12:15 AM
i would go on ans simply make bash scripts for doing that

12:34 AM
@Seth no, unfortunately, it's just one big app.
I'm thinking of writing a framework in Go though.

hmm.
but is it modularized enough I can strip everything but 1 or 2 modules out?
@NathanOsman --^

12:52 AM
I can't figure out if English isn't their first language or they just don't know how to ask a question: askubuntu.com/questions/776616/security-what-me-worry
or both

or all 3.

o_O
deep man
:P

;P
wait, did Jono stop working on XPRISE already? :/
Apparently he was working at Github until very recently.

@Seth well... it's full of quite a few hacks.
So you could but it's pretty complex.

I just want a bot that can do timezone conversions for me and keep track of who is in what timezone :P
Sounds like something I wouldn't want to use JS for anyway.. lol

12:58 AM
You could write a UserScript.

true.

1:12 AM
fanshy

"be real, be sober". That's a new tagline.

sweet 4 reviews already

@Seth the "be sober" portion should be optional?
@Mateo what is that for?

a twitter webapp

1:20 AM
can I see?

it made sure to link to the new site

Oh wait I can't install it...

for ubuntu phone/tablet ;)

So I have noticed.

@Mateo awesome!

1:22 AM
@Mateo it looks cool...

well, that is mostly the work of twitter, and the webapp container is the work of orga, so I just made sure they worked together ;) opensource is awesome!

I see...
this looks like a good way to brick your phone:

here is the link for the webapp container he made - ograblog.wordpress.com/2015/03/22/… - very cool way to make a webapp for the ubuntu phone

2:29 AM
that's perfect.
Especially considering that Obama is a very authoritarian president.
and that channel is epic.
xD
you gotta see that
they overlaid Drake's face with Obama's xD

2:59 AM
@Seth Authoritarian?

eh, maybe the wrong word. But he gets what he wants.
so I installed a -doc package.. but how do I read the docs now?

3:39 AM
Hello everyone :-)

hi

:-) , I am a bit confused after reading a new Question. he says he can play videos and songs as one user but for another user : missing plugins . Can this really happen ?? !

Apparently

@Seth Oh, dbus. Yes, I used it a bit. - Was @ByteCommander having trouble with something?

@RobotHumans not directly, but there is a possibility of this happening again meta.askubuntu.com/questions/1568/… and app indicators and dbus were two proposed topics. I have no idea if you would be potentially interested in helping with that or not.
But I figured asking couldn't hurt. (still very very early planning stages, it was kinda an accident the topic dropped at all)

3:53 AM
hi

Oh. Indicators and Dbus are certainly good topics, but I wouldn't consider myself "pro" at it to the point of a classroom. If someone came up with a question list, or a how do i X ahead of time, I might be able to chip in on that.

O_O

@RobotHumans Okay!

I have a emergency

I'm kinda in the same boat. I've used both (although probably a bit less than you have) but don't feel adequate for a class..

3:56 AM
I installed ubuntu 16.?? with a AMD graphics
Someone told me it's not a good idea

Well... I mean, if you fumble around with it until it works - you're probably a step farther ahead than the people in attendance... but you could also be teaching bad habits or half truths.

What should i do??

@Edity nope

?

yes, its not a good idea

3:57 AM
well if it works, great.

my graphics fumble sometimes

If it doesn't work, go back to 14.04 or install something lighter on the graphics side like ubuntu MATE or xubuntu.

oh
ok

@RobotHumans my thoughts exactly.

We should launch another Classroom session???

3:57 AM
@Edity AMD is building new drivers, but they haven't come out for 16.04 yet.

ok

Since we have a lot of different languages here from time to time, I thought about half of the regulars would find this funny.
2

whats mate or xubuntu?

@RobotHumans oh that's amazing xD
thanks for the share
and just so you're not like me and mispronounce them for ages they are pronounced: "may-tay" and "zoo-buntu".

what should I use

4:00 AM
whichever you like best.
Google some screenshots.
They are both very customizable though.

ok
(removed)

ubuntu REALLY needs a new api for indicators.

y?

I want to make one with just text but nope..
and can I put it where I want? nope..
@Edity I guess xubuntu kinda looks like a mac.

Ubuntu MATE pun: MATE, get ubuntu!

4:02 AM
except that it's pronounced "may-tay" :P

@Seth You can sort of do both of those, but it involves cheating or adding a category for the indicator to try and get yours sorted closer to where you want it.

@RobotHumans I want mine right next to indicator-datetime :/
How would I manage without an image though?

You turn your text into an image on the fly with pil
So, cheating

MATE pronounce pun: Arr, matey launch the cannons!

@Edity some good videos that describe how they look: youtube.com/watch?v=9hCXwmKg4VU, youtube.com/watch?v=wLNqn2wjGms

4:05 AM
my internet is under maintenance @Seth i'l look at it later so i don't create too much bandwith.

ok

Simple answer, if you like composited effects, you want Xubuntu. If you want it to be tighter on resource consumption and still have a usable GUI that feels a little like older Win/Mac/Gnome2 - you want Mate

@RobotHumans that would work. is pil a library or something?

o

4:06 AM
@Seth I want a Ubuntu Classroom session ;_;
lol

@Edity patience ;)
@RobotHumans I'll check it out!

next session date?:

no date yet.

oh
I like to eat toffee
as a ubuntu flavor XD
remix os?
(hmm works fine --^)

@Seth The answer is yes, it's a python image manipulation library. It would make it so you don't depend on qt or gtk directly, so a better idea when choosing a dependency than using Qt pixmap classes or gtk rendering a font to an image in my opinion. The link to the docs is on their landing page in the link above

4:11 AM
Android x86 :D
if you install it using windows, your'e gonna have a bad time
(removed)

@RobotHumans yeah, avoiding a hard dependency on gtk or qt would be nice.
although I guess gtk does come preinstalled.

(removed)

@Seth on mainline yes, but what if someone wants to use indicators on a qt based distro? you could have a dangling depend on some obscure gtk multimedia package.

@RobotHumans that's true.

O_O

4:15 AM
nothing worse than installing tons of stuff from another stack.

almost seems like a Classroom session

@Edity yes, but in a classroom session, someone would say "but appindicator is a subset of Gtk/depends on Gtk so there" and not accept how split up the dependencies are inside parts of gtk or qt.

o
I got a new washing machine
lol
\

@Seth PIL is an imaging library for Python.
But it has been abandoned and work has resumed with Pillow, which is drop-in compatible.

O_0

4:21 AM
@NathanOsman that. The link I dropped was to pillow

Sorry, I'm just reading through the transcript :P

kubuntu 16.04 ???

Oh.. man I think Ours is the only alive chatroom. I went to U&L gen room to get some help. last message 18 hours ago

@Edity please stop with the repetitive expressions dropping. it's just noise if you do it all the time.

Yeah, this is one of the busier ones.

4:23 AM
ok

@Edity see, everyone is annoyed by those messages. Please refrain.
You have been warned before about this.

ok

Thank you.

I gtg anyways

I am aware its ask ubuntu but I could use some help. I am having a little trouble installing Cent OS 7. Its says : Installation source : Error Setting up base repository. Anybody faced similar problems??

4:25 AM
Don't worry, we welcome questions about pretty much anything :D

^^ This is true.

Unfortunately, I don't know if anyone here uses CentOS.

In chat

My only experience is with Debian/Ubuntu and Arch.

4:26 AM
:( cl-netbox uses, but he is not here...

i still want to get Fedora running

@SeverusTux Nope. I only had problems with CentOS, because I wanted newer packages. Try getting the whole dependency tree for Asterisk latest with all codecs to build on CentOS 5 years ago. You'll contemplate throwing the computer out the window.

!!.,I am trying coz I just wanted to get familiar with non-debain linux.

I'ld start with Fedora if I were going to start with an RPM based distro. It has a lot more polish than CentOS and has more recent packages.

I managed to learn enough about RPM to create packaging for NitroShare but now I've forgotten all of it :D

4:29 AM
@NathanOsman Why didn't you just submit to the opensuse build system?

I don't even know what that is...
(See, I know nothing about Redhat/Fedora/etc.)

it's awesome

How does it work?

^^ it's not for Fedora. It's a build system that basically says "Your linux package now works EVERYWHERE"

4:31 AM
or that's not quite what I was thinking it was.

I'm panicking right now. This is my sec sleepless night in a row. I have preparation for an oral exam Wednesday, something on Tuesday and I can't sleep.

Use one of those white noise generators.
I was surprised by their effectiveness.

I sure the local Giant is open now, at 12:34 :/

Also, do 40 push-ups. That helps.

Exercise makes it worse

4:35 AM
I have the next two days off, and a possible interview for a promotion in the coming weeks. So, I'm stress free.

I just put in my headphones and turn on metal. It helps me sleep *seriously - not a joke*.

O_o
@SmokeDetector I could use that

@Zacharee1 find an app
also, magnesium is necessary for your body to sleep (or something like that). Try a supplement. (won't help now unfortunately)

Another sleep aid that doesn't leave you in a stupor the next day is Melatonin. People that work swings or overnights for extended periods tend to stop producing it. They sell it in a handy bottled form.

I already take melatonin :(

Yeah. It doesn't make me sleepy. Just able to sleep when I can't.

5:21 AM
yay

@RPiAwesomeness want a model A+ Pi? That will be $7,046.55. ---^
(Please tell me that's a typo...)
And the camera is over $200...

I'm convinced that some Amazon items are simply money laundering or bot fishing.

Hmm, that sounds plausible.

1 hour later…
7:02 AM
256MB ram?!?
up it to 1GB ram!
hey @Mitch

@Edity Hello

Q: Any mobile app for Ask Ubuntu?

ipse luteI often find myself trying to Ask Ubuntu for advice or offer help but all i have with me is my smartphone. Is there any mobile app for Ask Ubuntu? Or is it going to be one? With Ubuntu coming to phones and tablets, i believe mobile users deserves fair treatment and help as good as PC people.

JohnI am still at the beginning and just wondering how to uninstall totally WordPress and then reinstall it. i installed first time from this tutorial https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-install-wordpress-on-ubuntu-14-04

10:37 AM

@Videonauth The mods fix the serial upvoting problem or are you getting serial downvoted now?

the system fixed the upvotes

Ah good
WE LOVE YOU MODS! :)

@HenryWHHack that does the SE system automatically

@Videonauth Okay but we still love the mods btw who was the serial voter?

10:42 AM
i will never know

10:52 AM
(removed)

I wont make assumptions, it can have been anyone

@Videonauth those are usually hard to tell
the system is much better than that than we are

yep
but i was directly knowing yesterday that im gonna loose the points all the upvotes happened within a minute

If the guy came to the chats and said "I did it" what will happen to him/her?

Aside from being soundly mocked?

10:58 AM
Yes
go on

maybe pelted with somewhat mouldy fruit?
tarred and feathered?
Disemvoweled?

revoked his rights to carry a towel ?

Subjected to the terrible cruelties of the seraglio?

The next thing I say don't believe it okay.

Then don't say it.

11:00 AM
at least not here

I did it. :D

You should let a mod know

@JourneymanGeek arn't you a mod ?

I said don't believe it okay.

@Videonauth not on AU

11:03 AM
SU

ah o.k. i only see blue :)

I'm a SU mod, though AU mods are fine with me occationally stepping in to help out on chat
I lost an AU election actually ;p

Where do I sign up?

er. Wait for the next election?

yay finaly my crontab worked :)

11:09 AM
The closes I every came to a mod was being a hall monitor at school. :)
In the United States, a hall monitor may be either a student volunteer who is charged with maintaining order in a school's corridors, or an adult paraprofessional staff member who carries out similar duties, sometimes in conjunction with other functions. Students may be selected as hall monitors because they are judged responsible, or they may be appointed by rota. While specific duties vary between establishments, hall monitors typically check hall passes; maintain overall good conduct in the corridors; and ensure that students are punctual in attending classes. Hall monitors may also be posted...
@Videonauth Congrats what ever that is. :)

you should definitively work more in Linux, then you would know that this is an automated process on the machine where you can define jobs to be done at certain times :D
like doing a backup and such things

How did you learn Linux again?

by using it :)

The hard way's good ;p

and reading a lot

11:13 AM
That's what I am doing.

and finally I have grown the most understanding by building my own Linux :)
that gave me the best understanding what goes where and so on

I know more Windows than Linux. :)
:(

I still do too, used windows more than half of my life
untill februrary where i finaly was sick of the nagging screens for updating to win 10
then i dumped it first on my laptop played around there for about 2,5 months with linux and then finaly changed my production machine to linux

I still can't get UBUNTU to work in a vm it does not load correctly. :(

let me guess when you try to install you get a distorted screen ?

11:20 AM
No I got a very slow system.

this you can sort out by 1. installing the guest additions and 2. by updating your 16.04 and 3. by giving it enough resources to run with

(removed)

the other guest systems would have used the guest additions as well if you installed them and most probably would have performed even smoother

Q: Why does modifying /etc/fstab and starting the autofs service corrupt my home directory?

FrankI am running Ubuntu Linux 16.04 on a Lenovo Thinkstation. Yesterday when I modified /etc/fstab and started the autofs service, I lost access to my home directory /home/frank which I valiantly tried to recover. Why did that problem occur and how might I prevent it the future? Any help is greatly...

12:45 PM
@HenryWHHack I can help you get Ubuntu working in a VM... But you should really use Xubuntu or Lubuntu instead -- better for VMs

@onebree Yes you can help
Just tell me where can I get a 32 bit Ubuntu iso? All I can find is a 62 bit.

Anonymous
Ubuntu vanilla?

Anonymous

Anonymous
Use something like qbit to open that link. From there, burn the resultant ISO onto a USB.

I don't have a torrent client but I will get one right now.
a legal one.

Anonymous
12:51 PM
This is legal

Anonymous
Torrenting is usually better -- you are less likely to get an iso with an incorrect checksum. I've found personally that direct downloads didn't work.

Anonymous
@HenryWHHack qbit is legal, to my knowledge qbittorrent.org/index.php

Anonymous

Okay I will use qbit. :)
bittorrent.

gotta start work now. If you need mor help, I'll check back in 3 hours

Okay Thank You. :)

Q: Malware scanner for websites code?

blade19899I have multiple Linux CentOS servers that are scanned with the Google Webmaster Tools and when it finds some malicious code on my servers (shared/dedicated), the ranking of those site drops. What I am looking for is a server scanner that scans .php, .js files and the likes for malware code, so ...

@onebree also faster
@HenryWHHack torrenting linux livecds is not only legal, but encouraged
Also, seeding is a nice thing to do

I am not worry about the torrent.
I was worried about the client.

oh
I use it
its lovely
you can use any other client of your choice tho

bittorrent.

erf. If you must
I'm mad at them for mucking up utorrent on windows

1:48 PM
No bad words are allow. :)
LOL

Actually I did mean muck.

Okay Do mods get more respect than normal users?

But really, there's quite a lot of better clients around these days
@HenryWHHack You have it backwards ;p
Mods typically are users who've earned some degree of respect and are nagged into step up into standing for, and winning an election

I was blocked like 2-3 times and kicked out 5 times.

@JourneymanGeek hehehehe

1:57 PM
@HenryWHHack Well, that's clearly a sign that some adjustments in how you act are needed.

@JourneymanGeek So much that. Some users even enter in to mod elections on the platform - "regretfully, i'll do it if you ask me to... but I'ld rather someone else did it"

@RobotHumans On SU my election platform was "I'm on vacation right now. Yes I'm standing"
or something like that

Like what adjustments?
@Videonauth Thank You! :)

well, look back at what you did when you got kicked
then don't do it.

2:03 PM
for ?

But I did not know what I did.
@Videonauth The Ubuntu VM

ah ok

Your 43 years old.

@HenryWHHack ?

Stuff like that.
What does it even mean?
ahh

2:08 PM
too bad

@jokerdino You called.

The hard part about doing something a little different is that the documentation doesn't exist yet...

@RobotHumans then you can write the documentation as you go along

@JourneymanGeek This is true-ish
The problem with that is that sometimes you wind up with this, and while thoroughly documented - you're not sure what it's supposed to do.

2:31 PM
@RobotHumans 3 words.
Late. Night. Bacon.

2:43 PM
@jokerdino can you please peer review my edit here i tested this guys code over and over and didn't make it work so i rewrote it and proposed it as edit

2:54 PM
i just wonder it i have to re-run certbot-auto or is it hidden somehwere in the system ?

@Videonauth if it doesn't work and the OP insists it does, better to post your own answer then change their "sacred" work, if you know what I mean..

@Seth so roll back then ?

yeah

user139252
@Videonauth I'm not sure, as I haven't used the newer certbot.

user139252
I'm still using the old letsencrypt-auto utility.

user139252
2:59 PM
I'll take a look through the certbot Github Repo to see if it creates a cron job for you or not.
