Q: I need help booting in to GRUB. 13.04

MhikeiMPCI need help booting in to grub in 13.10. I cant get to grub. I didn't exactly install Ubuntu. It was preinstalled for my specific pc (its a smart book from Taiwan) and I copied it to my SD card (because it only boots from SDcard by default) and when I press shift, nothing happens it just goes int...

Hello, I am not sure why nohup doesn't save a process from its parent shell process terminating?

Q: Why is chromium-browser killed when I close the terminal despite nohup?

TimThis question is old, and I am still not clear about why. In a Gnome Terminal tab, I ran $ nohup chromium-browser & But when I close the terminal tab, chromium-browser also exits. Isn't nohup supposed to prevent that? Gilles said: nohup and disown both can be said to suppress SIGHUP, but ...

This is one of the better forum comments I've read:
> "I got it all back to gether okay, but now I have to figure out where the printhead possision sensor is, as I keep getting a print head jammed error afer the print head trys to slam itself through the right side of the printer. *Sigh"
> - Source
There's something funny about trying to picture the printhead slamming itself repeatedly against the side of the printer.

@Mateo ok, so I see it got called 3 times.
That's not supposed to happen.
What kernel version do you have?

3.16.0-33-generic

12:11 AM
huh, actually newer than me.

oh, and I just installed virturalbox kernel headers...
hm....

lemme see if I'm behind and can reproduce.
huh, no kernel update.
@Mateo You on 15.04?

14.10

same..
I wonder why you have a newer kernel.

what version are you on?

12:17 AM
3.16.0-31-generic.
major typo there ;P
@Mateo Can you add a line to the script echo "1" >> /home/Mateo/Documents/testing.logto the bottom of the script? I'm pretty sure the event is being called 3 times but best be sure.
Then plug it in and see how many 1s you get in the file.

oh, check this out -

@Mateo That's one unplug and then one plug back in?

This is a bad sign:
Seems to be common.

@NathanOsman indeed. Welcome to the wonderful world of HP Printers.

the three ac events?

12:23 AM
@Mateo There's actually 4.
I'm guessing 1 for remove and 3 for plug in.

@Seth I've had it up to here with HP printers.
Actually, I've had it up to here with printers :P

There's a reason I use Epson ;)

@Mateo what does running udevadm monitor --environment --udev show when you remove the AC adapter?

2 mins ago, by Mateo
http://paste.ubuntu.com/10721427/

@Seth Thanks for the recommendation. They may just have a new customer.

12:24 AM
@Seth Thanks

The only problem is their ink has gotten a good deal more expensive of late..

Do they still work if you refill them yourself?

@Mateo So, looks like the event is indeed being triggered 3 times when you plug in..

Or is it like HP where the printer yells and screams when you insert a "non-genuine" cartridge?

@NathanOsman Haven't tried, but I really do not recommend doing that.

12:25 AM
well, I got to go

I've never refilled a cartridge, just curious.

@Mateo Wait

Which is why I get frustrated by HP - we've always bought genuine cartridges and it still breaks down... right after the warranty ends too :(

It does the same thing on mine
(not the popping up three times, but it shows the same output from udevadm)

@NathanOsman Almost positive this will happen, but I have no references other than most cartridge manufacturers embed a special chip into the cartridge..

12:27 AM
Yet another case of DRM :P

huh @joshumax @Mateo, I only get two AC events as expected.
@NathanOsman yep.. Can't say I blame them exactly buuuut... yeah.

I get 18

o_O

But I only get two from AC0

well I was already working on a dbus solution that doesn't require an infinite loop in bash.. I guess I'll just work harder?

12:29 AM
Which should only come up twice

Or we could look into a few other udev flags.

@Seth Well, I have no problem with them saying "your warranty is invalid" if I use non-genuine cartridges. They just had better not prevent me from installing and trying to use them.

but this method doesn't seem to be as reliable as I had hoped.

I'd need to see @Mateo's result from udevadm with the --environment flag set then

ok here it is @Seth

12:29 AM
As if on cue

Thanks @Mateo! I guess we'll catch you later?

@Seth: IIRC canon can be refilled but won't keep track fo how much ink you have.

here and there...

strange, three POWER_SUPPLY_ONLINE=1's

@JourneymanGeek Interesting. If I didn't get an Epson I'd probably get a Canon.. although HP just reuses Canon parts usually.

12:31 AM
Dell (which resells lexmark or samsung iirc) makes you clock through 3 menus, and tells you your warranty is void.
@Seth: well, the older canon we had just worked ;p

Actually, I'd prefer a Brother, but they don't make many small printers and I am unsure about their linux support.
@JourneymanGeek older == better :D

thinks we switch printers every 4-5 years ;p
and maybe 2 carts in that time per colour, not counting refills
Local ink store does sell a modded, CIS epson IIRC

Let's crowdfund a printer. It'll be compatible with Linux out-of-the-box, have easily-serviceable parts, and last for a good long time.

Okay great

Amirite?

12:32 AM
Along with 3 ACTION="change" @joshumax.

I found something else to compare against
Look at the bottom of this diff -- diffchecker.com/kdfozz1p
POWER_SUPPLY_STATUS=Charging vs POWER_SUPPLY_STATUS=Unknown
When do you want the notification popping up?

Doesn't really matter within the time frame we're discussing IMO.

just once on plugging in the ac adapter...

Ah, yes
The problem was my original udev script was for unplugging the adapter
s/script/rule/

it does that one fine ;)

12:35 AM
I'm still not having any issues :P

Here, I'll make a new one real quick

I'm going to (hopefully) replace all this with a python script.. but I still haven't figured it all out yet.

maybe just a strange quark of the hardware...

Hmm
Actually, it seems that POWER_SUPPLY_STATUS isn't very trustable
I can't actually find anything to discern between the triggers

yeah I was thinking the same thing.

12:41 AM
hmm
Let me think...

would have to write some kind of catch?
like only show once for so many hits on a change within 20 sec?

does adding OPTIONS+="last_rule" help at all?

dosn't look like it, but I could be doing it wrong

lemme try it
Fixed it for me
Your udev rules?

deleted ;p

12:48 AM
can you paste them?

where did you put the options at in the rule?

After the ENV and before the RUN
Works consistently on my end

I'll give it a go

@Seth, if this works can I update your answer?

@joshumax Go for it.

1:07 AM
@Mateo Any news on if it works?

1:19 AM
@NathanOsman - I think your ping logic is broken.

Huh?
Oh!

look at flackbot. he's floundering around with the numbers.

I didn't see him replying in this room!
I was testing him in the Sandbox.
My bad. Sorry.

it's okay. was just letting you know

@joshumax nah :/

1:26 AM
@Mateo - I tell you I actually tried that food? Totally delicious.
Not so good as leftovers though. Grilled cabbage as a part of a food gets really disgusting when you let it sit for a day. totally takes over the whole plate.

hm? play on words?

no, i was totally serious.

I guess I forgot something then...
:/
was it the egg dish I linked awhile back?

no it was something like this
think egg, protein, cabbage, crepe, and suped up ketchup + mayo as a sauce on top

oh, that reminded me of crab cakes, looks good with the bacon

1:32 AM
yeah, i totally used bacon.
didn't pair well with busch ice, but it was good food.

maybe something more like tecate or Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier

with it to do again, i would probably choose something sweet. like a newcastle.

awesome logo:

Nice. I think if you disagree with that you're either drinking the wrong beer, eating the wrong food, or both.

@ByteCommander Not sure if being mean and showing off your amazeballs internet, or if you legitimately think that's bad. 'cause 1GB would take somewhere upwards of 3-4 hours on my internet.
Whoa.... Flackbot has dat fancy new logo!

1:47 AM
@RPiAwesomeness just said amazeballs.

@hbdgaf o.O I did....yes
Is that an issue?

no, i just found it amusing.

Okay :)

ok, internet speed warz going on? We'll just call in @jrg and that'll silence everybody ;p

well we can't all live in a datacenter...
4

1:54 AM
@Seth I take it he has the super amazingness over-9000 internet speedz?

See @hbdgaf's comment above ;)
@hbdgaf made me smile, have a star.

think fiber to home * 2, and you're almost there.

maaan, fiber is coming in like 20 miles away from me :(
I can't complain about my internet other than it's outrageously over priced..

well, living in a camper, i could just back the truck up to where the internet feeds are. so...
just sayin'

@Seth If yours is overpriced, think of how bad mine must be.

2:03 AM
which is about 55 of our $

Or $50/m for 5mbps, which is a worse deal, IMHO.

woah, that is quite a jump

@NathanOsman Brah. $70 a month for 30 mbps? That's like, pocket change compared to what we could get for that around here. For $70 month you can get, like 3-5 mbps maybe.

@Mateo $55.49, not bad. Good guess.

That's being generous :P
Oh wait. Canadians.

2:04 AM
@RPiAwesomeness Wut.
That's practically robbery.

That's actually friggin amazing. $50 for 30 mbps. I'm movin to Canada.

Waits for @Rinzwind to say something about $10 Internet...

@NathanOsman Indeed :P

@NathanOsman I get phone and 20Mbps internet for $70 a month (US)

@Seth if @Rinzwind so much as peeps about his amazing European ISP, he is to be ban hammered. Okay?

2:05 AM
That's roughly our home phone + Internet bill except we get 1mbps.
@RPiAwesomeness Agreed.

oh I didn't say I got 20Mbps.

Oh...

I said I paid for 20Mbps ;)

When services get bundled, it's hard to figure out the cost of each individual utility.

@NathanOsman Yeah. From one provider (granted, its local and a fairly recent startup) you can get 3-5 Mbps for $80/month. I have yet to look at Comcast.

2:06 AM
Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.

@NathanOsman That's where it gets really bad.. If we took phone off of our bill it'd still be $60/70 bucks a month.

Best we can get from AT&T is 1.5 Mbps down for ~$40-$50 IIRC.

I'm getting 17 download right now which is fairly normal.

I gave up on them a while back

Practically never get 20.

2:07 AM
must be out there in the woods somewhere ;)

The next step down on the scale is ~$50 for 2Mbps.

@Mateo That's just it. We're ~5 minutes from a decently big town.

So far we've also been lucky in that the company hasn't forced us to use their router. They just give us a really dirt-cheap modem that I plug into this bad boy‌.

Funny thing is, AT&T keep sending us these letters trying to get us to upgrade and they include some form of "bonus" for doing so. However, there's two problems.

I suppose if they did send us one I could just disable the wireless radios and set up another router as a DMZ.
@RPiAwesomeness (1) they're a bad company (2) they don't offer better service.

2:09 AM
#1 We can't even get their Cable internet near us. #2 The deals have got worse every single letter we've got (at least 1 per month for the ~6-8 months)
@NathanOsman ikr. I've heard Comcast is worse though

@NathanOsman What were you saying your ping to Germany was?

Lemme check.

@RPiAwesomeness I'd say 9/10 chances ;)

I'm in charge of researching internet upgrade options for my family 'cause my mom needs it for online teaching. We have to have that and a new laptop for my mom by mid-June. Early birthday present for me :D
Probably gonna be getting the 2-3 mbps plan from the local ISP for $70 month (plus a cringe-worthy $200 installation fee & whatever it costs to get a new router)

I'm guessing that @Seth and I are the furthest west.

yup

Our times are about 30ms apart though.

2:14 AM
Just. Gotta. Hold. On. 2 & 1/2. More. Months.

Time to bring out the heavy gear: traceroute :)
Wow, my first hop is 35ms.
That might explain our difference @Seth.

traceroute don't wanna work for me :P

that'd be your router/modem no @NathanOsman?

Sorry, I meant the next one.
The 192.168.1.1 is my router.
From here to 10.31.250.1 is 35ms - I'm guessing that's my ISP's network gear.

that's what I meant.
seth@johnson:~$ traceroute hetzner.de

So your packets are taking a completely different route. And a shorter one at that.
(Shorter by number of hops.)
It's kind of fun to try and guess which of those is the trans-Atlantic hop.

Then why the massive slowdown on 8-9

@hbdgaf can't say, but you'll notice the URL's change from .us to .de on 10-11.
@RPiAwesomeness Part of it might be that you're closer to the east coast than we are, but that's pretty cool.

8-9 and 10-11 are both much more expensive than the rest of them for sure though...

@Seth o.O How is that cool?
It's 11 hops...is that good or something?

And yes, I'm definitely a fair bit more east than you silly seahawk fan
I is confused.
Oh. I takes you 16. I see

Oh jeepers. 20 hops. Yup. Mine's better for hops.

@Seth I would guess that means you've reached the final host and so traceroute is just letting you know

Yeah, that's probably it.

I'm making the same guess but no one else's output has it so it is kinda weird.

I get that too when I try it from a server in Dallas.

huh
I wonder if I have a newer version than you guys or something.

woah what would cause gdm to display over lightdm where you have to unlock twice...

Heh. Oh well. I added an extra 5 GB of premium data to my phone plan, so I get 10 GB per month before they slow it down now.
It sounds better than it is - I get about 1-2mbps during the day.
Overnight, when few people are using the network, I've got as high as 8mbps.
@Mateo Unlock-ception.

@Mateo o.O

so, I turned off unity's lock screen, and the gnome one is still there, something pulled in a dependency i guess...

@Mateo huh, I had that happen to me today too.

p   gnome-shell           Recommends gdm (>= 3.5.90)
hmm.
Hi @Mitch!
huh
gdm isn't actually installed..
So what was that?
ohhh.. I guess it could be gnome-screensaver misbehaving.

I used to have a different issue with the GDM lockscreen - it constantly lost keyboard focus.
My password would get typed into the window beneath the lockscreen.

That's.. bad.

Uh-huh.
LightDM hasn't done that to me, though it doesn't play nice with Synergy when the cursor is on the other screen.

Hello

Whoah... why is there only 3 GB left on /home...
Hrm... why is my Win7 VM taking up 14.9 GB...
Time to move the VMs to my other hard disk.

@NathanOsman Think you could answer a question about dbus for me?
I'm trying to listen for a signal in python.

I can try.
I recently tried to do something in Python with D-Bus. Let me see if I can find what I wrote.

The api says add_signal_reciever() take an argument signal_name:, the thing is I'm not sure what the signal name is. I know the interface and path it will come from though..

One thing that will prove to be very helpful when working with D-Bus is a tool named d-feet.
It lets you browse the current interfaces on both the system and session bus.

cool, I'll check it out.
I was using dbus-monitor to get the information I do have, but it doesn't have a signal name.. Unless the name is a piece that I just don't recognize ;p

3:37 AM
I'll see if I can find an example.
There's an example from Sublime 3.

ok.
I think I found what I'm looking for. Apparently the signal is in the member= part of the signal..

I'm assuming the signal name is "FileClosed" in that example.

Lemme see if I can get a test version running. Thanks @NathanOsman!
d-feet looks super userful :)

No problem.

3:57 AM
@NathanOsman If you're on a laptop can you do one last thing for me? In /sys/class/power_supply is there an AC or ACAD folder?

Sorry, I'm on a desktop.
:(

That's ok! I'll go ask in IRC then :)
now that is weird.
ohhhh

@Seth

huh.
what's up @Mitch?

4:06 AM
@Mitch ah cool. Thanks!
That's very helpful.
I wonder why mine just has an AC folder..

@NathanOsman 18 mbit for 15 euro but for that price you also need to take up TV and Phone in a 3 in 1 deal.
(where TV is 30 euro and Phone 10 euro a month)

Hi, everybody
I compared the speed of enlightenment & compiz & mutter.
As result, enlightenment is the fastest.
I could not understand it.
why? Who knows about it?

Oli
8:31 AM
@xiaodongjie Speed? Doing what?

speed!

Oli
I understand the word, I just don't understand what it is you've been comparing between the desktop environments... How long it takes to load? How fast menus and effects feel? Something else?

hi guys!
does anybody know how to turn on autoscrolling for chat? It turned off occasionally

Oli
@xiaodongjie Either way, it's probably because the Enlightenment desktop started in the 90s and has always put as much focus on code quality and speed as looking good. Compiz and Mutter both require heavier graphics engines to achieve their looks which take time to load. And they're far less mature projects.

yes. i think so

Anyone here updated to Firefox 37? I think I found a minor bug, want to see if anyone can reproduce
When using YouTube HTML5 player, a black box occasionally appears on top of the player timeline, covering parts of it such as the pause button

Oli
@ace I think it's probably flickering rather than a black box being rendered over the top, but yes, I see the same here in FF37.0
It seems (complete guess) to be related to the buffer progress. The length of the box over the progress bar expands a lot faster than the progress and doesn't flicker at all near the end (when it's completely loaded).
I don't get any flickering from my Watch Later queue.

ace
@Oli I wonder if I should file a bug report, and if yes, where

Thanks

Wow. You guys are fast at deleting posts

Oli
@Danatela Why? (I'm open to suggestions - but I can see "Ubuntu" several times which usually makes something on-topic)

@Oli with all my respect, but did you read it carefully?

Oli
@Danatela Not at all

It's about POST keyboard check
and speaking POST I mean Power-On Self Test

Oli
@Danatela Something in the very corner of my mind feels like there's been a legitimate issue with the Linux kernel not leaving keyboards in a safe state at shutdown.
But that might have all been a dream.
Here is something similar: superuser.com/questions/727950/…
Which links back to one of ours (where I probably read it) askubuntu.com/questions/410596/…

9:40 AM
@Oli may be. But it's not the issue. I usually try to exclude simpliest things first. For example, I will not dig into pulseaudio settings if my speakers are not plugged to the sound card's out.

Oli
10:12 AM
@Danatela Having-re-read it (some could argue I'm only reading it for the first time), yeah, that looks like a very silly question. I thought a keyboard was plugged in but now see the significance of Synergy.
