@AnubianNoob sexey
OK, script idea, guys. I wanna know when my dad's computer is up. Of the top of my head, i know i can do something like while [ 1 ]; do ping -c 1 192.168.0.xx &> /dev/null ; test ! $(echo $?) || wall " Win 7 is up "; sleep 360; done
But is there any better ideas ?
@AnubianNoob what's the icon theme by the way ?

@Serg It's for George's next video :)

@NathanOsman Gonna be looking towards it !

2:40 AM
@NathanOsman quick question, would you have an idea, why *.run file would start when i give full path to it, in terminal like, $ /home/user/qt.run but if I do ./qt.run the shell complains that there's no file

Q: How do I unfreeze my ssd?

مجاهدI have a Patriot Torqx 2 32GB SSD internally installed along with my main hdd, which in the beginning worked, but now it seems to be frozen, when I am trying to do secure erasing. @Serg That's odd.

It happens.

Hmmm, another binary gives segmentation fault
Well, I am confused

2:49 AM
What are you trying to do?

install qt of course

And the installer's giving you a segmentation fault?

yessir

Why don't you want to install Qt from the archives? It's much easier.
sudo apt-get install qtbase5-dev
...and you can install Qt Creator with:
sudo apt-get install qtcreator

3:05 AM
@NathanOsman Ok . . . summary A.B. was answering this question. I tried the same thing in his answer, didn't work. So I downloaded couple installers from the official mirrors and tried to run them one way or another
I got it to work when i give full path

3:21 AM
@NathanOsman post that as answer. Maybe itll be easier for OP

Q: Random pieces of ancient hardware not working together (Mac G5, Sun network adapter)

Joe JoemanThis is probably some kind of weird esoteric hardware combination but it's not why I did it. It's just what I had lying around. I have a 2x 2ghz Mac G5 and I can't really bring myself to part with it even though I know it's a power drain and inefficient by today's standards. I decided I wanted to...

Good day people....first time in the room

@danidee Welcome!

@danidee Hello!

Technically i'm still a noob when compared with other seasoned Ubuntu users, i've been using ubuntu for over a year now and i chose it because it's the most stable distro i've used till date....i used to like Kubuntu, but some applications where crashing too frequently for no reason so i ditched it
Why do you guys use ubuntu over distros?

More compatible for me, and better application support across repositories, etc.

4:06 AM
I use Ubuntu for its ubiquity and widespread use within the developer community.

Everyone around me uses windows....i've tried spreading the ubuntu philosophy but most people are too lazy to learn something new and they don't even like the idea of using the terminal at all

Mac users do the same.

i have a friend who always tells me that Macs are the best and so on.....but seriously i really don't see anything special about them that PC's or Linux boxes can't do so i just call them overrated and overpriced boxes and it really pisses him off

Give them a set of about 200 consecutively numbered images (0001.jpg, 0002.jpg, etc.) and then challenge them to convert each of them to PNG files and switch the order (0001.jpg becomes 0200.png, etc.).

the only thing that seemed special about osx was the lack of viruses, but it didn't seem special again when i discovered ubuntu

4:16 AM
That would be trivial to do with a command in the terminal.

i thought mac also uses bash....a seasoned mac user should be able to do that also

Hmm... good point.
Except they would need to install an image conversion program like ImageMagick, I assume.
I have a Mac, but I don't use it that much. It's mostly for testing purposes.

but i'm very confident that he won't be able to do that though

Looks like i missed some conversation here when I walked away.
Scripting on the Mac is much different then on a PC running Linux. Library calls are different, and hardware calls are different. To make a script to work on both, it basically has to be two scripts in one.

4:21 AM
Or you could use Python :)
I haven't had to modify any of my Python scripts when running them on my Mac.

Say, you need a script that can capture TCP packets from the active network connection.

yeah with the os module i think

@Terrance That's a bit... low-level.

I can do that in bash without a problem :)
getting standard eth0 output was easy.

Yeah, by calling external commands :P

4:24 AM
I tried it on the mac, and I would have to rewrite the script to work.
It's hardware calls are different

i was just wondering ubuntu uses samba/smbd to share files between two computers does windows use the same?

Yes and no. Windows does indeed use SMB. Actually, SMB is just one of many protocols for transferring files on Linux.
Incidentally, I'm the author of a program that simplifies transferring files among devices on a local network.

=)
I would have to find some of the scripts I have written for work here. Some of the guys on my team like to use Macs, but they still log into Ubuntu or RHEL servers for the majority of the work commands they use.
But my preferred is two separate systems, one Ubuntu and the other Windows. Ubuntu for all the server work and Windows for all the admin work. Plus, I get more real estate on monitors and using Synergy between them. :)

At one point, I wondered about installing Xen on my desktop and running both at the same time :P

Not familiar with Xen.

4:32 AM
i'm also working on a file sharing program just like yours to share files via wifi but mine would strictly run on windows....just trying to do some research

It's a bare-metal hypervisor.

Ah, yes, hypervisors I am familiar with. They are used on a lot of our servers for the VMs, depending on what the server is used for.
I will take a look at Xen. :)

@Nathan i just installed nitroshare....nice work i also want to use qt but with python

@danidee Thanks.
Yeah, PyQt is a great library too.

i use PySide but the differences with PyQt are not much

just downloaded the windows installer i'll give it to some of my folks so they can check it out....they were using shareit to share files but some of them have complaints about it.
do you plan on adding support for internet connection sharing in the future?

Cool.
@danidee You mean sharing files outside of a local network?

no...like me connecting to a friends computer and using his internet

Internet Connection Sharing?

No, I don't have any plans for that at this point.

4:49 AM
Morning

@A.B. Hi!

@A.B. Hey buddy!

He @Terrance o/ :)

=)

@NathanOsman how does smb on windows and nix systems differ

4:51 AM
Interesting question

The most common SMB implementation on Linux is Samba and its goal is to mimic how Windows uses the protocol as closely as possible.

and i think windows would also want to keep that closed

Why not? They have kept the PrintSpooler closed, and it sucks! ;)

They're also pretty tight-lipped about NTFS. Lots of reverse-engineering was required to get that working well on Linux.

oh oh Windows....Did any of you get fooled on 1st April by that Miux article too

5:03 AM
OK, time for me to hit the hay. Many servers are awaiting me in the morning to install RHEL on them. Have a great night / day all! =)

Sleep well @Terrance

i have an issue with firefox i'm always getting secure connection failed on any site i go to....This started happening after i did a dist-upgrade...has any one experienced this

5:24 AM
Sounds like a certificate issue. I'm not seeing it.
Does it provide any further details about the error?

When is LibreOffice 5.0 going to be available in the repositories by the way does anyone know? :)

Oli
@ParanoidPanda ppa:libreoffice/ppa

user136984
@Oli: Ok, thanks! But when will it be available in the main repositories?

Oli
@ParanoidPanda When its maintainer packages it and pushes it into the main repositories.

@ParanoidPanda btw, You can check for updates at ubuntuupdates.org/?type=ppas&vals=75

user136984
12:00 PM
@Oli: How do I view the libreoffice changelog now that I have installed it from the PPA?

user136984
apt-get changelog libreoffice doesn't seem to find anything.

Oli
Yeah that doesn't work for PPAs. You'll have to look it up manually.

user136984
@Oli: Oh, is there no way of doing it through Terminal?

Oli
@ParanoidPanda Sure, you could wget the libreoffice website and grep out the changelog... But no, not in a way that makes any sense.

user136984
@Oli: Why isn't there a standard way of doing it?

12:22 PM
@Pandya windows and fedora 22 at home. Dedi runs Fedora and ubuntu. WOrk runs centos 6

user136984
12:33 PM
@Oli: Isn't the changelog always located in debian/changelog? And if so, why is there no standard way of getting it from the PPA? Could this feature be implemented or is there a specific problem which would arise from doing so?

@JourneymanGeek btw, I wanted to know if vlc runs from tty (for this)

sorry for disturbing (if)

er...
Its bloody hillarious
I have no idea how to stop it tho
That's over putty
(yeah, not a proper tty, I was lazy)

for me it is working well with full screen
and I've to Ctrl+C to irrupt
@JourneymanGeek I am talking about tty (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F1)

12:45 PM
I don't have a screen attached to my linux boxen

no need to hammer ; good bye

Oli
@ParanoidPanda There is, it just doesn't support PPAs. They're hosted on changelogs.ubuntu.com and that only works for the main repos. Feel free to tell Debian to do it better.
(Or tell Canonical to push every changelog from every PPA to changelogs.ubuntu.com)

user136984
1:04 PM
@Oli: How do I get in contact or file a bug report with Canonical?

Oli
@ParanoidPanda There are probably better ways than just asking me everything. I recently heard about this a called Ask Ubuntu. Check it out.

user136984
@Oli: Ooh! How interesting! I think I just might! ;P

user136984

@Mateo: Well, I mean can you give an example of some software which you can install through there, but is paid for software. If you can install it through there that is, which I am sure that you can as there is a repository for it.

Never happened to me before.
Did you try opening the project in Android studio?

anyway things like mp3, the full add ons to 7-zip, certain video codecs
canonical licenses the mp3 thing so they can include it
so they are paying that for you
