3:04 PM
@HeatherBrown sure..
@Rinzwind Hi, long time..

I'm utterly confused with gsettings. It works on one thing, but doesn't work on the other

@Rinzwind I'm poor to bet that much amount.
Anything other than else?
If you and me delete all of our answers then SO and AU would kick both of us.

would be nice if rep translated to a certain amount in real currency :)

@Serg ya, then I'll be rich.

I'm on 10k. 10k in real currency would do good for my college education
and maybe other small things here and there

3:11 PM
you mean 10k USD?
@Rinzwind Ok, here is the bet. If I win, You have to send some pictures of yours to my personal email account. Likewise I'll do the same if I loose.

yup

Hi @seth

Hi!

@Seth Hi!

How's moderation?

3:16 PM
Busy lol

wow, check this out: yahoo.com/tech/s/…
windows 10 reboots forever :p

ouch
Trying to change backround with gsettings. For a strange reason background doesn't change, but lightdm background changed alright. facepalm

3:36 PM
oh, do you have nautilus showing icons?

Can anyone delete this duplicate? askubuntu.com/a/660587/367165

it has it's own background overlay, so you might be changing the background under the background

3:49 PM
@Mateo so I have to kill nautilus first, change background , then start nautilus again
?

@Serg common, give me an upvote :)

@A.B. upvotes, coming right up :) sorry, I'm still fighting with gsettings here, I wasn't much active on the site today

@Seth It's fantastic. It's the only site where an individual can be able to earn 500 reps without any bounties in a single day.

@Serg well, you would at least see if you were changing the actual background underneath...

@Mateo that's the thing, I run gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri file:///home/xieerqi/Firefox_wallpaper.png , and it has no effect. But somehow , and only once, it changed my lightdm background. Since I changed my background through GUI, lightdm also changed. gsettings command still doesn't work
*$ gsettings writable org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri
true
*$ gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.desktop.background
org.gnome.desktop.background picture-opacity 100
org.gnome.desktop.background secondary-color '#000000'
org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons true
org.gnome.desktop.background primary-color '#000000'
org.gnome.desktop.background color-shading-type 'solid'
org.gnome.desktop.background picture-options 'zoom'
org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri 'file:///home/xieerqi/Firefox_wallpaper.png'
org.gnome.desktop.background draw-background true
There you see picture-uri changed, but the actual image is not changed, desktop still shows old background

4:03 PM
@Serg your GNOME version? 3.14?

@A.B. *$ gnome-shell --version
GNOME Shell 3.14.4
Just ran this gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background draw-background false && gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri file:///home/$USER/Imágenes/pic.jpg && gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background draw-background true. Wallpaper switched to default. The picture uri non existent but it . . . worked ?
??????
jpg image worked !!!!

OMG

png doesn't work , but jpg works ? what the heck !

Big bug
Use 3.16 :)

Should I report this as a bug ?

4:08 PM
Sure
Have you tested with the system settings?

Well, Firefox sets png image, everything else sets png image just fine,too
file:///home/xieerqi/Pictures/Wallpapers/Screenshot\ from\ 2015-05-23\ 00\:44\:06.png
this worked
Then why Firefox_wallpaper.png didn't work ?
now it works ?
I give up

No spaces in the filenames
:)

I had no spaces before ! I literally just executed the same exact command I executed like 20 times this morning

@Serg to few spaces ;)

@A.B. lol might be. Anyhow, it works now. For some unknown reason. I give up at this point and need a nap
the language setting command still doesnt work tho
in gnome, but works in unity
I might post this as a question later
@Fabby hi there
Do you have a tiny bit of time ? I have an issue with one of the questions here askubuntu.com/a/660276/295286
OP in the comments keeps getting segmentation fault

4:25 PM
@Serg Reading

If I change keyboard in gnome , the schemas in gsettings dont get updated. I may be on input source 1, but gsettings will still report 0

@Serg You're trying to do an in-place recovery...
The OP is asking to make a back-up of its last files...

Well, obviously no recovery options are working. So I can only suggest reinstalling the system . . . right ?

Boot from lived DVD/USB
recover files, then do a memtest
then a "try Ubuntu"
then smartctl is the approach I would take for segmentation faults...
@Serg: good enough?
Some additional advice for the future: if the guest session is crashing as well, it's a system issue.

Got it. Well, I guess I'll go edit my answer and leave OP a comment

4:34 PM
Very heroic to still try to make the system work, but my experience over the years, this is true in any OS...
;-)
@Serg good!

@AvinashRaj there are no RL pixs of me on the web. Nor have I ever felt the need to start taking pics of me >:-D

@Rinzwind There are about 100 pics of me around (never liked to be the subject of pictures, even when I was a baby) and half of those are old-fashioned paper pictures so that leaves 50 pics of me to worry about and none are identifiably on the Internet.
(Did I ever mention I have no FaceBook account?)
>:-)

4:49 PM
I like taking pics

5:10 PM
@Fabby o/
Why should I upvote a comment of a question or answer?

@NoTime ever try this one: sourceforge.net/projects/rebeccablackos

6:06 PM
I really don't like either. I just thought it was funny. But anyways it's not Friday now anyway
@Mateo just surprised it's wayland

name aside, is a nice tech demo

I am trying to figure out how to make a HIPAA compliant network, with no money, and what is going to be the easiest to do

Hi , I really need help on smal thing here ..

ask away, there are usually various people hanging around with different skills

i want to edit one file in a deive where FreeBSD is installed. i arrived to to do very well , thanks to this : askubuntu.com/questions/85154/mount-ufs-filesystem , problem is: the mounted system is always Read Only, no matter what i do. And so there is no way to edit the file i need in the mounted drive..

6:18 PM
is it ro in fstab?

on second, thanks.
how do i issue this on ?
like how to find out ?

user139252
You can do a sudo gedit /etc/fstab if you have GUI access, or sudo vi /etc/fstab if you only have CLI access. (You can use the editor of your choice, you don't have to use gedit or vi)

or sudo nano

user139252
Then, find the drive in that file and see if it mentions being mounted as Read-Only

user139252
@Mateo That's why I made the note about editor of choice :P

6:22 PM
i find nano easy to use for beginning ;)

no whait...
When using sudo mount -r -t ufs -o ufstype=ufs2 /dev/sdb1 /home/<your_username>/ufs_mount , if i replace -r by -rw it wount work
i can mount it now using only the -r option. should i go ahead ?
i can use Vi , no problem.

oh, well maybe a problem anyway:

Q: Mounting ufs partition with read/write permissions on ubuntu 10.04

nixnotwinAccording to this writeup ufs kernel module is compiled with only read permissions. I could mount a ufs partition with this command: sudo mount -t ufs -r -o ufstype=ufs2 /dev/mapper/loop0p1 /mnt/freebsd/ And it mounts the filesystem without write permissions. There is a ufs-utils package for D...

user139252
Try sudo mount -o remount,rw -t ufs ufstype=ufs2 /dev/sdb1 /home/<your_username>/ufs_mount

user136984
Is anyone else running Firefox 40 and Shumway getting this message in their add-ons list?

user136984

6:26 PM

user136984
@Mateo: Why is it showing that message?

Thanks Meteo, it seems to be. I could also use freebsd booting drive. Where could i mount the disk ?, also using the usb terminalogy for disk slices names, any directions on this ?

user136984
@Mateo: Ah, right, so is it best to keep it disabled then during the period that it is unsigned?

6:40 PM
sorry I dropped right after saying check the fstab.

don't know, wasn't signed before, firefox just upped security I think

No Time , its ok

user139252
So, back in 14.04, I was able to setup a network connection as access point mode. Now, it's only letting me setup as ad-hoc in 15.04. How can I make it AP instead of Ad-Hoc?

irc is strange...

Q: Is it on-topic to ask about plugins in a browser?

Paranoid PandaI was just wondering, is it on-topic here to ask about plugins in a browser, when the browser is running on Ubuntu, but the plugin is browser and not OS specific?

6:46 PM
I think shumway warning about not being signed is a non-issue - there is even a bug report...

@A.B. Huh?

@Fabby huh what? :)

I don't understand "Why should I upvote a comment of a question or answer?". What are you talking about?

7:02 PM
Makes any sense to give a comment an "upvote"

user136984
@Mateo: Ok :)

@A.B. Did I ask you to upvote a comment??? That must have been in error... ;-)

@Fabby on the left hand side of a comment, I can use the ^ to mark/upvote a comment.

user136984
Where do I report a bug about the bug reporting thing? :D

user136984
Is it apport?

7:13 PM
@A.B. Yes, I know this... So??? (I'm reading the individual words and understand them, but still have no clue what you want me to do...)

@ParanoidPanda apport

user136984
Ok, thanks! :)

user139252
@Fabby I think @A.B. has just recently discovered the ability to upvote comments, and therefore would like to upvote all of the comments he can.

No @HeatherBrown @Fabby I wanted to know why I can mark a comment with +1

Ah! Finally!
NOW I understand!
:-)

user139252
7:18 PM
@A.B. Because, sometimes, comments can be useful or helpful. So, upvoting it shows its worth.

what does that make sense
:)

@A.B. E.G.: to allow the system to show that a close vote was used more then once...
(in the review queues)
then people complain: "If the system can upvote comments, why can't I???"
That's how shit happens...
;-)
It's indeed not useful at all...-

Now I feel stupid :)

user139252
@Fabby Everything is useful, just not useful to everyone.

user139252
I'll be right back, this coffee is horrible and needs creamer. Not letting the new guy make coffee again.

7:39 PM
Meteo you are there ?

Q: How to permanently update /run/network/ifstate

BaconI had a system (ubuntu server 14.04) installed on a machine with only 1 NIC. I moved the hard drive to one where there is two. I can properly configure my network, but each time I edit /run/network/ifstate to add the new second NIC, and restart the interfaces through ifup and ifdown, the content...

user136984
VTC this Windows remove Ubuntu question as off-topic.

user139252
@ParanoidPanda I flagged it for you :P

user139252
I'm too lame to VTC.

@pigeon use the at sign to ping the person

user136984
7:51 PM
@HeatherBrown: Are you green?

user136984
With white splodges?

@pigeon oh, I don't know much about your question, I'm just decent with a search engine

user139252
@ParanoidPanda No, I'm white with green triangles.

user136984
Or is my monitor going weird again...? :D

user136984
Oh... :D

user139252
7:52 PM
I want to go home and sleep. Why do I have to work?

user136984
You work because you see it as work, if you saw it as something else, then it would be that something else.

user136984
@HeatherBrown: I see what you see as work, as a pineapple, so for me it is that. ;)

user136984
Yum!

user139252
I see it as work because we're still in summer school and therefore have no English students. So I spend my work day helping in the math department.

user136984
It is whatever you see it to be, and if you see it a work, then it is that.

user139252
7:59 PM
Does anyone want to come teach this Calculus unit for me while I take a nap?

user136984
But I prefer pineapples... :P

Meteo i found the solution , very interesting though!!!

user139252
Me too. Pineapples are tangy and sweet. They taste amazing with kiwi.

user136984
Ooh! Infinitesimal Calculus! That's a big pineapple! :D

user136984
Yum!

user139252
8:02 PM

user136984
I like big pineapples... I will have to try them with kiwis!

user139252
They fixed my Ubuntu! No more windows!

user136984
Although I am mildly allergic to both so (pineapples and kiwis)... :D

user136984
But I sill eat and love them!

Meteo here is a link to my struggle : unix.stackexchange.com/questions/222822/…

8:05 PM
@pigeon cool, glad you were able to

user136984
@HeatherBrown: Is that 14.04 or 15.04?

user136984
@pigeon: I am curious, are you really a pigeon?

@Meteo thank you for the time!

:)

user139252
@ParanoidPanda 15.04

8:09 PM
@paranoid , yes i am ! why? does it bother you ?

8:22 PM
@A.B.: VTC to close as off-topic and no other answers can be added...

user139252
@pigeon We broke @ParanoidPanda

@HeatherBrown Yes, because @ParanoidPanda is only pretending to be a Panda!
If you look closer to his picture, he's actually the opposite of me: he's a creature from hell!

anyone know why a key in $HOME/.ssh named github_ecdsa is being ignored by SSH and ssh-agent ?

user136984
@Fabby @HeatherBrown: Indeed I am! >:)

user136984

8:26 PM
@ParanoidPanda And I summoned you across the border between Earth and Hell! >:D

user136984
>:D

I am scared !

user139252
I think IT blocked imgur on our network...

user136984
@ThomasW.: I have bridged the gap between Earth and Hell, you summoned me as my master, but now I am yours. >:)

user136984
Ooh! Must drain the souls of the chocolate cakes now! >:P

user136984
8:39 PM
BRB!

user136984
@Fabby: Do you like chocolate cake?

user136984
And do you know if there is a good way to remove it from hard drives safely?

@ThomasW. Definitely a PEBKAC. Have someone else try...
;-)
@HeatherBrown It's a high-res of his Avatar...
@ParanoidPanda [ignore mode on]
@ThomasW. What's the output of ll ~/.ssh?
(owner issue?)

user136984
@Fabby: What? Why? :D

@ParanoidPanda "Irrelevant ping error count: OVERFLOW"

user136984
8:44 PM
Ok... :D

user136984
Ok, does anyone know how to remove chocolate cake from the inside of your machine?

user136984
Safely, bits that the hoover won't remove.

user136984
@Fabby: Well I assumed that if you did like chocolate cake, you might be more able to give me advise on removing it...

@ParanoidPanda Mail server, unix command, etc...

user136984
:D

user139252
8:47 PM
....Why is there chocolate cake in your machine?

@ParanoidPanda Different problem, same solution
@HeatherBrown DON'T! Please! I don't even want to know!
;-)

user136984
@Fabby: Where can I get a can of CO2?

Did anyone else notice that lmgtfy.com is not allowed in answers any more?
@ParanoidPanda What's your postal code?
I'll google it for you then!
@ParanoidPanda iIrrelevantPingCount++

user136984
@HeatherBrown: Like @Fabby said, you really don't want to know... :P

user136984
@Fabby: No, it's fine, I'll Google it! :D

user136984
8:57 PM
@Fabby: There don't seem to be any in the city I live in... However I am sure that I'll find something! Do you know any big brands that would have it? Like Maplins or something? :D

user136984
Wait, I may have found something...

@ParanoidPanda iIrrelevantPingCount++
@ParanoidPanda iIrrelevantPingCount++

@Fabby: care to tell me what 'll' is an alias for?
'cause I use ZSH, the aliases aren't there

@ThomasW. ls -al ??? lemme check
alias ll='ls --all -l --classify --human-readable'

% ls --all -l --classify --human-readable | grep github_ecdsa

user136984
9:07 PM
I think I know how to crash my machine! And I'm going to give it a go! :P

@ThomasW. you seem to not have the file known_hosts
Have a look here

user139252
@ThomasW. ls -alF

@Fabby note the grep

Hrmpf

known_hosts is there
and working

9:09 PM
No clue then...
Ask @Whaaaaaat when he comes on-line.
He has more knowledge about this then me...

user136984
@pigeon: What kind of pigeon are you? Because I only like big fat wood pigeons... :D That go "Coo coo coo!" outside of my window!

@ParanoidPanda You somehow got close enough to an open machine while eating chocolate cake? What were you thinking?

user136984
@HeatherBrown: "Yum!" is what I was thinking! :D

user139252
But...

user139252
9:14 PM
But... the computer. Think about the componenets!

user136984
My stomach seemed more important at the time... :P

@ThomasW. Sorry, man... :-(

user136984
Anyway...

user136984
Time for bed, more chocolate cake, and computer maintenance! >:P

user136984
Goodnight everyone! :)

9:19 PM
@ParanoidPanda See you later.

user139252
Goodbye everyone!

@HeatherBrown :D

10:04 PM
@Fabby ???

@Whaaaaaat you're an expert at ssh, no?

@Fabby Somewhat. What's the issue?

@ThomasW. Follow the link to ThomasW.'s problem... @Whaaaaaat
As usual: I don't have any problem... ;-) I'm here to solve problems... :D

@ThomasW. What happens when you force the key?

If you need me, ping me: I'm in another tab on a back-up Q

user139252
10:20 PM
@ThomasW. I know it could be silly...but try removing every key but the one you want to use?

10:41 PM
@HeatherBrown for no habla espanol that's good already lol
@HeatherBrown habla any other lingoes ?
anyone has any ideas for window scripts ? something along the lines of askubuntu.com/q/660643/295286 and askubuntu.com/q/655628/295286 perhaps. I just wanna practice scripting a bit more

user139252
@Serg I speak German and English fluently, and a little bit of French.

@HeatherBrown Nice. How hard you'd say it is to learn German ?

user139252
@Serg Not as hard as it was to learn English :P. I grew up in a German-speaking household.

I've a cousin living somewhere near Berlin, so I'd love to learn the language and impress her someday :p
@HeatherBrown any ideas on scripts for GUI stuff like I linked above ?

user139252
I could suggest running a Python script in the background that checks for the currently running program and then runs a bash command based on that...

user139252
10:52 PM
This answer mentions finding current window title through python

user139252
Then, also do a from os import system and then add in system('gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.input-sources current 0')

user139252
Second part is based from this answer.

user139252
But, then again, I'm a Python addict and you could probably do this in a different fashion :D

user139252
I'm about to leave work now, so if I have time while I'm home, I'll find you on here and send you a pastebin of a rudimentary script I just wrote for it.

user139252
Have a good night, everyone!

11:30 PM
@ParanoidPanda Ah keep thinking you will find me.

Hi people!
so yeah, a long time since I'm not around here :|
gotta go, have a good one everybody! hope to be back soon

11:55 PM
Anyone still around?

that will be me the Pigeon.

@Serg @Serg: you still here?
@pigeon Sorry, I need some higher rep help...
But If I'm in need of LaTeX help, I'll know where to find you!

serg is scripting
hi @Fabby how u doing

@RonnieNissan :-) Can you do me a favour and upvote this answer to bring it to the top?
As this is exactly what the OP needs, looking at the comments...

11:58 PM
:-) Thanks, man!

i alrady upvoted your answer there bro

@pigeon You see? Upvoting starts from 50 or so...
@RonnieNissan How come you're up at so weird times?
