@Fabby Mr.Backup to the rescue, please!
My laptop's graphics card has now entirely died.

@Rinzwind I doubt it too. It has been tackled on MSE and forced to tap out more than once.

Everything looks like through a purple flickering filter. >:P :-(

sure you're not just Johnny Depp?

No, unfortunately not.

o/ @Luis

4:05 PM
In that case, I would have 10 identical and working laptops and just switch over to the next in the row...

@Tim IF it happens awesome (area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/86670/ask-ubuntu-in-spanish) but I have tried something like this with several groups over some 4+ years. No luck. The spanish community does want it, but there is no movement afterwards to make it happen.
@hbdgaf hi buddy sup sup!

Not a lot. Wasn't trying to grief ping you earlier, but I thought you'ld have more direct experience with the "Spanish version of..." thing.

Tim
@LuisAlvarado Well I'll see what happens. I am nowhere near suited to participate, but I've seen a few spanish posts here and thought it could give it a go.

@Tim ok joined and shared over G+, FB and LK.

Tim
:) Thanks. I would like to see it happen - we are so woefully unequipped to deal with non english posts, never mind answer them here.

4:18 PM
@LuisAlvarado \O

Am making some questions, but some of the things I have seen over the years were this:

+ Problems making correct Spanish questions / answers. For example several countries instead of drivers use controladores, but others, in my case we actually say and use drivers. Is the IT slang for controladores, but it's also the English word for it. So an IT guy working on this my said "Tienes los drivers?", "Do you have the drivers?"

+ Clash between the Spanish used in different Spanish countries. Most people think the Spanish in Argentina, Chile or Venezuela is the same in Mexico, Costa Rica or Per
@Rinzwind hi friend, how are you.

I am fine! getting into the last parts of Bloodborne <3

@LuisAlvarado Good idea on finding language differences where simply translating the question doesn't work.

@hbdgaf It is possible to accomplish this but, between having small difference in English like Flavor vs Flavour or Color versus Colour, when applied to tech stuff like "Differences between Ubuntu Flavors", this can't be which some Spanish sites literally use "Sabores de Ubuntu", it has to be "Versions of Ubuntu" even though Each Ubuntu derivative has it's own versioning history and such.

I don't think the site will make it, but it was just an idea.

4:25 PM
So let's wait and see what happens. There is a huge Spanish population and this would really grow the Ubuntu market, which reminds me, if anybody knows how I could get Ubuntu merchandise so every time I go to a talk about Ubuntu I can hand out stuff and show a big banner of Ubuntu. I was doing this in Venezuela but moved to Costa Rica and had already several events where I talked about Ubuntu, but my AskUbuntu shirt is... "A bit worned out"

@LuisAlvarado In general I would advice to contact the LOCO

o/

Loco, teams at least in Venezuela and here are a bit dead

I noticed CR has 1 person? :P

sound horrible, but the movement that we tried to make in Venezuela in the beginning and here well, did not really happen as expected.

4:29 PM
@LuisAlvarado Add that as a discussion point on the proposal that you linked? Maybe as a note about the 'potential problems'

if you order stuff from Ubuntu is gonna get expensive

Wanted, how do you say when you want a company to back you up to represent them in some way?
sponsor?

Sponsor yes. Or support but that tends to be non-financial.

a ok did not know. Well that's that then lol

Here...
@ByteCommander Ouch!

4:32 PM
Whoa, did you guys feel that? I think Fabby was here!

:P

yeah the earth shook on its axis

I almost felt from the bed

So @Fabby, I thought you were posting telepathically this week?

4:33 PM
@Seth how can this be: askubuntu.com/a/613205/15811 2 people deleted it? >:)

@Rinzwind If an answer has a score of -1 or lower 20k users can vote to delete it. It takes 3 votes to delete one.

Well the important part is, trying to teach people in this countries About Linux through Ubuntu. Already did 15 universities and a whole bunch of schools and small events in both places. Gotta keep on doing this with or without support since man, people NEED to know.

yes but it claims 2 people deleted it >:-D

@Rinzwind right, because Eliah voted before I did.

@LuisAlvarado pity they ended the free Ubuntu CD/DVD :-P

4:35 PM
You could delete this, for e.g.: askubuntu.com/questions/16371/…

@Seth then why aint I on that list? hmmm? hmmm?

@Seth :-)

@Rinzwind Did you vote to delete it?

oh yes sir

@ByteCommander So, what can I do (telepathically) about your fried graphics card???

4:36 PM

@Bytecommander: Can you disable it in the BIOS???

I do not like it when my answers are surrounded with garbage ;-)

I don't know about the other one, it doesn't show a vote by you..

@Seth What does the answerer see if their answer is deleted?

hmm weird ah well :D

4:38 PM
@Fabby Lets find out..

@Fabby depends on their rep ;-)

@Seth I was going to propose you delete one of my answers...
;-)

lol
@Seth I dare you to delete them ALL

@Rinzwind Ah... Sub 10K or not?

4:40 PM
I am so reporting for abuse of the system

it says deleted by owner o_O

Now I need to upvote that _o-

@Seth can you delete this one?

The help center links to askubuntu.com/help/deleted-answers
@Fabby ok

same same,
except "deleted by seth"
mmmh... I can still undelete it...
Let's try that...

4:43 PM
@Fabby Hi.

"a moderator has deleted this post and it cannot be undeleted"
Let's try editing before undelete...
@ByteCommander Oh, yes...

Sorry, I was just away and tried to copy my home folders...

Sorry...
How can I be of assistance?

Well, maybe a full backup guide?

@ByteCommander rsync the entire /home/, /root/, /etc/ directories over to an alternate system, or make local copies in a folder that you can then tar.gz for transport over other mediums to another system?
(that's one option)
alternatively just go clonezilla on the entire drive and make an image/backup
but meh

4:46 PM
@ByteCommander Seems like Thomas has had a good night's sleep...
He's making sense... ;-)

@ThomasW. Will that conserve the permissions etc?

Otherwise, Take the HDD out of the broken laptop

Can't

put it in an enclosure and
ah...
What do you have???

Special plugs...

4:47 PM
We'll McGyver something up...

Well, I have a big external HDD via USB.

@ByteCommander from the manpage:
        -p, --perms                 preserve permissions
        -E, --executability         preserve executability

Good...

But it should not get formatted.

OK

4:48 PM
There is other content on it too.

Understood...

@ByteCommander the problem is that you may lose group ownership rights because the data on users won't always match up between systems

4 options:
cp, rsync, dd, tar

Well, no idea...

@Fabby does dd preserve permissions?

user136984
4:49 PM
@Fabby: By the way, thank you for letting me know about the dark side of prelink, it's been purged now! ;D :P

ooo yeah forgot about tar, it can preserve perms

dd preserves the entire partition as is
cp too

I would also consider a reinstall with Vivid if I can push my settings and data over.

@Fabby cp does if you pass it a preserve command but meh

It depends what @ByteCommander is comfortable with...

4:50 PM
indeed

He has to do the restore...

But first having an entire backup is good, because if the porting fails, I can still try returning my old system.

I should scan backwards to see what the discussion started with

@ByteCommander CloneZilla...

@ByteCommander CloneZilla that if you want an easily restoreable image

4:51 PM
That gives you full roll-back capabilities...
including MBR

i use that here at home and at work to take images/backups of the desktops

I have an Acronis True Image live CD. should be the same...

Nah...

@ByteCommander it's not... not really.

CloneZilla
it's a bit more difficult to get one file from a CloneZilla image,
but not impossible...

4:52 PM
Can CZ "clone" to a file on my USB HDD and restore it from there to a part of the internal HDD of my desktop?

yes
you could clone partition to image

So the old system on my desktop will also be safe.

And then do MBR separate

MBR should not be the problem.

You could even mount the CloneZilla image on your desktop...

4:53 PM
I just need to make sure that the other data on my USB drive and my target HDD stay untouched.

(that's the "slightly more difficult way" or restoring one file)

@Fabby He could dd his entire file system to one file, and then mount that, in theory. It's a little more tricky to do it, but for cyber forensics I sometimes have to mount a .dd image.

CloneZilla!

but CloneZilla is the more useful way

@ThomasW. LET IT BE KNOWN TO ALL:

4:54 PM
Okay, then CLonezilla. If that is The Right Way TM

I agree 100% with @ThomasW.

runs away

:D

@ByteCommander Any more confidence :)

4:55 PM
Yes!
Just one warning:
disk TO IMAGE is your friend

oh noes...

Uses anyone of you "rsnapshot"?

stupid question but how broken is your computer, @ByteCommander

NOT DISK TO DISK!!!
video card is broken

@Fabby Sure.

4:56 PM
@Fabby ahhhh okay
that's an easy thing then :P

Great backup tool

:)

except he'll need a screen / graphics card to still see the clonezilla interface, no?

@A.B. There are tons of back-up programs out there...
most are based on rsync...

@Fabby I would rather call it "to the mainboard glued and soldered f###ing nVidia chip" than video card, but okay...

4:57 PM
@ByteCommander Does console still work?

GUI with many flickering and unsharp pixels, but TTY stays black.

@ByteCommander thats called an integrated video card :p

Good!

@Fabby I also wanted to say something. :P ;)

@A.B. You just did :)
(yes i'm in an evil sassy mood right now - i need coffee to fix it)

4:58 PM
I also have to say that plain-text mode produces letter salad!

@ByteCommander ????

So like plain TTY1 or the non-GUI Ubuntu installer or so is very unreadable.

as long as it's readable: use CloneZilla Boot CD, expert mode, text only...

@ByteCommander unreadable how?

You'll see...

4:59 PM
I always see 2 characters correct, then 2 characters randomly then 2 characters correct etc.
Looks like Polnish to sum it up, no matter what language it was before.

Good enough
Good luck!

So I guess I first have to download a CloneZilla CD now.

(at least you've had time to save up for a new laptop)

Is this a good answer? I need recognition. =)

stupid question: how can i completely purge all postgresql software versions on my system, then reinstall the latest available from the repos?
the precise -> trusty upgrade kinda borked things

5:02 PM
@Fabby This one clonezilla.org/downloads/download.php?branch=stable with Architecture to i586 and iso format?

@ThomasW. apt-get purge postgres*
apt-get install postgresql-X.y
Whatever is most current in the repo you have

perhaps i should just install posgresql - the metapackage that points to latest :P

@ThomasW. I would definitely CloneZilla my system before trying that...

@Fabby mmm, well, the db is fried already so meh
@Fabby FYI: --dry-run is an amazing thing with apt-get xD :p

@ByteCommander yes

5:06 PM
@Fabby Or should I get this Ubuntu-based version for i386? clonezilla.org/downloads/download.php?branch=alternative

@ByteCommander Irrelevant if you're running text only mode

@ByteCommander How old is your laptop?

i586 says it only supports 1 core and seems to be different from mine.

PAE!!!

Label says designed for XP but Vista capable.

5:07 PM
I386 works also on no-PAE systems...
if you have PAE: irrelevant...

So the alternative version based on Ubuntu for i386?

I've only ever needed 32-bit once on a 10YO Thinkpad,

It's an Intel Centrino Duo 2x2GHz. 32bit

so if your laptop has PAE extensions: whatever
Any is fine...
Centrino supports PAE...

I don't even know what PAE is... :-/

5:10 PM
@ByteCommander tsk
5
A: Can Ubuntu 32-bit access 8GB RAM?

Rinzwind Does Ubuntu do this out of the box? Ubuntu will automatically turn on Physical Address Extension (PAE) if it is available; otherwise it will not even install. Anyway, i386 and Ubuntu sounds familiar. I take the alternative stable version.

@ByteCommander Take the 32-bit alternative, just to be sure

You can no longer install Ubuntu without PAE anyways on a 32-bit system

i386 = 32bit, no?

yup
@Rinzwind He's talking about CloneZilla alternate download...

5:12 PM
@Fabby where? >:)

Last time I looked, it didn't need PAE

and eeeeeeew clonezilla :=)

I now got this one.

argh could you not link to direct downloads >:-D

searching for a CD-R...
@Rinzwind No! >:)

5:14 PM
@ByteCommander Good!
@Rinzwind NoScript!

@ByteCommander usb sticks for the win :=)

There should pop up a "Do you want to save this file?" dialog anyway...
@Rinzwind Nah, better do it The Old School Way TM...
Less possible errors.

Save the environment! Use USB sticks!

:P Who cares about the environment? I need a working Ubuntu!

No earth = no Ubuntu

5:17 PM
@Rinzwind :D

Ubuntu is above earth.
OH NO! >:P
That f###ing Win7 machine has no burner!
And I have no empty stick...
So once again I have to wake up an old XP dragon to get this CloneZilla to plastic.
Okay, CZ is ready to fire it up @Fabby.

5:35 PM
@ByteCommander Good!

I already did the step to mount my USB HDD.

Do you need step-by-step help?
You need a special burning program to burn CloneZilla...
Shall we decamp?

Get a room? if you want to.

With a packet generator can you send packets to a specific port on another machine?

Does anyone here know the proper/preferred way to put the contents of a variable into a string in Python? You can do the "string...",variable,"string..." method, the "string..."+variable+"string..." method, the "string... %s string..." % variable method, the "string... {0} string...".format(variable) method...

@Toroidal done
@RPiAwesomeness I like the + best, but then I like operator overload...
So whatever you're most comfortable with...
and whatever is most readable!
(readability of code is most important if you work in teams)

Of course. That (or the %s) method is what I normally use, but I was curious if there's a certain standard as to what it should be.

If you have a pice of code that needs:
Var = "Extremely extremely extremely extremely extremely extremely "+
      "long string"
the + makes it more readable...

It does indeed.

user136984
@Fabby Thanks! :)

6:38 PM
You too! ;-)
@RPiAwesomeness So that's why I always use +
consistency and readability...
But you'll find everyone (and his/her/its dog) has his/her/its POV on this...

Yeah, that's usually what I do too. I'll use the , method when it's printing a string, simply because it requires typing two less characters (space on each side). However, I normally use +. I think you're technically supposed to use the % method (safer or something)

user136984
