol
>_>
I have an old thinkpad for its optical drive ;p

@JourneymanGeek do you share it over your network?

Yeah now that I have USB booting work, I should take out my optical drive and put in something else.

be back later

@TheXed naw

1:29 AM
lol

I can just copy/rip the files I need as later
or image

Damn I forgot to check the mailbox to see if the new mouse rechargeable battery arrived from China :(
It's amazing $1.74 and free shipping to boot!

@WinEunuuchs2Unix and a burnt down house to go with it.

I'm thinking of getting a quad-layer Blu-ray burner for archival purposes.

@TheXed I wanted to buy a new laptop anyway... something with 4K and USB Thunderbolt.
@NathanOsman I research 100 GB BluRays a couple years ago... The disks were more expensive than the drive, or just about I think.

1:36 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix tell me about it. London Drugs is selling USB OTG cables for $15. Got one online for $1.07 with free shipping.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix are you sure? Quad-layer burners aren't cheap.

@NathanOsman I know everytime I buy something from London Drugs they try to sell me an HDMI cable and I give them this silly look :p

Amazon Basics has excellent HDMI cables.

@NathanOsman I think the Quad-Layer burners were about 200 bucks from China when I looked but I kind of gave up on that project because I don't backup anyway.
@NathanOsman You can buy HDMI cables from Dollarama. But I bought my 15 footer from Laptop to TV from New York State super cheap.
I bought a lot of USB cables too from that New York company over ebay.

I'm told monoprice is decent too
but their shipping here kills any advantage I'd get

That's what I don't understand. I can buy from China on ebay with free shipping, cheaper than I can mail the thing in Canada from one place to another.... And they fly the thing by air.
If I want to buy the same thing from US I have to pay 15 to 20 bucks in shipping.
And the sellers in the US buy it from China and get free shipping to their place. So confusing.
Japan's emperor wants to rescind the crown. That's interesting. He's 83 and feels he doesn't have the energy to serve the role properly. Not often a King relinquishes title with such honesty. Good for him.

1:51 AM
Wait, so you are willing to give up your home for a 4k laptop with USB thunderbolt?
That reminds me, I knew a guy that his house burnt down and he spent most of his insurance money one some bad ass laptop, and a swanky tv...
ended up living in an apartment sleeping on a twin size mattress on the floor...
I was like...dude you just lost at the game of life...

gosh, i feel like crap. Had enough energy to sit through lecture but that's it

@WinEunuuchs2Unix how much are the ones at Dollarama and how good is the build quality.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix how much are the ones at Dollarama and how good is the build quality?

@NathanOsman are my new glasses making me see double?
@NathanOsman are my new glasses making me see double.

@TheXed yes
@TheXed yes

@Serg lol
@Serg lol

2:05 AM
OMG!
OMG!

@TheXed fail
@TheXed fail

:-(
:(
:

I rest my case about the fail.

I concur...

@NathanOsman HDMI cables at Dollarama used to cost a buck but I haven't bought one in years. I've bought two or three of the 6 footers from them.

2:10 AM
My wife bought a bunch of HDMI cables from amazon...like 12 for 10 dollars or something...haven't needed to buy one sense
since?

@Zacharee1 yasssss, markimoo will be doing new Resident Evil series starting tomorrow
omg, im eggscited

hue

2:50 AM
We shall see if my CPU can handle Crysis...

3:03 AM
We can all save a thousand bucks buying an i-7 7700 7th generation and just watch Xed blog his experiences :)

@NathanOsman do you happen to know of a go library that will let me call Windows C based DLLs?
In python I can use ctypes

Note to self Ubuntu is off-topic in this room but Windows is ok
hehe just kidding Seth
@TheXed Thing about HDMI cables they are digital and not analog. With Analog you pay extra for degrees of quality, ie Gold plated connectors, shielded cables, etc. But what most people don't understand about the difference between $1 HDMI cables and $60 cables is there is no degrees of separation. They simply work or they don't work.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix except for Apple TV's, they tend to not like cheap HDMI cables for some reason...
(I know that from experience at work)
by the way Crysis runs at about 150 FPS..I think my CPU is fine...

3:19 AM
@TheXed I'm afraid I am Apple-TV challenged. I watch Orange-TV (Ubuntu- Russian Today). I have noticed Apple likes to force owners to purchase Apple cables via unique designs / interfaces and deviating from industry standards. They truly like to change IEEE from Apples to Oranges.
I hear they even killed the headphone jack.

which a lot of phone companies are moving towards
and the micro-b/usbc standard was forced by the EU

Ma Bell is more a reseller of hardware these days. They don't really make it IMO

one of trhe more useful things they did

I don't think Apple did away with the headphone jack for the sake of progress. I think they did it to make more money.

citation = what I think.

notability requirements: FAILED

Somehow the thought of failing in your mind, doesn't seem relevant.
Personally it doesn't matter Bluetooth earbuds serve me the best anyway.

3:50 AM
FTR someone posted today there is an AU rule you have to be nice :)

That's a real rule

4:21 AM
There's one AU question which is just freezing for me
I cannot use that tab at all !

4:39 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix it's an SE rule if I'm not wrong

4:53 AM
Anybody wanna throw out a suggestion on this ? askubuntu.com/a/875518/295286 perhaps @terdon ? I'm trying to see if there's any points that I missed or should address.

is this expected?...
/usr/bin/ssh-agent /usr/bin  1000
/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-trash -  1000
/usr/lib/mate-applets/trash  1000
bash                         1000
bash                         1000
bash                         1000
bash                         1000
the full script very nicely outputs
3107	/bin/bash	/dev/pts/0	zanna
3242	/bin/bash	/dev/pts/1	zanna
Done, press [ENTER] to continue
:)

@Zanna sort of, since those processes were apparently started with a shell. The first approach has issue with non-shell things sneaking into output. Maybe i should remove that one and only leave the long script ?

hmmm maybe you can exclude those things somehow

5:10 AM
OK, I got rid of that first simple while loop. I think the long script is better for what OP wants to do

the long script is awesome, but the short one would probably help people too
you could sedit out the the weird bits... like
while read -r shell ; do base=$(basename "$shell"); pgrep "$base" | xargs -r -I % ps --no-header -p % -o args,euid; done < /etc/shells | sed '/\//d'

Probably I could. I'll just leave it like that for now. My brain power isn't enough tonight, especially since i'm sick, to improve it all

hmm
It's great anyways
sorry for sidetracking your request to serious people haha

serious people ? who ? terdon ? Hardly serious

people who actually know things

5:20 AM
yawn

Meh . . . "actually know things" is a streachable term.
hmmm, found an odd bug in the script . . ./proc/[pid]/exe doesn't resolve for root

oooo, script?? what is itt

30 mins ago, by Serg
Anybody wanna throw out a suggestion on this ? http://askubuntu.com/a/875518/295286 perhaps @terdon ? I'm trying to see if there's any points that I missed or should address.

oh thx

gotta improve it slightly

5:32 AM
i'm thinking of which phone to get if meizu fails me within 1 month
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
something with long battery, dual sim and a fast charge will satisfy me
phoneeee
i want new phone when current phone breaks

@Edity OP3 is good. I have the original, there's a improved model out at the moment

>_>
lets see if they have it
3T

5:48 AM
I get about a day + typically, though I have my phone switchi tself off ar 12am, and turn on at 6am so I don't get woken up in the middle of the night
and it probably has the fastest charging of any current gen phone

>_> its so expensive <_<
^ look at dis price
eww gst

I swear, there's a bit of a insane markup every time oneplus dosen't sell it direct ><

.-.

Yeah that sucks
had the same issue here

ikr
but the lady said "break within a month = replace to another phone*"
oh boy
imma have it for FREE (i think)
only if the choice is unlimited 0_0
(as in, samsung only)

5:54 AM
OK, made the script work for root user as well . . . And I also just came up with idea how i could improve its performance , but . . . I am out of energy for tnoght
tonight

@Serg go take a nap

yeah, i'll do that. i wanna still take some meds , too . . .

noo

6:45 AM
@Seth yup, let me do one step better and point you to an example.

what is this github gist onebox magic

7:43 AM
@cl-netbox :)

8:05 AM
We had to replace our CO detector yesterday

8:44 AM
/join #ubuntu
i have a problem with Ubuntu Mate (and i do not know how this 'feature' is called - therefore i do not know what to search for in google) probably someone can help me?
when i start a drag action (on a window) i see a grid drawn over the window content. how can i disable this 'feature'?

8:58 AM
wait launchpad still maintains powerpc arch?

@Serg I saw that! :P

Good morning to all of you ! :)
@Fabby See you later alligator ... :D

And nice script, looking at it now. One thing I'd change is adding a 2>/dev/null to the call to stat since that prints out things like 4593 stat: cannot stat '/proc/4593/mountstats': No such file or directory, presumably for processes that disappear immediately (?) or something.

Hi terdon ! :) Good morning ! :)

And I don't know why you've added that "press enter to continue" instead of exiting but that's up to you.
Hi cl!

9:36 AM
Actually, @Serg, it doesn't seem to work very well. It only gets a small subset of the shells I have open:
$ foo.sh
8655 stat: cannot stat '/proc/8655/mountstats': No such file or directory
11987 stat: cannot stat '/proc/11987/mountstats': No such file or directory
15368	/usr/bin/zsh	/dev/pts/12	terdon
29138	/usr/bin/fish	/dev/pts/3	terdon
Done, press [ENTER] to continue
Compare to my approach:
$ pgrep -x "$(grep -oP '^/.*/\K.*' /etc/shells | sort -u | perl -pe '!eof && s/\n/\|/')" | while read pid; do ps -p $pid -o pid=,cmd=,euser=,tty=; done
 1235 /bin/bash                   terdon   pts/1
 4431 /bin/bash                   terdon   pts/2
 5399 /bin/bash                   terdon   pts/4

And it does seem like a teeeeny tiny bit too complex for what was requested. It takes several seconds to run since you're using find to go through /proc once per shell type.
$ time foo.sh &>/dev/null

real	0m35.991s
user	0m13.340s
sys	0m3.403s

$ time pgrep -x "$(grep -oP '^/.*/\K.*' /etc/shells | sort -u | perl -pe '!eof && s/\n/\|/')" | while read pid; do ps -p $pid -o pid=,cmd=,euser=,tty=; done &>/dev/null

real	0m0.488s
user	0m0.187s
sys	0m0.253s
Hang on, no, you're using find to find the PID's directory? Of course it takes ages! That's not needed at all. If you have the PID, you know the PID's proc dir is /proc/$pid, so the find isn't doing anything useful at all.

Thank you very much @terdon ! :)

You're welcome :)

11:42 AM
does anyone know the feature that draws a grid (2 horizontal and 2 vertical lines) when you move a windows in Ubuntu Mate?
how do you call this? (i really need to disable it, as it kills my remote control software)

12:16 PM
@lumo Winch window Manager do you use ?

@userdepth Mate, presumably.

So you use compiz ?
@lumo Do you uise Compiz ? if that's the case install compizConfig Settings Manager

Hello.

@NathanOsman Hello Nathan ! :)

I'm early.
@cl-netbox hi.

hi

@TheXed Hello ! :)

@cl-netbox whats up?

2:10 PM
@TheXed yo, you're up early.

@NathanOsman nope, I get every day at 6:10 AM CT

@TheXed nothing special ... upgraded my fedora system to kernel 4.9.5 today ... ah ... and I just saw that -> vivaldi.net/en-US/teamblog/…

@cl-netbox sound like fun...I haven't used Fedora in a long time.

@TheXed cool thing ... fedora 25 is great ... my second driver coming close up on my main system ubuntu ! :)

@TheXed you'd make a terrible programmer.

2:14 PM
@NathanOsman we already know that I am terrible at programming...
@cl-netbox I remember Fedora being fairly cutting edge...

@TheXed not anymore ... they changed a lot when starting the fedora next project ... the system is totally stable combined with the latest stable software packages available ! :)

So stable, but still fairly cutting edge compared to some distros...@cl-netbox

@TheXed compared to other distros : yes - bleeding edge in its very meaning : no ! :)

Maybe I will make a hyper-v install tonight when I get home...
how big is the download?

@TheXed about the same size as ubuntu ... 1,3 - 1,4 GB ... here is the download link -> download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/releases/25/… Run sudo dnf upgrade after the installation ... after a reboot you use kernel 4.9.5 ! :)

2:22 PM
downloading...
Does Fedora use KDE?

Its not the default
there's a KDE respin

@TheXed no ... GNOME 3.22

Oh okay...I couldn't remember for sure

Wi-Fi and AC on Greyhound buses. Best. Invention. Ever.
Argh.
I just downloaded a large file when I thought I had Wi-Fi enabled.
Well guess what.

2:34 PM
@NathanOsman What ? :D

I didn't.

hahaha

So... Large file downloaded on my data connection.
That was not cool.
Ah well. What's done is done.

Hi @Seth ! :) How are you ?

I had that happen before

2:36 PM
@NathanOsman thanks! I managed to get the DLL opened last night, but now I'm stuck because I can't seem to convert a string to uintptr.

@NathanOsman how big of a file was it?

I guess I could use cgo, but I was hoping to avoid that.

800 MB.
@Seth did you see my example?

@NathanOsman how much data do you have?

It avoids cgo altogether.
@TheXed 5 GB high speed.
They slow it after that.

2:37 PM
Then unlimited but throttled after that?

@NathanOsman just finished reading the whole. UTF16ptr looks rifht

Yup.

@NathanOsman just finished reading the whole. UTF16ptr looks right. Awesome!

@NathanOsman so the silver lining is, no overages...

@TheXed yeah.
@Seth my example may be a bit... verbose... so feel free to ask if you need clarification.

2:41 PM
@NathanOsman I think it gave me everything I need! Won't be able to test until later though.
All this just to change the desktop background lol. Windows is silly.

Hmm... only when you have to use this laptop in the dark, do you really realize just how much a backlit keyboard would help.

lol
or just learn to touchtype

I do.
But that doesn't help with adjusting screen brightness, etc.
And I'm more used to my desktop keyboard.

ah
there's tools to do that

I have a USB lamp but I forgot to bring it.
The prairies in winter - what a sight.

2:53 PM
@NathanOsman my laptop has the camera LED facing the keyboard as a spread lamp and a special key combination to turn it on independent of the camera. Not as nice as a true backlit keyboard, but still handy.

@Seth what are you doing?

@TheXed programmatically changing the wallpaper.
Which is a pain to do in Windows.

@Seth doesn't Windows support that out of the box?
@Seth I too have a little light on my laptop but I never use it.

@Seth I thought it was as simple as a registry key modification?

@NathanOsman maybe he is using Windows 95 or something...

2:55 PM
Doubtful.
Go doesn't run on Windows 95.

@NathanOsman Hmmm
@NathanOsman then he just doesn't know what he is doing?
But then again neither do I.

Well, give him a chance to explain what he's doing.
Maybe it's more complex than that.

@NathanOsman No I mean to say I don't know what I am doing...

@NathanOsman That doesn't take affect immediately, you have to force refresh the profile, but that doesn't always work either.

@NathanOsman I just fake it till I make it...

2:57 PM
Also, @Seth, before you invest a ton of work into this, there is a package with Go bindings for the registry IIRC.
Then scroll down to the Reg* functions.

Oh wait, isn't Go, the Google programming language?

Yes.
