I am wondering how did videonauth done it?

@HenryWHHack done what?

@Videonauth Become a Mod.

I'm a mod ? not that would know the election is not even started :))

Does anyone like my new profile pic or shud I switch it back?

Leave it as it is now :)

Anonymous
12:31 AM
@SQuirel I like it!

I am 3/4 evil. >:) :)

Anonymous
night all -- going to do some reading

ok

12:46 AM
I should stop being jealous of videonauth. He is a nice guy and very hard working! :)
I'm sorry Videonauth! :(
Will you ever forgive me?

1:12 AM
@HenryWHHack forgive you what? that you're kidding around? well so be it you have my forgiveness xD

@Videonauth It's true.

dont worry tho :) were all humans

Hi there

@Lucio Long time!

Awesome time for new elections on the site! This will bring a lot of fresh stuff and fun to the site
@tim good luck pal! Pretty sure you'll rock on it ;)
@chaskes Eric!
not too much this time haha

Tim
1:14 AM
ta :)

how are you guys doing?

Tim
about to sleep now
Just leaving that there... "You should see my mankini"

@Videonauth +1 Star.

@Tim haha i wish i were a native english guy
go take rest Tim, you're a big brilliant elephant :P

hi Lucio!!

1:19 AM
Hey buddy!
you're rocking this night
3-0 last time i saw the match

futbol?

since you're a sports man don't need to mention it :)
yasss

Ahhh. I don't actually follow that :P
only football (i.e. American) and a little baseball :)
But good to hear haha :D

anyone here have any suggestions for gettting started with Arduino? Or am I overthinking this

You're overthinking this.

1:20 AM
^that

1) Buy a getting started book (if you don't have project ideas) and an arduino 2) profit!

Two Steps to Get Started with Arduino
a whole blog with that :D

:D:D
Anyone know a good site that will tell you what parts you need to put a specific stereo in your car? Crutchfield is where I normally go, but this particular stereo is no longer sold so they don't list it :/

@Seth you recommend getting a starter kit for arduino or just getting the pieces separately?

@Chan-HoSuh eh, I would buy my pieces separately, unless you plan on following a guide that uses that starter kit. That way you only get (and pay for) what you need.
(disclaimer: doesn't own an arduino, although he wishes he did)

1:24 AM
@Seth thanks... appreciate it.. now I only need an idea for a project :D

lol

@Seth oh yeah, because you spend all your dough on yachting or something, right? I seem to recall..

@Chan-HoSuh I got this book from the library, it was pretty good: shop.oreilly.com/product/9780596155520.do
@Chan-HoSuh If you do it right you can spend next to nothing on it ;)
But it's true. I do tend to spend most of my (little) spare cash on it.

I can feel a lot of nice people around since the elections are here
the mod stuff room is also active, again..
@fossfreedom and you my friend, you deserve that membership.

@Lucio wasn't my idea hehe
I expect it will die again soon :/

1:32 AM
it is its destination :S
I'm writing my gh page. it looks pretty straight-forward, i like it

Hi

hello little squirrel
what are you eating?

"Little SQuirrel"???

:O

...?

1:44 AM
that..that is correct

...

i have a little port view
you may understand

........

and still i can see the whole body so..

...

1:45 AM
it is not that large if you know what i mean
@Seth i love the pics that you share via twitter! i do wonder, do you visit some of those landscapes often?

2:08 AM
Good night people
good night little @SQuirel

user139252
I caught a Vulpix!

Which of these looks the best?
They are all similarly priced and have free shipping.
The top two are 3-in-1 adapters, offering HDMI, DVI, and DisplayPort outputs.
The number of Thunderbolt to VGA adapters is startling... why are we still connecting displays with VGA cables?

@NathanOsman displays? No
Legacy projectors still use em a lot
I think essentially anything modern with a lcd's HDMI or DP by now

Fair enough... any opinion on the adapters?

@NathanOsman I'd think they all run the same chipset.

2:20 AM
:P

1 hour later…
3:36 AM
I am having the same issue as mentioned here askubuntu.com/questions/521372/… Can anyone help me in this regard ?

@Lucio I visit the ones that are near as much as I can, but the US is too big for me to visit most of them often.

Guess whos back

I've been here and here though, @Lucio (both pics from the US Dept. of Interior).
@Serg Welcome back! How'd China go?

@Seth quite well, already wanna go back there.

You've come back just in time for the drama lol :/
@Serg Cool! :)

3:49 AM
I have my own drama here, i lost 10k rep

@Serg HOORAY YOUR BACK @Videonauth Serg is back! :)

^_^ @HenryWHHack i missed you too buddy.

@Seth so what's the drama ? Also, is there any way i can get back my 10k rep ? I've lost due to serial upvoting .

@Serg That's... part of the drama.
15
Q: I lost 3000+ rep as a reversal

Pilot6It is possible that someone serially upvoted my posts. I can't see it. But the weird thing is that some of my answers were unaccepted. That is a puzzle. What does this mean?

The other drama is the election, but that's mostly good drama I guess. If there is such a thing
@Serg if you have questions about it reply to the message you received, one of the SE staff should respond at some point..

3:55 AM
Wow . . . .ok . . . .

@Serg So did you eat extra food for me? :P

@Serg wow 10k
that's a lot :(

@Seth yes, i did eat for two people :) That's one of the biggest things i will miss about China. But the biggest is my gf
Yup, im officially non-single

good for you!

@edwinksl yeah, i was at 33k, now down to 22k.

4:00 AM
@Serg Was the great firewall of china blocking you from accessing askubuntu.com.
Why are people losing reps?

read the meta post I linked above --^

@HenryWHHack it wasn't really blocking anything. I was just too busy every day. We were walking around a lot. And after visiting the great wall, i officially hate stairs. Hooray for elevators

@Serg hahaha, that's a lot of stairs all right xD

Yes. And very steep stairs too. On the way down, i thought my legs are gonna give up and i will just go counting those stairs with my spine.
Acupuncture did the trick though. I didn't feel any discomfort in my lower back for like 3 days after all the needles

user139252
@Serg has returned!

4:13 AM
Videonauth is missing the welcome back party for Serg.

@TheBrownOne i sure have returned :D missed me much ?

user139252
I cannot wait for Pokemon Go to go public. It is so much fun!

user139252
@Serg yes, I did. The room felt so empty

^_^ well, it sure is not empty now

@TheBrownOne you signed up for the pokemon go field test?

4:17 AM
And probably smelly too, because i still haven't taken a shower after the flight

user139252
I might have.

user139252
Am I allowed to say that I have?

i think you can as long as you don't reveal the contents of the test

user139252
Yeah, I just read through all of the confidentiality stuff again

that's pretty cool

user139252
4:25 AM
It's pretty fun, the way it works. If you played ingress, you can kinda see some similar elements, but that's to be expected since it comes from the same developer

i wish i had signed up earlier

user139252
I can't say exactly what those elements are, but I think Pokemon fans will appreciate the app

i played pokemon blue and yellow back in the old days. does that count as being a fan? ;)

:O
I knew SmokeDetector was not a bot.
The Mods and SmokeDetector was lying.

that's a pretty serious accusation....

4:39 AM
So the mods was not lying.

(protip. bots are 'regular' users with the same reputation requirements as anyone else, so at some point any bot had a user behind it)
Naw, you're merely conversing out of your posterior in this instance.

Sorry SmokeDetector and the Mods!
Wait so who coded @SmokeDetector is it undo?

undo is in charge.
but the Charcoal dev team wrote smokey

What is SmokeDetector programming languages is it Python?

yes

4:45 AM
;)
I saw his github page. ;)
I was going to ask how does SmokeDetector work but asking too many questions may annoy you guys.
How does SmokeDetector work?

5:35 AM
@Serg Hello :) welcome back, how was your china trip :) ?

SORRY!

@HenryWHHack for what all the sorry adn so on, no need for that :)

Someone did a serial down-voting to many of my posts. :)

5:50 AM
How do I cast a Vote for Mod's,Yesterday I received a caucus badge visiting a page?

@MuditKapil you can cast votes for moderators in about 5 1/2 days on that same page you visited to see all their nomination posts. --> askubuntu.com/election?cb=1

By adding comment to a desired candidate.

@MuditKapil since I'm so new on this site i not have seen an election in action, maybe @Seth can shed some light for you here.

I've just posted a comment and someone has deleted @Seth has done awesome work for the community specially codecs.
@Seth I posted a comment,Does that count a vote.
I feel the people who are very good like @Oli,@Seth should be Mod's again and I want to see @Fabby as another MOD.
That's another Question Whether you Guy's pay @Oli What he deserves.

6:11 AM
@MuditKapil a new election does not mean they have to step down, it is more they need some backup forces and hiring two new moderators on top of that. But I highly doubt that Fabby will step up and nominate himself to be a moderator as he is currently very busy with the real world, having a new Job which takes most of his time.

May be I don't know him,But he tends to help new user a lot like me.

We all do love to help, otherwise we would be here :) when we sometimes not answer to a question in chat it is mostly because we are not knowing the answer. :)

No @Fabby has helped me a lot,The person is very good and precious for this site.
@Rinzwind He is also very good and nice.
@Rinzwind I want to see him as Moderator .Of course as backup force as you mentioned
May be in front line.
@Tim She also can be a perfect Mod.
I feel Mod's should not be a rocket Scientist But have an abilty to keep site clean and helpful.

6:57 AM
@MuditKapil Maybe one day you should consider running for moderator too

@edwinksl thank you for your supporting words on my nomination post

@Videonauth No problem at all; you earned it!

it still baffles me, i would never have thought to get so much supporting comments

Well that's what happens when the community sees a deserving candidate

for sure even if i wont make it in this election it will give me fuel to go on even more engaged :)

7:10 AM
you stand a pretty good chance as far as i can tell ;)

i think so too, but still hope for the best but expect nothing is my course of action
this way i wont be disappointed when it doesn't work out
there are a few good candidates

How many votes can we cast ? two positions available so two ?? Or only one and the top 2 guys will be selected ??

in fact 6 out of those 11 candidates have a good chance.

Yeah, makes it harder to decide who to vote for
@SeverusTux elections here use a modifed STV voting system

@Videonauth name them :=)
@SeverusTux 2 :)

7:16 AM
@Rinzwind No i wont :) because its just my opinion

nice :D

I'll try to stay neutral as much as possible

@Videonauth I find only 2 interesting candidates ( my opinion ;-) )

but if you read carefully youll see where i have commented

@SeverusTux 3 is the best number ;)
since you pick 3 in preferencial order

7:18 AM
1 upvote or downvote per candidate in primary phase, max of 3 ranked choices in election phase

@SeverusTux I agree. and I can stretch it to 3 if I am forced. The others all have at least 3 or more arguments against them
and to me a mod should be impecable >:-DDDDD

Hello

heya

Hi :D

I honestly think AskUbuntu is on a whole different level than Ubuntu Forums

7:20 AM
@Rinzwind perfect is hard

@Rinzwind can you explain that word, i had to look it up and i fond nothing on lep.org

@grooveplex it is!

@grooveplex in a good way or bad way?

AU = good, UF = Well, um, more noobs and clutter

@Videonauth "perfect" :=D

7:21 AM
reading the ubuntu forums gives me a headache

@JourneymanGeek I said "should".

it is way too cluttered like you said

@edwinksl this.

UF is a discussion site. AU is a Q+A site
2 different animals :)

ah o.k., well then I'm out of the picture, I think I'm far from perfect, but maybe i simply overanalyze myself

7:23 AM
@Rinzwind it is unfortunate that discourse is being sunsetted

@Videonauth oh but you see... perfection is a goal ;-) and I will pick the 3 best out of the group

discourse is a better software for forums discussions that whatever ubuntu forums is using
*than

well then i might ask you after the election who you picked

@edwinksl discourse's kind of a pain to run tho

@Videonauth at the moment Tim and you are #1 and #2 ;-)

7:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek yeah that is true but i still find it easier to use ;)

Only 65% of questions answered on our site., others have more than that :( :(

@SeverusTux then go do something about it ;-)
@SeverusTux hey I am on that list <3

haha :D

@Rinzwind that are wanted posters ;)

at least the review list is well under 1k :X
@Videonauth yeah I already got fossy >:) now aiming for Oli

7:26 AM
but how'd you catch yourself then ? xD

well one more LQ to review and 19 more late answers then I'm through for today

@Videonauth i would become the huntee and use my cloak to make me invissible

ah :)
i still wonder, did you choose your name because you're a Terry Pratchet fan?

yes and the icon I choose cuz I am an anime fan (it is from Elfen lied; at the time one of my fav. series)
now it looks old :D

7:34 AM
@Videonauth your meta participation is a little low. you could improve that ;)

I'm on it :)

@Videonauth seems like the wrong approach to me ;-) now it looks like you want to fulfill the mod requirements just to fulfill the mod requirements. Your work on meta the next few days is not going to make a difference. It is your meta work over a year or longer that will.
see why I aint going for moderator here ;-)

@Rinzwind yeah but what I wanted to say I will show more presence there from now on. in fact this is a result of me being very new on the page still

That is always good :-)

Don't forget, most mod tasks are things you can do as a high rep user

7:43 AM
And don't tell anyone you are new >:-D

(other than one shot killing spammers, flag queue and such)

The one shot killing spammers should be a high level privilige :P

nuking accounts requires a special level of trust tho

@JourneymanGeek I meant their topics :=)
not the actual one shotting of a user.
I got an interesting question for all under 15k rep:
how and when do you protect a question?

So I was reading "A Theory of Moderation" (blog.stackoverflow.com/2009/05/a-theory-of-moderation) and I noticed that it says "In the case of serious disputes, communicate directly with users via email to help mediate and resolve those disputes."

7:50 AM
@Rinzwind Well why should I hide it it is clearly written on my nomination post

Do moderators actually expect to get emails from users?

@Videonauth cuz it is a "negative" ;-)

I can't even find moderators' emails easily on their AU profile pages

@edwinksl they do :D and probably not from the most educated parts of human kind

@edwinksl there's a PM system for mods
or you can sometimes find them on chat
the email system predates the mod message system and they discourage us using email these days

7:51 AM
@Rinzwind no its a sword which cuts both ways look at the time and then on my account age and you know the time i spend on helping maintaining the site, otherwise my score would not be possible

@JourneymanGeek Makes sense to discourage email. Maybe the blog post should be updated to reflect that.

@Videonauth sure but getting the nomination means to get cut the least :-D
oh man D:
In France 2 dudes decide to rob a McDonald. They grabbed 2k in euro out of the till
Only to find out a group of 11 soldiers from an anti-terrorist unit where there eating hamburgers.

LOL That is what i call a bad day xD

lol
Karma :X

@Rinzwind true story?

7:57 AM
yes just popped up in my news feed
dutch version: ad.nl/buitenland/…

as i expected, this news showed up in r/nottheonion in reddit lol

lol

@Rinzwind good that i can read it and understand it up to 90% of the time but speaking i think is a complete different ballgame :)

@Videonauth english version connexionfrance.com/…

no need i have read the dutch version, since im only living 20 minutes from dutch border away im somehow used to it

8:02 AM
@Rinzwind could have been worse

I live less than 20km from the german and belgium border ;-)
@JourneymanGeek that's true :D

They could have run into this guy badassoftheweek.com/shrestha.html

hehe well krefeld is about 45 car minutes from venlo

@JourneymanGeek damn :D :D :D
@Videonauth we live close by. Roermond

hehe well :) then were technically neighbours :D

8:13 AM
