2:00 PM
oh
but there are no spaces in that command
it's literally /*

Well, curiosity :P

lol
@terdon how would giving a list of default ownership of directories present on a fresh install be as an answer?
With an explanation, of course

You could try. However, the OP hasn't told us what the machine is. If it's a personal one, that might be enough. If it's something else...

yeah
I was thinking just to cover most of some of it

For most or some of it, it would actually be enough to just chown back to root.
It all depends on the details.

2:03 PM
hmm

A reinstall is the only complete and sane way

@BharadwajRaju Here it should be possible to fix as long as you know what you've changed.

is there a way to compare the output of an ls command to a corresponding FS and fix permissions like that?

A chown -R on / ?

That's not what happened

2:07 PM
@Zacharee1 A script could be made

SERG

Master of Scripts

@Zacharee1 chmod has this:
       --reference=RFILE
              use RFILE's mode instead of MODE values

hmm

Which would make the scripting even easier but the script is pretty trivial.

2:09 PM
but what about chown?

@Zacharee1 Like this

Well @terdon seems to be right. I ran an ls /*/* -l (I think it's right) and got this: paste.ubuntu.com/20039504

-rw-rw-r-- 1 bharadwaj bharadwaj 1.9K Jul 19 00:16 FILE
on ls -la
We need columns 1, 3, 4
@Zacharee1 Try with ls -la /*/*

But won't that only get the root directory?
We also need every directory under every directory under root

@Zacharee1 corrected.

2:14 PM
What's the difference
with the a

what changes?

-a gets hidden files

ah

@BharadwajRaju Eeeek! Breaks on any type of weird file name!
You want this:
find / -maxdepth 2 -ls | awk '$5!="root" && $6!="root" && $NF!~/^\/proc/ && $NF!~/^\/tmp/'

2:17 PM
ewwww

And that still breaks on file names with newlines

why so complex?

@Zacharee1 That's complex?

And is this what would be best? find / -maxdepth 3 -mindepth 3 ! -regex "/proc.*" | xargs -I{} stat -c "%n %U.%G" {} | awk '{sub(/[^\/]*$/,"",$1);a[$1]=$2}END{for(i in a)if(a[i]!~/root.root/)

@Zacharee1 Are you kidding? You call mine complex?

2:18 PM
@terdon slashes and backslashes and brackets and dollar signs and ampersands

ls --recursive?

@terdon I wasn't saying that was better. It's what 123 suggested :p

Q: how to make my dns server public?

WhoAmii'm trying to make a public DNS server , my DNS server works only on my internal network but when i try to 'nslookup example.com myDNSserverIP(public ip)' it fails i'm running it on ubuntu 15.10-Server-32bit - dnsmasq 2.76 dnsmasq config file : resolv-file=/etc/resolv.personal interface=wlan...

@Zacharee1 It's just much more complex than it needs to be. Much of that is unnecessary.

tell him then

2:19 PM
There was something about not parsing ls...

@Zanna Beat me to it :P

I'm trying to remember if I'm supposed to be going to work right now!! my brain has too many tabs open >_<
I better go just in case... what a fool

Here @Zacharee1 is this less scary?
find / -maxdepth 2 -ls | awk '$5!="root" && $6!="root"' | grep -vE '/proc|/tmp'
@Zanna Call in and ask?
Hmm. Although we probably want || not &&:
find / -maxdepth 2 -ls | awk '$5!="root" || $6!="root"' | grep -vE '/proc|/tmp'

2:23 PM
@terdon runs away

And we can also safely ignore /dev that's populated at boot so:

Note: All the above find commands need sudo/root

find / -maxdepth 2 -ls | awk '$5!="root" || $6!="root"' | grep -vE '/proc/|/tmp/|/dev/'
@BharadwajRaju Not really, only to see /root (which we don't care about, everything there should belong to root anyway) and /lost+found which we don't care about.

@terdon can't you also omit /run?

2:25 PM
Yes indeed.
find / -maxdepth 2 -ls | awk '$5!="root" || $6!="root"' | grep -vE '/proc/|/tmp/|/dev/|/run/'

I just installed VMWare, found and booted an Ubuntu VM to test this out, when I had my server running all this time...
@terdon what about /mnt?

So we may as well exclude them from find to begin with:
find /!(proc|tmp|dev|run) -maxdepth 1 -ls | awk '$5!="root" || $6!="root"'
@Zacharee1 That depends on what the OP has set up.

hmm

If something was mounted under /mnt, the results will depend on what filesystem and how it was mounted.
Same for /media

yeah

2:28 PM
But see, the final iteration isn't that scary at all :)

You should probably exclude /root and /lost+found too, just to get rid of perm denied clutter
@terdon Looks quite nice actually

@Zacharee1 Why? Everything in /root is either owned by root or irrelevant and more likely both.

yeah
read the edit
My brain is tired

Same for /lost+found, that's just fsck stuff.

It'll get rid of clutter
find /!(proc|tmp|dev|run|root|lost+found) -maxdepth 1 -ls | awk '$5!="root" || $6!="root"'
131226    4 -rw-r-----   1 root     shadow        824 Jun 21 14:34 /etc/gshadow
131284    4 -rw-r-----   1 root     shadow       1212 Jun 21 14:34 /etc/shadow
131095    4 drwxr-s---   2 root     dip          4096 Oct 21  2015 /etc/chatscripts
131103    4 drwxr-xr-x   5 root     lp           4096 Jul 19 07:00 /etc/cups
find: `/mnt/hgfs': Protocol error
1064478    4 drwxr-xr-x  16 zw       zw           4096 Jul 19 07:26 /home/zw
@terdon I think I could make a good answer with that output, explaining why certain directories are being omitted, and that there may be some custom directories that came later. Could I use your command, and do you think it would work as an answer?

2:32 PM
@Zacharee1 Go for it.

thx

Just be aware that what you get is not necessarily representative. For example, on mine, I get:
$ find /!(proc|tmp|dev|run) -maxdepth 1 -ls | awk '$5!="root" || $6!="root"'
find: ‘/lost+found’: Permission denied
find: ‘/root’: Permission denied
  1179656      4 drwxr-xr-x   5  root     lp           4096 Jul 19 17:14 /etc/cups
  2621441      4 drwx------   2  bob      bob          4096 Apr 27 11:25 /home/bob
 11272193      4 drwx------  54  terdon terdon     4096 Jul 19 17:34 /home/terdon
  1703940      4 dr-xr-xr-x   2  root     ftp          4096 Sep 30  2015 /srv/ftp
   393395      4 drwxrwxr-x   3  root     games        4096 Apr 22 13:02 /var/games

why so few?

Different system.
Not only a different distro but also a different combination of installed software.

But the output I have above: would that be enough to get them back on their feet, so to speak?
Different distro?
That question was originally tagged Ubuntu

2:35 PM
Certainly worth a try. Just make sure to mention what OS and distro you're using and they the OP's mileage may vary.

yeah

@Zacharee1 Yes, but I'm not using Ubuntu so my output is different. The OP's will likely be similar.

I'm thinking that my output certainly doesn't include a lot, but since it's a fresh install, it includes the folders and files important to the system
so some programs might still be broken, but the OS should at least keep running

2:46 PM
I know I missed something, but 5 hours of sleep knocked me stupid for the day :p
Definitely edit it (or delete it :p) if something's wrong

Cool

I love this vote count script
so I don't need the 1k rep to see votes on SE :p

Another Denver dude \m/ wooo

Maybe he has bronchitis.

Bronchitis ?
No , no. Broncos is a Denver football team

2:54 PM
s/football/handegg

nope , since I am in the US and in the US football is american football
if that makes sense

3 hours

3:14 PM
@Zacharee1 what the heck are you keep on counting ?

doomsday

@Zacharee1 O_o

Oh, that ?! Pffff , we don't need countdown to that

Please don't feed panda's paranoia. The chances of that guy even remembering to come back are minimal.
And poor panda's quite paranoid enough as it is.

3:17 PM
What terdon said ^

@terdon he was last seen yesterday
he's been visiting lately

So? It's not like he's dangerous or anything. If he makes a nuisance of himself, he'll just be suspended again and for longer this time.
That, by the way, somebody harassing another user, is a very good reason to ping a mod.

We don't know if he's dangerous though. Panda says he knows him irl (he was a friend), and that he threatened to release his address and some other things

Well, that's even better reason for suspension

so, personally, I think there's reason for paranoia in this case, and, personally, I want everyone to be alert for his presence

3:20 PM
And maybe police involvement

@Serg we suggested that, but panda's hesitant

what is it that I am out of loop of?

The whole roboduck thing from a year ago?

@jokerdino Nothing important. That troll that was bothering panda last year is getting unsuspended soon.

oh that one

3:21 PM
@terdon the problem is, there's a very real chance he isn't just a troll, especially since he's a real-world acquaintance with panda

@Zacharee1 If that were a problem, the suspension would hardly have solved anything.
And, even if it is a problem, it is not one we can do anything about.

So let me get this clear . . . .a guy gets suspended for a year . . . A whole year . . . and we expect this troll to come back and harass panda again ? That would be some seriously persistent troll, if not stalker by definition . And stalking is criminal offence, last time i checked

Panda went by a different name back then.

All we can control is what happens here. However, that we can control pretty well. So, if he makes a nuisance of himself again, he'll be banned again.
@Serg Well, we don't, really. Panda does.

@terdon that is indeed slightly paranoid . . . .

3:23 PM
We'll see what happens

Q: VirtualBox Host - Ram Question - Mem Free Vs Mem Available - Possible Mem Leak?

FreeSoftwareServersI'm wondering if our system has lots of free RAM, or if its almost out. I read here regarding MemAvailable but I am wondering how it applies to VirtualBox as I am sure thats the reason the numbers I get from the following commands differ so much. cat /proc/meminfo | grep Mem && free -lg MemTotal...

Meanwhile , I need 5 more goats and 1 chicken

Remember, he did know panda irl, so panda actually knows what he's like
@Serg yum?

Because YOLO that's why

Why do people do it? Does it come before block code in the help center?

3:26 PM
@Zacharee1 Sure, but as I said, if their suspension was enough to solve the issue as it apparently has, then real life is not a problem. In other words, if the issue were real life related, the suspension would have been completely irrelevant and so it makes no difference whether it ends or not.

@terdon well the user wants to release panda's info here. That was the whole point I thought. The suspension prevented him from doing so
I guess we just have to wait and see
> General Arqade chat, wherein we get drowned in Pokemon GO posts
lol
Apple's releasing an iPhone 7, 7 Plus and 7 Pro

3:44 PM
._.
and a 7se ? ;p

no, 7c :p
I thought Samsung put out a lot of lines

dosen't mean its a good thing
lets see, the mainstream galaxy (and edge) note (and edge) then a smattering of low end stuff

yeah
No Note Edge stuff though

Note 7 is probably only going to have the Edge screen
unless you get it on Verizon

3:51 PM
samsung.com/sg/consumer/mobile-devices/smartphones 4 product lines with up to 5 phones each

Then it supposedly going to be flat, but with severe specs nerfs

also, at some point I need to talk my dad into upgrading

Axon 7

I am very much confused . . . .

3:52 PM
hi very

proper code, no syntax error , and yet it doesn't work
hi Journey :D

@Serg You're very much confusing too
@Serg Code does that
@JourneymanGeek yech

funny thing is that I have these exact same lines, just within a few other loops and stuff, and that old code works

try copying and pasting the code to a new file?

@Zacharee1 also, my parents find my tendancy of buying phones from odd brands like HTC, moto and oneplus wierd

3:55 PM
@JourneymanGeek well...

samsung should work
cause they've heard of it
mom got a xiaomi, as you know

right lol
@KazWolfe thanks...

Hi.

@KazWolfe you caused this

I cause everything around here.
SE would be boring if not for me and my shenanigans.

3:57 PM
sigh
You made the mods dislike me right away :/

No, they dislike everyone
Once you hang around there for a few days, they lighten up to you

Q: Su as root and run command in one line

Jay WilliamsI need to su as root and run a command as a single line. This is for use in a python script. @Zacharee1 You kind of asked for it. Seriously, can we please stop blowing this out of proportion before anything has even happened? We're talking about some random kid who has probably grown out of it by now anyway.

I'm not trying to!
And I don't want to lie about what I'm doing when I'm asked

4:07 PM
agree with terdon, this is blowing out of proportion.

@Zacharee1 Well, dropping into random chat rooms to stalk the guy is not the best way of not escalating :)
@Zacharee1 In that case, may I respectfully suggest you refrain from any more under cover spy work? :P

@terdon I was being passive
I don't see the problem with joining the chatroom if I suspect something bad might happen

stop doing what you don't others to do.

@Zacharee1 Pro tip: you can use the transcript

@terdon isn't that even worse?
I figured I'd join the room to see if anything happened and maybe talk to some people there in any case

4:10 PM
@Zacharee1 Why? It's useful if you want to watch the room without being seen.

everybody knows, nobody cares

I've been trying to find another room to frequent (PHP and JS are annoying)

as big as the problem is for @ParanoidPanda, he hasn't done anything yet, so he warrants absolutely no attention.

@terdon you brought up the term "stalking"

A suspension clears your slate entirely.

4:10 PM
if I don't even make my presence known, isn't that actual stalking?

that's it. I am going off for food.

@Zacharee1 I know, and understand but telling people that you're "keeping an eye out for a certain user" is a great way to get everyone wondering who that is and start a fire where there was none.

Q: Is it a good practice to copy Go's binary distribution into `/usr/local/`?

TimFrom Go's install webpage, Download the archive and extract it into /usr/local, creating a Go tree in /usr/local/go. For example: tar -C /usr/local -xzf go$VERSION.$OS-$ARCH.tar.gz Choose the archive file appropriate for your installation. For instance, if you are installing Go ve...

So, if you're curious, just lurk in the transcript or tell people you dropped in for a chat. Nothing wrong with that.

@terdon It was directed at Kaz, but I see what you mean
And again, I don't like to lie

4:11 PM
@Zacharee1 I have a pet unicorn.

@KazWolfe I'm gonna put you on ignore

@terdon o.O

@Zacharee1 smart!

@jokerdino ?

user136984
I would rather people don't poke the bear, and as he might come in here and see you all talking about it that's not going to make things better... Though I'm sure he mentioned to me once that he know has a fear of this room...

4:13 PM
@terdon don't leak the secrets

user136984
@Zacharee1: You can just go to the SE chat profile for a user and go to the tab which shows all their recent chat activity in all chat rooms.

I can't find that

user136984
Also, I'm being attacked by a curtain. :D

o/ @ParanoidPanda

user136984
@Zacharee1: Here.

user136984
4:14 PM
@KazWolfe: \o :)

user136984
Well, the BBC told me it was breaking anyway...

@ParanoidPanda every murder is getting media craze now?
this is what's wrong with our society
hey paranoid guess what
i've surpassed you in network rep :D

user136984
In the article it says the motives are unclear, in the Daily Mail article on the matter I understand that they claim it was because the Muslim man did not like how they family were dressed, but I can't confirm that.

No, what's wrong with our society is that murder has become way too common

user136984
4:21 PM
@KazWolfe: That's only really because of that rep purge shog9 did about a month ago.

@Serg it doesn't help that it gets so much attention

@Zacharee1 and would it help if we kept silent about it and not reported anything ?

I'm saying the news agencies are taking advantage of this to get views
So if some person decides they need attention, they're going to do something bad, because that's all the media covers: bad stuff

if the news sees "oh, muslims" and "oh, murder" -- FRONT PAGE

while the man who spent his whole life giving his income to others who just died is lucky to get a mention anywhere
(hypothetical example)

4:24 PM
if almost any stereotype lives up to the image (no matter how wrong), the media is gonna jump all over it because people are gonna click, which means ad money.

user136984
> Unconfirmed reports suggested he had objected to the light clothing worn by his victims but Mr Balland said "it's all rumour, the man's not said anything".

@Zacharee1 It's not hypothetical, but you can't see this message because you blocked me.

sigh

@Zacharee1 murderers don't need front pages to be violent. Heck, Jack the Ripper was active over 100 years ago , when interwebs wasn't that popular and there was no mass media, except news papers

user136984
@KazWolfe: Well, the BBC aren't allowed to show ads in the UK so...

4:25 PM
@ParanoidPanda Except the news.

@Serg yeah, but quite a few killings (like terrorism) are in the hopes that lots of people will notice

BBC TV -> BBC Online -> Ad Revenue

user136984
I've never seen any adverts on their online site nor on their TV channels, that's actually something they pride themselves on.

@KazWolfe hmm?

@jokerdino hi!

4:27 PM
And instead of treating these things like everything else (robberies, charities, cruises, murders, whatever), they're blown way out of proportion, giving the perpetrators _exactly_what they want

oh oops, don't want to ruin the bluff.
afk

@jokerdino ha ha.

@Zacharee1 I don't think terrorists like ISIS want to be noticed. They carry out their acts for the sake of control. OK , so what do you propose ? That we print in every paper only positive stuff ? It's like telling a kid all the time "oh you are so smart and pretty" , and then boom - they face up with reality

what? They pretty much want attention.

user136984
@Serg: They do want attention, they want people to have fear of them and for them to have the ability to recruit more people.

4:30 PM
They want control , and supremacy of their pseudo-islamic religion

@Serg no, I'm saying that they should be treated equally. Put whatever actually has the greatest impact or whatever subject is new on the FP

The efforts of ISIS are multifold.

1. Create terror in western world.
2. Make people want to join them in the attacks.
3. Make people hate Muslims so they try to exclude them.
4. Recruit these newly excluded Muslims for future attacks.

don't just report on negative things
tell people about them, but don't give them all the attention, because that's what they want

@Zacharee1 you and me knows media panders to sensitive news for money.

user136984
I read that some sort of French minister or something was saying that they are on the brink of civil war in France due to increased anti-Islamic activity and the Islamic threat. I never knew that that was an official stance on the matter? Do they really have enough extremists there for them to be on the brink of civil war?

user136984
4:32 PM
I read it in the paper the other day.

user136984
A reputable paper too.

@ParanoidPanda it might be more extreme Islamophobia against extreme Islam

Some of the problems with French govt and Muslim population is the negative secularist acts of the government, which attack some of the principles of fundamentalists.

@Zacharee1 reporting negative or positive things is irrelevant. There's tons of good stuff reported daily. But if someting like in Nice,France, goes down, that better be known. We can't not give that attention

The Front Page exists only to sell clicks to advertisers

4:34 PM
"Well , another terrorist attack, just another normal day in the world. Continue living your normal life and don't worry if the next person to be blown up in terrorist attack is you"

@Serg But then why can't we at least give that same attention to the positive things?

I will be back later to talk more crap.

@Serg Knowing about previous terrorist attacks does in no way decrease your likelihood of being a victim of the next one

@Zacharee1 there is tons of attention to positive things. Just open your eyes and look up.

user136984
@Zacharee1: They did start a newspaper once for only positive stories actually, but it went bankrupt and had to shut down. Nobody wants to read the positive stuff.

4:36 PM
@ParanoidPanda exactly, and that's what's sad (so to speak)
@Serg what?

@Zacharee1 at least makes you aware. "Hmmm , terrorist attacks are common these days,maybe i should be aware of how to act when there is an active shooter "

@Serg Like I said I am not saying we ignore terrorist attacks
I am saying we don't give them so much unnecessary attention
they are a big deal, but only because we're causing that
The definition of terrorism is "the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims"

So how much attention we give them ? Come on , Zach. Say what you're saying, don't just say what you're not saying

that requires a lot of attention
I'm saying we don't blow them so much out of proportion

Not good enough. Be specific

4:38 PM
We help the people who were injured, we help the families who lost loved ones
But we don't need to know what the religion of the attacker was
we don't need to know what race
we don't need to know the age
we don't need to know where they were living at the time
we don't need to know which terrorist group they belong to, because that only draws attention to that terrorist group, giving them more strength

um . . . . sorry , no.
People want to know the motivation behind the attacks. ISIS motivation is radical fake islam
So sorry, but that needs to be known

People want to know
because it's entertainment

No, people want to know why things happen
There's nothing entertaining in death , unless you're a serial killer or psycho

Hello :)

hello

4:46 PM
@Serg it's something that provides mental stimulation: something to do to avoid boredom: entertainment

hi

Hi @KazWolfe ! :) Hi @Serg ! :) Hi @Zacharee1 ! :)

Yay Apple, you stupid idiots.
No more headphone jack.

@Zacharee1 there's plenty of things to avoid boredom in modern entertainment. Like Donald Trumps presidential campaing . If we're talking some kind of nasty shiz going down in your city, you will wanna know where, who , and how, and you will turn to news for that info

Now, you can buy Apple-Branded headphones with the Lightning Port for $40 when yours break, instead of the cheap $5 ones in the drugstore checkout line

4:48 PM
@Serg your city. Why does the whole world need to know everything?

user136984
@cl-netbox: \o :)

@Zacharee1 because it affects the whole world. Especially ISIS. They've become threat to anyone on the globe, and we need to be aware

@Serg the only reason they've been able to do so is because of the massive amount of attention we've been giving them

@terdon Hi ! :) Do you remember when I asked you the other day about the problems with ssh access to my ubuntu server ? After trying many complicated things, I finally got it solved ... and guess what ? The most easiest way did the trick : sudo ufw allow ssh ! ... hahaha ... there are things out there ... :D :D :D
@ParanoidPanda Hi my friend ! :)

@Zacharee1 attention has nothing to do with the fact of them being sponsored. World media can give whole bunch or attention to some radical dudes from who-knows-where , but without money and weapons , they can't do jack

4:53 PM
@Serg and they wouldn't be known unless they had attention. Without being known, they wouldn't get that money

gutten tag!

@Zacharee1 you clearly don't know how black market works .

@Serg I really don't want to continue this. I'm just getting more and more frustrated on very little sleep

@Zacharee1 sure, we can stop this. I personally have better things to do
