What version of Ubuntu are you running? 16.04?

yes, Ubuntu Unity 16.04

user136984
Strange... It's not the same as my one in terms of the hash and I can't find any upgrade record for the day it says it was changed on...

user136984
Any idea why that could be?

$ apt-cache policy wget

@ParanoidPanda which one you have installed ?

user136984
@Serg: Ah, I have the candidate one you have there.

user136984
10:03 AM
Any chance you could install that one and let me know of the hashsum?

user136984
If not I'll have to find somebody else... :)

@ParanoidPanda sure, will do

user136984
Thanks! :)

I'm gonna upgrade all my packages too in the mean time

user136984
By the way, this is a really good song (though there is no actual signing ;P).

user136984
10:06 AM
And I wouldn't say that the music video is that great, but the song is!

user136984
I should really eat some breakfast...

Lindsay Stirling, the violinist
I know her

user136984
@Serg: Yeah, I think you introduced me to her. :)

wooooo lindsey stirling

user136984
Wait a minute... I don't remember putting that piece of food next to me... Where could it have come from?

10:08 AM
Ghosts
or Aliens

in soviet russia, food finds you

user136984
But I'm hungry so this is no time for paranoia! ;P

user136984
Eats mysterious food and turns into an Alien Panda...

ewww

I have bigger problems - my father will wake up in like 1 hours and 40 minutes . . . and I have no idea how to explain the missing chunk of plastic on that separator thingy between wood floor and carpet

10:10 AM
what happened to it

No idea . . . i think maybe my dog ate it . . . but in all the years we had her she never done nothing like that
so i am wondering if my father broke it accidentally and i didn't notice it the whole evening

just pretend you didn't notice :D

but i would notice something like that. It's not like there's a small piece missing. It's like 15 centimeters wide
I probably won't pretend because i'll go to sleep

user136984
Burglars maybe?

^paranoia

10:12 AM
Aliens . . .

user136984

july 4th coming soon
independence day = ALIENS

Actually , i think because of the rain , we had lights go out for like 2 seconds . . . so maybe during those 2 seconds aliens invaded my home and then ripped off that chunk ?
2

it all makes sense

10:13 AM
@edwinksl by the way, in Soviet Russia apt gets you
3

that is... expected

user136984
@Serg: Maybe you went sleep walking and ate it yourself? Don't blame it on the dog like with your homework! ;P

@ParanoidPanda the upgrade for all the packages will take 50 minutes . . . because i am also downloading lubuntu iso in the meantime
@ParanoidPanda but i don't sleep at night, only walk . . . outside . .. to smoke

user136984
@Serg: Any chance you could just upgrade wget to start with and then do the rest of the upgrades?

user136984
If not, I'll ask someone else as I need to know reasonably soon. :)

10:17 AM
Seems @mark_kirby and I have diifernet Ideas on how to anwser questions here again.

user136984
OMG! More food!!! :D

@edwinksl can you tell us what does apt-cache policy wget tells you ?

~$ apt policy wget

@edwinksl perfect, can you please also do sha512sum /usr/bin/wget

10:19 AM
yeah, very different from the old version

do you have same sha512sum for this version of wget?
hope no aliens changed my wget

@ParanoidPanda ^
@edwinksl I have older version, so my sha512sum is different , I posted it earlier

user136984
@edwinksl: Thanks! rkhunter told me my wget had changed hashsums but I couldn't find any record on an upgrade even though I have records for that day. But you have the same hashsum as mine so all should be fine! :)

@Serg ah ok you said you were going to upgrade, so i thought you already did

I have not, I have way to many downloads going at the same time @edwinksl , estimated upgrade completion is in 50 minutes

10:21 AM
@ParanoidPanda so there were no aliens? :(((((((((((((

user136984
@edwinksl: Maybe we both have the same aliens! ;P

i like that hypothesis

user136984
@Serg: Can't view it unless it's on i.stack.imgur.com.

url is i.imgur.com , does that help ?

user136984
10:24 AM
No, it needs to specifically be the stack one.

@ParanoidPanda that is odd, how come i can see it

user136984
Just press the upload button and paste in the URL.

@Kupferdrache now, yes xD

user image
3

yup, did you had a nice nap?

10:25 AM
@Videonauth you are back already?

user136984
@Serg Ah... :D

@ParanoidPanda and why are you blocking imgur sites ?

@edwinksl how you mean already :)) ?

user136984
@Serg: Exploits in images are going to be the highest there.

@Kupferdrache yes friday is one of the days in the week where i am sleeping

user136984
10:27 AM
To not completely use functionality I allow the stack sub-domain on SE.

@ParanoidPanda unless you're browsing as root ( which I hope you do not ) , you probably shouldn't worry about that, plus I'd figure they're checking the images somehow

@edwinksl That is because Pandas are paranoid and have blocked all other images from teh webz :)

em . . . i think that message was meant for me <----

i am sure panda still want to see pictures of other pandas on imgur... right?

10:29 AM
4 mins ago, by edwinksl
@ParanoidPanda that is odd, how come i can see it

ah . . . ok . . . . i thought our ubuntu misspellings avatars confuse people as to who is who
yay, 31 minutes for upgrade to finish

@Serg well they confuse me so i only look at the names right now

well, two more days, and i am gonna change it

to what?

I don't know, probably to the same photo i have on linkedin ? or maybe take a new one ?

10:34 AM
mhmmmm, import getopt or import argparse?

:3076839 optparse?

argparse seems to be easier, but getopt is kind of "classic"
@Rinzwind rofl
^ that's me

argparse is the easier one (it is also newer)
@Serg making me happy for nothing with a cute girl pix :*

@Rinzwind cute girl pic ??? what ???

on you link :=D

10:37 AM
rinz must be high or something

So how come you guys can see who views my profile and I can't ?
Linkedin makes no sense . . .

10:38 AM
no idea _O-

it's not that. People who viewed your profile also checked her out.

it's microsoft so why would it make sense?

found her
cute indeed

made you search!

serg's yellow fever strikes again

10:41 AM
Found another Shelley Gao , software engineer in Canada. Daym, she knows C/C++, Java, Python, opengl . . . That's hot

@Serg So youre more look for the inner values :p

( Serg's yellow fever knows no boundaries , but he is still loyal to his gf )
@Videonauth I look for balance of external and internal stuff . . . . because admittedly i am into cute girls, but if a cute girl has good character that's a win-win

l don't have a GF so send them over @serg

send me what ? linkedin profiles ?
@Videonauth was that you ?

yes

10:46 AM
\m/^_^ woho, awesome
8 mins till upgrade finishes, 38min for lubuntu iso . . . not too bad . . ..well it's 5 am , probably I'm the only one generating that much traffic

hehehe

Really interesting question you ask last minute @ParanoidPanda

user136984
Thanks :)

too bad, I don't know an anwser ther either, that could give qute a bit of rep.

. . . .and probably we all have the same paranoia ;) jk
OK, I'm out guys. See ya

user136984
@Serg: Bye! :)

night serg

11:11 AM
morning actually, it's 5:11 AM here

@ParanoidPanda I still dont get this really, whats so wrong with wget?

user136984
@Videonauth: Nothing seemingly, just that rkhunter told me the hashsum had been changed but I couldn't find any record of an upgrade so I wanted to know if I had the same hashsum as others. I do, so we have concluded that we either all have the same rootkit (aliens) or no rootkit at all. :D

ah ok :p

@edwinksl seems so that my apt-get install world-domination-kit introduced this
xou can find it int the dictatorship repository
xD

ah that makes sense

@Zanna Just to let you know: you not need <img> tags to make a picture visible you can do it the following way ![image][1] just as other links work too but with a ! in front.

bad time for me @Markkirby is around aggain.

11:34 AM
why is that

Anyone here?

@AndroidDev no were all been abducted by aliens and are now in Alpha Centauri
at least as long were following @ParanoidPanda fears
xD
kidding

@Videonauth Have you seen this? MS paid a $10,000 fine for forced Win 10 upgrades/ youtube.com/watch?v=qhCfpbN-qCc#

yeah already had this yesterday in my news feeds
right so ;)
serves them right for nagging me with update screens untill i migrated to linux

@Videonauth - :) Don't you just hate it when the OP leaves a thanks comment, and doesn't upvote or accept? Happened to me yesterday: askubuntu.com/questions/793802/…

11:41 AM
yeah, but happens often
I simply don't bother anymore and move on since every answer will sooner or later produce some up-votes

@Videonauth <sigh>

@Videonauth thanks for that <3

@Zanna no problem, you're very welcome, I'm just telling you in case you wonder why you get some suggestions reject
If you have only a link you need to make a second line like this [1]: http://link.com/picture.jpg

@Videonauth the way with least typing is the better way :)

11:57 AM
It's as well about the formatting, if they change their parser on the SE sites suddenly <img> tags could break, so it is about making sure it all works if they make changes on the underlaying code.

oh I see, in which case, I will make sure to learn to use that way, thank you!

user136984
Apparently IS have threatened to make an attack on Heathrow...

user136984
:(

user136984
Still no one have any ideas on this matter?

Q: Signature-based rootkit scanner?

Paranoid PandaCurrently the only rootkit scanners I know of have to be installed on the machine before the rootkit so that they can compare file changes etc (e.g.: chkrootkit and rkhunter), but what I really need to do is to be able to scan my machine and other machines from a LiveUSB because if the rootkit is...

12:13 PM
@ParanoidPanda Is IS, is IS == 'IS STUPID'

Nope, sorry, don't know much about it.
they threat a lot on long days don't worry.

@Videonauth remember the comments about python in SU that i gave you? looked like my flags on those comments worked

@edwinksl erm, blushes, actually I'm lost what you refer to, I have read so many in the past days, can you provide me with a link?

the comments have been deleted but you probably remember the question

yes the one i was getting so upset about the comments :)
        parser = argparse.ArgumentParser(
        prog=sys.argv[0],
        usage="[FLAGS] ... [LENGTH] [LIMIT]",
        description="""
            Generates a password of given length.
            If no arguments are given the program will default to a password length of 8 characters and
            limit the maximum occurrences of single characters to 1 character.

                Example:
                \"passgen.py --flags='dlps' --lenght=15 --limit=1\" will result in a password containing digits(d),
its slowly getting somewhere :)
gah now it killed the formatting

12:21 PM
lol should just provide a pastebin or gist ;)
syntax highlighting is nice too

user136984
Anyone know anything about how to use 2D ArrayLists in Java? :)

user136984
I have a project and now I am stuck as I can't get the storage means sorted out.

what exactly do you want to know ?
its long since i used java :)

user136984
Basically how to declare and manipulate them.

user136984
I can't seem to find any good documentation on the matter.

Q: Initialising a multidimensional array in Java

burntsugarWhat is the correct way to declare a multidimensional array and assign values to it? This is what I have: int x = 5; int y = 5; String[][] myStringArray = new String [x][y]; myStringArray[0][x] = "a string"; myStringArray[0][y] = "another string";

as for using/accessing the variables you simply run a for loop with a nested for loop if they are 2d
@edwinksl yeah have to set up PyCharm to directly upload versions to my GitHub

no, wait.
That's not true
I was thinking about the comparison whoami to root they do
Wouldn't that be better to compare id -u to 0

user136984
@Videonauth: Thanks! :)

@grooveplex wouldn't that then be id -e 0 ?

@Videonauth id -e 0 returns invalid option
at least on my "machine"

if [ $(id -u) -e 0 ]
I guess im thinking to much python nowadays, brain-overflow maybe :)

12:35 PM
@Videonauth Me too! I don't even know how if works in Bash anymore
I found myself opening a python REPL to try it
xD

hahahaha
hilarious
that made my day
damn, my coffee mug has a bug, its leaking coffee, always empty this stupid thing

an OverflowError?
or rather a... UnOverflowError
or uhh

Underflow currently, but im working on a hotfix ;)

strong puns

There's this URL shortener called urlify.io that turns your links into shady links

@grooveplex for sure needs some editing love, problem i have with it is it makes almost no sense to me what hes trying :)

12:56 PM
@ParanoidPanda I updated my clipboard answer and added commands to directly paste stuff etc. askubuntu.com/a/793934/367990

@grooveplex if I do apt source sudo I get unable to locate source package (same with apt build-dep. sudo). Is it just me?

@Zanna You'll need to add deb-src lines to sources.list

So maybe that should go in the wiki too. I'm away from my box anyway now

@Zanna agree

hm, so many errors in the terminal abou something in Gtk+. Are the new installation images available now 16.04.01?

1:13 PM
@Kupferdrache no, you can check at releases.ubuntu.com

I first thought Yakkety Yak was a joke
but it's real...

Is the name for 17.04 already out?

Ok, the doawnload of latest packages is started, took a while for something to prepare, was affraid, something may had been broken.

@ByteCommander YY is 16.10
y oh y did they call it yy

Yeah, I meant ZZ.

1:16 PM
Zuperb Zebra :3
No, I have no idea

Zappy Zodiac
xD

Zappy Zebra

happy name guessing

Zazzy Zoo (because all Ubuntu version names had animals in them, right?)

Now I have an idea for that

Q: Installing ubuntu 16.04 alongside windows 10?

Nakul KumarI want to install ubuntu on my system : Acer Aspire E574G, 4GB Ram, 1000 gb hdd. Windows 10 BIOS : Legacy, I have checked in system information. I have 3 partitions. C (350), D( ~ 350) and rest E. I want to dual boot the system. I tried installing 16.04 ubuntu and lubuntu inside virtualbox but ...

chat stop glitching PLS

T_T

@Videonauth weird isn't it?

A NUN
:ba dum tss:

two obvious dupes right away
@grooveplex yesh

1:19 PM
yep

ez flags

and i guess theres already an answer there for it too

I think it should be required to take a Markdown test before asking your first question
4

lol
or at least be told about it

yeah
because sometimes I see a question and I'm like :cries:

1:22 PM
yeah like evil microsoft paperclip popping up if there is already a question containing those words
DO you mean ... pling
and not only popping up in a corner, no fullscreen pls

wut

fine

Or before posting a question it will actually open a Google search in a new tab with the title of your question

Isn't here already a list with related question, when you start a new one?

1:25 PM
@grooveplex yes
@Kupferdrache yeah, but that's based on keywords and tags, so it isn't very good
and people automatically ignore those things

human --ignore-helpful-related-questions

@Videonauth Clippy would want that tho

he prefers Vista, but no one's that stupid

1:30 PM
well kinda like that popping up if dual boot windows 10 is mentioned like that but popping up fullscreen then

I have no idea what you just said

O.k. for you, nice and slow, if someone writes a question here on AU, containing said words lets pop something like the evil paper clip pop up full screen, stating "Do you mean to LINK TO ANSWER"

oh

xD
actually with this Windows 10 nonsense were getting each day about 2-5 questions asking the same thing
and slowly it becomes anoying

heh

1:40 PM
And just wait till the redstone update is out, the Ubuntu for windows questions will pop up a lot

that isn't out yet?

dont know i not following it as far i heard from a friend no not yet, only beta it is

I don't think, It will be possible, as Microsoft still holds the copyright on that clippy guy.

well then an evil looking penguin

Let's just make our own clippy then instead, maybe similar to that one:
o.O???

1:46 PM
and if you click it away it will ask next time "do you want me to hump your leg" or such

In DuckDuckGo, there was a different image on that link.
It looked like that.

@Zacharee1 2nd of August is the release date, just looked it up

wow

and since if you put the word Ubuntu into Google one of the top hits will be AskUbuntu I expect this to hit the site very hard

Prepare yourself

1:59 PM
Arm the SPAM FLAKs!
;-)

coughs

@ThomasW. no

@ThomasW. Maybe you should make yourself a cup of tea?

@ByteCommander allergy season - wouldn't help.

2:01 PM
You have to cough from that?
For me it's usually the nose and the eyes...

he's allergic to chat

cats and chats...

@ByteCommander all the same if you're French
lotta dislikes on that one

@Zacharee1 Oui, je chatte avec deux chats, un chat et une chatte dans un chat.
:P

GTranslate?

2:06 PM
No. I had French classes for a few years.
Don't ask me how many...

how many?
:}

I guess 5 years maybe? But I stopped 3 years ago.

@ByteCommander - I'm trying out Windows 7's VHD boot feature. Have you tried it?
@grooveplex +1

2:30 PM
@ByteCommander enough to know the second meaning of chatte?

@terdon - Can I resize my main EXT4 partition while still in Ubuntu?

@AndroidDev Not if you're using it, no.
Boot into a live CD

@terdon Is that why it says the minimum size is it's current size?

What do you mean? Who says? Where?

@terdon Gparted

2:35 PM
you can't resize your partition while it's in use, the fact you got to that window is an error

That looks like it's already the entire disk

@AndroidDev the disk is mounted so you can't modify it
it's probably a failsafe to prevent you breaking things
but you should NOT be doing anything from the system - you need to boot into a Live enviornment
and then resize

@terdon No, stupid, that's the resize window.

:P

@ThomasW. Why doesn't Linux allow live repartitioning? Window does.

2:36 PM
@terdon I'd offer you caffeinated tea, but all I've got is non-caffeinated herbal tea
and coffee

@AndroidDev It does, but not of mounted filesystems.

That's on the Verizon website

@terdon That's the point. I want to shrink it.

2:37 PM
@AndroidDev OK, boot into a live cd then

@AndroidDev you can't >;)

@terdon <sigh> It is nice that Windows allows live repartitioning on a MOUNTED volume.

@AndroidDev Boot to a LiveCD - you can't shrink it while the partition is in use, and since that's your currently booted environment you can't unmount the disk.

From man resize2fs: The resize2fs program does not manipulate the size of partitions. If you wish to enlarge a filesystem, you must make sure you can expand the size of the underlying partition first. This can be done using fdisk(8) by deleting the partition and recreating it with a larger size or using lvextend(8),if you're using the logical volume manager lvm(8). This question is about resizing the partition, not the filesystem. The distinction is subtle but very important. — Eliah Kagan Jun 3 '12 at 7:07

@AndroidDev if that is the only advantage windows has >;)

2:38 PM
@AndroidDev I doubt it, actually. Are you sure that doesn't require a restart?

@Zacharee1 and what about that page

@terdon Yup. I just tried it in a VM.

@terdon the one with 89 upvotes >:)

@ThomasW. "Select a OS"

:P

2:39 PM
it's a corporation
that shouldn't happen
especially since Verizon spends more time making its website look good than actually giving customers a good experience

@Rinzwind Which is, apparently, quite wrong.

it is! >:(
how did that get to 89? Hmmm?
you are the mod! fix it >:)

Can't. Don't have super downvotes :(

you admit to still being a n00b? even in blue?

Shhhh!

@terdon So I booted from a USB, and told it to shrink the partition by 128GB, and it is working on it. But now it says, "Resizing the filesystem on /dev/sda1 to 4k blocks." Is that bad?

@AndroidDev Don't really know, but I doubt it. 4k is the normal block size.

@terdon I'm not going to lose any data, right? My last backup was a month ago.

a mounth since last backup, you lose a lot of data in that time

@AndroidDev if you leave it be and you don't lose power or anything it'll not lose your data
but you have to let it complete heh

@ThomasW. I certainly won't touch anything and let it be.

@AndroidDev Um. How would I know? No, normally, resizing should be OK but any kind of manipulation of your partitions carries a risk of data loss, yes. On the bright side, it's never actually happened to me and I've done it often enough.

@terdon I'm just wondering why it's resizing my filesystem.

@AndroidDev What do you mean? You told it to resize the partition, right? So it must also resize the filesystem.
