you can aswell brute force the solutions but takes forever to calculate

Well , we don't want to brute force it , we want intelligent , recursive solution

Q: The Timestamping inside Ubuntu turns out to be controlled by US and Foreign Patents - how do we deal with this?

Todd GlasseyI have a problem - turns out all timestamping inside all UBUNTU systems violates a US Patent for which there is an illegally filed and abandoned instance in the EU. It creates a criminal fraud from using any timestamping in any Operating System in the EU. In Britain for instance the British Con...

what on earth that guy is rambling about ?

i have no clue lol
for sure i want nothing of his weed
must be bad shit

Hey guys.
Having trouble installing Ubuntu... :/

Q: Wifi and Ethernet unclaimed on ubuntu-based linux

KillianKempsI'm trying to finish the installation of elementaryOS (an Ubuntu-based distribution) on a Thinkpad E460. However, I can't neither have Ethernet nor Wifi. In fact, lshw -c network -sanitize shows both devices as UNCLAIMED. I explain this by the version of the distribution which is based on Ubuntu...

kos
@jokerdino Looks better, thanks

6:39 PM
@Videonauth I can't get into GRUB.
The installer ran fine, but I can't see any way to let it boot to GRUB instead of Win 10's boot manager.

@ByteCommander again someone mentioning the w-word .....

Windows has been a word before it was trademarked.

Yes, GRUB is installed in EFI mode to the boot record of my SSD (sdb), but the W-word is still dominating it.

ah EFI mode well my hardware is able to use EFI but i still prefer legacy

Same here - my Ubuntu uses legacy bios

6:43 PM
on the other side side by side with the w-word doesnt leave you much choice or ?

@terdon "pestilential hamburger", followed by a Benjamin Franklin allusion! Awesome answer.

@chaskes Indeed, gave him a +, especially for criticizing the new Gedit! :)

Do the 10k+ reppers use the delete queue?

It's not really a queue, is it?
And I have to admit that I probably was less than 10 times on that page since I became able to...

OK, call it delete list.
If 5 of you go through it once in a while, our queue will be a lot less. ;)

6:55 PM
@ByteCommanderi have something for you if you get buntu running :) paste.ubuntu.com/16242973 this will purge the ugly gedit

@jokerdino Most of the links are greyed out for me and say I don't have permission to VTD there. :/
So I probably need 20k first?

Let me check the privs.

@Videonauth Thanks, I'll probably check that out later, but currently I'm struggling with W10's boot manager.

Looks like 20k can VTD answers while 10K can VTD closed questions.

I even ran boot-repair from the live CD to no avail. And it recommend to run the Win command 'bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\ubuntu\shimx64.efi' but that did not change anything either...
@jokerdino Yes, I could VTD on the single question that's currently in the list, all others are answers. But exactly with this one I disagree actually.

7:00 PM
MariaDB is already in Ubuntu, right?

Can't test because Win is not letting me boot it... :(
But why delete a question that has score +3 and an accepted answer with score +2? Closing (which it is) would be enough IMO.

The delete votes would fade away.
Can you get your back to 20k?

missing 105 points up to that...
And a working Ubuntu on my laptop.
Checking if askubuntu.com/questions/666631/… contains anything helpful...

I installed Linux on an external because I didnt want to mess up the default bootloader.
I only upvoted once. O.o

You really want somebody to delete stuff for you, don't you? o.O

7:09 PM
Not me. I swear.
I hit that 24 vote answer on terminal.
Someone else is playing goofball here.

Not that I would complain, but...

Didn't know goofball is a real word.
@ByteCommander it will get reversed and the person apprehended.

I just got 115 points in two minutes! O.O

you will lose it in 24 hours. Tough luck.

Aww....

7:12 PM
Who exactly would that be though?

So 1 day of trusted user tools for me now until you take them away again?

Yeah maybe.

why will he loose it in 24 hours ?

because I am booting the guy who voted him.

ah ?

7:14 PM
@jokerdino I guess you have more ways to find that out, but I guess we can narrow the list of suspects to the people currently in this room.

Can you screenshot it and upload here?

From... Windows?

well i was voting on some answers of him i have read but stil the tab open and they where helpfull for me so is that wrong ?

yeah, whichever one that works
we have found him

yeah then do your thing

7:16 PM
@Videonauth you don't go on a voting spree on a person. That's just wrong.

ok and now ?

@Videonauth the system will automatically reverse any such voting patterns.

user139252
What happened?

So you know who it was? How many + were from that same person?

7:18 PM
@Fabby aw, I missed it :(

@ByteCommander All but one from videonauth

user139252
Does anyone want to write a 3-5 page paper on the movie Stand and Deliver for me?

You can really see every vote by all of us?

no

YESH,my code is twerking !! Wooo!!

7:19 PM
I thought that would be hidden, even for mods usually...

@ByteCommander I can't tell you.
But he just admitted to have voted for you.

user139252
What are we (not) voting on?

@TheBrownOne If that's double spaces, I could do that

user139252
@Serg I really need to do my own homework :P

user139252
I was just complaining.

user139252
7:22 PM
Choose a popular movie that illustrates an exemplary teacher (i.e Stand and Deliver, Dead Poet’s Society…) Watch the movie in its entirety – do not rely on your memory having watched it previously since this assignment demands you use a different lens than just simple entertainment.
Read through the following carefully so you know what to watch for…then prepare an 3-5 page essay that includes the following.
Describe and analyze the teacher’s dramatic success in preparing students.
What kind of a teacher is he/she?

I used to like writing essays a lot. Even wanted to be an English major at some point

@jokerdino ???

@TheBrownOne Watch "Fack You Göhte" - if there's an English translation... ;D
@TheBrownOne I just received 115 points within two minutes, after I discussed with jokerdino that 20k are required to cast delete votes on answers and that I would have needed 105 more points to reach those...

user139252
Ah, so it was suspicious.

Well , as of now my python code communicates with microcontroller alright, i can read potentiometer value or toggle LEDs . . . need one more idea

7:35 PM
rebooting, hoping I get to see GRUB this time...

user139252
@Serg How many LEDs are available for toggling?

@TheBrownOne 8, but the LED 1 doesn't work for some reason, so . . . 7

user139252
Darn. I was going to suggest making something that uses the LEDs to make letters to spell out messages :P

Well , I have LCD for that, I can print stuff there , but that's . . . simple

user139252
That's why I was going to suggest LEDs

user139252
7:39 PM
You would have to figure out which LEDs to turn on to form which characters, decide how long each character should be seen, etc.

user139252
How many potentiometers are on there?

1

user139252
darn, nevermind.

user139252
I was going to say you could make a game that requires tuning each potentiometer exactly to turn on lights. Like, have it read the level from each one and if it matches a value, turn on a light

user139252
But, if you change another potentiometer, it might turn off the light you just turned on

user139252
7:44 PM
So you have to work to find out at which level each one needs to be at to turn on all the lights

user139252
Wait a second.... GUYS I TOTALLY JUST REMEMBERED THAT CIVIL WAR PREMIERS TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT!

user139252
I wonder if there are still tickets at my local theater...

It's OK , I can come up some other idea later . Time for the last lecture in CS2

user139252
Darn, sold out :(

T__T I'm seriously gonna miss this professor and the class overall was interesting

7:50 PM
@ByteCommander Yeah, I like the clean look but I also hate the Mystery Menus that seem to be everywhere now. On a phone UI is one thing, but to have to guess what's behind a box with 3 lines on a big screen is crazy.

pestilential hamburger menu
love that

user139252
Hey @chaskes!

hey

user139252
What did you need a VPS for?

nothing specific yet. maybe learn how to set up a website and wordpress from scratch

7:54 PM
Heads up: we will be testing http://stackoverflow.com behind a different proxy provider in a few moments. Shout if you see anything crazy.

user139252
Alright, go ahead and make a user here

user139252
Once you do, just tell me the username you picked. I'll add you to the www-data group so that you can do a little hosting stuff.

ok, thanks. I'm working so I'll do that later tonight.

@ByteCommander Does this mean you solved the GRUB problem with Arch?

Huh? No, that was my desktop.

Ah, OK

I solved the problem with Windows 10 dominating GRUB on my laptop.

Ah, very good! \o/

user136984
8:21 PM
@Serg: I am assuming that the 'AskUbuntu gang' has disassembled by now? :P

Actually I think that now my UEFI loads the Windows Boot Manager which is configured to load GRUB as primary option...

Cool!

But now GRUB has a hell lot of entries where I don't know what they're good for

Unfortunately, I don't have any thing that is UEFI. Grrrrrrr. I am still on older BIOS booting MBs.

@ParanoidPanda partially yes :p

8:23 PM
@Terrance Me too until last Saturday.
Now I have an acer notebook, but its UEFI menu still looks like a BIOS one.
And you can count the tweakable options in there with your fingers :(

@ParanoidPanda yeah, sort of . . . Fabby is leaving for some time . . . .others are probably sleeping

Also, isn't it hilarious that you have to set a Supervisor password to unlock the Secure Boot setting, but when you disabled it, you can clear the password again?
Doing a quick reboot after the initial updates etc, hoping it now uses the nvidia driver... BRB

@ByteCommander Interesting.
@ByteCommander I have an old MSI MB in my system right now, and it seems to work fine.

Yay, I love SSDs, they boot so fast :D

@ByteCommander virtual SSD high five, insert your drive here

8:32 PM
Ugh! Bug in add-apt-repository found!
It throws tracebacks when the user entered a non-existing PPA.

Isn't that what's supposed to happen ?
Besides , add-apt-repository is in python

I see it is Python, but it should not throw tracebacks but only print the available PPAs of the entered user (which it does below the tracebacks):
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fossfreedom/ppa
[sudo] password for bytecommander:
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/softwareproperties/ppa.py", line 102, in _get_https_content_py3

  File "/usr/lib/python3.5/urllib/request.py", line 162, in urlopen
    return opener.open(url, data, timeout)
  File "/usr/lib/python3.5/urllib/request.py", line 471, in open
    response = meth(req, response)

@ByteCommander
$ sudo -E add-apt-repository ppa:fossfreedom/ppa
[sudo] password for xieerqi:
Cannot add PPA: 'ppa:fossfreedom/ppa'.
Please check that the PPA name or format is correct.
Preserve your environment
That was one of the questions asked today on the site

Hum?
What OS?

Ubuntu of course , 14.04

8:39 PM
You're still on Trusty, I'm on Xenial.

OK , lemme start my VM

time to ubuntu-bug add-apt-repository...

Running my Xenial here now too! :)

Q: Unable to mount New Volume

oshirowanenWhen I plug in my encrypted USB drive, I get this message: Anyone know how this can be corrected? It was working fine yesterday.

@ByteCommander got the same error :/

8:46 PM
bug confirmed.
Thanks.

@ByteCommander sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fossfreedom/rhythmbox
That one works.
Interesting though.

@Terrance Yes, it works normally. but he has no PPA called /ppa.
It only throws that double-exception when the entered PPA does not exist for the selected launchpad user.

@ByteCommander Makes sense.

But below the exception, it lists the available ppas of that user.
Using nvidia 361.42 driver now \o/

361.42 works great! I have been using that for a while now on my GTX560Ti.
Seen too many issues with 364

8:50 PM
@ByteCommander well , isn't that supposed to be part of stderr ? user can redirect it out if they wanna

@ByteCommander Looks like fossfreedom doesn't have Xenial release files yet anyway.
E: The repository 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/fossfreedom/rhythmbox/ubuntu xenial Release' does not have a Release file.

@Serg It is printed on STDERR, but the useful part is there as well (list of existing PPAs).
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fossfreedom/ppa 2> /dev/null
Error: 'ppa:fossfreedom/ppa' invalid

@ByteCommander yeah, i saw that . . . OK . . . let's file a bug

@Terrance I can install it though.
You probably need "main" instead of "Release".

Let me try
GAH
Still fails
It installs, but I wonder if that is from the normal repos

8:57 PM
Oh, you're using the rhythmbox one...

Yeah

I wanted his indicator - sorry, that'S a different one.

user136984
@cl-netbox: A shame we missed each other today but we will probably see each other tomorrow! :)

The indicator-sysmonitor does not give the missing release file.
@ByteCommander Yep, that one works fine and does not give the no release file message.

${vString/@@d/$vTipo} mhmmm does the @ not to be escaped ?

user136984
9:05 PM
@ByteCommander: Do you have any idea by the way when Powerwolf will release a new album as it's been a while since they last released one? :)

user139252
@ParanoidPanda Never, they decided to stop making music because they realized they all wanted to become professional cat wrestlers.

who here knows Arduino/C++?

@AskUbuntuMeta Nuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
@Seth do they do code optimizations?

@Zacharee1 that'd be Code Review.

gah, the +100 scared me again....

gah, I can't type.

9:51 PM
:p

user136984
Oh, I just read that Fabby's leaving... That's sad... :(

user136984
But good he has a new job and I wish him all the best in that. :)

indeed :(

user136984
I hope he can, even if rarely, pop in at least just to say hello.

user136984
It's going to be sad here without him...

user139252
9:58 PM
Wait, he's leaving? I knew he was getting a job, but I thought he was still going to be coming in here

user136984
@TheBrownOne: Look at his Meta post.

@TheBrownOne if he can

user139252
In the meantime, rebuilding the DH parameters for my VPN server

user139252
It'll probably be done by the time Fabby returns :P

user136984
10:03 PM
Oh dear, have you guys heard about the new major "ImageTragick" (in ImageMagick) vulnerability?

@ParanoidPanda go on
(no)

user136984
@Zacharee1: Have a look at this.

user136984
That should explain it in short, and is better than I can do.

@ParanoidPanda can I have an even shorter TL;DR?

user136984
It also links to the CVE and news about it elsewhere.

10:05 PM
just what the vulnerability is and does
(so pretty much everything ;P)

user136984
@Zacharee1: As far as I understand when one uploads an image to a website which processes user uploaded images with the ImageMagick library (most websites do) one can upload a specially crafted image which exploits a vulnerability allow it to execute any code it likes server-side so that the server can become compromised.

ooh sounds fun
:p
Thanks

user136984
They haven't released a patch yet though.

I read up to that part
But there is a workaround, isn't there?

user136984
There is something temporary, but I don't know what it is, I didn't go to the link explaining that.

10:09 PM
neither did I :p
I don't care very much though. I don't think I use CMS

user136984
Yeah, I'm not so worried about my website, nor anything I'm hosting, I'm more worried about all the sites I go to (including SE) getting hacked which could possibly result in a mass data leak or malware being placed on the sites, possibly both.

hooray
But does SE use ImageMagick?

can we agree on that going through unanswered questions is pretty pointless?

@Videonauth yes

user136984
I'm not sure, you'd have to ask, but apparently a "countless" amount of sites use it.

user136984
10:11 PM
Anyway, goodnight! :)

KILL THEM WITH FIRE!!!
(the unanswered questions)

@ParanoidPanda That work around is on this page access.redhat.com/security/vulnerabilities/2296071 Under the Resolve tab

no one link to the Meta Q&A; it was a joke

@Seth Christ...

10:19 PM
hey guys!

'ello

I have been forever stuck at this question askubuntu.com/questions/766258/…
any suggestions?
I also tried to get input from the device and check what it looks like http://codepad.org/t3jpvZNj
But can't figure out the data received

I know nothing about drivers, but I do know that SE does not like cross-posting
Your question was marked offtopic on Unix & Linux because:
> "This question has been posted on multiple sites. Cross-posting is strongly discouraged; see the help center and community FAQ for more information." – cas, cuonglm, Scott, garethTheRed, jimmij
The was stated
@AbhishekBhatia Accordng to my school firewall, that site contains malware

the codepad link?

But VirusTotal sees nothing, so I don't know why
yeah

10:27 PM
@Seth That is just another reason for me to really add to my dislike of that horrible company named ....... Apple. I have a hard time even thinking about all the garbage they have pulled over the years!

indeed. Only good thing they've done in a while is fight the FBI.

beware another vinocs editor is comming :p askubuntu.com/questions/768202/terminal-as-file-editor

@Seth That is the only good thing they have done lately.

@NathanOsman You missed what?

is there any way I can migrate this question to my already posted linux question and transfer the bounty?

10:34 PM
@ fabby he missed you saying goodbye
my guess

:D That's why I posted the meta question!

@Fabby Good luck on your new job! :)

user139252
@Fabby Don't leave!

that ^

user139252
If you do, you need to pay us all severance pay!

10:41 PM
:D

@TheBrownOne Sorry: Haven't installed sound yet...
Was busy on another screen...
@TheBrownOne I've just added you to tox again...

user139252
Yay :D

@Fabby its been fun

@Mateo :)
@Mateo Do you have tox?

you have ways of finding me ;)

10:50 PM
:D

I'm not on tox

I can come over! ;-)
(if ever I'm in the neighbourhood)

He lives!

July 18th I should be in Seattle for a global meeting.

Online at least

10:50 PM
well, to my parents house now, but yeah, they would be able to direct you

@Fabby you can visit @Seth

user139252
You can visit here in California

Hi guys, I had posted a question on ubuntu, and later realised it belonged to linux and posted it there. My doubt is there any way I can migrate this question to my already posted linux question and transfer the bounty?

@Zacharee1 He's in Seattle?

He's in Washington somewhere I think

10:52 PM
@AbhishekBhatia AFAIK, bounty is gone forever...
@AbhishekBhatia but you can refer to the AU bounty question here on AU to the guys on U&L and some might be interested in getting a bit more rep here...
Good night all: I have a plane to catch early in the morning...

@Fabby good night, ill send you a mail the next days from my orginal mail adress just keep an eye out for it

@Fabby Goodnight! And Good Luck!

hi
we're talking about me?

11:09 PM
@Seth and how you're such a tyrannical mod, never giving us a single moment of peace :p

@Zacharee1 oh that. I try ;)

lol
I'm in Windows 10 right now
Only because I have so few programs installed it's actually fast
Well, 2 upvotes on my Code Review question, but no comments or answers

Arduino isn't a huge tag there, give it some time.
Maybe add the C++ tag too?

maybe
But that might get edited out since it's not quite C++
We'll see what happens :p
ooh, I'm almost to 6k here :D
143 rep to go
I wonder how quickly I'll be able to gain rep over the summer. I think I got almost 1k over my 2 week break in March
731, so not quite :p

Hi

11:22 PM
hi
@SQuirel do you know C++?
/Arduino?
@Seth hmm. The C++ tag forces itself to be first. That might not be so good.

why?
Don't think which tag is "first" really matters

Well it may be mostly C++, but it's still Arduino
And whichever tag is first is how the question is labeled
c++ - Title Here
I guess if anyone responds, we'll see :p
Hmm. So the switch function can handle ints and chars, but not strings
So when I get to the point of using all colors on the matrix, I'm going to have to go back to using if
Unless I can somehow use an array
That'd be interesting
I could use an array
Send the input chars to the array, then read them and use digitalWrite() for each one

11:44 PM
Does anyone here have experience with Flask?

Q: Override Flask-Security's /login endpoint

RPi AwesomenessI'm working on a site where the users login via OAuth, not a password-based system. Because of this, Flask-Security's default login page doesn't actually work for my use case, because I need the /login endpoint for the OAuth setup. I was able to make it so that my /login route wasn't being overr...

I'm stuck :P
@Seth I saw that. Frickin retarded.
Yet another reason to not use Apple :P

indeed.
@Zacharee1 eh, otherwise it'd be "beginner - Title here".

I guess
  int gnd [0] = Serial2.read();
  int gnd [1] = Serial2.read();

  for (int i = 0; i <= 16; i++ {
   x = gnd [i from for loop];
   if ((x >= 8) && (x <= 15)) {
     dw(x, HIGH);
   }
   else if ((x >= 0) && (x <=7)) {
     dw(x, LOW);
   }
 }
I wonder if something like that would work
Obviously, I can't just have two Serial.reads in a row. I'd have to make a for loop for 16 cycles
When did the edit limit go down to 2m? @Seth
