russell peters in 2016 lul

good night

well everyone knows what they say about big feet...

they use big shoes?

@TheXed where did that come from?

12:15 AM
it's that time of the year when people are willing to pay me for writing their C code lol

@IanC huehuehue
@IanC you pronounce H's in Portuguese right?

it depends, on huehue we do, even though it's not really a word haha

oh, for all 0 of you wondering, you use an apotrophe for pluralizing letters, but not numbers

@Zacharee1 I grow fur after the first snow fall...

it's like a "R" in this case

12:16 AM
@IanC like "hola"
@IanC wut

we say Olá actually, and in most cases the "h" is mute

so usually isn't pronounced

like "hábito" (habit), we say it like it doesn't have any "h"

Sad part is that i know how the guy feels. I'd be willing to pay for someone to do my control systems stuff and ADC stuff but . . .damn ethics won't allow me

@IanC so you just don't really have an H sound then?
@Serg stupid morals :p

12:17 AM
@Serg ethics and morals get in the way of a lot of things...

@Zacharee1 I'm trying to think of a word with 'h' that has a sound besides the laughing, but I can't think of any right now :p

weird

in doubt, it's probably mute

and J's are the same as in English right?
or at least comparable

that is why you have to be Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton...the two people on Earth where ethics and morals don't matter and there are no penalties...other then burning in Hell when that time comes of course...

12:18 AM
@Serg just make that money with C code, if it's something I can help I accept paypal donations :D

@IanC Trump would tax evade his way out, and Clinton would delete her records there :p

@Zacharee1 J has a sound, but a little different from english

haha, i want to make money. I just don't want to get in trouble with professor , you know

@IanC is it like zh?
or soft G?

yeah
like a soft G

12:19 AM
I'm just hoping she'll recommend more students to me that i can tutor

OK

between vowels

oh great
@Serg reccomend to her that she recommend to you some of the students :p

like 'general' (but a little less 'dge')

I can hear it

12:20 AM
also, I've exam tonight, too, so I've no time or patience. Or nerve for other things

@IanC oh, what about a G followed by E or I? In Spanish that makes the Spanish J sound. In Portuguese, does it make the Portuguese J sound?

@IanC by the way VoIP system install went well and is pretty awesome.

@TheXed cool, so you did end up having fun installing it! :)

Kolodyazhnyy @Serg did I do it?

@Zacharee1 yes, you did it

12:22 AM
woot

@IanC I don't know if fun is the right word to describe it, but it was mildly entertaining...and went well..

peeps, join AU Discord chat discord.gg/Nu9eT2q
2

@Zacharee1 I think 'J' in spanish has more of an "r" sound, "g" always sound soft in portuguese, unless it's followed by "u"

12 letters of awesomeness and confusion

@IanC R sound??

12:22 AM
like Juan

Huan

yeah

Where does the R come in?

so, hehe, who wants to take my analog and digital communication exam for me ?

H in english sounds like R in portuguese haha

12:23 AM
@Serg Slavik FTW
@IanC o_O

like, we could write "ruan" (and though it would look stupid it would sound right)

dafuq

yep, I'm Slavic AF
not really

lol
I just Germanized Slavic, didn't I...

we do pronounce Juan like spanish because it's a name, but other words like Jiboia will not have that spanish "hiboia" sound
it will be like "dgiboia"

12:24 AM
Oh, but I did learn about another language group when I was looking up Slavic, Romanian and Hungarian. Uric
@IanC but Rello would be Hello Portuguese pronunciation??

"Relou" would represent the sound of "Hello"

Christ
y tho
is that for all R's?

which is kind of a slang for "touched" haha

There's plenty of Slavic languages. Just keep in mind there's two major ones. Western and Eastern. Western are those that use latin letters

ele relou na porta (he touched the door - very informal)
@Zacharee1 yeah, it's kind of hard to describe pronunciation, "R" only sounds different when it's between two vowels

12:28 AM
@Serg Romanian actually has a region that uses Cyrillic. I know it's technically a Romance language, but it looks and sounds Slavic
@IanC oy vey
na?
not a?

why do i even bother showing up for the exam . . . I'm failing anyway.

@Zacharee1 what do you mean?

@IanC na porta, not a porta? Is it like a la puerta?

guys. ANGLAIS SIL VOUS PLAIT!
;p

@Aibobot non

12:30 AM
a porta - la puerta / na porta - en la puerta

@JourneymanGeek you speak French?

@Aibobot where is your master at

@IanC en? so prepositions don't translate even from Spanish to Portuguese??

@Zacharee1 I understand basic french when its spoken by non natives

@JourneymanGeek lol

12:31 AM
Apparently at best, my french sounded like a toddler

ooh new pupper
@JourneymanGeek Did you talk to a French person or a Canadian?

also, aibo was logged in already, I was firing up my desktop in the meanwhile
french french

well that explains it :p

@Zacharee1 it's because in portuguese prepositions contract to form another one, like "na" is "em + a". You can't use the latter like in spanish

@IanC In Spanish, if you even used the preposition, it would be "el toca a la puerta." In Portuguese it's "ele relou em a porta"?

12:34 AM
@Aibobot ping ping ping

@Zacharee1 "ele tocou na porta", "em a" doesn't exist, it contracts to form "na"

@IanC I was expanding it to show the difference in presposition :p

there are cases where you use "a" as a preposition too
like "he knocked the door" could be translated to "ele bateu à porta" (à = preposition 'a' + article 'a')

@Zacharee1 well, she thought it was adorable.

1:04 AM
lol

1:18 AM
Brrrr it's cold outside... minus 20... Trump hasn't even taken office yet and he's put an end to Global Warming... who knew???

well, global warming can make winters colder, as ironic as it sounds..

I wonder how many dupes Ask Different has
because there could be some real irony there

@Zacharee1 make that one comment
instead of two separate lines

I wonder how many dupes Ask Different has, because there could be some real irony there

(too late to edit)

There we go

1:28 AM
eyy

sigh, why am i here and why am i trying to prepare for something i am about to fail anyway ?

@IanC Yes I know they changed the term from "Global Warming" to "Climate Change".

@Zacharee1 Oh cool. MKBHD is giving away 100 as well.

who?

Sorry for delay I was doing 20 close votes because I saw Zach when I came into the room :D

1:33 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I've been out of the game for a while

Don't tell me you don't know who MKBHD is...

sick, no sleep
@Seth I have a feeling I do
oh, yep
subbed, then unsubbed

@Zacharee1 I took a few days off from review queue as I was recuperating from xmas party :D

It's the 7th...

Nope it was the 2nd...
AFK...laundry

1:35 AM
but that's closer to American Thanksgiving than Christmas!

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I was just reading this Scientific American article, and it kind of lays out the difference between weather and climate. Climate is a more long-term average while weather can be a anomaly in a moment. So yeah, Global Warming is actually a climate change
it kind of frightens me to see the new USA president stating the global warming is some kind of Chinese conspiracy
not like USA actually gave much shit about the environment before
I think they were starting something on Obama's government, but now that Trump won..

1:51 AM
Trump could make a good case blaming the Chinese for air pollution with lots of emperical evidence.... That would be a good line of attack me thinks. @IanC
It's hard to argue Ice Ages, volcanoes and meteors because they are rare events, but it's easy to argue air pollution and water pollution. If say Trump attacked them with some sort of import tax because of damage done, it would be good for China too (they breathe it and drink it first hand) and to me that's a win-win situation. Even Xiang Ji Ping (sp?) would secretly be happy.
If we waged war against air pollution, water pollution and over harvesting of fish, etc. it would be better than waging war in middle east with millions in collateral damage. IMO.
@Zacharee1 Canadian Thanksgiving was October 20ish something. Christmas parties are cheaper the farther away from Dec 25th which kind of spells out my company's budget...LOL

I'm not sure that's Trumps plan, but it would definitely be a better scenario than him fighting so he can have the "right" to pollute too @WinEunuuchs2Unix

@WinEunuuchs2Unix except that China is actually adopting a clean policy :p

@IanC You saw the protests over North Dakota pipelines recently so you and I both know Americans won't swallow pollution on their own turf, although they do accept it worldwide today.

how about we just don't wage war?

@Zacharee1 I know... I urged China to adopt air and water quality guidelines... but I'd like to see Trump push them on it and hold them to American standards... using tarrifs as a stick.

2:01 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I'm fairly certain many of thos same people are working to remedy climate change in other areas too, but even the ones who are doing this because it finally got to them, well, now they have a wake-up call

I agree there should not be war @Zacharee1 :(
I say let's talk air pollution and water pollution that you can see and taste and forget about carbon capture and storage for awhile.... along with cow farts.
KISS
Also there was Japan's Fukushima Reactor meltdown nuclear radiation leaking into the ocean but it was totally ignored by the global community as something that should be fixed.
The whole world (ie UN or UN Security Council) did nothing because Japan has fiat currency blessed system and Japan's Electric company was a blessed corporation so they were green-lighted to screw up all along the way with not so much as a peep by the UNSC.

I'm in too much of nihilistic day to talk about politics and climate change

Nuclear experts from around the world should have invaded Japan and fixed the problem even if Telco kept saying they were a corporation backed by fiat currency and therefore had it all under control with unquestionable rights.
@IanC I'm just saying to forget about climate change and focus on air pollution and water pollution instead.

that's sort of what's collaborating to climate change isn't it?
(I mean the air pollution part)

Nope... climate change is about carbon capture and storage, carbon tax credits, etc.... they don't talk about air pollution or water pollution which they should focus on in my opinion.
Let's invade China, Pakistan, India, Africa and give them a billion mufflers / catalytic converters!!!!

2:09 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix clearly you hate the amby. You monster.

Better yet install mufflers on that Police Helicopter and TV traffic helicopter circling over my head all day long.

Also cars in india these days are actually getting better. The problem is sheer numbers and such
installs mufflers on @WinEunuuchs2Unix

@JourneymanGeek I've never been to India...just speculating they have air pollution.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix cities have pollution

@JourneymanGeek I'm not saying to depopulate the cities.

2:11 AM
Delhi for example, suffers from an excess of smog, and that's just the politicans burning stacks of demonetised 500 rupee notes

@JourneymanGeek I don't know enough about India's and Zimbawee's currency exchange manouvers this last week to intelligently comment. I've been Ubuntu-busy.
Maybe next year... I go in swings from one interest area to another... ie last year it was crashing the oil price.... last four months was Ubuntu with a little Clinton killing and Trump promoting thrown in for good measure.

2:24 AM
Anyway, I'm optimistic for the future of the world with the internet's ability to bring out the truth to challenge politics and media which in turn controls the war machine, economy, how we treat each other (call that religion if you will) and changing direction on a dime :)
AFK

going for some rest
good night! See yall later

gosh i love getting low grades in my classes. fscking yay

3:20 AM
wb Serg.... I have a question for you
@Serg How do I call dbus?: askubuntu.com/questions/858236/…

@WinEunuuchs2Unix call it "Johnny".
joking. I'll look at it when I'm home, ok?

Oh sorry... forgot about your late night transit escapades :)
do you take train or bus or both? @Serg
Evening @NathanOsman we are minus 20 right now! Brrrr

train, then drive home 20 mins

Wow... we call that park and ride or something like that... I take Bus Bus Bus to work and then Bus Bus Bus home or sometimes Bus Bus Bus Bus to save 10 minutes if I catch the second bus.... it's complicated :)

3:45 AM
Oh not a big deal even if it's minus 21... only 50 minutes by 3 buses to get to work and the same to get home, or 40 minutes if I catch the elusive second bus #125 and take 4 instead of 3 buses. For the most part bus service is wonderful. As is the train service.
A little awkward when the city has a campaign to unlawfully interrogate people who look like me because they might have an unpaid fine.... but that's a different story.
Sometimes knowing the law against unlawful detention, search and seizure is a curse. Civil rights are only for white people I think...

yep. park n ride

they used to have these cute signs "Kissing Zone" where one spouse in a car would drop the other off to catch the train.

4:15 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I walked home in -3° C.
So not quite as cold but still chilly.
The forecast for the next 10 days is snow.
This is the polar (pun intended) opposite of last year.

it's like -15 C here
my feet are so damn cold

4:50 AM
@NathanOsman Have you heard abut limetext.org?
Written in go to "clone" sublimetext
oh and the GUI is written in QML

Whoa.

@Zanna could be useful for your steam answers reddit.com/r/linuxmasterrace/comments/5h51gy/…

@edwinksl oooh neat :) thanks

@Zanna same thing but in r/linux instead and with more comments reddit.com/r/linux/comments/5h52tl/…

more stuff I need to learn - I have such a huge pile of that lately!

better get started then :)

:)

7:20 AM
Hi all
:)

hiya

Hi i am facing this problem now
0
Q: nautilus is crashing on ubuntu 16.10

arunwebberI have upgraded ubuntu from 16.04 to 16.10 which is initially broken then i rewrote entire disk with the new 16.10 using a live boot stick. Then i have installed my old back ups which is in .tgz format back which is discribed in at this link http://serverfault.com/questions/603829/how-to-re...

And how are you?
@Zanna
If i fix this i will get one more chance to crash my system once again
:)

hmm maybe you need to wipe some config files there :S
@arunwebber have you tried logging in as a different user?

No
@Zanna
let me try
If i try as a different user i am getting this nautilus
No protocol specified
Failed to connect to Mir: Failed to connect to server socket: No such file or directory
Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused

(nautilus:4985): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0
Using terminal i just gone to another user with the command su <user>

yeah that is normal, you need an x session for the other user

7:35 AM
@Zanna Like this su -x <user>
its not working how can i do that?

hmm idk if your command works, you can use sudo xhost si:localuser:username or dm-tool switch-to-user username
ok you definitely don't want to use xhost for that, use dm-tool or just log out haha

@Zanna same think is happening for the new user as well first time it just popped up and died
And the log is like (nautilus:5707): Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to register client: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service files

(nautilus:5707): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: Two different plugins tried to register 'NautilusUserShare'.

(nautilus:5707): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_type_add_interface_dynamic: assertion 'G_TYPE_IS_INSTANTIATABLE (instance_type)' failed

(nautilus:5707): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: Two different plugins tried to register 'EvPropertiesPlugin'.

ah ok, I guess it is probably not a local config then
did you try reinstalling nautilus?

yes i purged
completly then installed

no idea then. I use MATE and it doesn't have nautilus, so abdicating all responsibility from this point :(

7:46 AM
Well
,Thank you for all.
:)
Just kidding
Nice to meet you any way

:)

@Zanna Is there anything which is equivalent to nautilus any sugections?

oh I don't recommend removing nautilus...
it's probably not really nautilus' fault

@Zanna But what i want to see is my desktop thats all how can i achive this?
is there anything equalent to him?

the desktop is empty you say, like this ? askubuntu.com/questions/17381/…

8:02 AM
@Zanna I have installed thunar
Working i am able to see folders but still the desktop is empty
How can i configure the same for the desktop

I don't know

1 hour later…
9:28 AM
Good morning || afternoon || evening.
I've found an easy OT close! askubuntu.com/questions/857988/…

morning @Arronical how are you? :)
@Arronical hmm I hope I have a good alibi for missing that 23 hours ago...

@Zanna Not bad, (hopefully) just waving goodbye to a cold. How about you?

pretty excellent, just wishing there were more hours in the day, usual thing!

Haha, in opposition to my view that I just want more time to sleep!

not really, I'd definitely use some of those extra hours to sleep more ^_^
I love it when you get a question you answered yourself in an audit... it's like meeting an old friend
Another MacOS one needs one more vote askubuntu.com/questions/858237/…
Yay my question is in HNQs :D

10:10 AM
@Zanna of which question?

10:38 AM
sorry. was busy on something more interesting ...

sorry for what? and what was interesting ? :)

10:51 AM
bbl

later :)

11:16 AM
Do commands like sudo service foo start work on the latest systemd Ubuntu?
Don't you need to use systemctl instead?

11:29 AM
@terdon I just left the house, so can't check in my 16.10, but it was fine to do sudo service foo start on 16.04

@Zanna Thanks. Was that already using systemd?

@terdon oh yeah, since 15.04, right? It was definitely systemd, and I used systemctl except for testing AU stuff like this

OK, thanks. I'me reviewing a script for someone at work and they have the service foo enable command. I worry that it's no longer very portable. Not even between Ubuntu versions, but it looks like it's OK. Thanks!

Any time! I'll check on 16.10 when I get home just to be certain

Hi guys! @terdon I don't know for sure but I think that service might be deprecated. See this question/answer on U&L:
13
Q: service vs. systemctl scripts -- which to use

MarkIn Fedora we have 'systemctl' and 'service' scripts. It seems that service internally calls systemctl. So what is the correct/right way on Fedora to start or stop services -- via systemctl or service facility? May be there are nuances to keep in mind?

11:38 AM
@MarkYisri Yeah, it is. I was wondering if it still works on Ubuntu. That's a useful reference that I'd not seen though, thanks!

@terdon no problem! I use both on Ubuntu.

12:11 PM
Hi @Zanna if it is for easy usage, try the latest added Gtk version (of your date question). Then you can do more in a row :)

12:54 PM
@JacobVlijm cool I will check it out :D

2 hours later…
2:59 PM
@Zanna You want only days or years, months and days count for your question?

@Anwar hmm for myself in days, but hey if you can give in years months and days that would be neat!

That's a pain... But only the day difference seems not as complicated as I thought

well days is best :)
hmm seems more than usual of the "I have absolutely no idea whatsoever about Ubuntu, please tell me what I need to know" questions this week

ha ha. It's not Ubuntu specific like the other questions, but questionable..

@JacobVlijm wow that's so awesome! So nifty! thank you for that!

3:19 PM
thanks for asking an interesting question. I thought it will be straightforward. Learned something new. Especially the date difference is maintained in Ruby very nicely

ahh good I'm glad you got something out of it :) I hoped people would enjoy answering it

:) @Anwar yes we spoke about time & date compications as well last night and its a real PITA if you have to make your project comply with timezones(daylight saving etc)

@Videonauth I agree. There is a rubygem time_diff that does something like that with months, days etc. But It seems that is outdated
wow! Jacob made that answer awesome

oh i see a ruby answer has been delivered

haha I love your script Anwar
I love the wording

3:25 PM
@Zanna Thanks :)

and i just figured out how many days ago I was born hahahaha
it's so cool
thank you so much

@Videonauth just check the api price timeanddate.com/services/api

@Zanna Cool? I think it makes me feel even older...

ha ha!. It was fun
I'm not going to check mine though :D

haha it's really great when I put in today's date
please upvote Anwar's answer everyone askubuntu.com/a/858451/527764
(and Jacob's answer too if you didn't already)

3:29 PM
got 2 already. enough for a late answer.. I'm happy
@edwinksl Thanks for asking ...
food time...bbl

@edwinksl seconded :)

400 a year, well if you make enough revenue with your app this might be an option, but if you don't well you have to code it yourself mostly

3:44 PM
@ByteCommander Huh? Aren't you like 22 or something? Early 20ies anyway?
You don't get to say things like that before at least being on the wrong side of 35 or so. And even then it's kinda of silly :P

3:56 PM
@terdon 20 + a bit more than a month... I still already feel like a dinosaur.

smh

4:09 PM
Can reindeer really fly?

Maybe if you spell it rain-deer, it can fly downwards... but else...

I wonder how it works...

Reindeer don't fly. They just fall with style.

Fun fact: the geographic north pole is under water.

4:18 PM
Where's the fun in that?

Santa is a scuba diver!

what about the magnetic pole?

That's under land.

@ByteCommander Sadly, the rules of the be nice policy and the weight of responsibility my diamond lays upon my feeble, old shoulders, preclude me from giving you the answer that statement deserves.

@Zanna that makes more sense. Then he can use a compass to get home.

4:23 PM
@George When editing posts, do try not to re-upload images. When you do that, the reviewer then has to check whether the images are actually the same, whereas normally they could just view the changes made in markdown. It's simple to convert a link to an SE imgur upload (like https://i.stack.imgur.com/foobar.png) to an embedded one: ![](https://i.stack.imgur.com/foobar.png).
Of course, it's a different case if the images were not originally uploaded to the Stack Exchange imgur subdomain. But right now I'm talking of edits like askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/651663

@terdon you have two damn diamonds!

Just imagine the weight!
Diamonds, damned diamonds and upvotes.

@terdon I'm sure I can handle it :P

@terdon I second the unsaid rightful answer

:)

4:28 PM
That moment when you get the 1000 views badge on a question with 4 upvotes -.-

@Seth Ugh, yeah, I hate that.

@Seth I have some on Qs with 1 vote only.

@ByteCommander Yes, but do they have the famous question badge?
I have a question on ELU which got me that badge and only has 6 upvotes.

My Famous Questions range from 9 to 173 votes.
The one with +9 has 22k views.

maybe most of the views came from non-users
can you see the invisible upvotes?

4:34 PM
@ByteCommander Mine (on U&L) go from 5 to 364. . .
I only have 2 questions here and one was closed as a dupe.
Which it was.

5:14 PM
@edwinksl kinda. Need Data.SE query.

Q: Should we support questions about installing Android on Ubuntu Touch Devices?

Patrick NegusAs listed here in this question, OP is asking for a guide on how to install Android/CM/Flyme on his MX4. Is this off-topic? @Bruni pointed out that we support installing Windows on a pre-installed Ubuntu machine. My biggest caveat with this is that we open a can of worms regarding people brick...

5:29 PM
hell we support installing windows on ubuntu preinstalled pc questions? srsly?????

@jokerdino that's my favourite query :)

5:51 PM
@PatrickNegus This is a bit inconsistent. Why is installing Windows on an Ubuntu pre-installed computer on topic, but installing an Android flavor on an Ubuntu Touch pre-installed device off topic? I never understood the first case (PC), but if the first part is accepted, imho so should be the second. — Bruni 2 hours ago
Huh?
installing Windows on an Ubuntu pre-installed computer is on topic?

my first reaction
but wasnt sure either really

@terdon maybe because of this askubuntu.com/q/133533/295286

@Serg Yeah, that was what I'd thought of too, but that is about removing Ubuntu, not installing Windows.

well i was close to answer this meta with simple two words : "Hell NO"

Heh
There's that giff from the meta.SE new profile page question that Seth reposted recently
