What's the loophole?

The loophole is that they have 7 years to collect. After that, they can no longer collect or bother the person.

Q: Rapid flickering lines and blinking screen on 14.04 desktop

lamb_da_calculusStarting yesterday, I've been seeing these rapidly flickering lines on my Ubuntu desktop. Each one is maybe 1-3" long and a random assortment of colors, like a block of a single row of pixels randomly chose new colors. It lasts for a very brief amount of time, <0.1s, but it happens on and off con...

I ignored them for 7 years, because I knew that they would have to take me to court if they wanted their money, but it wasn't worth it to them. They would have lost money on that one.

^ problem mysteriously disappeared

@Terrance noice

12:03 AM
@muru That sounds more like a hardware issue either with the monitor or cable. Not saying that is what it is, but what it sounds like to me as far as flickering goes.

Is there a way to use the find command in Linux to search the whole FS for a filename?

Yep, probably

Anonymous
@Zacharee1 I thought that was the point of find

@Zacharee1 find /mount/point -xdev -name foo?

@muru so find / -xdev -name logo.bin to search from the root?
@onebree I thought so, but I couldn't figure out the syntax

12:05 AM
Yes. -xdev excludes other filesystems

ah
thx

Nice! I just learned something new here too! :D

OK. I can't do it with -xdev because everything on Android is in its own partition

:D

But now it's searching

12:07 AM
Then without the -xdev. You'll probably run into lots of errors on /proc and /sys, though.

That is good to know. =)

@muru we'll see :p
Is there a way to exclude a specific mountpoint, or do I just need to take out my SD card?

You'll have to use the -prune option: Something like find / -name /sdcard/0 -prune -o -name foo

whew

Anonymous
anyone here familiar with postgres setup?

12:10 AM
Unfortunately, I am not.

@muru is there a way to search for multiple filenames at once in the same command?

-o is OR. Add as many as you need: find … \( -name foo -o -name bar \) and there's regex too: -regex '.*foo\|bar'

ah thanks

(don't recall the default regex flavour though)

find / \( -name /storage/21DB-B957/ -prune -o logo.bin -o name logo.rle -o name splash.rle -o name splash.bin\) doesn't work
Wait
duh

12:16 AM
@muru I was just looking at the same GRUB one you were on. Thank you for finding that. I was going to type something up, but you make it easier for me to vote. Thanks! =)

I forgot the -name on one and forgot the - before name on the rest :p
@muru not to self-promote, but I think this might be a better answer to that GRUB question, since it explains that you shouldn't remove GRUB

@Zacharee1 Awwww, I already upvoted that answer awhile ago.

@Terrance that's just bad for both of us, now isn't it? :p

@Zacharee1 LOL, Yep! :D

Those two still haven't responsded to my edits

12:27 AM
Edits on what?

On my answer
They were all about how GRUB isn't needed, one gave me a downvote, and when I corrected my answer, no response

That sucks!
I think that it is fine to say that GRUB is needed because it is a bootloader like any others.

Well I said GRUB is absolutely needed

I also never really did care what the grub screen looked like because it is a screen that you usually don't look at for more than a few seconds.
Good that you fixed that, and yes, I agree that they need to respond to you for that. I get what you meant though when you wrote the answer. =)
I have noticed that some people on the AU site are very critical of answers, but if you tell them that they're wrong, it is like you started WWIII

lol

12:38 AM
humm how can i provide a password to the mysqldump command ?

@Videonauth mysqldump -p password

mhmmmm dowsnt work somehow

@muru +1 for the shruggie

@onebree Have a good night! :)

> This place is sad, full of agents trying to get people to download spyware Ubuntu like linux mint is controlled by us law enforcement and for this reason they dont want people to have access to open vpn technology, but no problem you can have a perfectly working music and video player!
Okay then.

Ooooooookaaaaaaayyy What is that from?

He's still here?

That doesn't even make sense.

12:51 AM
@Seth where is that? I don't see it on the question I thought it was from

deleted now

drat
@Seth you should put it on SE Gems

There's a site for that?

Some Tumblr site

Ah, OK

@Zacharee1 Thank you! :D

finaly :)

Blegh. I really want to change this ugly static splash screen that shows up on boot on my phone, but there are no guides for my phone, the recent guides don't work, and there's apparently a high chance I brick the device.

That's not good.

1:01 AM
ikr
It's just so ugly
"GALAXY NOTE 4 powered by Android"
I want to put something custom in

That does seem boring.
Custom rocks!

1:12 AM
Hi.
@Zacharee1 time to upgrade your phone then,,,

@TheXed and be stuck with a locked bootloader again? no thx

Isn't it fairly easy to unlock your bootloader?

Not on Verizon phones
Thinking about Notes, sorry
Actually, though, my RAZR M had OEM unlock available, which was weird
But not my Note. Someone finally found an exploit to get an unlocked bootloader

@Zacharee1 apparently with the op2 it takes about 9 steps...but I don't think you can use it on Verizon.

@TheXed nope. GSM only

1:16 AM
lol @ disclaimer: Disclaimer: By attempting any of the processes listed in this thread you accept full responsibility for your actions. I will not be held responsible if your device stops working, catches fire, or turns into a hipster and claims to have been modified before it was cool.

@TheXed disclaimers are great

yup...
oh by the way happy birthday to me.

@TheXed happy b-day to you too :p

lol

Anyone remember this guy?

1:22 AM
@Zacharee1 nope

Well now you do

the national networking communication eh?

ja

Sure, I walk away from my desk to feed my dog so I can give her her shot and there are 24 new messages in here. :)

You're welcome

1:28 AM
@Terrance sometimes that happens...
@Terrance of course alternatively you could have let your dog starve...

It has been higher before. :)
I have to give her insulin shots.

@Terrance your dog gets high?
2

LOL

@Terrance oh you mean the message count...

Yep, the message count. :)

1:31 AM
Should I buy a rpi camera module?

@TheXed XD

Then I can aim it at my wife...

LMAO! Those SE Gems are awesome! "What's better, SQL or Emacs for full stack development?"

I won't even plug it in...just aim it at her general direction all the time to creep her out...

@Terrance "hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi"
That's my favorite

1:36 AM
@Zacharee1 LOL! I just barely read that one! :D

Well it is one word.... :p
well bedtime

well good night.

Have a good night!

@Terrance so um....whats up?

@TheXed Just gave my dog her shot. Now I am looking for questions that I might be actually able to answer. :D

1:45 AM
@Terrance cool

I guess it's better than watching a wrestling pay-per-view. LOL

1:57 AM
Yeah by far...

@TheXed Yes, you should get that rpi cam module. That would be awesome!

I am thinking about it.

If you could find a motorized base for it, that would be better. =)
I was thinking that I need to get one of these for my desk at work: amazon.com/Dream-Cheeky-USB-Missile-Launcher/dp/B000XYR2CM

2:17 AM
@Terrance looks fun.

I think it would be cool to rpi that thing with tracking software as a room guard. :D

just needs a motion sensor...whenever it detects motion it can fire away...

Yep! :D

I am absolutely stunned that MTP doesn't support files larger than 4 GB. What is this? 1998?

MTP?

2:20 AM
@NathanOsman we need Nitroshare for Android :P

The protocol that Android uses when you transfer files over USB.

@Terrance might as well just a get a real IP cam then..

@NathanOsman hey which is better Camera Module v1 or v2

@Seth We do, I just need my other jobs to settle down so I have the time to do that.
@TheXed I've only been able to get my hands on v1 so I can't compare them.
However, I've heard good things about v2.

@NathanOsman I see, I have heard there is a focus problem with v2

2:21 AM
@NathanOsman 4GB? Really? I guess I have never tried to transfer anything larger than that yet.

And it's a Sony sensor, so - I would imagine it's pretty good.
@TheXed v1 isn't going to give you any advantage there, trust me :D

@Seth Yeah, I could do that. I just like the thought of autofire on it though. :D

@Terrance I've got a 10 GB video sitting on my phone waiting to come off. I just need to find a way to do it. Sounds like I may have to use netcat.

@NathanOsman Ah, OK

The Pi can do basic motion detection.

2:23 AM
@NathanOsman What are you trying to transfer it to?

I've got an option in the image/video recording app I'm using that captures an image if motion is detected.
@Terrance My PC (laptop).
The upside of MTP is fast transfer speeds (13 MB/s). For some reason, the wireless chip in this laptop won't go above about 4 MB/s.

@NathanOsman Ah, OK. I was just wondering because I was trying larger than 4GB before and it turned out I was transferring to a FAT32 partition, which I am guessing is not your problem on that.

This is an ext4 partition, so no.

Like I thought

2:26 AM
Could you transfer more to that first then go to your computer?

Now that's a thought.
I have a USB OTG cable.

That one plugs directly into the device on the other side.

I just need to think of whether I have a flash drive or something with 10 GB of free space.
I have an 8GB microSD card...
Hmm...

Ah
I'm thinking I am going to buy one of those drives now. :D

microSD cards are super cheap...

2:30 AM
Not the really fast ones.
I managed to get my hands on one with 95 MB/s write speeds.
It definitely speeds up the Pi :)

That's quick. Type 10?

even the type 10 are cheap...

It's beyond 10. I forget what they call it.
U[something]3.
Oh, just U3.
^--- like that one

Yep, I just found those too. U3

UHS...

2:32 AM
Well worth the money if you want it for the Pi.

"The UHS-I category refers a type of interface that has a potential maximum speed of 104MB/sec, but current cards haven’t quite reached that maximum limit . . . yet."
WOW! Nice!!
Well, 125MBps is Gigabit speeds, so that is quick!

Yup.
That is very quick.

@NathanOsman Oh, I was thinking that there could be a 1Gb USB adapter that might work with the Raspberry. However, I haven't found any documentation out there yet that people have tried.
But those only work on the USB 3.0 buses.

I guess I'm stuck using netcat to transfer that large file.
Should take about 100 minutes. ಠ_ಠ

Go watch some Downton Abbey while that transfers. Might be just as exciting! O-o

2:43 AM
Lol.

3:07 AM
"17007 kbps" - wow, no wonder my Pi ran out of space.
I have no idea why the video bitrate is so high.

Good night.

3:33 AM
@NathanOsman Does it speed up your boot time or your all the time running time?

It does speed up boot time a bit. But you really notice it when installing packages.

Edity in Installing Ubuntu 16.04 LTS now
:p

Ah, well that's disk heavy. Have you noticed it when you're not specifically disk image constrained? I'm thinking about netbooting a pi, so the disk-io would choke out there - not the SD card.

Chatting while installing
LEL

@RobotHumans I don't really notice it at other times much.

3:35 AM
@NathanOsman is chatting while installing Ubuntu fun?

But I often use the Pi to build packages which involves a lot of disk I/O.
@Edity You tell me.

Yes.

LOL
yes
is 16.04 good?

It's up-to-date.

i have a pic of a squirel

3:37 AM
It's not the most stable release we've ever seen... :D

:O
lol

And it isn't the best option if you have an AMD card and need OpenCL.

O_O
Shoot
i have a AMD card

You need OpenCL?

graphics
i should say

3:38 AM
@NathanOsman Oh, did the new userspace blob mess up opencl?

The open source driver isn't that bad.

My one is a amd a4 ??? with radeon grahpics

I think it is awesome that Open Source drivers are now appearing for NVIDIA cards. :D

@RobotHumans Well... here's what happened. AMD is abandoning their proprietary driver in favor of the new amdgpu driver.

Edity's Installer:

3:39 AM
But it isn't available for 16.04 yet.

Install (as superuser)

14.04 still works with AMD, and should through 2019.

The open source driver continues to be available and it will meet the needs of most users.

(picture of a ???) teijgrijgiejgirjis

@NathanOsman which package is the OSS one again?

3:40 AM
Good question.

Yeah, I remember you trying to build the amdgpu driver I think, and getting a type mismatch

My sister doesn't want to upgrade to Windows 10 so I see opportunity, but she has AMD graphics.

Isn't it a kernel driver? And therefore part of the kernel modules package?

thats weird because when I booted my screen was all fuzzy and then the desktop appeared

It works out of the box for me.
I've never had to install a package.

3:41 AM
I'm not sure (never had to deal with AMD graphics before) but KDE had quite a bit of tearing.

@Seth Force your sister to, and join the Insider Team

ugh. no.

@Seth Does KWin offer an option to enable v-sync?

(say to her she will get discounts on the microsoft store)

16.04 on my MacBook Pro 2008 model video drivers would not work at all. I couldn't see enough to even install.

3:42 AM
@NathanOsman ooh, good idea. Dunno. Lemme see.

@Seth I didn't get a lot of tearing on the AMD card I had... but I did have temperature panics. I was using a budget performance card (read as powerful, but so cheap they had to have skimped somewhere)

Maybe ask your sister to dual boot Ubuntu instead! Mwehehehehehe @Seth

@Terrance IIRC, the open source drivers didn't support some of the really older AMD cards.
I doubt it works with the Rage II I have sitting around somewhere...
:)

@NathanOsman No, they don't, but sometimes I gotta jump in get my feet wet and try anyway. :D

@NathanOsman The really old and really cheap ones, where you might as well have been running intel onboard.

3:44 AM
@NathanOsman there are vsync options. "automatic" (the default), "never", "when cheap", "full screen", "reuse window elements".
I guess I will play around with that.

although if you have win 10 when it detects your os, it says Windows Boot Manager

@Seth You want v-sync enabled since that prevents tearing.
I wonder which option corresponds to that...

Well, the Macbook I am kind of stuck on since the video card cannot be upgraded. I'll wait to see what the future brings, or just stick to 14.04. :)

Apple is all about making upgrades difficult, unfortunately.
The RAM in my Mini is soldered onto the motherboard.

my hackintosh is running smoothly :D

3:46 AM
Yes, that they are. But, then again, I paid nothing for this thing, nor will I go out of my way to buy one in the future. I don't care for proprietary systems.

I don't either. I walked into the Apple store and bought the cheapest computer they sold with OS X installed on it.

see you later (install is almost complete)

All I needed was something I could use for compiling.

I got mine from an old job that owes me lots of money.

@Edity Bye.

3:47 AM
Well "full screen redraws" didn't fix it, and "reuse window elements" completely broke everything.
it's using MESA drivers..

@Edity Take care! :)

il be back

My son accidentally stepped on my MacBook and broke the glass cover to the screen a while ago, but I need new double sticky tape or the glue stuff to get the new plastic cover to stick to the screen bezel.
Not sure where to get the stuff though.
Are they ever going to make deb.playonlinux.com Xenial ready?

idk
O_O
Guru Meditation be like: Retired Guru at Ubuntu: ummmmm

According to their site, it is still only Trusty.

3:55 AM
too outdated eww
eww trusty
O_O

At least in the normal Xenial repos, PlayOnLinux is newer than on their site. :D

lol
(removed)

:)

Install complete!
see ya!
Edity in: Ubuntu Welcome screen
:)
now time for TRIPLE BOOT: remix os!
but i have one question...
since remix os has grub
and ubuntu has grub
will the grub overwrite the grub?
(if you know what i am talking about)
lets see here
I dropped the silent bomb.
woops

4:43 AM
@Edity yes it will.
unless you choose not to install it. (sometimes that's an option, depending on if the OS you are installing lets you get away with that)

Why, insomnia, why?

@Zacharee1 screens don't help..

Hi guys.. I'm gonna install Lubuntu 16.04 on this ancient netbook. What's gonna perform better, 64 bit or 32 bit? It's just gonna be used for basic web browsing and Libre Office asus.com/Notebooks/Eee_PC_1011PX

if you have <4 gbs of ram then you are probably not going to notice a difference.

There's 1 GB of ram actuallu
actually
1.66 Ghz dual core
Pretty sluggish machine, in general

However, I use 64bit by default anymore, because there really isn't a reason not to.

Yeah, I use 64 bit too, in my main workstation
But this is this ancient thing I'm trying to bring back to life... So are you saying there's not much of a difference whether I go for 64 or 32 bit Lubuntu?
@TheXed

12:03 PM
@Terrance LOL at the popcorn thing.. How about some small firecrackers? That would be fun too. You probably wanna put the inside balloons or something though :)

where can i check if a corn for my main user has been run or not and if there have been errors?

Hi there. It seems like m virtual machine (Ubuntu 15.10) is corrupted somehow. Is there a way to do a data dump of all installed programs, settings, conf files,etc?

Anonymous
(It's corrupted because although the time is set to America/New_York, whether I set it manual/internet in the GUI or CLI, it continues to "reset" back to 4 hours ahead.)

That said I would be cautious about what's in /etc here

1:18 PM
@onebree I would look at your bios and see what your system clock is set too.

Anonymous
@TheXed Your suggestion made me look at my Windows host time... And it was wrong as well.

I blame the recent Windows update, to be honest

1:40 PM
@onebree did you get it fixed then?

Finally got that 10GB file off my phone using netcat.
Took well over an hour.

2:45 PM
@NathanOsman 10GB on your phone o_O

@NathanOsman How speed is your internet?

@RPiAwesomeness it's a 43-minute video from my Pi camera.
The Pi is too far away from the router so I had to first get the file to my phone, then from my phone to my PC.
@HenryWHHack at home? 1 Mbps down and 256 Kbps up.
Yeah. I know :(

@NathanOsman ah

I have a gigabit router though.
So within the network I get good speeds. Or at least, I should.

2:49 PM
@NathanOsman I have a 30 Mbps down and and a 3Mbps up.

That's reasonable.
I could use that :P

Supposedly 25Mbps down, 6 Up
But it's comcrap soooo

$219.99 per month.

Ouch.
I would be paying close to $100 for what you described.

user139252
What is with internet prices where you guys live?

2:52 PM
@Rinzwind would be paying... £10 or something ridiculous.

user139252
60 down, 5 up for $40/month here....

O_o
I should move there.
Prices here are more than double that.

@TheBrownOne That plan is $391.29 here.

Where do you live? O_o
That is even more insane than what we have to pay.

user139252
@HenryWHHack USD?

user139252
2:54 PM
Certainly not USD....

I can squeak 15 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up from my phone but it's capped at 5 GB.
Then they artificially slow it to 256 Kbps.

user139252
Maybe I don't want to move to Canada...

Some aspects are better than others :D

user139252
:P

Ask the average person on the street if cell plans are overpriced here and they'll say the same thing. But you have to know where to look.

2:58 PM
heyo guys, what could be some good topics to have a Ubuntu classroom type thingy going on in Ask Ubuntu?

I've got unlimited calling anywhere in Canada and the US, global SMS, voicemail, and 5 GB of high-speed data for $40/m.
The data is unlimited but they slow it after 5 GB.
