12:03 AM
@Serg go for it. You're not happy at all right now. Plan it out, and try something else.

12:13 AM
well i set myself a few new year goals to achieve

@Zacharee1 i don't know if i should make a change. I'm 75% through program and my mom keeps pushing me to finish. But taking every class and failing is very depressing and painful

depression overrides parental vicarity
(not a word, but meh)

alright, I'm a bit ashamed it took me lots of trial-error to figure this out, but I can't simply change the endianness of my constants and expect the arithmetics of the algorithm to work. The processor will be working little endian with big endian numbers. So after all, I need to get the blocks of the message I'll work with, convert them to little endian, and then convert the result back to big endian
which was what worked at the first time, at least I'm starting to understand what's going on

I read it as " Except you, you bastard" at first lol

12:27 AM
@Zanna holycowisthatsomeweirdtypeofblocktext

@Zanna I wish I could gift you my close votes
I don't think I can do any tonight

lord of close votes not using close votes
what is happening

sinus

i only hear excuses

@Seth ban pls ^
huehuehue

12:35 AM
:(
does AU have a discord/slack?

that would be cool
let's make one :D

i want to swear without being banned

lol
you can swear here
just not excessively

swear about people not using close votes? I tend to want to swear about people using them..

really? i am sure there will be someone who would flag me

12:36 AM
I don't see James Tobin here

good

nonetheless, there are things that are NSFAU
wow i am a mod for once in mah lyfe

@edwinksl ive slack but its mostly for classes and stuff. if you want to joing for lolz i can give you a link

@Serg come to discord

12:47 AM
@Seth same here. Some users wanna close everything and anything and im like this is not ther purpose of the close button yo

@Serg yeah come to discord :p

1:14 AM
@edwinksl I already came . . . .twss

1:25 AM
nice, welcome

1 hour later…
2:39 AM
@Fabby hello,

Not Fabby, but hello

@Serg hey...
whats going on?

Nothing. Was procrastinating by searching AU questions to tackle
Came out for a smoke.

2:58 AM
Damn...now I have to do math

what for ?

w00t!!

@Serg to learn python the hard way :-P

@TheXed get a different book IMO

indeed i suggest dive into python instead
LPTHW has a bad rep

3:06 AM
It is free...and why are you all afraid of a little bit of math?

LPTHW is alright, IMHO. Starts out a bit slow, then it picks up

DIP is free
why do you think we are afraid of math?

Because I said I have to do some math and everyone freaked out.

?
that is not what happened

Oh right, you freaked about using LPTHW...

3:11 AM
@Seth i've got three.

@ThomasWard what is it?

ugh . . . why does our prof require typing out the questions in addition to answer ?

@muru YubiKey U2F key

for 2FA?

@Serg because your professor came from /dev/evil
@muru For 2FA on U2F-capable sites and platforms, yes.
Google and others have U2F capacity

3:14 AM
@ThomasWard he's generally a nice guy, by far better than others i have this semester

@Serg because knowing what you are answering is just as important as knowing what the answer is...

Hmm, that's true to some extend

That is like a high school math student asking "why am I learning how to do math?, I will never use it"...then in 20 years they can't keep up with their bills because they don't know how to keep a budget...
But I digress...

@TheXed I think there's no healthy middle in education right now. The way "outside" world works is that it's all about problem solving. High school math doesn't give us the context. Like, whenever I am faced with a question or indicator to write on AU, I go "OK, which APIs do I need ? Which functions do I need and how do I need to use them ?" High school math just gives you a lot of hypothetical problems.
That'd be completely different story if kids were taught "OK, guys, you will need to calculate budged" or "You will be designing a backyard deck. Lets figure out which tools and skills and formulas we will need and how to apply them"

@Serg yes I would agree it lacks context, that proves my point...we go through the motions but we don't know why...

3:22 AM
@Serg I had a book like that in one grade.
It was very helpful.

See ? My point exactly

Don't get me started on standardized testing...
in fact if you ever get bored...watch this:

3:41 AM
Question . . .is there any other examples where network packets might need prioritization other than VoIP and maybe gaming traffic ?

in theory, streaming video
@Seth I have the github one
not used it yet tho

@ThomasWard showoff :P

@Seth I've got five other YubiKeys too
if you want me to show off some more :P

@ThomasWard I really wanted a 4, but even $20 is pushing my "gadgets" budget right now :/

oh, and five encrypted thumb drives, and twelve other ones too.

3:45 AM
@Seth they have some kind of sale going on no?

@JourneymanGeek black friday was buy 1 get 1, now it's 22% off 2

ahh right

Would there be any reason to ever prioritize UDP traffic ?

@Seth kinda odd. I was complaining about how u2f support was pretty terrible/flying car style "almost there"

@JourneymanGeek eh, it's still a long way away.
More people need to support U2F

3:55 AM
@Seth streaming...
music/videos

@TheXed you keep pinging me and not @Serg :P

ugh...
one of you needs to change your handle

you just need to learn to press tab twice :p

@Serg that is to much work...

@Seth I just need Google on ff mainly.

4:09 AM
@seth Well, to be fair, our 3rd letters are close, so typos are imminent

so galaxy s8 has no headphone jack? wtf?

@edwinksl it only works with the new apple wireiess ear pods

lol

Migrated North American Rick Astley Hotline to serverless infrastructure. Feel like calling +1-760-706-7425 and seeing if you can break it?
Hahahahahahaha
For those of you not in the US:
Rick Astley hotlines are now running serverless. Enjoy! AU: +61-3-8652-1453 NZ: +64-9-886-0-LOL NA: +1-760-706-RICK UK: +44-11-REAL-RICK

What is this hotline?

for what reason?

too broad or unclear

Got it.

maybe even off-topic

Lookz liek snowz picking up intenzity
Brrrrr

4:31 AM
@Serg stay by the fireplace...

@TheXed uh . . . i see no fireplace on the train . . .and i don't think people will be happy if i start fire

@Serg...I would laugh...

hmmm, that's be an interesting picture
so . . . . it's that time of the year to wonder WTF did happen with my classes

yup

admittedly it was a mess from the start

4:37 AM
time for bedies

@TheXed good night, don't let the wife bite

Q: Add comments with a file

phakmanI'm really gratefully with the post How to install Oracle 11gR2 on Ubuntu 14.04? I would like to make a contribution, but not sure how to attach a file into a post, I wrote to simples scripts in order to get oracle installed into our Ubuntu. How do I do it?

8:45 AM
Which logs does journalctl parse?

8:57 AM
@blade19899 hmmm from strace I think it's looking in /run/log/journal where there are some binary files...

@Zanna Yeah, that's right.
I just need to know which of the logs it displays when running "journalctl".
/var/log/messages,/var/log/secure??
etc
Want to be sure I doesn't skip any

so the journalctl output is all the human-readableness you're going to get out of it - I don't think it is displaying something available in another log
it looks for /var/log/journal but for me no such file or directory
no other mention of /var in the strace

9:57 AM
@blade19899
       · Kernel log messages, via kmsg

       · Simple system log messages, via the libc
           syslog(3) call

       · Structured system log messages via the
           native Journal API, see sd_journal_print(4)

       · Standard output and standard error of
           system services

       · Audit records, via the audit subsystem
That's from man systemd-journald.service

10:31 AM
Guys, horrible noob question, but I use it too little to remember, where did we post code snippets for temporary use only? I'd like to share something with someone here. without messing with the answer too much.

@JacobVlijm paste.ubuntu.com ?
that's what I do anyway

@Zanna, you're the best!
That's it :)

@JacobVlijm lol <3 :D
there are like 200 snippets from me on there somwhere...

@Zanna I believe they are removed over time.

yeah I think/hope so haha

10:35 AM
Haha, me too

1 hour later…
11:43 AM
@cl-netbox check your hangouts :)

♦ thanks for the comment , actually nothing happened when i used the first command line , I am using mac terminal, i assume that it is the same, right ? — Learner Algorithm 6 mins ago
Sigh.

yeah saw that :/
I should have known from their other question I guess

@terdon soooo want to troll that guy
actually...
@terdon OS X ought to be looking at magic numbers and such, same as linux

Sure, and I don't think I'm using any GNU awk features there, BSD awk should work just as well. The OP is almost certainly giving us bad information. My guess is that their key file has a totally different format. Or maybe BSD awk doesn't squish the field separators so $1 is a blank space or something.
@LearnerAlgorithm As I said in my first comment, the awk version on OSX is different. The default on Linux systems is GNU awk and the one on OSX is BSD awk. In any case, if it's not printing anything, your key file is not called keys.txt, or it doesn't have the format you show in your question or something like that. However, and I hope for the last time, I can't help you because OSX is off topic here and I just don't know enough about it. Please go to one of the other sites I mentioned where you will be able to get the help you need. — terdon ♦ 1 min ago

hello all :)

12:12 PM
I upvoted your answer because I made the files, got distracted, went to do yoga, came back, saw your answer... works perfectly...

Hey guys, i need to build some app and in the README :
export CROSS_COMPILE=arm-unknown-linux-gnueabi- // change based on your cross compiler
$ make
how can i get please the CROSS_COMPILE ?

1:58 PM
hello

hey @TheXed

whats going on?

nothing much, about to go to work, seems like today is going to be a busy day

I see, where do you work?

at the docks

2:02 PM
or what do you do I mean

I work in the mooring crew, the dudes that need to moore the ships that come in or release the ones that need to go out

I see, this afternoon I am installing a VoIP system, that should be interesting...

cool!
I'm doing some review on my sha256 hashing library once I get back from work, seems functional but I need to do a full check on the functions and add some stuff
man, I'm about to visit a place tomorrow, doing some research to see if I find anything good and cheap to finance

sounds entertaining...
what kind of place?

so far all sounded great, place looks good on the pictures, price is a little bit saltier than what I was aiming but affordable, then my mom asks her friends cousin that used to work selling places around here
and she says the building is not valuable, that it looks disgusting inside
just a small flat, like, kitnet (is that how you call it too?)
I'm wondering if that's not a bit of an overreaction of that woman, maybe she has the standard a bit too high?
I guess I'll know tomorrow
well, time to get ready for work. Have fun today installing that VoIP system @TheXed!
see you later

2:17 PM
alright don't have to much fun

2:30 PM
@JacobVlijm :D thanks... I noticed sometimes I VTC and nothing happens because the reason for the CV is in the answer and people don't click the link

Q: Allowed image size in posts

GeorgeI have been looking at the images posted and noticed that some are quite large and these (correct me if I am wrong) are added with descriptions of the image and not embedded in the page. Is there an acceptable image size for posts or any size is ok and is handled by the system ?

5:31 PM
This is creepy. https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/these-toys-are-recording-your-children-and-sending-what-they-say-to-a-defense-contractor https://t.co/UVEcaAk9G5
WTH!?!

5:44 PM
@Seth I have read that message already 3 days ago
quite scary isn't it?

hi

6:04 PM

lulz

@Videonauth yeah, although I'm surprised at the lack of evidence they show

user136984
@Videonauth: Oh dear... I can read that! :D

@Seth wel if youre interested i could cram up the german article about it

sure
I can get chrome to translate it

@Seth I found at least one relatively respectable new outlet repeating it, for what that's worth.

6:32 PM
\o
@Zanna gratz!

6:43 PM
@Videonauth @terdon wow that's just so terrible.

Indeed it is and heise.de is in fact one of germans most respected newspaper about computing, they ship multiple major computing magazines gere in germany

Does anyone have a clue what this guy is trying to say in his last comment on his own "answer"? Life is to short to try and explain :) askubuntu.com/a/857952/72216

6:59 PM
@JacobVlijm well i have re read all of him and wasnt able to make a conclusion, time for me to head on with my defcon talk wich is certainly more informative :p

@Videonauth no doubt!
...Not sure what his problem is. Probably dying to call something a bug or something.

7:23 PM
@Rinzwind :D thanks!
@Videonauth hahaha no words

:D but what does it say about me that i can read it as well :p

If u can read this u really need to get ???
Excuse me, what is the last ward from the image above ?

l.a.i.d.

@Serg Not sure if you are around, but I think we shouldn't reply here anymore: askubuntu.com/a/857927/72216. The guy is looking for a conflict. Any. :) Trying to make us quarrel now :)

laid what is meaning

7:33 PM
@Benny the phrase to look up is "to get laid"

lol
now i see

@Zanna thanks i wasnt sure how to phrase it :D

@Videonauth hahaha

I mean i can phrase it but i wasn't sure if this not would bring me a ban in here lol

there is admin here?

7:35 PM
I see at least 2 mods in the userlist :)

i would say in 88.9 % of all times there is an admin on the page itself and as well in chat
@Serg youtube.com/watch?v=MMB1CkZi6t4 wonderful talk

8:11 PM
@Videonauth Friday nights are the one exception :D

Well you could have supported me hehehe im more or the less on my machine all the time :D

What makes you think I didn't? :P

Because it would conflict with the rule that someone you adore in comments from start on gets elected :p
kidding

8:47 PM
@Videonauth not on weekends :)

@Videonauth Thank you for sharing this video !

@Benny you mean the defcon one?

yes

check my channel i posted there two videos lately for someone else aubout ddos

i am more interesting in android but is the same idea ..

8:53 PM
or simply use defcon as a search term on youtube they record every talk
well android devices are nothing else as small computers with a linux base OS and on top running java engine
to many vulnerabilities and so on apply there as well as when you use a pc
what i would love to try out is making a pyphone
meaning taking a base linux os with firmware for gsm modem etc and build a python frontend on top of it

9:19 PM
@JacobVlijm I don't really want to have to enter the time so that awk way is not my ideal solution... please don't be put off if you were working on it...

@Zanna ok, but python is definitely more verbose :)

Im gladly have a look at your script too jacob, I'm actually fiddling with making an automated server install via python including apache setup etc interactive so time functions examples are welcome here too

@JacobVlijm hey, I enjoy a little golf, but I am not one to make fun of some extra lines. And I love how python is readable; it's worth having longer code that actually means something to you two days later :)

Haha, great, I will finish it, might be 15 minutes, have to call someone :)

no rush here, I'll probably leave it overnight to see what it collects and accept something tomorrow anyway :) thanks a lot for taking a look :D

9:33 PM
@Zanna, there is an little issue with Nick's answer I believe. I guess you don't want the number of days as a float, then simply dividing by 86400 will not work, rounding gives an incorrect output if you are near 24 hrs.
@Zanna posted, but will expand a bit.

@JacobVlijm yes I want the answer in days and it gives me it to 4 decimal places - seems to be accurate, but I'd rather have an integer :)
for example...
$ awk '{print (mktime($0) - systime())/86400}'
2017 01 08 00 00 00
31.0993

@Zanna which is not necessarily the same as 30 days difference in date
.. if I am on 23:59, the difference in date will be 32 days.

time handling in programms / scripts has been always a PITA from the start of computing till today, because there is so much involved

@JacobVlijm tested and upvoted - thank you so much for the clear explanation
@JacobVlijm yes, your script gives me 32 days, as does the alias I currently use (which will break when we run out of year) to tell me how long until that day alias howlong?='echo "$((366-$(date +%j)+8)) days to go"'

9:44 PM
@Videonauth and folks have been struggling with it since people first started counting stuff I guess! so complicated

yes, the video explains it a bit

taking a look now
haha that guy has a familiar accent :)

zanna asking a question on AU???

@edwinksl haha for once I thought of something to ask :D
@Videonauth haha this is amusing

i thought you knew it all! turns out you knew almost everything but not quite all of it

9:49 PM
@Zanna yes, still a real problem

@edwinksl hahaha I know less than all the folks in this conversation by a long way!

i am looking forward to a ruby answer

@Anwar ^

10:17 PM
@JacobVlijm but have the tick anyways, I love it :)

WOW, thanks :) will post the zenity now :)

Well i know about alot of stuff, but im no way mastering a single one of the themes

zanna@monster:~/playground$ cp timescript ~/Dropbox/python
zanna@monster:~/playground$ echo "alias days?='python3 ~/Dropbox/python/timescript'" >> ~/.bashrc
zanna@monster:~/playground$ . ~/.bashrc
zanna@monster:~/playground$ days?
Please enter the future date (yyyy-mm-dd): 2017-01-08
32
ahh happy days :)
@JacobVlijm thank YOU :)

Probably because there are like 5 other T-Mobile phones connected to the tower though :p
@Videonauth yay....
that certainly isn't going to help them out :/
@Seth OP3T giveaway on XDA!

11:04 PM
should this directory contain executable files? askubuntu.com/review/first-posts/651324 (chmod why is your -R flag so tempting?)

I know that Android usually makes the folder executable and the files inside only RW, but idk if that transfers to full Linux
@Zanna well it's great for working around permissions

@Zanna mhmmmmm on webservers the file permissions are normally something 644 and the directories 755 but thats only because you need to have everyone being able to read files and so on, but inside tomcat directory mhmm no i would say only the legitimate user should be able to execute
which is in most cases root or an extra user for tomcat

I use it on my MC server files because it's a lot easier than figuring out how to give my SFTP session write access

@Zacharee1 if you want i can talk you trough that tomorrow have to at least rest now have some appointments tomorrow morning

Nah, idc
