Q: Kernel Install Issue: New USB Device Found, Product: USB Optical Mouse Repeating

BFranksFirst time poster here. I am updating to Linux kernel version 4.6.3 and used Lilo to install it. I am running Ubuntu version 16.04lts. When I went to select the new kernel everything started out fine, but it is currently doing something a little weird. It keeps printing out the following: [ X...

@terdon For real this time :) askubuntu.com/questions/792338/…

@AndroidDev your comment has a typo :p

@Zacharee1 Fixed.

:D

3:07 PM
@Zacharee1 I know, ironic after I just gave @terdon a hard time for leaving out a comma :)

@grooveplex FYI, if you do [unix.se], it'll auto-parse it to Unix & Linux
@AndroidDev :P

@AndroidDev Bah, it could be argued that, in fact, that was an Oxford comma which can—and indeed according to some, must—be omitted.

Guys!
How do I remove the GUI of debian.

!syuG

I used an image, I need it without its GUI

3:09 PM
@blade19899 sudo rm -rf /*?

Just the server
@Zacharee1 No joking

:)

This is a headache for a company

How about using the server image?

3:10 PM
@AndroidDev This was supposed to be the server image.

ha

How do I remove the GUI?

@blade19899 remove it or just stop it from loading?

@blade19899 And it has a GUI???
@Zacharee1 You forgot --no-preserve-root

@AndroidDev Yeah. It's Debian 8. With gnome3 interface

3:12 PM
@AndroidDev the asterisk bypasses that I think

cool
@blade19899 you should go upvote your favorite avatar on Meta

Heh, Nathan became ubutun.

yep

What about ubonto next? Or obonto? Or Uboonto?

3:19 PM
hmm
idk what to do for those :p

Boo!
Something scary maybe? A ghost? Boo!?

hmm
@NathanOsman does your script not work with Tampermonkey?
the chat status one

@Zacharee1 Yup. I'm using it right now.

hmm

(Tampermonkey in Chrome)

3:30 PM
oh there we go

Hello :)

it's weird to see it there now :p

Keep it on. Then it won't be weird :D

lol false typing triggers

So far, it seems to be working fine since I restarted it.
It used to always crash after a week or so of running.

3:35 PM
Didn't work. Reinstalling....

lol
@blade19899 choose an avatar
or request a new one

@Zacharee1 Whut?

We all changed our gravatars...
@Zacharee1 made ones for us based on common misspellings of "Ubuntu".
I ended up with one for "ubutun".

@SmokeDetector usually the spam answers at least try to seem relevant

Q: Fresh Ubuntu 16.04 install with Nvidia GTX 1070 is crashing

PitI am one of the lucky people who received a MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X already, and so I decided to upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04 via a fresh install. The installation completed without any problems, and afterwards I installed the nvidia-367 driver from ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa. The install worked wit...

darn it
I don't have an XCF for unbootu
time to recreate it I guess
@edwinksl I recreated the unbootu avatar if you want the new version
Apparently I earned 200 rep today on Meta meta.askubuntu.com/help/badges/41/mortarboard?userid=274320

5:01 PM
@Zacharee1 What about ubutuna or ubtuna? Icon could be a penguin eating fish.

They should be realistic

@KazWolfe Ubutuna is realistic.
> A good Linux Distro?
Whats a good linux Distro?
im trying to find..A good Distro..
That will mask of my ip.
Because **Ubutuna** Doesnt i prefer Vmware images..
But i can run The Isos Off Of vmare to but..
Can someone please help me thanx...

Always nice to notice an offensive undertone when you try to explain something to someone askubuntu.com/q/792068/72216 :)

@ByteCommander wtf

^^ exactly.

5:08 PM
i... what.... how....

And it's funny, so it would perfectly fit the series.

is IP masking even a thing? i mean, i know VPNs, but can a client alone mask their IP?
and why do people think that it can
this guy is one of those "oh, i want to look hacker so i run linux and use terminal and type fast" people

Yep.
And he excels at it, don't you think?

(who are huge insults to the real hackers)
what does vmware have to do with anything here?

No idea.

5:11 PM
Too scared to install on bare metal.

I just wanted to prove that "ubutuna" is a real thing.

I HEF TO VIRTULIZE IT.
2

makes sense. Reminds me... Does anyone have Xenserver experience here?

nope.

Or Mac Hardware experience.

5:12 PM
@Zacharee1 okay, so now we know "ubutuna" is a thing. We need an image!
@KazWolfe I gave it a shot once.

Because XenServer does recognize USB keyboards plugged into a mac.
Which is annoy.

Only just to test PCI-passthru for a VGA adapter though.

pls be less annoy xenserver

Q: How to prevent special group to delete files or folders?

victor212Folder path: /var/www/html group name: "ftpusers" user: admini" How to prevent from group "ftpusers" to delete files or folders in html folder, but allow them to create files or folders? and user "admini" (not in group "ftpusers") get a full control Thank You

create but no delete?
what about edit...

5:21 PM
sticky bit?

See, this is what annoys me about Linux. Windows' permission system is far more powerful and customizable than Linux's.
@ByteCommander Users could then overwrite null

You can use ACLs on Linux too.

Linux ACLs are still only RWX.
Windows has seperate things for create, read, edit, delete, edit permissions, change attributes, etc.

@NathanOsman @ByteCommander @everyoneelse suggest in comments on Meta. I'm going to forget about the chat messages.

@KazWolfe sorry?! not true.

5:22 PM
k

windows permisions are easy to bypass.

@Rinzwind Yeah, but you can set a lot more there, and be a lot more fine-grained

Windows ACLs are more complex than Linux / Unix.
I'll give you that one.

right. and setting them is important?

And that complexity is sometimes useful.

5:23 PM
the ability to mess them when you are not suppose to is not?
r e a l l y?

Basically a glorified chmod() for Windows.
It's... complex. To say the least.

And both sides have their advantages and their disadvantages

and to add to that: simpler is better in this regard ;-)
windows users tend to not go for ACEs cuz they are too difficult

Like, for example, I can't (in Linux without ACLs) give write powers to g:developers and g:sysops, but allow read to g:finance
Windows, that's fairly easy.

windows users would use chmod 777 :=D
@KazWolfe of course not. we do not have a g:

5:27 PM
@Rinzwind Shorthand for group: -_-

not in linux >:-S

hush, you.
The point is, ACLs are complicated, yes. But they can be exceedingly useful.

the chmod system works for 80% of the linux users ;-)
and the other 20 know about ACLs.
well maybe not 100% in total >:D

And yes, the average Windows user has no idea about ACLs, and "write everything" would be enough.

@KazWolfe ACL as in Linux? or did you mean ACEs?

5:29 PM
But if you have a competent admin running things, ACLs become really handy really fast.

I run about 30 google instances ;=)
and 10 amazons

Are you having to move files between users and whatnot?

we have that automated.
single point of entry through ssh and a chroot.
and the system makes backup of what is put there and moves it to the website

still, it's mildly annoying that linux doesn't have the same grain as Windows does sometimes.
(For example, you can create files, but not delete or edit them)
or a special folder where you can create files, but you can't see the contents of the folder

Jibberish51I'm trying to secure an account on our server called ssh_user that is used purely for connecting via SSH to our server. Why, "nevermind"?
Also this was the first time I used Unix & Linux as a shorthand for Unix & Linux

My god. When will people learn to stop adding APT repos to dissimilar OSes?!

yes
approx 22 years

Unless you know exactly what you're doing, you never even touch that.
and if you know exactly what you're doing, there's probably a better and easier way

people vote for a brexit. people vote for trump. for wilders.
so I'd say for as long as PPAs exists

Thank you. I suggest you add that as a comment.

6:33 PM
lol

@Rinzwind But these aren't PPAs. They're manually editing the sources file!

No I meant @KazWolfe

even worse _O-

But @Rinzwind go ahead

@grooveplex way ahead of you
The next person who I see with that question will warrant an answer from me that will give me my first ever offensive flag.
And it will be worth it.
Step 1: Buy a mac
Step 2: Don't go near linux because you need to be at least this smart to use it.

as T and the coefficient of Gravity approach infinity, "No" increases in magnitude until it collapses the universe.
:P

bye!

we can has mod to nook?

the universe can not collapse according the Morgan Freeman.
neutrinos prevent it from collapsng

@Rinzwind true, except that as No, and T, increases in magnitude it emits a massive amount of antineutrinos, which in turn nullify that, and then oblivion ensues :)

aha

Can I purge apache form Debian8 if I want to use nginx instead?

@blade19899 Why not ? :)

@cl-netbox how to install nginx docs online just mentions to disable it, and not purge. I thought maybe that was intentional...

@blade19899 then leave it installed ... but what if you never had it installed before ? I don't think apache is a dependency ... :)

@cl-netbox Already removed it, nothing breaked...

Someone on SU said SATA stands for SCSI ATA -_-
You people don't like ubutnu, huh

that... almost sounds right.
Isn't it Serial ATA?

Yep
Gotta get this all out at once since I was just watching a movie
Alice through the Looking Glass. Great effects, but not the plotline or directing to match.

Ooh

Easy to remember that it stands for "serial ATA" because I vividly remember its predecessor, parallel ATA (PATA).

8:41 PM
Yep
Ah PATA

Man, those were the fun days when you had to set a switch to select which was the master and which was the slave.

With its different cable densities and inability to stably put a CD drive and HDD on the same cable

And if you didn't get the cable seated properly, it would still work... sort of...

Lol
And the different sizes for laptops and desktops

I remember having issues with a CD-RW drive that were caused by me not pushing the cable in all the way.

8:42 PM
And the bent/broken device pins

And the cables that had some of the female slots blocked.

Oh yes
That was fun

I remember getting a CD-RW drive from Radio Shack that came with one such adapter.

Ooh

Took the cable back to the store and they switched it for one on the shelf.
SATA is so much superior it's not even funny.

What is it with all of you changing your profile pictures to strange things? :D

@ParanoidPanda exactly that.
We changed our profile pictures to strange things.
Go ahead and choose one. Just pick a misspelling of "ubuntu".
I've got "ubutun".
There is also "ubantu", "ubunaut", "ubunut", etc. I think we might be getting "ubutuna".

user136984
I hope you'll be changing them back some time... I'm going to start confusing you with each other... :D

user136984
Ubunana?

user136984
Ooh! Apparently that's a real word (no idea what it means though)! :D

How do you know it's a word?

user136984
8:47 PM
Because my spell-check said it was...

user136984
Or what about Ubanana? :P

"upuntu" - with a football.

That's actually a thing.

You know Ubuntu isn't only an OS right
Can you write down the suggestions in a comment on the Meta post?
