Q: ECONNREFUSED vsftpd on ubuntu 14.04

user5200287I am running vsftpd on my Ubuntu 14.04 server. I can easily connect to the ftp server when I'm on the same network and connect to it using its local ip. I use to be able to connect to it using my network's external ip from anywhere but just recently that stopped working. I have port 20 and 21 fo...

Anybody has experience with ntpdate?
What's the point of running:
> ntpdate ntp.xs4all.nl
via a cronjob?

@blade19899 stupidity? noobness
and to make it worse: xs4all.nl is one of the worst timeservers in the world and history of mankind
even a sundial placed in the shade is acurate at least 2 times a day :p

@Rinzwind Its executed via cron every 10 min! wtfudge?

10:50 AM
oh come on. That's just sick.
And -bad- If that server is off by 1 hour(and it HAS in the past) you can get seriously screwed)
Use the normal method for NTP and the time (when off) gets adjusted 1 second per 20 minutes or something like that.

@Rinzwind Whats the normal method? (its a CentOS 6.6 server)

oh
one sec
/etc/ntp.conf
add a time server there
sudo service ntp reload <-- ubuntu
servers for redhat/centos:
server 0.rhel.pool.ntp.org
server 1.rhel.pool.ntp.org
server 2.rhel.pool.ntp.org
and
/etc/init.d/ntpd start <-- redhat/centos
to start the deamon

@Rinzwind You are gonna start crying: Those time servers are already added, in the /etc/ntp.conf XD

wtf :D
then why cron?!

I DON'T KNOW

10:55 AM
let me guess: those are added from the default?

I'm gonna starting checking every server we have for BS configuration

LOL LOL LOL
don't forget ALL the users cron >:-D

@Rinzwind Nope. Apparently they had a co-worker, that didn't know what he was doing.

@Rinzwind backup works properly. The script is dirty, but, effective.

@Rinzwind I don't
Also,
they cron job has syntax errors. But, its still working.
Yeez louis.

I once had a cron that did not work.

@Rinzwind I'm doing a system/conf/cron all CHECK. because I don't trust my servers anymore.

@Rinzwind Nope. Just slightly annoyed.

11:15 AM
Hi all! I have a question that's not completely fleshed out yet, so I'm hoping to get some guidance here before going to the main site.
I have 15.10 and I need to compile a C++11 program in such a way that the binary will work on 14.04. But I don't fully understand the compatibility issues involved.

@Szabolcs Which program, library, and what have you tried so far?

Is there any support for this at all in Ubuntu? Can I install older gcc and newer Ubuntu, or is that irrelevant?
@blade19899 It's a bit involved. The program is my own, and it's a "plugin" to Mathematica, i.e. to a closed source application.
If I compile it on 15.10, people using 14.04 tell me it doesn't work. What I am compiling is not a standalone executable, but a shared library (i.e. plugin).
I used ldd to check its dependencies, and here's the result:
The dependencies are as minimal as possible.
It's not clear to me how these will introduce incompatibilities. But many other things aren't clear either, e.g. how the C++ standard library is loaded (since it's not listed among the dependencies). It must be shared with the host application of the plugin, I guess.
As you can see, I'm quite lost and not sure which direction to investigate in. There are so many possible causes of the failure and so many issued involved with compatibility.

@Szabolcs This needs an in depth answer, I don't have the time too do that know. Best bet is to first search Ask Ubuntu for an answer, then ask this on AU.

@Szabolcs A docker container for 14.04 with gcc would be easiest, although you can install multiple versions of gcc and and use environment variables to say "I want to use these specific directories for libs and this version of gcc". Docker container is WAY easier
@blade19899 but do that

@blade19899 I did search, but didn't find a solution yet. The reason I didn't ask on the main site yet is that it's not at all clear to me what affects compatibility, and I'm worried that the question will spiral out of control. I don't even know if the solution is Ubuntu-related or Mathematica-related, so maybe people will say it's off topic.
@hbdgaf That sounds way too complicated ... if I'd have to do that then I'd rather put all the burden of compiling it on the users.

kos
11:50 AM
@Szabolcs The people who tested it had those dependencies installed, right?
Also what was the problem exactly? A linking problem should have been verbose about a missing library. What happens exactly?

12:02 PM
@kos I believe every Linux system should have those installed. It's just libc, libgcc and Linux kernel stuff as far as I can tell.
@kos I just sent off an email asking for more details. Since the shared library is loaded through the graphical interface of Mathematica, they probably didn't see the error messages. Until now I didn't even know that these messages get printed. I asked them to run Mathematica in command line mode, so hopefully the messages will appear in the terminal this time.
You don't happen to have Mathematica by any chance? :)
(Just to test.)

kos
@Szabolcs No, I'm afraid. :( However I'm missing linux-vdso.so.1 on my system, and I'm also failing to find a package which provides it using apt-file... I would expect it to not ship with Ubuntu by default.
Actually I have something, but it goes under a different name:
% find /lib -name 'vdso*.so*'
/lib/modules/4.2.0-16-generic/vdso/vdso32-syscall.so
/lib/modules/4.2.0-16-generic/vdso/vdsox32.so
/lib/modules/4.2.0-16-generic/vdso/vdso32-sysenter.so
/lib/modules/4.2.0-16-generic/vdso/vdso32-int80.so
/lib/modules/4.2.0-16-generic/vdso/vdso64.so
/lib/modules/4.2.0-25-generic/vdso/vdso32-syscall.so
/lib/modules/4.2.0-25-generic/vdso/vdsox32.so
/lib/modules/4.2.0-25-generic/vdso/vdso32-sysenter.so
/lib/modules/4.2.0-25-generic/vdso/vdso32-int80.so
/lib/modules/4.2.0-25-generic/vdso/vdso64.so
This is on Ubuntu 15.10 64-bit.

12:20 PM
@kos It seems that everything depends on linux-vdso.so.1 on my system (try e.g. ldd /bin/gzip), but I cannot find a file with this name. Maybe it's some special kernel stuff. What do you get form ldd on your system? I'm using 15.10 BTW.
I guess in the very worst case I'll just tell people to compile everything manually on their own system. I know that to work. But it's not simple, unfortunately.
But then if they decided to go with Linux, they should expect this sort of inconvenience.

kos
@Szabolcs Oh that's right. ldd is telling me the same:
% ldd /bin/gzip
linux-vdso.so.1 =>  (0x00007fff19fc4000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 (0x00007f1ed9bb2000)
/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x0000559498bb1000)
I guess the best way to grasp this would be looking at the error messages.

Where should we look at to know if a Ubuntu Touch release is EOL? I keep skipping those reviews.

1:09 PM
Oha, did I screw that up? Can anyone please help me with this guy?
Sorry I ended up crashing the office machine. Couldn't reply from there. apt-get -f install removed all dependent packages and computer refused to start. — riteshakya037 1 min ago
He had the package python (should be version 2.7.x) installed as version 3.5 and ended up with loads of dependency errors.
I had him fix a few errors (deleting and reloading package lists, then forcing downgrade of python to 2.7), but now it seems broken...

kos
@ByteCommander Well it was apt-get install -f nuking it, wasn't it? I wouldn't say you screwed up, you didn't even suggest to run it. It's more that apt-get screwed up.

Well, yes. But I still feel somehow responsible. You don't have an idea how to fix that, do you?
Messing around with Python packages is always a risky hassle...

kos
@ByteCommander /var/log/apt/history.log should report the last APT command run and the full list of packages that were removed
Try reinstalling everything...
But honestly I'm not sure if that alone would work.

kos

Apparently it's a problem with NVIDIA
Even on Windows NVIDIA is giving me problems...

@kos Well, I got a response, and they didn't tell me the error message, but surprisingly: if I compile the same thing on 15.10 with gcc 4.8.5 (instead of 5.2) then it does work on 14.04 ... Now I just wish I understood why. Might have to do with this: gcc.gnu.org/wiki/Cxx11AbiCompatibility

Linux Foundation seriously called Plasma Mobile the best Linux based mobile OS? -.-
Ubuntu Touch is so much further along.

it was based on ubuntu touch if i remember

@Seth really? link?

kos
@Mateo Thanks but... not sure how I should read that exactly.

4:39 PM
Hello :)

"At the same time, it’s better if the distro is run by a community instead of a company so that a user remains in the focus and not the company’s financial goals." ... so no bias there then!

kos
@Mateo I mean doesn't that just list SDKs compatibility?

basically, the versions with green - are good for apps using those frameworks
users have image based upgrages/updates - you can allways get to the new version - using an older version meams just the apps will start to dwindle
basically, nothing is in that traditional eol position of must upgrade or loose updates
just newer apps use newer frameworks
anyway, that how i took it

kos
@Mateo Ok I see, so basically it depends on what they're asking about exactly. Did I get it right?
Meaning app X uses framework Y and Y is supported on version Z: ok, Y is not supported on version Z: not ok... correct?

2 hours later…
6:30 PM
googling 'ubuntu fax-pnh-filter' seems like a pretty efficient way to get depressed about your printing perspectives

@kos that is what i got from it
probally more important is being on the "stable" channel - ota9 is still on 15.04 - but it is the stable channel, so still supported on the phones

Using the heavily advertised (not) Windows Reliability History Viewer, I saw that NTDLL was cited as the cause for the crashes
I looked it up and apparently NVIDIA drivers can cause this
